when i had a Wii and first saw his vids they amazed me, just watched them again and they are still awesome. I just really wish he would continue with his projects on the Wii and make more videos.
jc, that was great. Thanks for sharing it with us. I'm always fascinated with technology, the magnitude of which I will probably never comprehend in my lifetime. Thanks for the fun!Almost 2 million views on this now and it just surfaced on my youtube.
Somehow I missed this video when I first checked out your channel. This is awesome. Another brilliant application of available technology. Your ingenuity really amazes me!
I am so glad I randomly found your video on TED! I may not be able to do something like this yet, but this is certainly inspiring! I hope you keep finding out more cool options for uses of the IR tracking and such. In TED, the site showed you with a room and glasses that allowed the room to move in response to your movements. That looked so perfectly 3D, without the glasses, that it was just amazing! Truly, the best 3D I've seen so far.
Dude, you're going places! I hope you get hired by one of these companies, get paid tons of money, and help get us into the next gaming age (among other apps). God bless your talents and intelligence!
You, sir, are a genius. I mean, seriously. A genius. There's not much more I can use to describe what you do to make something with potential, to something just downright amazing. Outstanding job!
Actually, resa69, we do. Infrared is also known as "heat". So as long as you have body heat, you "emit infrared light". Hence why he said "not much". For this type of tracking you need a higher level of IR at a pinpoint location to distinguish things easier.
Thanks for doing this Johnny. People should be aware, that while some stuff many not be actually useful at first, if you think about stuff, you can often use them on other projects that may not seem apparent at first. This sort of thinking is key to new products.
It's really funny (and kind of suprising) at how long your vids have been out and Nintendo has not got nearly as creative throughout the entire life of the Wii.
Ooh, so much potentional. You just made the Wiimote 100x cooler than it was. And it was already one of the coolest controllers ever. Nintendo might want to pay attention to this for future ideas ;)
The remote is the component that detects motion - the sensor is just a source of IR light. In effect in this video the IR LED array is the 'sensor bar' and we are reflecting the IR light back to the Wii remote.
this guy is a frikkin' nerd! in the most positive way^^ man, combined with his other ideas (i.e. head tracking) the wii could take gameplay to another dimension.
Wow this is pretty awesome, I have a wii and I agree, you should completely show nintendo this video. This is really cool, and just off the top of my head, you could make a really amazing piano/drum kit type game-simulator from something like this.
All that you have to do is advance this and make it more efficient and you could program it do all sorts of amazing things for interacting with a device. Like shooting a gun in a game or editing a photo in the air in front of you... this is a very cool thing
DUDE THIS IS AWESOME! whenever i get enough led's (from multiple remotes) and a way to curcuit them all up, and a nintendo wii, i will definatly do this for my dell inspiron mini, i know that sounds hard but right now i use it on a flatscreen lcd tv with wireless mouse & keyboard & an external hdd, so it's like a computer
I can honestly see this kind of thing in the future, Although I'm sure this guy wasn't the FIRST to discover it, he's done well to mess with it and come up with this. Well done dood. I only wish I could be bothered to try this. :D
It´s very cool that you are so curious about the Wii and found that funny fact out. It´s really very amazing and looks also pretty weird when you can see all your fingers just as little dots by the wii remote. Video get 5*´s
Very interesting, even if some of the materials required were a bit obscure. Very well narrated, and very well explained. I feel I understand how the Wiimote works much better now.
Wow. You are ingenious (sp?) dude. I've watched a couple of your videos already and I think you are the man. Start emailing the links from these videos to nintendo and other game makers. They'll snatch you up and pay you fat!
The wii is more interactive than I thought! I'd say that the wii is the best virtual console of the current three. He is a genius! employ him!!! Nintendo will do even better with this guy!
Watch the video again as it explains it. The sensor bar in the wii is very simple, all it is is an array of LEDs. The IR camera in the Wiimote can see the LEDs (the LED light isn't visible to the human eye) and based on how the LEDs 'look' to the Wiimote, the wii can calculate where the remote is pointing. With this the light being reflected by the fingers is a substitute for the sensor bar. Remember, the Sensor bar doesnt actually sense anything.... thats the wiimotes job.
at first i could only gawk dumbfounded and slackjawed at johnny's brilliance. now my soul screams the sort of desperate cry of an incompetent lower being encountering one's god. this man, ladies and gentlemen, is a true ubergeek. i bow to his glorious brilliance and pray that he will continue to show us the way, cheaply and with seemingly impossible elegance and ease. mother. fucking. win. someone better give this guy some fucking money.
Whoa... You've just recreated an EFFECTIVE power glove! Nintendo needs to hire you. You can do these things on your own without much supplies. They'd love to have you on the team, I'm sure! :D
you could make games where you swat objects moving around on the screen, draw and paint, interact with virtual pets, etc. Buttons could be replaced with new ui elements, like moving your hand to the side of the screen for menus, or tapping your fingers together. It also developers to create a whole new paradigm for control and interaction.
por favor ! que alguna compañia contrate a este tio!!! That's incredible!! thid could be a very interesting evolution in the gaming world. please , contract this guy !!!
u basicaly made kinect
only better
Lee was a core member of Microsoft's Kinect development team in 2010,
so, yes, he made kinect.
This is actually more like leap motion. www.leapmotion.com/
No, Leap motion is more like this. this was posted 10 years ago..
@@retrovizir6985 wow
This guy is a genius.
2007 and found this? cool
You are a god damn genius
This is a seriously brilliant idea! So easy to do, and so extremely useful with the right software.
Thank God for curious individuals like you !!
Theoretically, instead of reflecting IR light off your hand, could you make a glove with fingertips that had IR leds?
+greatniss totally. You can strap 5 remotes to your hand with duct tape.
when i had a Wii and first saw his vids they amazed me, just watched them again and they are still awesome. I just really wish he would continue with his projects on the Wii and make more videos.
Nice... HOMEMADE LEAP MOTION HERE I GO!!
My Wiimote is set on fire, but it works!
Please tell me your kidding...
also just get cardboard and a phone and tell the phone was made by you.
100% werkz no faek and no liez
mkay

