The Stains of Time (Phnom-enal Mix)

- I'm a terrible person JUST for that title. Just for that.
I'd like to save the GRAD Mix for the mixing tutorial video, and I had a space of free time while I was at school, where I didn't have access to the computer I need to make the tutorial not have terrible jumpy video quality. So instead, I just made this mix, 'cause I figured I'd end up doing it eventually anyway.
For this one, I wanted to make the introduction atmospheric to the environment that the boss fight takes place in, similar to my Spirit of the Wolf mix from January. I also wanted to make it quieter, so that it sort of "rises" out of the background noise. Ideally, I wanted it to almost sound like a prayer- or edict-of-sorts, but the vocals were a little too loud for that, so I just let it play out normally, lol.
I added a little bit of rain and thunder, and then pretty much stuck to the standard formula for these mid-game boss tracks: instrumental, vocal bridge with refrain, and then Maniac Agenda/Platinum, in that order. It's basic, and there are a few small things I wouldn't mind changing. In particular, the Maniac Agenda track is kind of strange balance-wise between the vocals and instruments, but maybe that's just me. Either way, I'm satisfied with how this one played out.
"The Stains of Time" was composed by Jamie Christopherson, as a part of the OST for "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance". I claim no ownership of the Instrumental or the Maniac Agenda mixes, but I do claim responsibility for mixing these two together to create the final product that you're listening to.
Hope you enjoyed the mix! If I have some free time when I get home over the next couple of weekends, I'll work on getting that tutorial out for everyone; otherwise, I'll move on to Red Sun next. :)
The beggining really feels like
"MONSOON BREAKS INTO YOUR HOUSE SINGING STAINS OF TIME ASMR"
XDDD
The lyrics kick in the instant his picture shows up on video lmao
And that's why I love it...Makes me imagine Both Raiden And Monsoon standing there in the rain both staring at each other and at the end they both ready their weapons
Lmao I’d be scared asf if it was storming and suddenly I started hearing this in the distance at it gets closer and then he just comes bashing through the window😂

Nowdays, we're all like Monsoon.
Depressed and controlled by memes.
Edit : Stop liking this comment, I was trying to be edgy
Does Monsoon seem like a "we live in a society" typea guy? Or is it just me?
@@samgafford2371 He wasn't even entirely wrong with his speech. People teach each other hate, greed and all that. Especially in the current times this becomes really clear.
"A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that becomes a fad and spreads by means of imitation from person to person within a culture and often carries symbolic meaning representing a particular phenomenon or theme."
@@lolschrauber I'm just saying; he kinda sounds like a sane, slightly less murder-hobo Joker to me. You?
MEMES Jack
@@samgafford2371 Well he is mostly right in the things he says, though memetics aren't usually taken to the point of denying freedom of choice. You could technically say that since our personalities are the result of our experiences and things we've been exposed to all our "free" choices can be traced back to those experiences and are therefore, predetermined. However even if they are, it's not really productive to think about life like that. One thing it helps with is to counteract how easily we demonize people with disagree with or consider evil. We'd be just like them if we'd lived their lives.
Monsoon's views on this are twisted to sheer apathy and nihilism due to the horrible things he's experienced in Phnom Penh. Who cares what you do with your life? There is no supreme "free-will" or a divine destiny. Since all your choices are pretty much premade for you due to your experiences you should feel no remorse or guilt.
He's a bit "We live in a society" ish but he embraces it to a twisted extent rather than trying to poke holes in it to try and see it crumble.
If only these people knew "meme" is a legit scientific term used in psycology and that it refers to this very behavior they exhibit whenever they hear the word in an official work. Good grief, Monsoon was right, memes really did consume people.
How ironic. The term "meme" became a meme in and of itself.
@@rileymoore7025 It was never a matter of if, only when. (Internet culture is like those mantis infestations: swarm, consume, move on. Very few things are protected by obscurity enough to be spared from this...)
Every part of us that isn't primal is a meme, a composition of external influences comprising who we are. Comprising the superego. But just like the superego is not the self in isolation, the id is not the self either, and instead they work together to make up who we are.
As the internet consumes endlessly and cycles ideas into a cultural typhoon, is it a perversion of the superego, an incessant need to feed the identity of the self, that is motivated by the primal force of the id? Or is this just the logical evolution of how we form ourselves in this new age of communication?
I don't fucking know. I only think about these things because other people told me about them.
"Memetics" is a mostly discredited science, with many even labelling it pseudoscience. Most famously, trying to treat culture as if it worked like genetics is notoriously problematic because it's never been demonstrated that culture can actually act like or be transmitted like that. Don't act like it's "legitimate" science when it's dubious at best.
@@mythosinfinite6736 Nice way to argue that you're a powerless meat robot with no free will. Presuming that you can even say these things or muse on these things disproves your own claim.

