What I'm realizing listening to this is that unless you know the due diligence that was done to pick these winners, this whole video just views like a company listing off their random pics for each segment for the year. So many cars on this list that have reliability issues or are so new to the market that there may not have even been a hundred of them sold yet. This just sounds like a marketing heads-up list more than anything
Exactly! Actual car people know that this list of car is not good from and ownership perspective. Prius isn’t too bad but how many recalls have Ford put out on the F-150 Lightning? Owning anything from Hyundai/Kia is going to be a journey to say the least.
I agree, especially when they kicked off the best car for 2024 as the new Prius...seems like they're following fun trends (e.g., EVs being more prominent in conversations) more than actually defining "best" [vehicle].

You picked the Lightning last year as your top pick and this year, it is dead. They slowed production, can't sell what's made and are losing a ton of money. So the EV9 will suffer that fate this time next year.
Top rated awards. Small group of internal journalists shortlist. They had to justify several times how they rated the vehicules - eventually unequally. Take that list with a grain of salt. More a marketing stunt than anything else.
Having the 66k+ i5 as the top electric car (actually 84k+ for the m60i5 awd for ~50% of the world who actually experience winter driving) when there are so many cheaper options is certainly a choice.
I mean, the ioniq 6 (among others) charges faster and has more range for half the price? Doing the two things that are arguably most important to EV owners better than the i5. Maybe make seperate sections for "luxury" in the future if you wanna felatte gaudy, self-important money pits :)
It’s because their infotainment systems suck ass. My dad has a 2019 sierra and the CarPlay almost never worked and was always glitchy as shit. Sometimes the screen would just randomly push buttons for you and call random people in your contacts
Edmunds was my GO TO back in the 90’s and that’s where it belongs. Back in the 90’s. We don’t all live in California for perfect performing EV vehicles. Many of these cars are way to expensive even the KIA EV9 $80K, BMW I5, even at the high price they will leave you stranded in Sub Zero weather and don’t get me started on Battery Repair costs if you run over something that was in the road.
Whoever comes here to listen to Edmunds on their top picks have no brian of their own .. Cause how are you rating a Kia EV9 when that vehicle hasn’t even been on the market for a month .. Plus most of these vehicles are top trims that most dealers dont have available
My fiancee has the Sportage Hybrid in the exact color. It's a great SUV, however, it doesn't get close to it's claimed MPG. The awd is rated at 38/38. We have never seen over 35, and on long road trips, it's been as low as 30mpg. There needs to be a lawsuit over this as many online have complained of the same issue.
That exact scenario is happening to many. If it doesn't get the mileage, why bother with the added tech and complexity? You might not remember, but Hyundai has a history of overstating fuel economy, and as such, has had to pay their customers in one way or another.

For me it came down to the Taco or Colorado. I went with the Colorado ZR2 without a second thought. THOROUGHLY impressed with the look, fit/finish and performance both on and off road.
Raters have been gushing about the prius for years, but now you say it has really improved. Which means someone has been dishonest about the prius and for only one reason, because it was a hybrid and only because of that.
They love trying to convince us that electric is the way to go when sales say different. Last year Edmunds said best vehicle was ford lighting and now ford is shutting down the lighting plant because no one’s buying them
Two and Three rows competing is an interesting dynamic. Congratulations to KIA for delivering. I personally don’t need or want a third row so the IONIQ 5 AWD Limited edges out the IONIQ 6 in space practicality and looks. A few road trips a year makes me desire a cosmetically overhauled RWD IONIQ 6 for another choice of rapid charging EV’s in a moderate price point.🤔
lol Chevy Colorado. Don't listen to anything these people are saying in this review. It's so scripted it feels like they're reading off cue cards. This entire video consists of new cars they happen to like, while completely ignoring past model reliability. That being said, I'd like to know how much GM paid Edmunds to say they legitimately preferred the Chevy Colorado over the Tacoma. It's a nice looking truck, sure. But it'll fall apart in 3 years.

