How is your experience with the a7iv? Any issues so far?
A lot people in Europe have problem with overheating. My a7iv from rental after 60 min recording 4k to v90 turn off. In option was set to HIGH. Next time with no recording only jumping and learn menu turn off after 50 min. All test in normal room temperature.
I've just done my first recording test with the A74. It overheated after just 9 minutes of recording indoors (UK). My Auto Power Off Temp was set to high, and I was shooting 4k 25p XAVCS 10 Bit 422.

I use A74 for 2 full day wedding projects, i set my auto turn off power to high and open my lcd to side. I face no problem with its performance or any overheating issues. It's make my work very easy and now I have full confidence about it.

does the camera have any overheating issues when filming in 1080p?

Thanks for this video! Super helpful :) I did a test with my A7 IV - shot 4K 25p and 4K 50p and both times the camera ran all the way through, but I was in a pretty cool room so I’ve been worried about taking it out to Botswana where it gets extremely hot.
Just rented the A74 in Singapore on a hot day, and filmed in 4k alongside the A73. The A74 kept overheating, and the A73 had no problems.
How long did it take to overheat?

Thank you for this. I live in Bangkok and was concerned about reports of this camera overheating, and not helped much by people testing in in Canada! Which part of Thailand are in? Obviously it's the cool season now. The real test would be to take it to Kanchanaburi during the hot season. Yikes!
Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of.
In the meantime, this was their advice:
1. Change the auto power off temperature setting from “standard” to “high.” This is one we already know.
2. Turn on airplane mode so that it’s not drawing power constantly attempting to search for devices to pair with BT and NFC.
3. Turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting.
4. Turn off proxy recording.
5. Turn off focus breathing compensation.
Other tips I’ve seen around include:
1. Keeping the screen flipped out and away from the body (which we know, also not always ideal depending on your situation).
2. Leaving the battery door open (which we know, but may not be ideal).
3. Attach a lens on the camera instead of the body cap (heat can dissipate through the lens better than through the body cap).
4. Don’t cradle the entire body of the camera in your hands for a significant period of time going through the menus and setting up the camera.
5. Don’t play with it in bed (or any other location where it may be “suffocating” on a blanket, on a pillow, etc., just like you wouldn’t with a laptop).
6. Do not have the camera in video capture mode while going through your settings, as the sensor is currently programmed to pull power at all times in movie mode, creating heat.
If you have the body cap on, are cradling it fully with both of your hands coming into contact and covering most of the camera body, sitting in bed resting the camera in your hands on the blanket that’s on your lap, and you’re in video mode; it will probably overheat. Lol
However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.”
And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this.
So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!
That sounds great, thanks for the update and for the suggestions to improve it. I think in most realistic situations it will be fine, especially with wifi etc, off. But they should definitely fix it in the menus.

There are two Somy cameras in my home, an A6000 and the A7IV. I have yet to see issues with either, but I haven’t used the A7IV yet (turned it on to play with settings quickly a couple of times). So… hopefully, they’re not just blowing smoke up my ass 🤣.

Used my new Sony A7 IV today in a indoor domestic set. Ambient temperature 19/20° after 40 minutes without recording only using the camera to setting up the lights, the camera turned off for overheating issue. Then after 15/20 minutes the camera still continue to turning off but the camera were not hot. So I guess is a software issue. I'm in touch with the Sony europe service.
Same here I’m just setting up my camera not even shooting and it gave me over heating sign
Pull the screen out and use it at the side will stop that, and wen you are not using the Bluetooth turn it off I find, test and see if that works

Im in India and shooting outdoor weddings. In daylight my a7iv is also overheating and shutting down in about 25 minutes. It is not possible to use this camera for paid work that is outdoors.

Yeah, I pre-ordered it at Big Camera here. Idk anything about the quality control as I've never been to the factory haha. But Sony is solid, so I expect that they have everything in place here.
i want to buy the a7iv.. im a wedding videographer... but in summer the temperature in my city is around 35/40° celsius, or more... im a bit worried for the overheating :(
Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much
Yes, that setup will be perfectly fine. None of my lenses is stabilized and I shoot most of my footage handheld. Especially active stabilization helps and for really difficult shots you can turn stabilization off and use Catalyst Browse Gyro stabilization, what is gimbal like.
@@pascalbasel Thanks so much for your suggestions. Last question please. I don't take pics I only make 4K shoots (video). Could you tell me if with active stabilization slightly decreases the image video quality? Is there a slight crop with active stabilization? Repeat: I soot only 4K videos.
If you were shooting in 60P 4K you might get 20 minutes Max, were you shooting to dual cards?
Hi Pascal. I'm choosing between Sony A7IV and A7SIII now. But I still can't find 1080p video footage of A7IV to decide.
And as you have both cameras it would be great if you could provide 15-sec video samples comparing 4k 24 fps 10 bit, 1080p 24, 60, 120 fps 10 bit. Let me know if it's possible. I've already asked several UA-camrs and people who bought it but for some reason, they don't want to do that. I've already seen a comparison between A7SIII and A7III and A7SIII 1080p is legit, but A7III soft, so I believe A7IV is about the same however as it has 10-bit color maybe it will work. And you know how it's hard to compare taking into account youtube compression. Possible to share Google folder link? Also, does A7SIII has better colors or it's the same as A7IV?
I think barely anyone that gets one of those cameras is interested in 1080P. So it's not really worth for people like me to test that. I think it was mentioned in a review somewhere that the a7iv 1080P is not as good but didn't test it by myself. The colors are 99% the same. Same color science with the normal variations from camera to camera.