I just realized that every boss in this game is an aspect of Raiden. Mistral grew up the same way as Raiden as a child soldier, Monsoon was Raiden when he lost control of his emotions and morals, Sundowner was Raiden if he went full on insane and fully embraced war, Sam was Raidens bloodlust, and Armstrong played a similar role to Solidus as a politician who wanted to fully free people
By the way, this is a song about Jack and his bloodlust, which will not disappear.
Khamsim or what ever his name is
Sam is a lot more like if Raiden lost his way and gives up on everything.
as the song, jack tried to go back to a peaceful life, but the "flood of pain" the realities of war, his existence as a cyborg is all that is left for him

You beautiful Shin Yakuza looking man!

took me 20 FUCKING MINUTES TO BEAT HIM *ON EASY*
Honestly I can't bring myself to hate Monsoon. The guy came out of nowhere without any buildup, had one five minute scene that he had to split with Sam and Jack awakening his "Ripper Mode", and is still one of the most memorable bosses in the game (IMO).
Monsoon was someone who grew up on the killing feilds, a civilian during a time of war. He was forced to join a crime syndicate for his own survival, not neccesarily becuase he wanted to. "Wash away the anger" "The warm and soothing rain" "Wash away the sorrow" "It's only dry inside" the lyrics represent Monsoon's sorrows and obvious regret he has for the horrendous crimes he had to commit. How he wishes to wash them away in the rain, to forget about them. it's why he doesnt beleive in any god, he thinks free will is a myth becuase he was forced to survive based on his surroundings, war in itself was a meme that forced him to do things he didn't want to. Monsoon is disillusioned, his dreams have disappeared. He lost his body in a gang shootout. Then yes, he was 'saved' by desperado, but is ultimately forever in debt to them, his body is owned by them, he believed that he could sink deeper "into a peaceful life" but in reality it's more of the same to him. His smile and crazed mania, as I see it, is just how he copes with his destructive downward spiral of a life.
@@Unknown550M Its a mix of what monsoon implies through his dailogue and the lyrics. but you may not know that there's info on monsoon in the codecs. Kevin will actually give some insight on monsoons past.
well this has been an unexpected "omg he's literally me" moment
@@eneskahraman9223 I always see people saying this and yet I've never seen any reason to believe that. Where did you hear it is about Raiden? This song fits much better as a song about Monsoon's past than it does with Raiden wanting to wash away the anger of Jack The Ripper. It does fit with both, it just fits significantly better with Monsoon in my opinion and would make a lot of sense in this particular game as it likes to point out the struggles of the villains or at least where they might be right. Mistral's song is about how she will forever remain a stranger, someone who came out of nowhere and involves herself in things only to disappear into yet another fight. Sundowner's song is about how much Sundowner enjoys fighting. Sundowner was a good student as a kid and began fighting when he lacked the money necessary to go to college. Sundowner grew to enjoy killing and Red Sun reflects how brutal he can be. Sundowner's song is indeed just about how much he enjoys fighting, however if you listen to it knowing his story it seems a lot deeper than that. Sam's song is about how Sam struggles with not really knowing who he is, Sam is someone who was like Raiden and ended up indebted to the people he wanted to destroy. Sam doesn't know who he really is anymore and for the very last time in his life while he's fighting Raiden he finally sees hope for the mission he had failed to complete to finally be accomplished and it grants him one last bit of happiness as he dies, knowing Raiden may be able to finish what he had started. The theme for Metal Gear Excelsus is about how big bad the villain is but it is meant to be deceiving. If you listen to Collective Consciousness it is pretty much the exact opposite of what Armstrong really believes. Collective Consciousness is meant to be about what Raiden thinks he is up against when in reality it's a lot less black and white than that. Armstrong's song is about how despite both Raiden and Armstrong truly being able to understand each others motivations and ideals they still have to fight. Throughout the fight Raiden begins to believe what Armstrong is telling him and you can see this after Armstrong is dead. Raiden stands over Armstrong's body in complete silence and doesn't interrupt Armstrong as he tells Raiden that he is his successor. Raiden doesn't know what's right anymore and he's beginning to think that Armstrong may be correct about quite a few things. In the end Raiden decides that despite Armstrong's mistakes, Armstrong was right. Raiden begins to fight for the very same ideals that belonged to the person he had fought so hard to destroy. Among all of these songs the reflect how the character has been burned in the past which at least somehow explains their actions and could even make them correct in some ways, why would Monsoon's song that fits so well with his struggles and Metal Gear rise to where he is now (get it?) why would they make the song about Jack The Ripper? If you do have a source then please give it to me I am legitimately interested.

