I think the show should be live action because I personally feel kids can relate more. Kids and now adults, grew up with the books, living their own versions, being majorly depressed from the dumb movies, but now they have a chance to watch the show made the right way.
I'm pretty sure that they did a study and found that people related to animated characters more so... in conclusion, animated is superior

I always wanted it to be animated but i was scared that they'll just make it SUPER cartooney-ish. I still want the action and the intensity and the tension. I'm afraid that if they animate it, they'll just make it very child friendly and stuff. You get the point. Well anyways I'm still grateful that they're making an official good adaptation.

Parnika Jaiswal that’s actually such a good point. But really, the book series is kinda child friendly too, so it sure Will be tough. I mean, you can make it jaiden animations style in which people of all ages will enjoy it, but there is also a slight problem. Logan Lerman, the guys who played Percy in the movies, is obligated by contract that if there were, say, a third movie, he’d have to do it. I don’t know if it will apply since this is an adaptation, buuutttt I dunno lmao this is so long

i would just like to point to avatar: the last airbender as a refutement for two of the points brought up against animation: the visual effects and the emotional connection. like, the visual effects in atla are stunning. each bending style is unique and fits with the element. and i'm pretty damn sure most of us cried over leaves from the vine, or any other emotional beats in the story. there are characters we can relate to. i don't look at sokka or zuko and think "lol can't relate" no i relate to sokka's goofiness and zuko's awkwardness! it's what makes so many cartoons great.

Honestly I want a live action.
1. When the kids grow up its gonna feel like we are going up with them and we get to see them change.
2. We already have a bunch of talented artist that drew the characters.
3. We get to see all the monsters that we read about come to life.
4. The special effects. Can you imagine riptide and the monster dust it will be soo cool.
I have more reasons but this is already long. Remember this is my opinion let me know what you think.

I've heard some people say that they want the pjo adaptation to be "the next harry potter", and i think thats one of the reasons why people want a live action: they want it to copy harry potter and be live action (just like harry potter was) to be successful, but imo the pjo adaptation SHOULD NOT copy someone else's success, it just has to be its own thing to be good, and the best way to do that is by making the adaptation an animated series. I really hope it's not too late to do so, but regardless of what Rick decides to do with the adaptation, i will still watch it with great interest
I think it will never be exactly like HP, they are a whole different series. They might take some similarities to HP by casting never before seen actors for the main characters, but no matter what it’s the PJ story, it will be amazing either way as long as it’s not like the Fox movies
It will never be Harry Potter the hp books had and entire series to go off for the countless movies, while there are only a handful Percy Jackson books so the series will have to be short otherwise they will have to make stuff up that will not relate to the story or worse change it to a more unfavorable outcome. Saying this I do not believe this will be the next Harry Potter

I think that one of the big things that stumped me was that Percy Jackson takes place in the real world. Like sure, that may not be a problem because they can still animate it, but it just feels weird to me because I haven't seen any cartoon that take place in the real world. This is not to say they don't exist (because I don't know), just that I haven't seen any.
However, I would also really like it to be animated. Mostly because I want the characters to look like how I imagined them and to grow up like I imagined them, and because (and don't even lie and say this isn't true) more people will see it. I can already see the controversy, so let me explain. The younger generation is more likely to watch cartoons. And adults are more likely to let their kids.
I have a younger brother, and I want him to be able to enjoy Percy Jackson as a cartoon.

keep in mind that a TV show will spend more time to flesh out the characters and story, and therefore spend alot more time in one set location. Which likely reduces filming time and costs. Also many actors have played believable 17 year olds at age like 22. If they do a tight filming schedule and the actors looks relatively the same, they can make HOO over the five years between the actor being 17 and like 23. Also HOO would be hell to write and direct for anyway, and will probably be condensed. I agree that animation makes more sense, but I just really want it to be live action

i was thinking they could make it into 3 seasons, the first season would be TLH and SON, the second would be MOA and HOH and the third would be BOO.
They could film the season together but release them in parts so s1 part 1 would be TLH and part 2 would be SON. there would be a bit of a wait between the two parts but not as much as there would be between seasons.
this way they could get it filmed over 3 years so the characters wouldnt age as much
I think the pjo series would be much better if animated, one of the many reasons is that with no actors, just drawings, the identity of the character is more, idk, real? I mean you look at the actor playing the character, you reacognize a real person and a fictional character. But if it's just a drawing you only see the character. I agree, plus the actors for a live action probably won’t live up to every fans’ expectations of the characters look like. With animation, the editors have so much more freedom to make the characters look like the original descriptions

