As a certified mechanic i can tell you from the spray paint on the shock that the car was in a rear accident you needed to take it to a frame specialist to make sure its square.... and replace the other side lower upper and hub assembly... those aluminum arms are so thick they dont bend very easy ...so it had to of had a accident from that right rear quarter panel
this is perhaps the best Tesla Model S video I have seen. For once someone actually gets dirty and doesn't talk tech. For crap sake,,, its a car! You treat it like a car! thank you.
I'm not a mechanic, so that was very impressive to me. It's one thing taking it all apart, quite another putting it back together correctly. I can't imagine what Tesla would have charged for that. Good job!
I used to work on front end for a living. I'm impressed with your work on the floor with the simple hand tool and floor jack, stand... Keep up the good work!
Had a similar issue with mine in November. Car would start swaying on slight right curves. Turned out the wheel hub had fatigued unnaturally or was damaged at the factory (it was 3 months new at the time) and there was enough room for the right rear wheel to start moving around in weird ways under load. Its cool though that you have the knowledge and skills to fix something like this yourself; saved yourself a hell of a lot of money.
Larry puts two fingers in the passenger side wheel well Driver side he puts three fingers into wheel well. re-watch you can see passenger side his fingers are lower (note panel horizontal line and his fingers are higher off the ground, right?) WHY didn't he actually measure the gap? You can try on your own car. insert 2 fingers and then do again with 3 fingers (which of course means you are further above the ground. This may be why no one could measure anything wrong a the alignment tests. It was great to see the replacement, he did a really nice job.
Yes, nice *Completely unjustified* work! If this had happened on a BMW or a Merc, everybody would be laughing at them! Whereas with the teslslsasl, people are continuously trying to find excuses! And by the way if something goes wrong with that bit of the car, the first thing telslsa will say is that warranty has been voided.
Yeah like BMW and Merc haven't had their share of issues. Cracked heads ring a bell? How about the Merc 190? BTW this was most likely the result of an accident, even maybe hitting a curb rather hard. He bought the car at an auction, so there's that.
He bought it at auction so it's possible that it has been in some kind of accident before he got it. You can also see over spray on the strut where that side was painted.
watching this seeing the comments of the part being bent hmm it may not been the parts being bent but it could been the bushings that are on the a arms just a idea
Great video! I'm really impressed with your confidence about taking things apart and putting it all back together, all with just a floor jack and jack stands.
OMG--That looked a lot of Work--well done---yesterday dropped into a pot hole here in UK in my Model S --- hoping all ok---getting it checked this week --- GREAT VIDEO--- i'VE SUBSCRIBED---
Great undertaking, and without a shop manual! I would have had a few extra bolts when I finished that job. Nice to see someone working on the Tesla. The first I've seen on YT. I have a 2014 ordered, due next month, and I'll be sure to check the tire clearance when I get it. I'm thinking it may have been caused by the 21"'s hitting a good pothole. Another reason why I wanted 19"s in my Model S.
Interesting video. But did you identify any bent parts?? what was the problem. The upper part of the suspension geometry seems fairly weak. It seems they figured the lower arm is plenty strong. Since it was forward it would either be backup damage or acceleration damage...
Man Meets Garage -You should have mentioned that you bought the car at auction in the video or description. Video kind of leads people to think Tesla has bad quality or something. Most likely, the prior owner smacked a curb or had minor accident that bent the control arm.
Nice job. Also nice to see a UA-cam video where jack stands, eye protection and torque wrenches are the norm. Way too many weekend warriors out there working unsafely.
I’m at your feet. That was some serious back breaking work. Wouldn’t it have been easier if you had had a lift available? Be careful how much punishment you heap on your lower back. You’re young so you won’t feel it now, but you will, when you become older. Take care of your body now, and it won’t come back and hurt you later. Excellent job, by the way. I’m no mechanic but your work couldn’t have been easy even under the best of circumstances. From what I’ve heard Tesla doesn’t put out a “Chilton’s Repair Manual” for Teslas.
Good video, and great job. If I may add a suggestion for you. Perhaps add in some close in shots of each important part (not all just the important ones) and give a quick bit of info on how they work. Show folks what these little things look like so if they're gonna try it, they kind of know what they're looking for. Nicely done!
i have same issue caster is off one side (did the finger test lol). great video, i follow your guide and change the hub that didn't fix it. so i change lower control arm and fix it finally. i was sceptical that lower control look so beeffy, how can it be bent right? i was wrong. when i took the old one out and lay it next to new one.. i can confirm the bent is lower front of the arm (arm left/right same part flipable) so anyone have rear suspension caster is off. i recommend change the lower control arm 1st..
