So many talking points in this Fleetwood Mac performance, not just vocally! Wow. The Chain remains one of the most powerful performances because of the relationships involved. - oh boy!

Often times two singers will sing with each other in a song. In this case, they're singing AT each other.
I get the feeling that it's a good thing they were that far apart on stage. It like if they were closer they may have come to blows.
I've heard several live versions of this song, but this one is the most visceral. It's more like a duel than a song.
You notice in the first chorus no matter how long Buckingham holds his note Nicks holds hers longer to drown him out. So in the second chorus after the if you don't love me now you will never love me again part, Buckinghams waits a second and instead of going to the we must never break the chain line he repeats the first part of the chorus. As a result not only does Nicks come in too early on her part but she starts singing the wrong line (well actually the right line) and has to stop herself. That was Buckingham's way of fighting back against Nicks basically trying to push him off the stage with her backup vocals of his song. This is a performance that doesn't need analysis by a vocal teacher. It is a performance that needs analysis by a psychologist.
I’ve listened to this performance many times, I still can’t catch the part you’re referring to in the second chorus
Thanks for your analysis. This is another great song from the "Rumours" album. "The Chain" was written during the turmoil in all of their lives like you mentioned. Lindsay Buckingham & Stevie Nicks were ending their years long relationship, John & Christine McVie's marriage broke down, as did that of Mick Fleetwood & his wife Jenny Boyd. Their album "Rumours" (1977) is one of the best-selling albums in history. All the songs on it are great such as "Dreams", "Go Your Own Way", "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun". "Second Hand News", "Gold Dust Woman" etc. Sadly Christine McVie passed away recently.
The fact that Lindsey and Stevie have known each other personally and musically since they were 16 and 17 respectively, and they performed, wrote and produced music together for years in 2 different bands prior to joining FWM allows them to finish each other's sentences. Whether angry or happy with one another, they are absolutely in synch musically and performance wise. They feed off each other. The investment, emotion, love, pain, drama is real. They can play it up, but sometimes it takes a life of its own.
If you've not reacted to the 1997 live performances of Silver Springs or the accoustic Landslide just Lindsey and Stevie, you should. It transcends performance to experience.
And remember, this performance was 5 or 6 years after the song was released. Doesn't seem like anybody bothered to forgive and forget, does it? I guess time might not heal ALL wounds.
The 1997 version even still had a lot of emotion, but I think the audio was better and it wasn't as raw.
The Chain was written in 1977. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were still having professional conflicts as recently as 2018.
I think they were still doing the on and off thing in ‘82
Of course not. Have you listened to Time? It was hardly their best work.
Ah yes the daggers being shot beaten Lindsay & Stevie are epic. Kinda makes the song super authentic
Stevie and Lindsey always let their feelings toward each other come out on stage. While I love this performance (Mac is my all time favorite band) the intensity is even stronger on the version of Silver springs from the concert video The dance. The end of that song is a truly if looks could kill moment from both of them.
Yes! It’s uncomfortably beautiful!
This performance was genuine. I love the Silver Springs performance on The Dance, but I honestly believe that was more of act for the viewers. So much time had passed.Saying that,it all boiled up again in 2018
@@randypowers2503 I'm sure there is some showmanship for the crowd. But this may be one of those relationships where is always some love/hate below the surface. Stevie has a hard time holding it together years later with "say goodbye". One of those can't live with 'em/can't live without 'em type relationships.
Great reaction Jenn, as always. I bet this was 100% improvised through emotion and not planned or worked on at all. Feels totally raw and in the moment to me.
Hi❤️ It was 52 years ago I went to see Fleetwood Mac at little theatre in Philadelphia, I was 16yo. Spellbound by Stevie, tears in my eyes, something I will never forget!!
This song is credited to all five members of the band during all of the break ups and affairs and such. Lindsay was always kind of a beast on stage, but they were all pretty cocaine fueled at the time which could account fior some of the aggression. Great reaction, Jen. I love how you feel the music.
Thank you!
Good review Jennifer! You explained so much, by just your observation. 🎹❤
Thank you☺️
As we say in Italy, they didn't stab each other for lack of time. The same thing happened with the Eagles and other groups. Drugs and alcohol completed the picture, but once on stage all their stories were thrown behind them and they produced masterpiece concerts and albums. It was the love for music and for this job that kept them going. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the insights Jen, great band, great track, huge emotions, great analysis
Thank you☺️
They were amazing in concert! Seen them many times. Always a great show!