Somehow I missed this video when I first checked out your channel. This is awesome. Another brilliant application of available technology. Your ingenuity really amazes me!
You are so smart. It's not even that complex, but just by coming up with these awesome ideas really makes me think about the future.
I am so glad I randomly found your video on TED! I may not be able to do something like this yet, but this is certainly inspiring! I hope you keep finding out more cool options for uses of the IR tracking and such.

Such a simple mind. It's so cute when people like you try to talk *tickle*!
I continue to look forward to the awesomeness you are destined to unleash. Keep it up.
Dude, you're going places! I hope you get hired by one of these companies, get paid tons of money, and help get us into the next gaming age (among other apps).
God bless your talents and intelligence!
I am now convinced that you are the reason why VR is as good as it is today
30 years ahead of its time. Godspeed
This is really really impressive, congratulations. I'm going to build one immediately.
did you ever end up doing it?
You, sir, are a genius. I mean, seriously. A genius. There's not much more I can use to describe what you do to make something with potential, to something just downright amazing.
Outstanding job!
you, my friend, are a freaking genious.
5 stars for you and all the possible respect.
what make you think it's not the future that you are watching? This guy is just awsome
how is youtube NOW recommending this to me?! This is so cool!! I never NEVER knew this was a thing!
You've won my coveted post of the day award. I hope that makes you feel good inside.
He is a very clever guy, he uses alot of his learnt skills and puts it into these 'weird' inventions he makes, hes just very clever
I love your ideas! But I can not, CAN NOT, believe that you're giving these ideas out for free! This is worth millions of dollars!
That's a cool new application for the candle idea.
can't wait to see where all this goes
Actually, resa69, we do. Infrared is also known as "heat". So as long as you have body heat, you "emit infrared light". Hence why he said "not much". For this type of tracking you need a higher level of IR at a pinpoint location to distinguish things easier.
There MIGHT not be a point for it now, the point is that this project has potential and is a very clever idea by this guy.
This is a great example of some cheap motion capture solutions. My buddies been doing this to help with his 3d project for college. Brilliant.
Thanks for doing this Johnny. People should be aware, that while some stuff many not be actually useful at first, if you think about stuff, you can often use them on other projects that may not seem apparent at first. This sort of thinking is key to new products.
sweet video man im from Australia. i like the way you kept it simple and explained everything. we aren't all tech heroes so thanks!
This is exactly what Nintendo did with the Labo Toycons. Thats pretty amazing
Dude. You can get paid cold hard cash for this. You can make this become one step closer to VR consoles being released. YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!
It's really funny (and kind of suprising) at how long your vids have been out and Nintendo has not got nearly as creative throughout the entire life of the Wii.
This is interesting not because it's a new concept, but because he did it with a Wiimote and just a couple other inexpensive things.
Good job Johnny. I appreciate your work.
He said in the end of the video that it's pointless. It's just really cool to try.
Ooh, so much potentional. You just made the Wiimote 100x cooler than it was. And it was already one of the coolest controllers ever.
Nintendo might want to pay attention to this for future ideas ;)
you have created a new generation of science...
amazing!
The remote is the component that detects motion - the sensor is just a source of IR light.

