have watched a number of times. Tied up a leader per instructions. Made a world of difference!.Thanks. I'm submitting a question in that regard but will submit by email. Thanks again for the video.
Great video - thanks!! Would this same recipe work on a 6wt setup? Or would you lighten up the leader with 6wt? Thanks again for all of the great videos you guys put out there!!
Thank you for making this video. I've been struggling to deer hair frogs and mouse flies. I was using 6x tippet but i didn't know what pound i should use for the bigger flies. Ill try this out i missed out on some really big fish because i was recasting trying to get it to the fish and i end up spooking them.
Glad to help. You now know that you were WAAAAAAYYYY off on that tippet there. 6X is for the tiniest of dry flies. Also watch this and it will help you understand- ua-cam.com/video/AtXPJszdW9s/v-deo.html
I used to use blood knots in my custom leaders... but I've been trying double surgeons too... I'm not sure which is better... i've seen a lot of debate online.
I wish my ignorant ass had watched this earlier today. I was fishing a snook popper but using it for bass. Long story short, I just did’t have the right leader and tippet. I got broke off on a huge largemouth. I thought it was my knot but then in the middle of the rock out I see my fly floating, that bass spat it out! I waited patiently till the wind blew it back over an hour later. I’m going back after trying my own leader! There’s some giant bass in that pit and I don’t think they’re accustomed to seeing fly presentations. Thanks for this video. It helped so much.
Just came across this video, really appreciate the info. I've always fished for bass with traditional gear. As someone who is new to fly fishing for bass, why the need to taper the line down to 15lb, can you not tie the 15lb directly to the fly line?
I think if you buy it tapered you are good. He is just creating his own tapered leader himself by tying those different sizes together to help with weight transference.
So what’s the advantage of either tying your own? Or even using one of those rio or SA leaders as opposed to just using a standard 0x or 1x tapered leader?
Please send any and all questions directly to the folks at the shop and they will be happy to help. That’s what they do! You can email them or call them. Thanks.

Question: On last leader you tie 0X tippet to 1’ of 12# leader end, is 0X larger than 12#? Most charts I use show 0X around 15#. I tie my own and MRO & Brians videos have really helped me understand the principles. Thank y’all so much for helping us fellow anglers! 🎣
The X rating has nothing to do with lb test. The X refers to the diameter. Pound test doesn't transfer energy. For sure he would never tie a larger piece onto a smaller piece. Feel free to call Pat at the shop if he can help further. He'd be happy to chat.
Neither. Typically Clear off of a floating line. We use Ultragreen for sink tips and intermediate lines. Feel free to contact the shop if they can help further. They know best of course.
Thanks for watching. Safe to say that if he doesn't talk about it here in this video then he doesn't. Feel free to e-mail him or call him at the shop though with questions. He's always happy to help.
He can't get them into the country right now and hasn't been able to for about a year. Not at all fresh out, we haven't had them in months and months. We have thousands and thousands on backorder. Stay tuned and hopefully things get better here soon. Thanks for checking.
No, store bought leaders do not work as well and are not as much specific to tasks. You should tie your own leaders because they work better and will save you a ton of money.
Terrific leader info for tying my own. Very much appreciated, Pat. I've searched the MRO vid library and have so far struck out. So here's the question: a technique for fishing poppers/streamers/divers on sink tip fly line. I get the reasoning for the streamers and divers. What I don't get is how or why you're fishing poppers on a sink tip. You and Brian have both mentioned this on previous vids and you specifically mention using it for the Umpqua Swimming frog and Brian using the Swimmy Jimmy here - ua-cam.com/video/1Y87jC1jAbA/v-deo.html. Perhaps an in-the-field video on fishing all three but most specifically for poppers? (ROAD TRIP!) Thanks for what you guys do, Pat. Oh, and Brian ... WHEEERE'S THE BOOK!?!
I asked Brian a question about using pound test for a leader and he claims you guys don't understand pounds it's only line diameter. Now your talking about using different pound line for leaders?
Hey Dave, thanks for watching! I think you're getting mixed up in semantics. On the packaging you have pounds and diameter. Pat is just referring to that as a title for the leader so you know what you're selecting. The important factor is the diameter. I think what Brian is trying to communicate is you'd never build a leader off of pound test, as most folks mistakenly do, e.g., if I'm fishing for a big bass, I want a strong fishing line. Well, that isn't important when building your leader. What is, is building a leader that will correctly deliver the fly, popper, or whatever to your target. If you'd like to discuss this with the guys who do the fishing, email the shop admin@madriveroutfitters.com, they'd be more than happy to talk more!
Please send your questions over to the shop via e-mail or give them a call and they will be happy to help. Sorry but we don't have that information here to share.....but they will. Thanks.
Critical Mass Uh, that’s because the diameters he’s giving are off the “X” chart. There IS no X. Should probably look into that before you make a stupid comment. In public.
Get out there and catch some bass! Thanks as always for watching and stay tuned 👍
Perfect. Why can't all tutorial help videos be done this simple. Thanks Pat.
Thanks for watching.
Just caught my biggest bass so far on my fly rod and it was awesome
Awesome! Did you send a photo to the shop? They'd love to see it.
I heard about tying leaders from your channel quite often. After some research I started to tie my own and my fishing has greatly improved.

Blood knots if bigger than 0X. Surgeons knot if smaller than 0X. Easy answer, no debate here.
Would you suggest using a tippet ring to attach the last section of the leader?
No need with poppers but you can if you want. Feel free to call the shop and discuss with Pat personally. He'd be happy to chat.
For the medium poppers you finish with 2' of 12lb but at the end what type of leader you use to tie the popper? Thanks great video
Please send an e-mail over to Pat at the shop and he'll be happy to help. He doesn't come around these parts much. Thanks.

@@Madriveroutfitters That's understandable. Hopefully you'll be able to get your hands on some soon because bass are hitting topwater where I am.

Never. Blood knots only. Please contact the shop if you have any further questions and they will be happy to help.
