  • The Sony A7iv overheats and that's ok here's why! It's an amazing camera with great features, it has to downscale from 7k to 4k no one needs to record 4k 60p for over a few minutes. If you do, the camera will start heating up. If this is an issue then this may not be the camera for you.

    I honestly feel like this is a none issue BUT I understand why people would be concerned. At the end of the day we have to decide that is most important. Portibility, price, image resolution OR durability, reliability, and consistency. Not to say the Sony A7IV does not have a lot of these qualities but it's important to understand what is most important to you. What are you thoughts and please let's be kind!

      Just a heads up Tristan, wanna know why many people are apparently freaked out at the overheating issue? Well, after some lurking around, it seems a lot of these dummies are plugging in their A7IV with the USB-C Power cable...while in use... and then wondering why it heats up... *facepalm*...

      I live in a hot climate in a 3rd world country so it is a lot of money to spend for something that fails during paid video work. But my last camera the GH5 is still with me and always reliable and never fails so now I will try to sell the a7iv and return to Panasonic to the S5ii that was just announced.

    My Sony a7 IV has overheated *twice* while on sets with clients. I am going to actually insist on a refund from B&H and likely seek another camera alternative. In both instances, I was not even in 60fps! I was shooting in 4K, 23.98, screen swiveled out, and ‘Power Off set to High.’ In each instance, it overheated within 20 minutes of rolling! Ugh.
    Luckily, I had my trusty Fujifilm X-T4 on set as a backup which got me through. Later, I did send the Sony video to my Atomos Ninja and that solved the rest of the day’s shooting. I agree the camera is awesome. But I don’t want a camera that is not trustworthy when my job depends on it. That’s my two cents. Thanks !

    Switch to V90 SD. Ok, guys, I'm posting that comment under every video related to Sony A7IV overheating issue, because it solved the problem for me and I'd be happy if it helps you. I've browsed through dozens of videos on that subject and most of them didn't mention that particular thing.
    Yes, auto power off temp works. Opening the screen and battery door works too. Eventually it allowed me to record 35 min instead of 15 min in 4K 100M 4:2:2. Better, but not perfect. External recorder, switched off linking, battery grip, etc. probably does its job as well.
    But V90 SD card instead of V30 allowed me to record a 2-hour take easily. The battery exhausted earlier.
    Maybe that's dumb, but having been an A7III user, I never thought the card would be such a gamechanger. In fact, yes. Slow cards just don't have enough capacity, being overheated while trying to process the recording, they overheat the camera internally even though it stays cool on the surface.
    Don't bother with CFExpress, just a regular V90 128G card would do the thing. At least it worked like a charm for me. Thanks for the video, Tristan! 🙌

    • @Evengard
      @Evengard Рік тому +1

      @@adam_jumps I'm glad you find it helpful. Haven't tried CF, but suppose it wouldn't make much difference. The problem with weaker cards is that they overheat themselves. If v90 is cold enough - the problem's solved. But let us know if you try it. My videos are a bit of a different genre, maybe Tristan will consider doing such an upload :)

    Great video!, very informative, I've had my A7iv for about two months now, and I Love! this camera. Yes it overheats a little, but I turned off the options you mentioned, and some other ones that I don't need and use, and it helped. I don't do video much, so I don't care about the 4k 60p crop thing, the standard settings are fine for me. It may be my imagination, but I did the 1.01 update, and it seems to overheat a little less now. What I love about this camera is that it's like the A1's mini me, or an A7iii on steroids, which = Awesome!. Have a great day!, Peace!

    I've had my A7iv for about three weeks now. As a filmmaker, I typically shoot for 5 to 10 seconds per take. Although, at the moment, I am shooting gear review videos for my channel where I film for about 1 to 2 minutes per take. So far, I haven't experienced any overheating. If and when I do, I am sure it will be when I shoot for several minutes at a time. Which in most cases for me, is rare. I've been told that if my A7iv overheats, to open the battery door, flip out the monitor and let it sit. Apparently, it cools off pretty fast. In the end, overheating is not an issue for me because I will not come across it too often based on my uses.
    Bottom line, I love my A7iv. It's one of the few cameras I've ever had where I don't foresee myself selling it. Ever. It ticks all the boxes that I care about. The 4K 10-bit 422 recording ability. The 7K image down sampled to 4K is an amazing image to behold. I've shot at 3200 ISO at night, and the results were fantastic. So, I'm good to go. A7iv for the win.