I think live action would be better just because you feel more emotion when you see real kids. You can still feel emotion when watching animation, as shown by Up and The Lion King, but in this case I feel having real kids will make it feel so much more real and impactful. Like imagine how scary it would be to see a literal child next to a huge Minotaur made to seem real with modern CGI. It would be more impactful than seeing it animated. The same with May and Luke. You can empathize more because these are actual children. Imagine seeing a real seven year old Annabeth on the street. I just feel like it would hold more weight. It would make the monsters so much scarier, it would make the fights so much more meaningful because these are actual 13 an 14 years old being killed in battle. So yes, you can feel emotion with an animated series, but I just don’t think it would be as impactful as seeing an actual kid. All the other points I completely agree with though. Animation makes so much more sense time wise and economically. So with way, as long as the series is good, I’m not complaining.
I completely agree with you, also, with a live action you can see the characters grow up and grow up along with them. If that makes sense (sometimes I’m really bad at explaining things). Like if you look at the first Harry Potter movie and then the Deathly Hallows you can see how much they’ve grown, and it impacts the films that much more. However this is just my opinion, but Overall, I think that a live action might work out slightly better. Also for dramatic or serious moments like “Family, Luke. You promised.” And when Zoë turns/fades into the stars and becomes a constellation, Manhattan being frozen in time, etc. I personally feel like those will have a greater impact with a live action than with an animated series.

@@randomperson7489 I think that the pint about live action emotion is good, but its also important to think about the time span of Harry Potter, and the fact that those were movies instead of a series. The time differences between the books starts out being whole years but then it changes as it goes on, too months even days difference, when you have a whole year of production, as she said in the video, the physical changes the actors will undergo might be too much. Yes actors like Tom Holland have played characters younger than they are, but those people have baby faces at their current ages, theres no guarantee that a younger percy will grow into the correct looking older percy and remain that way for several years.
I completely agree with you. Kids will take it more seriously if it is actual kids. If it is animated they with think "oh well. It isnt real because it's just a story." And deaths will seem less important. I personally have cried when watching animation. I'm not saying it isnt sad. I'm just saying it is less realistic.
Though I agree that I would like to see an animated version. I want it to be live action because for those kids like me who are the age that Percy Jackson would be in the first book. I want to really grow up with the kids so like when he'll be 15 i'll be 15 when he's 16 i will be 16 and I want to see stuff like Percy and his friends talking and then a voice crack happens and this wouldn't be a fake voice crack this would be a real one because the kid will be going through puberty the same time I will be die will be growing up the same time Percy we'll be growing up. I understand your points, but I believe that live action would be the smartest idea for the PJO series, but animation for Heroes of Olympus.
With live action, we will be able to grow up with the characters for the first five books and we, as the audience, will learn to grow with the actors quirks and really experience the characters we’ve grown to love in real life.
But as for HOO, it wouldn’t be smart to continue it as live action, because since all five books are in the span of less than a year, the actors would continue to grow up including the new characters introduced (Hazel, Frank, Piper, Leo, Jason, etc) . If they could do it live action for HOO, go for it, but not sure how that would exactly work long term.

The reason I think animation wouldn't work is because I don't trust Disney to animate it good. I know it sounds unbelievable because Disney are the kings of animation, but hear me out. A lot of Disney cartoons these days have a certain animation style I'm personaly not a fan of, like Gravity Falls. I do think Gravity Falls is a great show and the animation fits with its kinda goofy tone, but I don't think it'll fit with Percy Jackson's tone, and just too many cartoons these days are animated in that style. Also WE NEED REDEMPTION! We got 2 awful movies and one good musical (which I didn't see but I did listen to the songs) but we need a GOOD live action piece of media to redeem us from the horror that is 2010's Lightning Thief and 2013's Sea of Monsters

I was going through my home page and immediately clicked on this. I also feel the exact same way and wanted to see why Julia thinks it should be animated. I agree 100% and when I heard it would be live action I was a bit disappointed. Actually not a bit a lot disappointed I love Percy Jackson and thought a lot of the action scenes would seem more natural and even though older audiences may not want to watch an animated show younger kids would watch it and maybe lead them to reading the books. Sorry this is long but I feel very strongly about animation and hope others feel the same.
I want something like ATLA. It has about the same age demographic, they both have tons of lore and adult fans, supernatural powers would be similarly animated, and characters don’t age overly fast. Also, the ATLA characters are super relatable.