Nice job, but what was the actual problem? Did you mark the alignment eccentrics and put them back in the same position or set them midway during reassembly? It will be interesting to see what it looks like after the alignment. Hopefully you fixed it.
Most likely somebody raced the car and hit a curb with this tire, that's why the control arm was bent or as previously mentioned the car had been in an accident. Also when you took off the strut there was no need for any rope or clamps, you only need it if you dissemble the spring and shock absorber.
Only when the suspension is under compression it would show. Alignment only reads front and rear wheels driver or passenger side. No sensors to read bothwheels rear or front at the same time.
Very well done Man meets Garage. There is nothing like sharing technical knowledge. Thanks again. Good video -- but how the heck did you get the inboard front nut off the lower control arm? I see the slot up from under where the aero panel was, but the access isn't straight? Did you use a flex head wrench??
Ive a 2014 P85 now 135,000 uk miles I think the problem is a lot of hard launches deform the rubber bushes as the upper control arm is the torque reaction point and only being RWD and 2.2 ton thats a lot of torque. AWD cars share the torque loads with the front wheels. My car rear wheel steers a bit with the accelerator.
Great video! Do you have any details on what happened on that corner? I see some over spray on the strut so it look like that corner was painted at some point in time.
Nice to see the young guys having a go was anything bent or were the bushes shot,if so. What was the mileage on the clock. P.s. Any torque values used would be useful. Keep up the good work
Gary Walker Thank You very much. Next time you have an issue with your do a little research and you'll find an abundant of information online. Don't be afraid to ask for help from friends or UA-cam. If any car questions you can message me anytime. 👍🏼
Geez did you fix it? What was bent. Where did you get the parts? Hate to think how much they cost!! Any idea how it happened. I would have loved to have seen the new arms next to the old ones.
How is pricing on Tesla parts compared to other american premium cars? Those parts looks extremely expenive with all that machining done to them. Also it looks that Tesla used steel bolts againts the aluminium, if they have I'm a bit concerned with corrosion because of the salting here in Norway.. Thanks for giving us such a detailed shot of the suspension!
Stainless steel is often used with aluminum. I'm not sure if that's what Tesla did, or which SS, but I would presume that would be the case, since I've never heard of corrosion being a problem with Model S.
I also own a 2013/2014 Tesla that I bought from a private garage. The owner got sick and died (not because he bought a Tesla) and it sat uncharged for a long time. And he never did a service. This caused a problem with the charging system, but I contacted Tesla and they fixed it under the warranty. Since I don't have your mechanical ability, I am relying on the and they are very nice in Bern. You said that there was no tire wear at all before? Did you notice a change in alignment after? I haven't finished watching the video. I want to buy a Nissan NV-200 EV for my company but the battery isn't enough. Can you help me with getting about 300 km range with a 720 kg payload? I talked with Tesla and they said they will give me some ideas, but they can't do the work. There are lots of people in my area of Switzerland that want to switch to EV but they need range.
Surprised that your p85 did not come with the air suspension. I thought all the model S performance came with it. It might have been a $2,500 option like a lot of Tesla’s stuff…
Oh. I was hoping you were going to take us through a more detailed process of extracting all the pieces and replacing them. And comparing the old and the new spindles. Oh well.
You said the alignment was ok ? With one half an inch setback?(that is the wheelbase from side to side)not possible on a newer 4 wheel alignment machine .
You may wish to be more upfront that you bought this car at auction. "Clint Eastwood" caught that this car had been rear-ended in an accident. I was smoking mad at first that Tesla was not fixing this problem. Other than that, I bet you saved a ton of both money and time doing this repair yourself.
1. Hoist. 2. Good cordless impact 1/2, 3/8, and a cordless 3/8 ratchet, Impact swivels. Your wrench experience will improve 1000% My knees killed watching this.
So what component(s) were bent or damaged??? Was it a bushing? - I can't imagine deflecting these massive elements. Must have been an accident. I don't like to work on suspensions. I have possibly the same Craftsman air compressor like yours. I use the air tools as much as I can, certainly during dis-assembly. Air ratchet, 3/8 inch butterfly impact wrench and even the 1/2 inch impact. Torquing during assembly is a pain but advisable.
I would not have gone on a test ride because the alignment was on a bent wheel. When you put in the straight part, you changed the alignment. I would have taken it to the alignment shop first, and then test drive...
Is it possible that this was a bushing issue that was bored of center and when installed caused a mechanical off set? It very unlikely that you would be able to deform or bend cast aluminum without it showing cracks.
ClayDayz lol sorry. Tires have been awesome and the wheels are perfect fit for the size of the model s. Expensive for a new set of tires. Great Cornering and no problem launching. Thanks
Must be nice you can do your own work on cars. I am no mechanic so I would of had to get it done by a professional mechanic. I know it is very costly for anything now days, but most people like me would have to take it in for repair somewhere, or live with the defect if it is not that bad. I only watched part of the video. Take care.
