As a certified mechanic i can tell you from the spray paint on the shock that the car was in a rear accident you needed to take it to a frame specialist to make sure its square.... and replace the other side lower upper and hub assembly... those aluminum arms are so thick they dont bend very easy ...so it had to of had a accident from that right rear quarter panel
this is perhaps the best Tesla Model S video I have seen. For once someone actually gets dirty and doesn't talk tech. For crap sake,,, its a car! You treat it like a car! thank you.
I'm not a mechanic, so that was very impressive to me. It's one thing taking it all apart, quite another putting it back together correctly. I can't imagine what Tesla would have charged for that. Good job!
Interesting video. But did you identify any bent parts?? what was the problem. The upper part of the suspension geometry seems fairly weak. It seems they figured the lower arm is plenty strong. Since it was forward it would either be backup damage or acceleration damage...
Man Meets Garage -You should have mentioned that you bought the car at auction in the video or description. Video kind of leads people to think Tesla has bad quality or something. Most likely, the prior owner smacked a curb or had minor accident that bent the control arm.
I used to work on front end for a living. I'm impressed with your work on the floor with the simple hand tool and floor jack, stand... Keep up the good work!

Had a similar issue with mine in November. Car would start swaying on slight right curves. Turned out the wheel hub had fatigued unnaturally or was damaged at the factory (it was 3 months new at the time) and there was enough room for the right rear wheel to start moving around in weird ways under load. Its cool though that you have the knowledge and skills to fix something like this yourself; saved yourself a hell of a lot of money.
Yes, nice *Completely unjustified* work! If this had happened on a BMW or a Merc, everybody would be laughing at them! Whereas with the teslslsasl, people are continuously trying to find excuses! Yeah like BMW and Merc haven't had their share of issues. Cracked heads ring a bell? How about the Merc 190? BTW this was most likely the result of an accident, even maybe hitting a curb rather hard. He bought the car at an auction, so there's that.
He bought it at auction so it's possible that it has been in some kind of accident before he got it. You can also see over spray on the strut where that side was painted.
watching this seeing the comments of the part being bent hmm it may not been the parts being bent but it could been the bushings that are on the a arms just a idea
You said the alignment was ok ? With one half an inch setback?(that is the wheelbase from side to side)not possible on a newer 4 wheel alignment machine .
Only when the suspension is under compression it would show. Alignment only reads front and rear wheels driver or passenger side. No sensors to read bothwheels rear or front at the same time.
Nice job, but what was the actual problem? Did you mark the alignment eccentrics and put them back in the same position or set them midway during reassembly? It will be interesting to see what it looks like after the alignment. Hopefully you fixed it.
Great video! Do you have any details on what happened on that corner? I see some over spray on the strut so it look like that corner was painted at some point in time.
Geez did you fix it? What was bent. Where did you get the parts? Hate to think how much they cost!! Any idea how it happened. I would have loved to have seen the new arms next to the old ones.
Is it possible that this was a bushing issue that was bored of center and when installed caused a mechanical off set? It very unlikely that you would be able to deform or bend cast aluminum without it showing cracks.
OMG--That looked a lot of Work--well done---yesterday dropped into a pot hole here in UK in my Model S --- hoping all ok---getting it checked this week --- GREAT VIDEO--- i'VE SUBSCRIBED---
Most likely somebody raced the car and hit a curb with this tire, that's why the control arm was bent or as previously mentioned the car had been in an accident. Also when you took off the strut there was no need for any rope or clamps, you only need it if you dissemble the spring and shock absorber.
I also own a 2013/2014 Tesla that I bought from a private garage. The owner got sick and died (not because he bought a Tesla) and it sat uncharged for a long time. And he never did a service. This caused a problem with the charging system, but I contacted Tesla and they fixed it under the warranty. Since I don't have your mechanical ability, I am relying on the and they are very nice in Bern. You said that there was no tire wear at all before? Did you notice a change in alignment after? I haven't finished watching the video. I want to buy a Nissan NV-200 EV for my company but the battery isn't enough. Can you help me with getting about 300 km range with a 720 kg payload? I talked with Tesla and they said they will give me some ideas, but they can't do the work. There are lots of people in my area of Switzerland that want to switch to EV but they need range.
+Chris Trigg I should have done one. When I was comparing off camera, very hard to see. Bushings we're fine. For sure it was either the spindle or the lower control arm.
So what component(s) were bent or damaged??? Was it a bushing? - I can't imagine deflecting these massive elements. Must have been an accident. I don't like to work on suspensions. I have possibly the same Craftsman air compressor like yours. I use the air tools as much as I can, certainly during dis-assembly. Air ratchet, 3/8 inch butterfly impact wrench and even the 1/2 inch impact. Torquing during assembly is a pain but advisable.
Can a DIY'er install other parts on his second hand Tesla Model S? I have heard the software needs to be reprogrammed for some parts. How do you solve that? Can you make a video of that?
Good video -- but how the heck did you get the inboard front nut off the lower control arm? I see the slot up from under where the aero panel was, but the access isn't straight? Did you use a flex head wrench??
okay... where did you get your parts on a take out basis from Tesla? what did those parts cost? .. Your car has obviously been curb slammed .. this happens when the car is pushed too hard into a corner and the back end washes out... seen several videos where this has happened... did you check that strut for cracks in the mounts? Ive a 2014 P85 now 135,000 uk miles I think the problem is a lot of hard launches deform the rubber bushes as the upper control arm is the torque reaction point and only being RWD and 2.2 ton thats a lot of torque. I am having trouble sourcing struts for a non-air suspension Model S. Do you have a lead on where to find replacement struts like the one featured in your video? Thanks!
Great undertaking, and without a shop manual! I would have had a few extra bolts when I finished that job. Nice to see someone working on the Tesla. The first I've seen on YT. I have a 2014 ordered, due next month, and I'll be sure to check the tire clearance when I get it. I'm thinking it may have been caused by the 21"'s hitting a good pothole. Another reason why I wanted 19"s in my Model S.
How is pricing on Tesla parts compared to other american premium cars? Those parts looks extremely expenive with all that machining done to them. Also it looks that Tesla used steel bolts againts the aluminium, if they have I'm a bit concerned with corrosion because of the salting here in Norway.. Thanks for giving us such a detailed shot of the suspension!
Stainless steel is often used with aluminum. I'm not sure if that's what Tesla did, or which SS, but I would presume that would be the case, since I've never heard of corrosion being a problem with Model S.
Great video! I'm really impressed with your confidence about taking things apart and putting it all back together, all with just a floor jack and jack stands.
ClayDayz lol sorry. Tires have been awesome and the wheels are perfect fit for the size of the model s. Expensive for a new set of tires. Great Cornering and no problem launching. Thanks

Show folks what these little things look like so if they're gonna try it, they kind of know what they're looking for. Nicely done!
Surprised that your p85 did not come with the air suspension. I thought all the model S performance came with it. It might have been a $2,500 option like a lot of Tesla’s stuff…

Could be worn out bushings, since it is a heavy car.