this guy is a frikkin' nerd! in the most positive way^^
man, combined with his other ideas (i.e. head tracking) the wii could take gameplay to another dimension.
Thanks Johnny! First saw your presentation at TED. Bloody brilliant.
Man you can be a serious rich guy, these ideas are awsome and should be get in development.
Wow this is pretty awesome, I have a wii and I agree, you should completely show nintendo this video. This is really cool, and just off the top of my head, you could make a really amazing piano/drum kit type game-simulator from something like this.

It's awesome that it maximizes functionality
You rock. Someone give this guy a few million and a company.
You're a genius. Plain and simple.
This is unbelievably amazing.

This guy comes up with so much cool stuff. he should work for nintendo.
GENIUS! this generation isnt so doomed with you at the helm :D.
Really well done mate, that's absoloutely genius, simple but genius.
Nintendo should definitely employ you.
you are a modern genius my friend..
This dude is a freaking genius.
Wow. You are ingenious (sp?) dude. I've watched a couple of your videos already and I think you are the man. Start emailing the links from these videos to nintendo and other game makers. They'll snatch you up and pay you fat!
It does that's why he's got noise on the TV before he puts on the reflective tape, also there will be shadows and so on. Many factors to keep in mind.
Holy crap! That is really cool! Thanks for explaining how it's done!
okay what ever video game corporation hires this guy first will make so much money
The wii is more interactive than I thought! I'd say that the wii is the best virtual console of the current three. He is a genius! employ him!!! Nintendo will do even better with this guy!
Johnny your brilliant.
5 stars.
I salute your innovation!
wow truly genius. I have a glimpse of the future because of this vid.
this guy is many years after us...
Watch the video again as it explains it. The sensor bar in the wii is very simple, all it is is an array of LEDs. Remember, the Sensor bar doesnt actually sense anything.... thats the wiimotes job.
Dude you are awesome! And I laughed when you put a square of reflective tape on your fingers.
I thought exactly the same thing! An extra camera that hooks to the wii(plus the infrared LED array), and a power glove type of device
Sounds like just the guy nintendo needs. Cheap affordable but creative and unique possibilities
So thats HOW MS Found out how to do the Body Motion Tracking...
Thanks to this guy..
He should get credit for that..
What can I say.... you are genius.
It was a demo application that shows how you can get the equivalent of a multitouch screen using an the IR camera in the remote and reflective tape.
This is so amazing. Awesome man.
That's amazing! You could make some special black and white gloves to use with it.
the wii sure has alot of technology in it.
at first i could only gawk dumbfounded and slackjawed at johnny's brilliance. now my soul screams the sort of desperate cry of an incompetent lower being encountering one's god. this man, ladies and gentlemen, is a true ubergeek. i bow to his glorious brilliance and pray that he will continue to show us the way, cheaply and with seemingly impossible elegance and ease. mother. fucking. win.
someone better give this guy some fucking money.
its so simple yet so brilliant
You do slot of cool stuff with the Wii
respect!
you are a real new hommade artificer! wow.
Whoa...
You've just recreated an EFFECTIVE power glove!
Nintendo needs to hire you.
You can do these things on your own without much supplies.
They'd love to have you on the team, I'm sure! :D
That was pretty good man, keep it up
this dude's a genius! you should be developing or sometting, you could make a lot of money with this stuff
you could make games where you swat objects moving around on the screen, draw and paint, interact with virtual pets, etc. Buttons could be replaced with new ui elements, like moving your hand to the side of the screen for menus, or tapping your fingers together. It also developers to create a whole new paradigm for control and interaction.

please , contract this guy !!!
Thats a pretty good observation and to think of it that way.
you, sir, have moved up on my list of "Cool"
Your videos are amazing. I would trade all those crappy waggle fest games on the wii for those nice demos.
It works sooo well!! I was playing some of my Wii games with it!! Thanks
YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME.
O.O
I love this guy.
Well done, that was really amusing
A great simple experiment for you to try at home. Hope you can program in C++. Either way darn cool experiment.
this is pretty awesome and nerdy
That's really cool
impressive demo, man
That was great! You made it easy to understand.. even for a technologically-challenged person like me lol
this is actually kinda amazing....
cheers man!! It means Minority Report monitor! Really cool!!
Man, you are the genius !