I've been thinking getting Tesla from auction. What's your experience telling you about it? My concern is if it's hard to get parts and did you have problems with any electronics (sensors, modules)? Since it's very different from typical cars
I am having trouble sourcing struts for a non-air suspension Model S. Do you have a lead on where to find replacement struts like the one featured in your video? Thanks!
+Chris Trigg I should have done one. When I was comparing off camera, very hard to see. Bushings we're fine. For sure it was either the spindle or the lower control arm.
okay... where did you get your parts on a take out basis from Tesla? what did those parts cost? .. Your car has obviously been curb slammed .. this happens when the car is pushed too hard into a corner and the back end washes out... seen several videos where this has happened... did you check that strut for cracks in the mounts? You obtained this vehicle 2nd hand from a TESLA retailer? where did you get the torque specs for all those bolts? are they available online? thanx..
bought real TESLA factory parts off ebay? .. they don't look salvaged.. are they knock offs? or are the employees in business hocking parts?? hmmm.. Auction purchase, no warranty, reason #1 buyer beware.. I wonder what other abuse that car took... Tesla wouldn't resell it off their lot... no wonder... thanx for the link... likely will be the 1st of many repairs on that Tes.. I bought the warranty coverage . happy motoring. .
Man this seems like a monster undertaking. Great job though! Curious to know why you didn't take it to Tesla for getting fixed? Was it because it was out of warranty or something or was it just because you like to fix cars? Thanks

What do you think about air suspension vs coil on the Teslas? Is it worth it?
Must be nice you can do your own work on cars. I am no mechanic so I would of had to get it done by a professional mechanic. I know it is very costly for anything now days, but most people like me would have to take it in for repair somewhere, or live with the defect if it is not that bad.
I only watched part of the video. Take care.
Do you think this could have been caused by hard launches?
awesome!! I wish I was mechanical inclined like you!!
Would be nice to know how much force was needed to make that distortion.
Hey great car looking ride man. When you did the chrome delete, did you wrap or plastidip the trims and moldings?
Thank you did plasti dip first then went to wrap.
@@ManMeetsGarage
How much did the wrap on the moldings cost? Did you have someone apply it? Or did you do it yourself?
@@vadimpanibratets962 bought a roll and did it myself
I've been thinking getting Tesla from auction.
What's your experience telling you about it?
My concern is if it's hard to get parts and did you have problems with any electronics (sensors, modules)?
Since it's very different from typical cars
I am having trouble sourcing struts for a non-air suspension Model S. Do you have a lead on where to find replacement struts like the one featured in your video? Thanks!
Why no final comparison of parts? Was the metal part bent? Or the inner bushing crushed?
+Chris Trigg I should have done one. When I was comparing off camera, very hard to see. Bushings we're fine. For sure it was either the spindle or the lower control arm.
hey man, there is good works!
Thank you very much
okay... where did you get your parts on a take out basis from Tesla? what did those parts cost? .. Your car has obviously been curb slammed .. this happens when the car is pushed too hard into a corner and the back end washes out... seen several videos where this has happened... did you check that strut for cracks in the mounts? You obtained this vehicle 2nd hand from a TESLA retailer? where did you get the torque specs for all those bolts? are they available online? thanx..
i purchased the parts on ebay. Vehicle was purchased at an auction. Torque specs are followed from boltdepot.com.
bought real TESLA factory parts off ebay? .. they don't look salvaged.. are they knock offs? or are the employees in business hocking parts?? hmmm.. Auction purchase, no warranty, reason #1 buyer beware.. I wonder what other abuse that car took... Tesla wouldn't resell it off their lot... no wonder... thanx for the link... likely will be the 1st of many repairs on that Tes.. I bought the warranty coverage . happy motoring. .
Well done dude... nice Job.
Thank you
I may have missed it but where did you get the replacement control arm?
+Jesse Allhands Purchased them from eBay. Southern California wrecking yard.
Man this seems like a monster undertaking. Great job though! Curious to know why you didn't take it to Tesla for getting fixed? Was it because it was out of warranty or something or was it just because you like to fix cars? Thanks
+Minds Eye Car was purchased at an auction so no warranty. Yes I do like to work on cars. Thanks
So was it a bush in the control arm or was it actually bent?
That wouldn't be covered under warranty?
I don’t think you need to remove everything just to replace the lower control arm. And I don’t think there is upper control in the rear.
Spotty quality control is a chronic Tesla problem
do you need to use computer to release the brake caliper and parking brake?
How old is it (from which month 2014) and how many miles on it? Did anything noticeable happen to the rear suspension before?
