Tracking Down BMW E36 Fuel Leaks - Quick and Easy Diagnostic

- This is the process I use to diagnose a fuel leak. If you smell fuel then you’ll want to get on top of this quickly. In my case, it appears that I’ll have to replace the fuel sending unit and the components related to it.

Got some kind of a fuel leak after filling it up fully. Thanks for the video!
If you need any help you can reach out to me on IG so I can see photos of what’s going on
Personally it came from that hose at 4:17. Not sure if the hose was getting a bit loose or just the hose was not sealing properly. It was dripping 1 drop per second. Changed the hose, then it was leaking way more. I had to reaaaaallly tighten these 2 clamps very very hard to make the leak stop. Now there is no leak
Wondering if tightening the clamp a little bit with the old hose would have just fixed it lol
All the parts wear over time so it’s a “while I’m in here” fix sometimes. Hopefully you used the fuel hose clamps. They do a better job without damaging the hoses
@@tractioncontroldelete i used the same clamps that were on the hose before the leak. Maybe it got a bit loose, or maybe the hose wasn't sealing properly anymore
@@Keless the hose probably had micro-tears. They’re not easy to see but when the lines are under pressure it’s enough to cause a leak
The pipe with the big diameter on the tank is not having any pipe. Is it a breather or it supposed to be connected?
Hey man I’ve got the same e36 and mine has a strong fuel smell so I’m gonna have a look but the smell is mainly coming from the engine
If the smell is around the engine then I would start at the fuel filter which is under the car near the driver door. Then start moving forward to the engine. Pay attention to the lines under the car as you move forward. Once in the engine keep an eye on the fuel hoses. If no leak found yet then look for leaking around the injectors. My guess, because the smell is from the engine, is that your O-rings around the injectors are worn. Very common. Circle back to me if you need more info…
@@tractioncontroldelete there’s a line that seems abit wet you can see it coming from the fuel filter line it’s at the start of the engine bay
@@tractioncontroldeleteand I’m guessing you can only smell the fuel when it’s been running not to long ago
@@ZallZdubs that’s most likely the culprit. Although it’s only a little wet now, you have to keep in mind that the flow will increase a whole lot once the lines are under pressure from fuel. My email address and IG are on my page - send me a photo and I can take a look
@@ZallZdubs for me, it’s when the tank is full because it goes above the sending unit. I fixed it yesterday and will post that video later on tonight
mine only smells when starting it up, same car also
That sounds like the issue is a fuel line/hose because when it’s under pressure it can cause some fumes/fuel to leak out enough to smell it
@@tractioncontroldelete gotcha champ, will take a look
@@johndekijk keep me posted!
@@tractioncontroldelete well I have checked fuel lines, injector bearings etc but to no vail. however my fuel filter protective casing has broken after a significant hit on the underbody due to a bump. i'll try changing that soon and see if it fixes it.
@@johndekijk The fuel filter is right by the driver side door so that would make sense that you can smell it
