I had the old gen 450x when my bud got this new gen 450x I rode it a little, and it legit felt light as a 250f even thought they are exactly same weight. Honda did a great job with the mass centralization.

Old man bought the 650r in 2000 when it came out, then a brand new 450x in 05 when it came out. I don’t want to get rid of my 250 2t but that’s a really nice bike might need to switch

    I rode a 2009 CRF450X and that was a great bike.
    I now own the dual-purpose version of this bike, a 2021 CRF450RL.
The bike has great power, great suspension, and great stability.
The trade-off for the stability is a heavy and not-too-agile feeling on tight trails, but that was expected.
If you have the room to use the throttle, the bike feels excellent and the rest of the bike is up to the task.

When you do the necessary mods to a 450 RL, like replace the muffler, the weight difference becomes negligible between the X and RL. If you add street legal gear to the X, the difference becomes more negligible. The RL is the bike for me. Buyers choice.

Remember that this bike is 30 pounds heavier than a comparable KTM 450 XCFW. The extra weight is very noticeable on tight single track, but bombing across the desert it adds stability. Consider where you will be riding this bike before you purchase. The tall first gear and flame out issue are a deal killer in the woods, but probably won’t be much of an issue in open terrain. Honda build quality is always appreciated.

I really liked mine but it had way too much power for trail riding. I bought this instead of the L for the reduced weight and off-road biased personality. It loves fire roads and open terrain but not the single track. The absence of a radiator fan and a harder clutch pull discouraged me from exploring in snotty stuff. The engine durability is through the roof though. Some folks are at 30K miles and only did 1 valve adjustment. This is a fantastic desert machine for an experienced rider.

I think the 450x is the ONLY high-performance dirt bike that can get a California green sticker - which is worthy of attention. The only other high-performance bikes that can be ridden on public California roads are the dual-sport 450RL, EXC-F, and Beta RRS. I'm hoping to see more high-performance choices later, like a CRF250X or a green version of the KTM XC-F/XCF-W. A green-sticker, injected TBI 2-stroke will be awesome if possible. I don't expect electric off-road bikes to have similar power and weight, and range for at least 5-10 years.

Are there trail riders anymore ? People ether ride motocross , desert, or ride single track.
It would be cool if the channel would start using these categories. It seems like this is not a good single track bike , so when you say it’s a good “trail” bike…I wonder what you are actually talking about ?
    Jeep roads?
If your content creators are looking for new angles , this is the untapped topic you are looking for.
The only bikes that get respectably reviewed for single track are the XCW models from KTM. Mostly so the 2T.
Put some thumpers in the mix. Especially those from the Japanese brands. You’ll be the only ones doing it.

I would call myself a trail rider. The only thing i dont ride is mx. And dude my 06 250x is killer! It's actually great on single track ( like tight PNW single track ) and eats up fire and jeep roads and OHV trails and like wider single track ( like in AZ & CO ) I'm not the best rider but I can keep up with most guys on new FI bikes and im in at half the cost.
But I totally agree. They should do more japs and thumpers. I'm not retired yet so the new blingy stuff is out of reach for most of us.

Especially when they review these bikes at a closed course competition track. Not entirely sure the thought process behind taking the 450x and reviewing at the place most would not choose to ride it.
Take it to some mountain single track , review it from flowy to technical and tell us where the line is drawn. That’s what we are going to do with it if we bought one.

In Dirtbike Magazines defense, I know Honda classifies the 450x as a “trail” bike on their website. However, Honda also has the 125f and 250f’s labeled as trail bikes. Those of which are completely different machines with completely different purposes than the 450x. The term “trail bike” has a many interpretations that makes its use in dirtbike vocabulary vague and dissatisfying.

@@philg666v I don't think so . A modern bike should be capable to detect that you are riding technical stuff , the ground speed is low and the handle bars are wiggling left and right . The FI should be capable to enrich the fuel air mix according to theses parameters without loosing much overall emission efficienty. Jetting according to ground speed would probably more fuel efficient globaly.

I do find that for example, on my personal 06 250x after I tune it properly will riiiiiiiip and will never flame out. Literally never. It keeps up with the new FIs and even the newer FI smokers. And im a below average rider on dirt. But it's carbed. I would hate to deal with flame outs on a new OVERPRICED FI dirtbike. Seems like they shouldn't have that problem 😕