Stevie and Lindsey are probably the loves of each other's lives, but they are so toxic to each other, they are still fighting almost 50 years later.
Time for Silver Springs next
Someone said that listening to this record was like watching mom and dad break up… that was deep.
One of the GOATS, that roamed the land of the 70’s! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Have you ever heard the song "Oh well" by Fleetwood Mac. It's always been on of my favorites. I only got to see Fleetwood Mac one time back in 79 on the Tusk tour. My friend and I got lost in the venue afterwards and wound up bumping into the band heading for the limo out back. I was gob smacked, my flabber was well and truly gasted when Stevie shook my hand and asked if I enjoyed the show! She was insanely beautiful.
Love that there is no auto tune on any of it! And watching Lindsay, based on the time, one has to wonder if there was some illegal drugs involved. But the breaks in the vocals at times, the screams and all just make it so very powerful, and beautiful. ❤️🎶
No need wondering, there was a lot of cocaine involved in this performance, and not just by Lindsey.
@@ricktreatthere sure was in this performance. To Lindsey’s credit,he was the first one to clean up on the drugs. They recording Tango In The Night in 1986 at Lindsey’s studio and he made Mick and Stevie use a trailer when they were doing Coke. Wasn’t too long after that,Stevie was in Betty Ford getting herself clean
Silver Springs next please!
Takes me back to my twenties and road trips in the mountains.
Love FM! It is a shame that they have such great talent but endured such turmoil in their personal lives. Their songs are a testament of personal tribulation and are miracles of musicianship to flawlessly present the dedication to their craft. Bravo, Fleetwood Mac for writing such wonderful, emotionally charged music. Great reaction and analysis Jenn with this insanely intense song.
Lindsey is a very underrated guitarist. His finger-picking technique is amazing
Yes he is so underrated.
Fleetwood Mac was the classic example of making hatred into a profitable business. While most bands break up, or leave the road or stop making albums FM just kept making more money, and ther audiences ate it up. They may be the picture in the phrasebook of "putting the fun in disfunctional." I also have to believe that Stevie named her tambourine Lindsey.
still top 5 selling album of all time. the only song on the album were all 5 band members were credited with writer credits. it also has one the most prominent bass lines in the history of music. this song is the very essence of this band. the fact this album even got made was a miracle of itself. between the drama, the drugs, truly a miracle.
Love this, great breakdown/reaction to this classic performance
Great job Jenn, in this live version, you can see them stare a hole through each other as the song goes on.
THIS WAS IN 82 JENNIFER ( MIRAGE TOUR ) FIVE YEARS AFTER THE EPIC 77 ( RUMOURS ) ALBUM! 😊
Cool. Nice to see you looking back. There’s lots of good stuff out there. 😊 Thanks Jenn!
Primal therapy concert!
Buckingham Nicks album was just prior to FM. Great production on his part, as usual.
Love a bit of Fleetwood Mac. This and Tusk are my faves, I think.
Their emotion in this performance is almost palpable
Great analysis. Please check out Landslide 1997 live. You won't be disappointed. Fleetwood Mac ofcourse.
I love, love, love Fleetwood Mac!!! Yes, their story is powerful, crazy…I don’t know how else to describe it. And did you see that PTX just dropped a live version of Hallelujah! It’s incredible. Please react to it!
I think there's a good chance I was there that night at the LA Forum. They played I think 3 nights there but I do remember Christine's bright red dress.
Lindsey and Stevie hanging onto those ending notes like they both want to get the last word.
It's like watching your parents fighting in the kitchen
Lyndsey is such an underrated guitarist
Another great live song about Stevie and Lindsey's breakup where they show a lot of emotion is Silver Springs. Here's the link. ua-cam.com/video/eDwi-8n054s/v-deo.html
Great analysis!
Oh, Stevie and Lindsey were thoroughly coked up here. 😂
Probably Stevie, but Lindsey was never too fond of coke, his choice was pot. At least according to a few biographies.
It's from 1982, the entire city of Los Angeles was coked up then.
@@catcalvinI think Lindsey tokes it up on stage in this show. He and John are facing each other over by Mick and it's hanging out of his mouth. He draws big on it, blows the smoke toward John and he leans in to get as much as he can. Cracked me up first time I saw it.