My biggest worry is that i am expanding my services to the Middle east where its absolutely boiling hot. Will this be a big issue?

    AV expert here. If you're me, you want to shoot 4K60 to record 4K60 content. PS5 & XBSX being the immediate thought. If you have to buy a $599 external recorder...you could've bought a cheaper camera. Also, if you're on set shooting multiple slomo chapters, you'll burnout fast. Overheating is bs. Sony shouldn't advertise features if they can deliver them properly. They chose to go up to 7K..6K was already ridiculous. My point is, there are multiple types of creators. You need to think outside of the box. Water is wet, and overstatements are just that.

      Hey Q Thanks for your thoughts. It's interesting...in a world where we have multiple cameras that shoot in high frame rates (60, 120, 180) for hours on end we desire every camera to function in the same way. I own cinema cameras and I own consumer cameras. The A7IV is not a pro camera my friend. At best, it's an entry level prosumer product that is geared not to "AV experts" like yourself but to people on the come up. Spoiler alert, they don't shoot like you...lol they don't need 60p for everything. Side note: if you are shooting PS5 and XBOX 60p footage could you not just buy a $200 screen capture device 🤷🏾‍♂️? I'm asking for a friend since you're the expert here. All joking aside this is a hybrid camera which means it's geared towards everything a "Jack of all trades master of..." you know? If you are a specialist then pay the price and buy the specialized gear like I have with my cinema cameras. It's a pretty easy fix to me. Oh and the whole box thing is a little funny considering I am focusing on all the amazing things this camera can do and other can't get over not being able to shoot 60p for 8 hours...all the best my friend and stay creative.

      Tristan, I'm simply telling you that there are many types of creators. You cannot make statements from a position of misunderstanding, then get mad when its explained to you..without looking a bit silly. I'm not an "av expert" lol, I'm legitimately an AV Expert working with internationally recognized brands, most notably Hisene. I present scientific research to their R&D, and try to make things better for all consumers with brutally honest news. A proper camera is important in that work. I'll also let you know, I'm also a pro photographer, videographer, and dabble in colorist work. So many types of commercial projects use 4K60, as not every presentation style is geared towards 4K30 lol..hello slow-mo...without crop from focus breathing comp, and 4K60. Sony has a nasty habit of overpromising and under delivering. The G master lenses are a perfect example. Tamron and sigma easily match my G master quality for less. Point being, you've got to think beyond you usage when educating people. Good luck, and hopefully you take my advice.

      And a side note, youtubers don't need film cameras for highly compressed content. They can easily buy a GH series camera and get real 4K60. Stop focusing on positive things exclusive, and give the full picture. You'll go alot further with real people. All the best friend. And stay creative. 👍

    I got my A7 IV today. Facing the overheating issue while navigating with Menus and setting up its settings just after 10-12 mins. Also camera automatically tuned-off twice. (with warning once and no warning on second time). I do feel it hot near the mount towards left side of the body. In fact I even shoot a single video on it till now. As far as room temp goes, it sets to 70-73 F. Winter is running here in East USA and outside temp is not more than 68F till today. So not sure why simple menu navigation causing the overheating issue.

  • @MichelleUretsky
    @MichelleUretsky 2 роки тому +6

    Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of.
    In the meantime, this was their advice:
    1. Change the auto power off temperature setting from “standard” to “high.” This is one we already know.
    2. Turn on airplane mode so that it’s not drawing power constantly attempting to search for devices to pair with BT and NFC.
    3. Turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting.
    4. Turn off proxy recording.
    5. Turn off focus breathing compensation.
    Other tips I’ve seen around include:
    1. Keeping the screen flipped out and away from the body (which we know, also not always ideal depending on your situation).
    2. Leaving the battery door open (which we know, but may not be ideal).
    3. Attach a lens on the camera instead of the body cap (heat can dissipate through the lens better than through the body cap).
    4. Don’t cradle the entire body of the camera in your hands for a significant period of time going through the menus and setting up the camera.
    5. Don’t play with it in bed (or any other location where it may be “suffocating” on a blanket, on a pillow, etc., just like you wouldn’t with a laptop).
    6. Do not have the camera in video capture mode while going through your settings, as the sensor is currently programmed to pull power at all times in movie mode, creating heat.
    If you have the body cap on, are cradling it fully with both of your hands coming into contact and covering most of the camera body, sitting in bed resting the camera in your hands on the blanket that’s on your lap, and you’re in video mode; it will probably overheat. Lol
    However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.”
    And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this.
    So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!