Monsoon is by far the most powerful boss in Metal Gear Rising and ill prove it. When you activate blade mode stuff goes slow, when ripper mode is activated and then (while ripper mode is still activated) you use blade mode you’ll use a special blade mode thats far slower time wise then regular (you can test this on ninja cat). His telekinesis(or whatever) is throwing several ton vehicles at mach 5. Not to mention his personal speed. Bosses like mistral will jump away from you, monsoon can jump away the fastest out of all the bosses while in ripper blade mode, this is to an insane degree. Not to mention his health, monsoon fights you in permanent ripper blade mode meaning your attacks deal double damage, that rivals even Armstrong’s health! Although if you account for the pattern of song’s being about bosses and the last song, it has to be this way being about raiden, then technically raiden is the strongest boss. I remember not parrying through out the whole game because i totally forgot about it until I reached this fight and got stuck on it. I got owned so many times. Then i remembered about parrying and tried it out. And I totally slaughtered him. Also awesome mix man. Keep up the good work.
Likewise, but also didnt know about items.. healing etc..
Then this guy totaled me twice and then i looked up the item thing. :

the most frustrating part for me was seeing people fight him and not think to use the EMG's they were being given...
I know, right? I mean, I understand blatantly ignoring them for challenges, but on a casual playthrough, it's like...there's no excuse, y'know?

I agree, it felt more in-character for Ripper Raiden since, obviously, he prefers the RIP AND TEAR tactic.

Personally I just never used the grenades because I suck with using the analog sticks diagonally on blade mode. :P
CreditR01
lol you have not been video gaming often; making you have difficulties cutting with the analog stick
Seriously though, I get it why it can be difficult to many, it's something that's recently introduced in gaming (or was it older before MGR?) and will take some getting used to. Sometimes, certain games requires dexterity and MGR, like many Metal Gear game, counts.
We are controlled by something greater than us....
Memes.
There are over 9000 of them!!
The DNA of the soul!
The Memes
They shape our will. They are the culture, they are everything we pass on. Expose someone to anger long enough, they will learn to hate. They become a carrier. Envy, greed, despair... All memes. All passed along.
Wash away the anger!
Here I stand beneath the warm and soothing rain,
The droplets falling gently down on the terrain.
Wash away the sorrow, all the stains of time,
But there's no memory, it's only dry inside.
In the mud it's sinking deeper
Into a peaceful life.
And it will go like a flood of pain
Pouring down on me.
And you will not let up until the end is here.
And it will go through the darkest day,
In the final hour.
And you will never rest until the clouds are clear
Until it finds my dreams that dissappear.

Imagine if the whole fight was done like 0:00 - 1:18; no music, just the vocals and the sound of rain and thunder.
search "the stains of time no lyrics" the in a new window search "rainy move"
ShadowKiller1O I do not know how to edit comments but I meant to say "rainy mood"
ShadowKiller1O Oh, okay. But I'm actually talking about it being just the lyrics playing without the background music.
Also, to edit a comment, click 'Reply,' and there will be three options; 'Edit' will be one of them.
TY, BTW!

