I'm a "city slicker" and a dog lover, but even I understand that certain dogs are bred for certain purposes and do certain jobs. To me, your dogs are well taken care of. They haven't been left outside chained up with no food, shelter, and no one looking after them. They have 2 shelters, get fed at least twice a day from the looks of it, get love/pet/care from their owner, and can roam over multiple acres of land most of the time, not to mention they get vet care whenever they need it. LGD are the gentlest method of protecting livestock and even pets, for that matter. My Anatolian also protected my cats and smaller dog. There are a lot of people losing cats and dogs to coyotes
@@matthewhuszarik4173Stop anthropomorphizing animals. Dogs have lived outside for millennia. They are incredible at adapting to their environment and different breeds will have certain characteristics that allows them to comfortably live in their given environment. Toby and Abby are exceptionally well taken care of. They have beautifully maintained coats which keep them nice and toasty during the winter. Both also have a lovely cabin full of straw to cozy up during extra cold nights. They would also be allowed to come inside, if they really wanted. But they actually *want* to spend their time outside doing their job. If you get a working dog breed they will automatically show the characteristics that made them so suitable for the work in the first place, and will get deeply depressed if not allowed to work or without appropriately adapted activities. A husky will always be very active, and will want to go on very long walks. A collie will automatically look for something to herd and protect. Beagles will love to do scent tracing and will have a very active prey drive. Any type of guardian lifestock breed will automatically be territorial. It's just part of their genetics, and their character will show that. If not allowed to follow those instincts, they can become incredibly destructive in a home and can develop behavioral issues.
It is comical that so many have no idea how the world outside thier screen time really works. Not everyone lives in a city, not everyone protects their property in the same way and not everyone thinks the same or have the same beliefs. Americans in particular seem to have an issue with anyone not falling in line with their beliefs.
I've been watching this morning videos on farming in China. They manage to produce so much using simple but clever tools. It was great to see people working with their hands and producing so much .
My husband is really upset about Solomon staying outside. He is an 8 month old Great Pyrenees with adequate shelter and bedding. Loved how they went to the sun spots, really great shot.
You know you can satisfy your husband and your great pyrenees. Get a dog door designed for your dog. Put in a fenced in backyard and allow your dog the option to come in and out as he pleases. That way your husband will be comforted knowing the dog can come inside and the dog can be outside whenever he wishes to be. I think you'll find in the summer he'll prefer the AC and in the winter he'll prefer being outside
Tell your husband to put 3-4 of the warmest coats he has and maybe some ski clothes underneath and leave them on all day and all night. Crank the heat up to 80. Ask him how he likes it.
@@1coketogo554 This past Winter I would bring Solomon in for a very short time because he would get too hot. The hub would see how quickly he got too hot so I think it is fine now. Great idea though. lol.
You can tell the two dogs think the absolute world of you just based on how they look at you. They are SO loved. Seeing the additional thought and care you put into them, as well, is so awesome. Nice freakin' job, dude. Awesome video.
We had two Great Pyrenees dogs that would lie out on a hill in the dead of winter with full blast of the winter wind blowing on them. They were in heaven. We had dog houses for them, but they wanted no part of those shelters. They were too busy in their element: guarding and monitoring the farm.
I turned two small rubber tubs into winter cat boxes for our barn cats. Our Shepard husky mix simply doesn't care about shelter 98% of the year. Our chickens only NEED heat for about one week of our winter season unusually. But I provide a low power bulb for extra daytime hours regardless. And my pot belly pigs only NEED heat when they have litters. But again, I provide a lamp because comfort and survival are not the same thing. We have similar weather I find very often. NS Canada
I have Pyrenees with my sheep and three others who are mostly pets. The ones who could choose to sleep inside rarely do. Their coats are incredibly warm, and the snow under them doesn’t melt at all when they sleep on it. My oldest comes inside during rain, but she still loves snow and ice
The farm functions like a single giant organism. It functions well, exactly how it's meant to. Only people who feel the need to project their own ideals onto the world would think otherwise. I think they're not worth being concerned over Morgan. I'm quite sure that if there had been any issues over the last few years, then the vets would have pointed them out, and you would have fixed them long ago. "There's nowt as strange as folk," is the traditional Yorkshire saying. It's as true today as it ever was. 😊😊❤❤❤❤😊😊
I know they’re working dogs and they are so good at their jobs. But adorably they also are extremely devoted to Morgan. Those a such sweet moments! Also I think Abby is coming into herself as a guardian. I definitely needed more puptaient today!