    Wonderful video Tristan and thanks for your take on the issue. I'm expecting my order to arrive tomorrow and after doing a bit of digging online, I've just discovered the overheating issue. Online forums managed to throw me off badly and I was starting to second guessing my purchase as well. But like you've said... it's 4K 60FPS that seems to be the main culprit here and it is a bit weird that people are complaining that they can't shoot in this mode for extended periods of time. Who in their right mind woulds buy THIS camera (a hybrid stills & video 33MP monstrosity for:
    1) Extended 4k 10bit 4:2:2 video shooting such as live events
    2) Half hour interviews at 4k 60FPS
    Some people do seem to have it worse than others in the overheating department, but I suspect that there MIGHT be some bad samples floating around, so it could be that it will overheat worse for others, but I don't see why they wouldn't be able to send it back to warranty or have it replaced if that's the case.

    Thanks for your video, I am hiving the overheat issue and your description of shooting in 4K 60 I can understand and I agree with you. But as a hobbiest my concern with the overheating is when it does it while I am not shooting and just moving through the menus. Dope camera for sure and you are correct the feature set is next level but I feel overheating when not recording is suspect and engineering may need to address that issue in firmware.

    • @TristanBarrocks
      @TristanBarrocks  2 роки тому +1

      I agree with you in some respects with the overheating while in the menus. I think whats happening, to be honest, is that although we are in the menus if the camera is still set to let's say 4K 60 then it will still be active in the setting until the user changes it. I know this may be a drag but I'm telling you this camera is dope. I've used many other Hybrid cameras and this one will defiantly become the top. Where are you from BTW and what things are you creating?

    • @MichelleUretsky
      @MichelleUretsky 2 роки тому +1

      I was told if you’re in video mode while looking at menus, the sensor is being powered, and creating heat. Some tips I got but haven’t tested are: don’t cradle the whole camera in your hands, don’t move through menus in bed where your camera is on a blanket (like how laptops and phones overheat), and put a lens on. Body cap holds heat in. Also, the “flip out the screen” thing. I hope it helps.

    I'm having overheating issues while just outputting clean hdmi, sitting idle. Have you seen it heat up while using the clean hdmi out? Even idle without recording? I exchanged my first one for a new unit and still have the same problem. I feel like I'm crazy, Sony is trying to tell me that should be normal. It's pretty unusable as a video camera with an external recorder, like on a gimbal or shoulder rig. All it takes is a couple 1 minute video clip recordings internally while outputting hdmi to overheat it. No matter what the resolution or bit depth.

    Hey Tristan really like your channel and what you're doing with it, I'm a old head. But would you put up with this if this was your musical instruments, electric guitar with amplifier, your television the new 4k, or maybe your auto vehicle. If this were a situation for those items the company would have a real dog on it's hands and the model could end up being a loser for them. I am an owner of an older model Sony a73 after these revelations I really don't see the point of even selling it because you definitely will need a second body to be on set or the scene to just keep you from freaking out from anxiety with technical crapola on the a74. And I do take your point of shooting at higher frame rates IE 60 or 120 for more specialized look or approach, but if you're sitting in bed or at your dining room table going through menus and the thing overheats doesn't really make for a confidence building attitude towards the product. ✌🏾🎥

      thanks for the comments. I actually don't think the issue is overheating in 24p. It is when it gets to the 60p frame rate where it can heat up but there are many workarounds for it which are much easier to use then what Canon has on the R6 line of cameras.