Monsoon and Armstrong: Achieved legendary character status, even though they came out of nowhere and only were present in the game for a short while.
Storm strikes, rain fall, wind blows. But there will always be a stain of time.
perfect song to study LORENTZ'S FORCE

"Turn off my MEME inhibitors!"
That vocoder at the beginning gives me chills, man...
I think it's time for Jack.... TO LET 'ER RIP!!
If you guys don't know why he's saying "kill or be killed jack, phnom peng taught me that" It's because monsoon is living in the 1975-1979 which is the cambodian massacre
When I first listened to this song a (no joke) monsoon came into my town
No matter how many other mixes I listen to, none have ever topped this. The beginning is just too damn legendary to top!
It’s like a scenario, Moonson under the rain… absolutely perfect
The drummer for all of these tracks really went absolutely nuts for this theme and It Has to Be This Way!
I feel this song fit the mood Raiden was in at this point of the game. He had been trying to suppress the demon inside for years, but has failed. Maybe monsoon was wrong. Maybe there was a more benevolent side to Raiden, but raiden snapped, and now the only thing to do is kill... Kill anyone standing in your way.
Nah m8
Raiden does have a benevolent side, why do you think he's after World Marshal?
This makes me wanna gun it down a busy highway in the middle of a category 6 hurricane
first 1:30 minutes is Monsoon just rehearsing his theme before jumping down the rooftop.
All day today, Hurricane Fiona passed over southern Puerto Rico leaving catastrophic rain, and im here without power listening to this.

The game came out in 2013, but the memes live on. A true classic.
This comment aged really well
I noticed during the fight i got rocked by two huge orbs in the mass of salami limbs. I realized it was monsoons massive nuts. One of the only ones in canon to look at ripper mode and meet it head on with a smile.
Stains of Time is easily the boss theme I've ever heard aside from certain final boss themes. Very few, mind you.
It's out of place among most boss songs, since the lyrics tie in with the personality or goals of the boss. Sam's theme "The Only Thing I Know For Real" depicts this attribute of the boss themes better than any other, Armstrong in a close second.
The lyrics of "Stains of Time" doesn't describe Monsoon at all, really.
Rather, it's the theme of "Jack the Ripper" more than it is Monsoon.
I know I'm probably an idiot for not realising this until now.
I just think it's clever.
The Fantom Convoy👑🏆 What about Blade Wolf?
Don't get me wrong, I like Blade Wolf and his theme, but it's just not my favorite.
The Fantom Convoy👑🏆 Ah, my mistake. It's just that I like Blade Wolf's character, but his boss fight and boss theme are strangely forgettable to me. Maybe just because it's so early in the game.
I suppose you're right about I'm My Own Master Now having coinciding lyrics.
I like Stains of Time most cause it could kinda work for Monsoon as well as Jack the Ripper.
Red Sun's pretty awesome, too.
+Aidan Keogh Huh. Never thought about it that way. Interesting theory and point!
+Aidan Keogh All the character songs describe the character itself.
"And it will come like a flood of PAIN pouring down on me."
Refers to Monsoon getting riddled with bullets by the Khmer Rouge
+Aidan Keogh Stain of time describes the fight between Jack the ripper and Monsoon

A Meme is like a "Idea" or a "believe" that is passed along by people.
If its a "Bad" or "Good" thing is up to each person to decide.

Dude, whoever you are, you earned yourself a subscriber. This is amazing!
Thanks, man! :)
No worries, I spent a few hours just listening to these SWEET remixes. This one's my favourite, because, c'mon. Stains of Time > Everything
imagine a schizophrenic person defending their home with a shotgun in hand, awaiting monsoon to come and kill them, and then the beginning of the song plays.
Heavy violently congaing to the point where he A-poses instead
Wow the ending part was the intro at the beggining? Pretty epic : D
Yep, I used the vocals and a bit of the guitar solo from the end at the beginning of the song. And thanks! :)
This is incredibly well done, but there are a few opportunities in the beginning I would've taken. The original version's impact at 'and it will come, like a flood of rain' would've been very nice, but using it at the end of the vocal sequence like you did was very nice, as well.
If you haven't figured out parrying by this point, you're gonna have to wash away the anger quite a few times.
For real, this fight was such a pain in ass, I barely control myself from deleting the game
I can hear the back to back parries.
