Yes that cabin has come a long way.. 2023 still watching you and city girl having a wonderful life.. and love all your antics and humour… how fab to have those vids to look back on 😊
So nice to see the introduction of the dogs as I started watch about 4 months ago and am catching up. Watching you older video's. Seeing the history of the channel unfolding. What wonderful dogs you have!!
If you take a piece of newspaper and ball it up, dip it in some water then dip it in some wood ash, this makes the best cleaner for your woodstove glass. It loosens up all the black stuff on the glass then just wipe with paper towel.
Hello Russell, just came across your channel and I enjoyed watching your videos tremendously! I especially fell in love with your dogs and It brought back memories of my Sarah who was also a pure black german shepherd playing with a neighbours black lab... always loved black animals and I’m proud to say my 26 year old son followed in the family tradition by getting himself another pure black german shepherd girl which coincidentally wouldn’t answer to any other name but Sarah!!! They are a joy to have around and I am looking forward to watching most (if not all) of your videos... keep up the good work and enjoy your beautiful fur babies 😃👍👍👍
LOVE when you tell the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Keep doing please! UK only does Celsius. Irritating. 🙄 Are you and City Girl ever going to make home or just a weekend getaway? Love your babies!
Hey Russell, just found your channel today and am really enjoying the videos. I'm willing to bet that when you get your cabin fully insulated, that stove is going to turn the place into a sauna in about an hour.
Hi SG, thanks for joining my channel. I think the single most common comment I've gotten is, "Get some damn insulation, man!" LOL. Will definitely be getting some before next winter. Won't be doing this again. Thanks for commenting.
Loved this video Russell and your dogs are so cute. They are such great looking animals and they love exploring. I am really enjoying watching your channel from the beginning.
You sir are truly living the live. It is beautiful out there. The cabin is starting to look very nice aswell, can't wait to see it finished. dune bug reminds me alot of our old lab and i've never seen a black shepard as beautiful as willow. And the video in parts is fine i prefer it actually. It is somehow quite relaxing watching you enjoy life of the grid.
i hate cold my place is in florida that is why when you said it took so long to warm up your cabin. its cold here in Pennsylvania, but I'm 84 and not much I can do so i stay up nights and watch most of you guys off grid cabins builds love them all but need to watch my Gb's or streaming or my cable company charges me extra .But love all you guys very interesting and entertaining.
Just found your channel and subscribed. It's much better than watching some of these shows on Netflix on outdoor living with silly music and planned events. By the way, I've cut lots of wood with the axe, just in case you don't know this trick...you can take a, say, 18"" car tire with small strong sidewalls and put it around your tree stump (measure stump). When you do this you can put 5-7 of those split logs you did in it and just chop away, while walking around the stump. No mini logs will fall out, so that means not bending over a hundred times picking up smaller starter wood since it's packed in the tire. Using a non-sledge axe is better, just a plain axe. A used tire shop will have a bald larger tire for free or very cheap. Plus it's fun to do. And a bicycle sports squirt bottle of plain water cures flare ups and fires on the grill. Love your dogs, they are beautiful friends. My dog Soccer just past away on the 8th, I miss him a lot.
Hi Duane welcome to my channel. Thanks for the kind comments. I have actually seen the tire trick before and it looks like a good idea, just haven't tried it yet. But I will, I hate the constant bending over. Have you seen the pickaroon? I want to get one of those too. Sorry to hear about Soccer. Our last dog left us in December and we still miss her.
Really great improvement in video quality. Shows you have been learning from editing the entire year ;) Ow and you enjoy your Scotch the way you like it. The only wrong way is to enjoy it is by telling others that they are wrong.
Thanks Jiinia, I appreciate your comments as I'm really trying to improve my video. Unfortunately I hadn't quite figured out the zoom functions before I made this trip. Oh well, will be better in future.
Just looking at your old vids.. in England we called it a lager and lime.. popular.. spent my young days ordering those drinks.. but also they thought you were a light weight not having the a straight lager🤣🤣🏴
I have laughed and laughed at the part around 26.20 where you jump up and show us how to make a Lime & Lager. These little touches of comedy are great! I've shared this with friends. Good stuff, keep it coming.
Russell, I love your channel and I just thought I'd go back to the beginning. Did you know you cn clean your stove glass with a wet rag dipped into (cool) ashes? Works like a charm!
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin Sorry for being repetitive! Wish there was a way to check previous comments before bothering you with one. but if there is, I don't know how. So, because it works so well, I felt compelled to share it. I always use a piece of newspaper, wadded-up and dipped in water and then into the ashes in the ash pan.
Your dogs are loveable. I just found your channel and I have been watching quite a few of you videos and I decided to Subscribe. So far they have been really entertaining. I hope you show more of your cabin and dogs. A little suggestion is what you need is a set of tracts for your bike. I know they are expensive but if you plan on making trips to your cabin in the winter it would be well worth it, or pick up a good used snow machine.