    I don't own the camera. It's sitting in my B&H Photo cart right now. I currently shoot with a bmpcc4k and want something that shoots 10 bit, 4k60 and has great autofocus. This ticks all those boxes. But this overheating issue is a problem for videographers. This isn't an a7s3 or an fx3, but it's also not cheap. In fact it's more expense than the pocket 6k, the Panasonic s5 and the new canon r7. None of those overheat - granted they either don't have autofocus or have mediocre autofocus. Final deliberation on the Canon r7 is still out since it has not been released yet. But yea, the A74 shouldn't overheat - especially since it's more expensive than those previously mentioned.
    I TOTALLY agree that shooting 4k 60 for an hour straight is ridiculous. No one should do that. I never do. But what scares me is that people are saying that they are having overheating shooting indoors at 24p even after taking all these "precautions." For real?? That 's a big no for me. I live and work in Miami and most of my shoots are outdoors. That won't fly down here. It also is somewhat of a slap in the face to have to go up to the a7s3 or fx3 for more than an extra $1k just to get something that doesn't overheat?! So again, overheating at 4k60 on extended shoots is understandable, but not on 24p....AT ALL! I'm really disappointed because I wanted to move into the Sony full-frame ecosystem but this scares me. If Sony upgraded the firmware and this was fixed, I would buy IMMEDIATLEY.

  • @MichelleUretsky

    I’m wondering about whether it overheats using the 120fps for slo-mo and fast-mo. Of course, these would usually be shorter clips… but… I guess I’ll need to test.
    My only gripe is that I don’t want to *have* to flip the screen out unless I want to. If I’m not in a studio-type environment, having the display sticking out could cause issues or be really inconvenient to do… The possibility of harming the screen if it’s flipped out in situations where your environment isn’t 100% predictable is a worry, and having an extra piece of equipment like an external monitor or processor might not be convenient if you are in a situation where carrying so much equipment just isn’t possible. I might go to prison if someone ran past me and either broke my screen off or broke the entire camera by catching the screen and it falling or something. I think someone would lose their life. And then, I’d be in prison with no chance of becoming a lawyer in the future. 🤣 I like the ability to flip the screen out, but I don’t want to be forced to do so.
    I also am not a fan of overheating my electronics simply because it can greatly reduce overall lifespan… and depending, it can harm the memory cards as well, and then you lose the footage.
    But I just got mine and haven’t tested it… I’m really hoping it’s okay or that Sony makes it right somehow.
    But I’m also just hoping that it doesn’t really come into play for me at all. I don’t think I’ll be recording high-fidelity video for a long time, but I did want to be able to create video content as well as high-quality photo content. I’m also guessing that using it to stream, while supposedly possible, would probably overheat it quickly. Couldn’t necessarily say for certain. But that’s a question as well.
    I’ll be so sad if it doesn’t work for me properly. Ugh.
    Because this really is the perfect camera, feature-wise for me.
    Though sometimes I consider the A7R series… but I do love that slo-mo and fast-mo ability with the 120fps. Just hope it works 🤣.

      The A1 is quite different, though. I mean. It has dual processors and has a lot more heat dispersion. The sensor in the A1 cannot accept as much light as the A7IV can. Light creates heat.

    • @MichelleUretsky
      @MichelleUretsky 2 роки тому

      It’s the “same chip,” but the A1 has TWO processors. Not just one. The sensor has the ability to achieve higher MP, but it is at the cost of low-light performance. And as I stated, because it doesn’t accept as much light, it doesn’t get as warm.
      Also, the screens are different. The flip-out screen is fully enclosed in the same metal that the body is made out of. Metal on metal conducts more heat. The tilting screen on the A1 does not have the full metal housing, and so the metal of the body touching the full metal casing on the back of the A7IV’s screen would conduct more heat. And the screen sits directly behind the sensor. So that’s where the heat is going.

    • @carlossantini
      @carlossantini 2 роки тому

      @@MichelleUretsky a1 generates more heat (dual processor) but the body form factor is the same in both cameras. So, if the a7iv has only one sensor and has the same form factor, its quite evident Sony could release this cam with the same heat dissipation features to deal any heat issues in the a7iv. And that feature shouldnt cost $4,000 more.

    • @MichelleUretsky
      @MichelleUretsky 2 роки тому

      @@carlossantini each chip would have its own heatsync. So. There’s more cooling in the A1 body. And most likely, it will be fixed with a firmware update. However, you’re ignoring the rest of what I said. The idea that more megapixels equals more heat is not true. Also, the A7IV’s ONE processor has to do all of the work, and there are processor-heavy features in the A7IV that the A1 doesn’t have. Like lens breathing correction.
