So there is nothing better then sitting in front of the fire and relaxing with your beautiful dogs. Keep up the great job see you on the next one...Cheri from New Hampshire
Another fantastic video courtesy of Junebug and Willow. I am in love with Ur woodstove. Reminds me when I was a young, an huddled round the fireplace in dead of winter. Thanks for sharing. Your small chunk of Eden Stay safe in the woods
Stuffed up.... probably from the dry heat from burning wood. Put a can of water on top of stove to put moisture into air. We had a gas space heater in house I grew up in and we kept a veggi can of water on the front of heater , it really helped.
Just watching this video. Starting at the beginning to see your story. Laughed at your dog, eyeing off your smoked salmon. Better than their dried food, it's full of salt. I heard them drinking a lot after their dinner. That food shortens their life span too. ❤
Russell I was watching a video from Three years ago. I see the big mistake collecting wood in the winter. My mom and dad would collect the wood in august and September not in winter. In the winter you have other things to do Good luck
Nice cabin and property. Once you get your insulation all in that stove will barely have to idle to keep you nice and toasty! Have a great weekend......Darryl, AML.
Love this! You're living our dream!! Learning a lot and love the dogs and the beers--you are definitely having fun. Going to binge watch tonight with a beer of my own.
Beer recommendations for next winter trip: City Steam Naughty Nurse Lawsons Sip of Sunshine Peroni Insence: Hem Musk Hem Pine I am in the North Eastern region of the United States so I am not sure how available these local craft beers are for you like they are to me but I think you will like them. Good video man Forgot to mention that you may want to have water boiling on the top of the wood stove at all times. The stove sucks all the moisture out of the air and that may be why you get a stuffy nose. Can lead to bad nose bleeds
You need a J. A. Roby woodcook stove. Heat the cabin and cook at the same time, even bake bread, cookies. And organization !! It makes work go easier and even daily life easier. Smart using 2 spatulas !! Grilled ham, cheese and onion, the best. But your's looking very good. I can't eat bread any more, sad. And as you know by now, get ALL your wood cut, stacked and dried by mid Sept. .God bless
Hey, this is great, I also have a cabin in the woods off the grid. I try to get there as often as possible but I am a 70 year old lady on my own with health issues.I purchased my cabin all ready built and lucky me, the guy who built it did a super job, insulated to R40 and do I appreciate that on a cold day. So far I haven't been there in the snow as I don't have an ATV but I do use it 3 seasons. I am planning to do the solar panels just to charge my batteries but so far I just haven't got to that yet. I also have a small wood stove for heat and some of my cooking. I also have a small portable camp gas stove for quick cooking. Now, I do have a question...where do you sleep? do you have a sleeping loft like I do ? It seems the pups use the couch so that is out of the question. Anyway, just wondering. You have a great time and enjoy, I can so relate with what you are doing.
Hi Sandie nice to hear from you. I see in another comment that you're also near Madoc. Your cabin is insulated to R40! That's damn impressive. I thought mine was going to be pretty good. Where do I sleep? I have a loft area up above and a full queen size bed with memory foam mattress. I wanted to sleep as well here as I have ever slept in a home. Although we still climb a ladder to get up there. I think in some of my videos you can see the loft area... oh I'm thinking the "5 things I did right" video.
Thanks for your reply, it is great to hear from you. I also have a loft area with Queen bed. The stairs are a bit steep to navigate with my severe arthritis but I am determined to keep going as long as I can. I recently covered the wooden stairs with carpet squares so my dog gets a better grip when she goes up there with me. She won't stay downstairs and insists on being as close to me as possible.I haven't seen your earlier videos yet but look forward to watching them soon. My project for next summer is to build a water catchment system. Just for utility water mostly. I carry most of my water in right now except for the small amount I am able to glean from the down spouts at this time. You are lucky you have an indoor shower, I guess that is what you get when you build for yourself. I have an outdoor area with just a sink at the moment but my son in law is looking at building me an outdoor enclosure with a shower system similar to yours.I am so happy to hear from someone in Canada at last as most of the off grid people seem to be in the states. Anyway, thank you again for replying, and if ever you get to Madoc let me know, maybe we can meet for coffee and discuss our cabins. Take care.

I was interested to see a bottle of Captain Morgan on the bench. That is really yummy stuff!!keep the cold out!!!I didn't realize it went out of Australia
Can I give you a few suggestions. What you have to do in the spring is to get your wood, so it has time to dry, you properly know that. I guess with the cabin build you did not have the time. Also if you want to have your stove a long time is to sand it down to get the rust off it and then coat it with cooking oil, this will preserve it, It will smoke for a while, it is just like you do to a cast-iron fry pan and it will last a long time. Then you can cook your toast or begal on top it's better than a toaster, all you have to do is wipe it down with wax paper. If you want a good steak, try cooking it on your coals, you are going to have to build a grate. I know every thing takes time, in the end you will enjoy it, the more times you go.
Just subscribed and I wondered why you did not split the cabin area in to two sections to try and keep some greater heat in a living area? I am not from a cold environment so maybe this would be wrong to do.
Hey Rick, the draft inlets don't do much atm because the gasket on the window pretty much does nothing and air just flows in anyway. I hear you about the dryness, but it was happening all last summer and fall too.
if you turn those two knobs on either side of that stove you shouldn't have to open the door to create a draw draft, that's what they are for.Turn them counter clock wise to open and clock wise to close them .
Thanks, Joe. The air intakes don't do much as the gasket around the glass needs replacing and lets in air anyway. I have to leave the door open regardless of what I do with the air intakes.
You might find the cabin is warmer if you insulate it with insulation. You don't have to do it all at once just a couple of bags every trip. Just a thought.
Great videos buddy, just one thought, use the vents on each side of the woodstove to keep your fire burning and heat up the cabin more efficiently. what parts of the woods are you in?
Thanks Lambert. Without insulation I have to keep the woodstove rocking otherwise the cabin starts to cool down. Which is why I go through so much firewood. My cabin is not far from Madoc, Ontario.
Hey there, have watched most of your videos and just trying my best to enjoy them, but you have to put some of that clutter in the storage shed. Hi Nyght, actually my walls are 2x6 and I had every intention of putting in 5 1/2" roxul when I had the money. Though I may just go with the 3 1/2" just to save some money. Haven't decided yet. And yes, I already have the expanding (low) foam for the windows, I just haven't done it yet.
Go with the thicker Roxul you won't regret it. I recently used it on part of a remodel in my house and the difference is amazing. It is more expensive but worth it, you get what you pay for. Insulate well now and use less fire wood in the future

Absolutely, I should have brought in some firewood last year except I was too busy building the cabin. Won't make that mistake again.
I had the same issue with firewood last year. Time gets away from you. Got that fixed this year. Looked like a good trip.
Thanks Howie. It sure is a pain when you don't have enough stacked up, eh.
Looks good that sandwich .