I think the percy jacksom fandom related to virias art styke so much it actually made Rick Riordan change the official artwork on his website. I think that 3 D animation for TV that is being produced now is good 3nough that it would work, but it would probably be best suited for 2d animation.
Dude! Percy Jackson would be perfect as an animated series. I mean, have you seen Dragon Prince and Tales of Arcadia!? Those shows are so freaking awesome and I related to so many of the characters! I completely agree with you. Before I wanted a live action but you made really good points. Ik this is gonna sound unoriginal and like a lot of other comments but when you started talking about it being animated I thought about avatar. I feel like they can still make them look realistic and still show growth within animated characters. And also like you said they would be able to do it during the pandemic and at home. Now I’m totally on the animated series team. It would just make things so much easier and still feel just as enjoyable. Also they already have an idea of how they could draw the animations and characters because they could use some of the viria art for inspiration. I’ve seen the viria art and it looks amazing and is how I imagine them to look. And one last point is that it would showcase the amazing artists that are out there somewhere and it would be nice to see amazing artists be appreciated

For everyone who is using Avatar as an example for why it should be animated, I would rethink that. I love avatar, in my opinion, it is a near-perfect show with beautiful animation and brilliant storytelling and it does prove everything that was stated in this video but what invalidates the argument is the fact that Netflix is producing a live-action Avatar the last Airbender series. (If you didn't know about this you should know that Avatars original creators are working on it and a majority of the fandom is extremely excited for it) In my opinion, this just proves that no matter how well done an animated show is people will want to see it in live-action and it is a well-known fact that many people discredited animated things. My dad dislikes fantasy but if there was a live-action version of Avatar there would be a chance he would watch it as it stands he won't even touch it.

There are a lot of pros and cons to both;
With animation there is a lot of drawing etc. But filming for a streaming service is very different, to filming for Tv filming for a to show for a weekly release you could be filming an episode a few weeks before releasing but for a streaming service it happens way before release so there's a delay.
Animation takes away the choice of actors; when making a non improve animation actors don't really get a choice in their performance. Dana stinegold (Girl scout beetlejucie) said that when doing a voice acting part for nick she would do the line in 4 or 5 different ways and not be told anything until it airs. She got told how to do it each time and then the director picked what one they liked best she had no ability to make choices at all. She said there were pros and cons to that.
However with animation the point of keeping charters young holds up really well

Hello, I also want an animatic show and I totally agree with you. I've just discover your channel and I'm very happy about It because here in Spain does NOBODY read the Percy Jackson books and I dont have people to talk about them, so thank u
I think it would be better animated, but live action will also work (as long as it's done well). In terms of ageing, shows actually usually take less time than movies to make, they just do one episode a week, so it moves much faster, and with Heroes of Olympus, they could do multiple seasons a year. but on everything else, I completely agree!
If it's going to be animated, would you want it to be a She-Ra/Avatar: TLA/Voltron type of animation or a Tangled/Frozen kind of animation? I feel like I'd be more excited to see a Voltron type of animation, although it might be weird to see different types of effects blended in. However I understand that most people want to be extras, and they might be a bit upset if it changes to animation. Maybe they could be voice actors! Also I understand what you said about the actors being different ethnicities or not being good but not looking like the characters. This links in to voice acting bc the voices need to be on FLEEK. I was originally looking forward to live-action, but maybe it'd be better if it were animated?
Animation can definitely convey emotion. I swear the extras in Gravity Falls have made me more emotional than the main cast of riverdale

I 100% agree. Animating the show will really capture the vibe of the series. I also think it would be amazing if they got some of the cast from The Lightning Thief Musical to voice act some of the characters especially Chris McCarrel as Percy. They can expend and do so much more with the show if it was animated. So just pray to the gods that Disney will hear our pleads and will animate it!

before I didn't know if I wanted the series in live action or animation format, but after watching your video, I prefer animation. And wouldn't it be nice if it had a streak like "How to Train Your Dragon"? Because I always imagined Hiccup and Astrid as Percy and Annabeth. True! What are we going to do about Thalia if it's live-action? She appears multiple times, in Dark Prophecy, The Lost Hero and Tyrant's Tomb, and she's supposed to look and be the same age! Another reason why it'll probably be better animated, though Uncle Rick will probably find a way to work around it.

even though i appreciate that your friends would relate to cartoon characters, the general audience will simply not watch the show just because they will think its for kids. for example, my sisters (non fans of the books) ONLY would want to watch the show if its live action

Animation is closer to the books than live action. With a book or an animation, the limits are the imagination of the reader or artist. With a movie, it’s the technology of the time, which forces you to conform to reality.
I disagree. I think the live action wouldn't have the same effect. There's is only so much darkness and violence they can put in the live action show while still making it marketable towards kids and teens, which is Disney's ultimate goal. I think they would have more freedom to express the original themes and story with animation.