@@pascalbasel A lot of people still want to record in 1080. What FF camera would you suggest that records 1080 that has IBIS and at least 30MP?
@@emcon4927 Sony has r3 r4 but their 1080p is average because they are not oversampling or downsampling which is the right word. but it just require too much process power to do it. I think as photo and video hybird camera, 24mp is still the sweet spot.
4k 30fps at 10bit camera overheats for me within 50min and that's in cloudy UK...

I do sports videography. Lots of summer heat. I am nervous about purchasing the Sony A7 iv even though the quality is what I’m looking for.
With the overheating, is it easier to just ditch some quality and go for the a7iii?
I wouldn't go for the a7iii. It's too far behind. But I personally didn't have any issues with overheating during my normal shoots here in Thailand. So you will most likely be fine.

I wish you will show us more tests with the a7IV! What do you think about the 4K60p crop and poor rolling shutter, which made me hesitate switching to Sony?
Yes, will do. 4K60 crop is not really an issue. Slow motion and tighter shots are both there to emphasize certain shots anyway and I can use another lens if I need a wide shot. The rolling shutter could be better but it’s not as bad as on the zv-e10 for example. I cn live with it. Also have the a7Siii, so I can always use that for fast pans etc. I think for most creators the a7iv is perfect.
@@pascalbasel The rolling shutter issue is a weird one, the fact it’s there and it’s not improved over A7iii is a pain in the ass but for me I can’t remember the last time I panned quick enough for it to be a problem? I know everybody’s use case may be different but I bet for a lot of people it’s never even going to be an issue? I think the crop is more annoying but again like you say if you know it’s there you can work around it and also use it for improved rolling shutter. I think it’s a great camera, just has a lot more competition now.
4K 60 is the best setting for low rolling shutter
Well, in the end I decided to invest a bit more and bought a7SIII. It is fantastic!

Hi, I recently bought the Sony A74 too, but I am not able to edit the photos in Lightroom, I would like to know if you are having this problem too.
Just wait for updates. The software doesn’t support the raw format yet. That’s normal with new camera releases. I tried Luminar AI tough and there it works.
Alternatively, shoot in HEIF 10bit format. It’s not raw but edits very well too.
Lightroom supports Sony A74 HEIF, now?
@@NUK3NBF3 HEIF is not camera specific as it's not raw. So every app that supports HEIF should support a7ic HEIF files.
How do Sony cameras handle extreme weather conditions? I have yet to find a single video on UA-cam, of anyone using a Sony camera in pouring rain, extreme cold or extreme humidity. The impression I got so far from trying to research Sony cameras build quality and weather sealing is that either Sony users are afraid to use their cameras in extreme weather or the Sony cameras can't handle rain and humidity well... I'm asking because I shoot WRC/FIA and other Rally events all over Europe, Asia and Americas, with sometimes having to stay in the rain, walking around the track/stage for the entire day - and I would like to switch to Sony but I just can't find any solid proof that Sony cameras can indeed candle extreme weather - which I'm mostly interested about how they are in rain, more specifically heavy rain. If anyone here owns an a7iv, a7Riv, a9ll or a1 and you have shot in extreme weather, please reply! Thanks in advance!
Do you know if A7IV 10 bit 4:2:2 works on free Davinci and trial Final Cut Pro without transcoding? If not, does 8 bit 4:2:2 work?
Can't talk about Final Cut Pro, but the free version of Davinci doesn't support 10 bit 4:2:2 (only the $299 Studio version). 8 bit 4:2:0 works great with Davinci and 8 bit 4:2:2 isn't an option on the A7IV.
I can use these files with both apps without any issues. It depends on your Mac tough. Best to get an M1.
Amazing because some are telling about issues with overheating and others don't have that problem at all. Either there are strong differences in quality from unit to unit or it might be a european union problem. Dji action 2 for example is for europeans a pain in the ass because you can not set the temperture to high. It's weird. A friend of mine wants to travel to india for a long time and now he is very unsettled. Strange
To me it looks like that all people that complain leave the Overheating setting to standard instead of setting it to high. Also saw a German UA-camr two days ago who didn’t change this setting and was complaining. I think Sony confuses people with that as many people think setting it to high could cause problems except for a warmer grip.
Bought mine in canada, I was holding the camera in my hands looking at the menu inside the house on the couch at a 22c ambiant temp, and I saw the over heating icon twice... I changed the setting to high, then went to my a7III to realise I have never changed the setting for overheating and never saw this icon.... I mean simply holding the camera is that much ?
can you change it from PAL TO NTSC ?

Just got mine few days ago, the weird thing for me is, it overheated after about 25 mins without recording when i set it to 4k 24p 10 bit 422 mode. So its like 25 mins menu browsing plus preview made it too hot. Did i just win the lottery, should i return it?

I have an a7siii and also am thinking of the a7iv as b cam, do you know if the cinetone profiles on each camera match? There is no cinetone on a6400 using as b right now.
I didn’t test it personally but SLOG3 seems to be a 99% match. So I expect the same for S-Cinetone. Should only be minor adjustments if any.

In the sun 30mins, shade no shut down after 120mins and indoor (hot) 24mins. I'm from Germany.