Yeah I know, I know, it wasn't his primary drug of choice. This ain't pot & booze. Unless you add in the coke. 😂
Without coke, I cannot explain Lindseys hat.
Great reaction! Can’t wait for your reaction to Fleetwood Mac’s song Rhiannon live Midnight Special show it’s 🔥🔥😊.
That was... intense.
This is the only song in which all 5 members have writing credits. That iconic baseline in the middle from John McVie, he contributed that riff from what he'd written before. Same for all of them. You can find a beautiful Demo version of this song, too, sung by Stevie, accompanied by Lindsey. Almost nothing like this. It's mesmerizing. So the basis of this song was created well before they ever broke up, but the final version works very well with Stevie and Lindsey's relationship demise. To be clear, I've heard and read about various dates when they broke up, so could have been written because of that, or fine-tuned once their breakup was imminent and part of their story.
A "Must Have" album, in any collection and a track beloved of all UK F1 fans.
I really enjoyed your reaction and commentary on this brilliant performance.
Fun fact: The Chain is the only song in their repertoire in which all 5 band mates get writing credit.
Oh cool! Thanks ☺️
@@JenniferGlatzhofer yw, I made another comment below w a suggestion if interested. I’ll def check out some more of your reviews : )
RIP Christine McVie, the finest singer of the late Mac. She was married to John Mc Vie. Never mentioned!
When Lindsay whips his head over to Stevie at 5:50 there are DAGGERS in his eyes.
Every time I see that (seeing as my name is Stevie, too), I feel it in my soul🥶
Petition for Jen to listen to the live version of Silver Springs next!
Love this song so much! I’d love to see a reaction of Zayn’s live performance of Alienated or Concrete Kisses from his current album Room Under the Stairs. 🙏🫶🏽
Lindsay wrote this song when he and Stevie were in the depths of their breakup; it's one of the ultimate "fuck you" lyrics of all time.
Legend has it that Christie McVie was the designated driver that night.
In all seriousness, her backup vocals are haunting. For a better showcase (albeit, short) of her backing, listen to “I’m So Afraid” also from this same 1982 concert. Lindsey sings on his one w Christie backing (no Stevie). The two of them together are beautiful.
World turning is another with mostly Christine and Lindsey. The ‘77 live version is great.
@@tracyjohnson5023 omg, the one at Largo where Christie is wearing a cute little skirt and playing maracas (?) at the beginning of? Love that one so much.
@@sfbayareagirl that's the one
@@tracyjohnson5023 aaaahhhh! I LOVE that one. She’s so cute and she and Lindsey sound so great together. But also love when Stevie comes in.
Also from Largo, it may be the same show, is “Secondhand News” there’s so much to pick apart in that one. It’s awesome.
Great live performance no doubt, but with this song I always prefer the studio version due to nuances in the music and vocals that appeal to my ear more than the lives.
Thanks for the reaction Jen!
She sounds so inspired by yoko when she does that scream.
The hatred and loathing is an almost physical presence, with the vocals eviscerating each other.
At the time there were, IIRC, 3 break-ups within the band!
Have you reacted to Silver Springs from the Dance by Fleetwood Mac? It's as charged as this one. Research the song. There's drama around the song, and 20 years later when Stevie finally performs it live... man oh man. You won’t be disappointed. ❤😂
I think Stevie Nicks had an answer in the song Go Your Own Way. I guess when there's large amounts of money and fame involved, oil and water do mix.
Go your own way was Lindsey's song. Dreams was Stevie's.
Cocaine probably isn't the best way to work thru your feelings about a bad relationship.
Jen check out a cover of the Chain by the HSCC band. It's Absolutely brilliant.
Lindsay was so hopped up on cocaine for this concert, and specifically this performance, that he couldn't be still, they all were. It was commonplace for them to take coke and drink before a concert, but this one specifically- you can see it in his eyes, and sweating, and hopping around like a maniac.
The Old Gray Whistle version is the best
It's very difficult to break up with someone when you both have dynamic personalities, and don't give yourselves the luxury of distance and time apart from one another. When you have to see them every morning at breakfast, and perform on stage with them every night while having to look and listen as your ex sings about you in a way that you feel is cruel...