I just feel like the biggest problem with making the show animated is the art style. It isn't surprising if half the fandom would hate it and it's impossible to cater to everyone. Realism (life-action) is an "art style" everyone is used to and no one will argue about.
Personally, I don't care whether it's animated or not, since I'm probably not gonna have access to watch it, it's just a point I want to state.

i think an ideal adaptation would be a very high-quality live action. however, that is a logistical nightmare in terms of budget and characters' ages (like you said). additionally, i think after 5 years of doing the pjo show, the actors will want to expand their horizons and might not want to do the hoo series.
i really think that an animated show would be amazing if it'sdone right. atla changed my whole perspective on animation and i think that percy jackson would be amazing if done like that.

the issue i have is that SFX can age poorly, since its a live action im hoping they will go for a more styleized route with the SFX than trying to look as "real" as possible. That way the series can age well & may also be less expensive

I’m reading the series for the first time to hype myself up for the show, and as I was reading, I was having many different visions in my head for adaptations since I’m majoring in film as well. For example, I saw something akin to Aquaman and Ocean-Master’s fight when I read the fight between Percy and Ares in The Lightning Thief. And, no cap, as I was reading The Titan’s Curse I saw either a manga panel or a shot from an anime in my head as Thalia manipulated the mist in chapter one.
YES!!! I totally agree!!! You just said a lot of the stuff on my mind! Like take Avatar for example, Percy Jackson can be as good (or better)! But well, anything works for me as long as it's as enjoyable as the books! (PJO hasn't even been made yet, but if they in any way someday make HoO too... I'm gonna be so excited to see House of Hades...) But really I hope we get an adaptation we will remember forever!!

Animation has come so far and recent animated movies like Incredibles 2 and Into the Spider-Verse have vindicated animation as a valid medium for storytelling. I personally think that animation will, if done well, always deliver more creative freedom for fantasy than live action, so I agree fully that this series should be animated!
I personally want it to be animated. Like did you see the fanart? It's perfect. But at this point, I don't care if it's animated or not if it's good.
But for PJO I definitely see it more animated. More like anime/cartoon, or you know like avatar just saying...I definitely want it to be animated. 100% would watch.
I believe the style of Rise of The Guardians from Dreamworks could work really well for an animated Percy Jackson series! Like you said Percy Jackson feels more like it should be animated but the argument of the logistics to do all the other series is the best argument for it not to be live-action. Also, it should not EVER be referred to as the 'new Harry Potter', therefore it might be good to do it as an animated series.

yes yes yes to everything you just said! I loved Trollhunters and I am so sad Wizards is the end of the saga and Del toro and Hirsch would do such a good job with PJO! I feel like animation as a medium is the best and most flexible enough to be able to accommodate all the nuance and history behind PJO while also allowing for the creative crew to really put in the work in making the best adaptation possible and putting their own spin on it.

I do think that animation would be great but sadly some people still don’t take animation seriously so I think that’s why they aren’t on board with the idea of an animated series. Ex: Into the Spiderverse is one of the best (if not the best) Spider-Man films ever and lots of people didn’t watch it because it was animated. There’s also a lot of shows nowadays with young kids/teens as the main characters (Stranger Things, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) that are very popular so I think Disney might want to appeal to that audience. I’m personally fine with anything , as long as I get to see my favorite book series on screen. I trust that they’ll make a good adaptation especially with Rick helping. :)

Although I prefer live-action, you made valid points for animation. Ultimately, I think Disney wants live-action and I think Rick does too and I don’t think anyone’s gonna change their mind.
I do worry about too much CGI and I really hope it’s not cringy.
However, I disagree on the character aging thing because they could easily change the timeline and spread everything out, also once actors hit 18, they can still come off as an older teen for a significant number of years, so it’s not a huge issue. However, I think animation does solve that problem better.
Overall, I’m just happy to get an adaptation and I just really hope that no matter what, it’s good haha.
I’d rather it be live action but anyone can think what they think.

I agree! It’d be hard to find actors who can look and act like the characters. It would be easier to find child actors who can voice act than child actors who can act and do all the crazy stunts and battles and stuff.
Also, you’re right, the aging! Thalia has to stay 16 from Titan’s Curse all the way through Trials of Apollo. Percy has to stay 17 through all of Heroes of Olympus.
*AND* if they decide to make a couple books one season, then they can show animated characters aging.