Look at international reviews of BMW's new electric 5, and you'll see that it's not great. Way overstated range, cheaper interior materials than the outgoing model, etc. More than 25% of electric vehicle owners would not buy one again. At the rental car companies, they are now the inexpensive option. I'll keep my fuel efficient ICE car as long as possible.
For EVs, I can’t imagine anything better than offerings from Hyundai/Kia for performance, design, and fast charging. Tesla is an alternative only because of their supercharging network, but Tesla has significant build quality issues, expensive repair that can only be done by Tesla, and piss poor winter battery performance. I’m waiting for the Ioniq 5N.

Subjective at best. Paid advertising to promote these vehicles at worst. These results are shallow, showy, and meaningless. Consumers Reports does more real world analysis and testing.
I think it's sad to listen to them talk like we all are made of money and want everything on a vehicle so I can go broke to drive. What about not having a tech heavy vehicle that is simple, efficient and inexpensive? Oh, wait the car manufactures won't give you kickbacks if you talk outside of what they have for sale. I think you guys are out of touch with a lot of folks who don't need tech or want to spend their whole paycheck to drive.
Agreed! The car market is focused on a small margin of buyers. Most of us will have to wait 5 years or more to even hope to afford some of these options, and by then the shininess will wear off and reliability will become a serious consideration.
A recent Consumer Reports video chose the Honda Hybrid new cars and SUVs for how they drive. I like the Mazda steering feel a lot, for price and reliability especially used with about 10 to 50 thousand miles. See the Carsthatlast videos for older vehicle reliabilty, and try to get one well maintained by the previous owners.
It's hard to imagine that you guys have used the electric F150 the way most guys actually would. Those who have tried to use one to do truck things like going camping or hunting, etcetera, have found that the truck does not even come close to going the distance. Have you tried to tow anything with it? I bet not. You can't even go 100 miles towing a load with it. What a joke... get real, I can't take your evaluation seriously at all. It's seems you only took it down town to get coffee. The F150 Lightening is a joke. Even the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, said he was disappointed in the truck.
The F150 Lightning's range is such a disaster, Ford's own president acknowledged the Lightning has significant range issues. Ford said less than a week ago they're scaling back production due to waning demand. You cannot tow with it. You can't use it in freezing weather. Hoovie proved this in his tests. This is a $92,000 truck that's unusable. Most UA-cam car reviewers hated living with it. Stop misleading people.
Prius as number#1, no contest here. Sorry, but the Kia Sportage is one ugly car. Sure the BMW i5 looks and drives great, but at about $70k, there are better, more affordable options (Tesla, Mercedes EQE, Volkswagen ID7, etc.).

They’re looking at different things. Also, CR is pretty weird with their hot takes these days imo. CR can definitely be slow to accept new changes, because they wait to see if the bugs can be worked out and how the vehicles do in consumers’ real world scenarios. Whereas Edmunds is hungry for new, even at the cost sometimes to reliability and availability. CR is asking, “what would the average owner actually use long term?” And Edmunds is saying, “what’s the coolest thing available today?” The average American isn’t going to go out and risk buying the coolest thing out there if they want to keep an affordable vehicle for 5 or 10 years. That’s why Toyotas and F-150s have been so popular. All that said, the perfect car for each person may lie somewhere in between what these two companies say. In my experience.
Kia has not convinced me that they know how to make a quality vehicle. Unlike Toyota, I hardly see any older ones on the road. Also, in the past their engine reliability have been terrible.@@middler5212

Price should be a consideration. Even though everything is over priced, especially in Canada.
Apparently, Edmunds did not take into consideration overall reliability. "Bright and Shiny" seems to be the criteria.

That is why we went with the Toyota Venza. We're averaging 41.1 mpg after 2 years...better than it's EPA numbers.

The BMW i5 is the sweet spot for luxury electric sedan! Only cars look better are Audi etron GT and Porsche Tycan but they are way more expensive.

Most of the automotive publications like the Colorado over the Tacoma. Motortrend and Car & Driver have reached the same conclusion.
Also, duh they are scripted- they wrote the reviews for their magazine and website then adapted it into video format.

Ride quality of a upper trim Prius isn't good. The cockpit layout was a mistake. Cargo area reduction. Low roof height.