Lindsay is toooo good
Nice one Jen. Don't apologise for focussing on the visals more: this was a very "visual " performance, and knowing the backstory makes catching the daggers looks and aggression not only understandable but essential. If you want to see an awesome and electrifying example of Lindsay Buckingham going off one on stage, check out this performance:
Video Title: Fleetwood Mac- I'm So afraid (Live from Boston)
Link: ua-cam.com/video/TDwg28bSjoI/v-deo.html
I would have been either 3 or 4 in jolly old England.
now, knowing what you know you now about the band and the song, go watch the 90's version they did for the Clinton's and you will literally see the same emotion.
Stevie wrote the lyrics. As hard as Lindsey is singing, its hard to imagine that she wrote them about him.
Stevie wrote the chorus - originally for another song and complained when Lindsey asked for them he was tearing the heart out of her song and didn't care. Lindsey wrote the verses. (Damn your love/Damn your lies) Later Stevie started saying she wrote it all like she started saying she wrote Dreams in 10 minutes when before that she said it was written over a year.
The intensity of this performance is also down to a hell of a lot of cocaine....... love, hatred, emotion, genius talent and many, many lines of coke!!!!
The worst wounds are the near fatal ones that won't heal. If "looks could kill" it would have been him instead of me.
They are kind of unik history. And Buckingham`s fenomenal fingerpicking guitar and distinctive voice has over time got a special place printed in my mind. And years later, this happened: ua-cam.com/video/27QaDxG36DM/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/2nkAJogQioc/v-deo.html
They play Gypsy next
Reaction please on Fab Jazz So Tinha De Ser Com Voce or any other of their Glasshouse sessions.
Hey a lot people don't think stevie nicks is a deva for her had relationship with mick fleetwood liston if wasn't for lindsey stevie would not in fleetwood mac they just wanted lindsey because of his guitar playing but he said if you want me you have to take my girlfriend too stevie it was too christine mcvie.
Stevie frequently hunts for eye contact with whomever she is singing with. An excellent excuse to check out her duet with Tom Petty. Stop Dragging My Heart Around.
The strangest thing about this performance is Lindsay Buckingham dressed like a door to door salesman in Alabama during the Great Depression.
Lol, he shoulda worn it in the Little Lies video. He wore his Miami Vice suit in that.
Got his outfits mixed up!
PLEASE REACT...pearl jam black mtv unplugged🔥🔥👍👍
One of the best rock-blues band🤘
the OLD fm was the blues garage band. the NEW fm is the rock band.
TS has nothing on FM.
I like the 1997 version better.
A mountain of cocaine and a bunch of breakups is either going to be hell or genius - or a bit of both.
Christine was going through a breakup at the same time.
this is nothing compared to their ''silver springs'' live performance.
theyre connecting to cocaine... thats whats keeping that going..where genius and drugs meet....
The coca was coursing through Lindsey and Stevie especially for this show. The whole concert film was great!
The cocaine would've just added more fuel to an already blazing fire.
If you want to hear Lindsay really vent, try reacting to "Not That Funny" from the same concert.
ua-cam.com/video/VbrCeJdyPqE/v-deo.html
As always they put on a masterful performance despite, and fueled by, emotion. But some of their energy had to be fueled by their cocaine use during the period I'm thinking.
I’d like to know what the cocaine budget for this tour was.
This performance is legendary. I knew I was gonna have a problem with a vocal coach reaction to this. You are great at what you do. But I just don't get how anyone can watch this for the FIRST TIME and interrupt it at crucial moments to casually (or even not so casually) comment on it. You only get one first listen/watch. Obviously, this is an 'it's me, it's not you' thing. And a perfectly legit criticism of my ridiculous ranting is that I knew what this was and I still came to see your reactions. I made it all the way to 'Yeah I know I'm stopping it in the middle of the big build up but....' and then started back without a rewind. I had to bail. Again, it's not you it's me. I just don't see how you guys and gals do it. If anyone had stopped this video during the first time I was watching it, there would have been a fight, LOL. Keep doing your thing and maybe I'll get over mine.
ABBA..
The Winner Takes it All...vevo
another real life breakup
Remember...Cocaine
Ahhhh the amount of coke they were on here is insane
He can't stand still because he's coked up LOL!
So.Much.Cocaine 😂
Less "analysis" because it is way too much and just an interrupting nuisance !!!
Very Annoying
Lady you talk too much…we don’t want to hear you! All you have to do is once in awhile, 😡
Does anybody know the song that little riff Lindsey plays as they come back in after the bass solo comes from?
I know it but cannot for the life of me put a song title to it. Help if you can.
