My personal recommendation (knowing that there are many closed-minded and haters) is that you listen to bands that appear or have appeared more in the mainstream (like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, KoRn, Saliva, P.O.D, Sevendust, Hed p.e, Otep, Papa Roach, Coal Chamber, System of a Down, etc.), so that you can enter to a lesser extent and get used to it and not so suddenly. Slipknot is a good choice (there you have Mudvayne or Mushroomhead), but know that from my point of view, you have to listen with "criteria", understand the context of the group at the time they released the music that you are getting to know TODAY. Trying to see the history of the group itself, in addition to the music ... there are interesting things. I know it sounds very "complex" even though your intention is probably not even that, but I assure you that you will open the viewer a lot if you explore new styles and sounds that you were completely unaware of before, rhythmically, aesthetically and lyrically. If you are related to the rap of the nineties, such as Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill (which even have songs where they merge with Nu Metal, very characteristic of the time), Artifacts, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Onyx, Wu Tang Clan, it is likely that you can also find more similarities and influences between both styles.