Hi Dwight, welcome to my channel. I've been watching videos of ATVs with tracks (and drooling) but it's just another thing I can't afford just yet (along with insulation, flooring, walls, etc). Hopefully I'll have something by next winter. There will be more videos of the cabin and the dogs, I'm working on Part 2 right now. Cheers.
Your 1st video was suggested by UA-cam. Holy seems so long ago. You sound different, crazy huh? Nice to see where it all started. You’re channels come a long way. Congrats
This isn't the first video, although it is the first video where I was actually trying to produce a decent youtube video. If you go to my channel home page, click videos, then select sort by oldest, you'll see there are about 12 videos before this one.
This is the first of the serious videos, John. Before this video, everything was shot on my cellphone, and mostly for my wife so she could see that I wasn't just spending time at a strip club. This video started my "let's do this youtube thing"
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin Russ, all your hard work shows. I Can tell DSR, Gopro and phone thanks to you. Really enjoy all your content and I've watched 1 or 2. Lol. Be wrll.
Re-watching early videos; a little older, a little wiser. Protip: Rose's Lime Cordial is labeled as "Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice" in the United States. This definitely threw me off the trail in my pursuit of trying a lime and lager for a little while; since Russell was so adamant about not getting the "lime juice." I couldn't image what the difference would be, so I just tried it. Pretty good. I later found a website that informed me it was just a labeling difference in the US.
Yah man, figured that out after months of chatting it about it during livestreams. Not sure why the name difference, who knows. Oh, and those old videos...heh.
I used to drink lager n lime back in the 70s on. Summer evening. I forgot about that drink here in the UK. Nice refreshing drink. If dogs shiver, just feel the inner flap of the ears,if it feels cool that’s means core body temp is low.
Hey Bryan, if you find a property you like, shoot me an email and I'll take a look at it for you (not physically, but I'll check it out on GIS). Maybe I can offer advice. russell@solardirectcanada.com
need some insulation and vapour barrier asap. our cottage is under construction and the place is as cold (if not colder) inside than out since we've only got plywood walls up and siding.
Hi Mikey, thanks for the comments. Sounds like we're in similar situations at the moment. I would have insulated but I ran out of money. Hope to do it before next winter though. Don't want to go through the same shite again.
Great video as always, and yes it is beer time, before dinner. Great looking dogs, that the one thing I need to look into is bet me a pet, to take with me to my off grid farm.
I know what you mean about being lonely. I work alone, every day, and when I go to the farm same thing. There are not many women that want to do what we are doing, living part time off grid, in harsh environments. Taking a crap in a bucket, freezen your but off, etc etc. But I love it, and I know you do too. One day when we both look at it, I will be thankful I did.
Just came across your channel. Love your dogs. Where is your cabin.? I'm in Kingston. Are you in Ontario. I watch a lot of bushcraft ingredients. Joe Robinet I like he makes me smile all the time. You have a lovely cabin and view of the lake.Takes time to build but your doing good.Ill be watching you again, see how your coming with the cabin.Love the dogs.
I really like the big window on the fireplace. Just wanted to let you know, your editing is getting really good. Mice love that dog food, recommend keeping it in a Rubbermaid container.
Hey Russ. I was showung my wife your dogs and asked what breed they were. I knew I watched a video where you mentioned it and I found this one. Where you park your car, that building that id there, is that on your property?
Hey Jason, this is my 'neighbour's' property. They allowed me to park my car there over the winter. I usually park my car in the snowplow turnaround, but it's better not to be there when there's snow.
Becky, this is the first video with the pups, but there's about a dozen videos that come before this one. If you go to my channel, then click Videos, you can sort by oldest first.
Just a hint for cleaning the glass on the wood stove - take a moist piece of newspaper, dip it in the ashes in the stove and polish the glass. Let it sit for a minute then clean the "fog" off the glass. It seems take a while longer for the glass to dirty up.
Yah I had no time last year to gather firewood so I played catchup all winter long. Sucks. Hopefully I have enough for this winter, but I doubt it. I'll be looking for more. Sometimes I wish I had Joe's level of OCD so I could get things done.

I'm not fond of being cold either. Are you saying it cost $250 for a winter's worth of pellets?
fun to get out to the cabin, cut some wood, get a ripping fire, and drinking a nice cold beer.

You know it! Can't wait to get back there. Unfortunately we got over a foot of snow the a few days ago and I don't think the ATV will make it.

is this supposed to be season 1?
Pretty much. There are about a dozen videos before this one but this one is where I started filming for realzies

Good eye, Brad. Great freakin novel.
How long does it take you to get from your car after you park it to your cabin?
15 minutes if it's just me on the ATV. 30 to 45 minutes if I have the trailer on and a big load. 50 minutes walking.