It would be a joy to have a farm as wonderful as yours, everything and everybody on that farm has a purpose, it doesn’t get any better than that, you are definitely living the dream, that whole farm must be blessed! 😊
I absolutely love these types of videos so I’m truly not complaining but my goodness I can’t believe you have to explain this to people. They are dogs which are breed for this exact type of lifestyle and you provide them with all the need and then some. They look happy, healthy and loved to me🤷🏽♂️
Hey Morgan: Gotta comment again about how good you are with added background music. It is perfect for each situation and never too loud or too soft for whatever moment you are highlighting. Love it. You have a good ear. You never over do it either. Great episodes and wonderful content. Happy holidays to you and your wife and all the animals.
Toby-dog seemed to be eating around his egg. "They say" that the white part of the egg -- the albumin -- is twice as digestible if it's cooked. Even for dogs. The American Kennel Club says raw egg white could lead to a biotin deficiency. Cooking kills the enzyme in the egg white that prevents biotin absorption. Thought it was worth mentioning, since you frequently give your dogs eggs -- and you obviously love your dogs, as do we❣
if you lived on or grew up on or around a farm, you understand the concepts of farm dog & barn cat. Your animals are very well cared for. Just for the haters, I'm canning venison while watching this video
Wow, Morgan! It's amazing to HEAR how your area comes alive with sound and activity at night! (It's noisier there than my place in a city!) It warms my heart to see the love you have for your beloved animals! Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Gold!
Crazy to think people actually can't grasp the idea of having an farm dog like as if dogs are meant to be stuck in your living room not living its life. and immediately accusing you of being a bad owner lol.
Talk to any person who has ever owned a cold weather dog. They love the cold and hate the heat. In winter, the nice warm house is too hot. I had a lab and a golden, a dog door and snow. They hung out outside if given the choice.
My grandma calls me once a week to remind me to keep my dog inside the house because I live in a mountain region and it gets pretty cold here. My dog is a husky 😂 A lot of people are having this feeling because they are trying to empathize with the dog using their own sensibility as a reference point, which is, actually, insane 😅Arctic and high altitude dogs have special double coats, that completely prevents frost on their hair and provide perfect insulation for temperatures that go up to -50 Celsius. Arctic dogs specifically have even a different shape of mouth, which also prevents any drooling, because drooling causes frost to occur on their lips, which would be detrimental in those temperatures. We should be aware that these are different animals then us. They don't just live in the cold, they were born in it, molded by it 🥶😁
Thank You to explaining all of that to your audience. You are taking care those dogs, like it is seldom done nowadays. It is due to the misconception, that (usually city folk) believe that they favouring their large size dog, by keeping them in inside and treating them as small lapdogs. That is of course the opposite what they should do. The other lovely thing you done is that you bought a teammate to your original farmdog. It is good for more yhan one reason, but I finish the comment, because it is already longer than I like. The Best Wishes to You All !
Have to say I bought and love Toby Dogs book! I also enjoy watching you show how a working guardian dog is different from my house pet dog. Working dogs are important in this world and have been for centuries. Thank you for sharing your life with us!
We rescued a Great Pyrenees, also a Livestock Guardian Dog breed, and eventually found him an excellent working home. During the year we had him, he would settle out in the yard overnight and in the morning would have droplets of ice frozen to the tips of his fur. He had his own indoor space, but would choose to sleep in the elements unless it was storming. These are hardy working breeds who have minds of their own.
I grew up in a country where dogs have jobs to do, usually to guard properties. We love our dogs but like any member of the household, they have chores to do. Your dogs looks amazing and healthy.
This Video was sooooo great! Absolutely love the energy shifts and music. I also love winters. This insight into Toby's and Abby's daily life is just awesome! Thank you very much. Keep it up!
Been somewhat consistently -20 Fahrenheit every winter where I'm at...usually for a month or two. Lots of dog breeds can make it through temps like that...lots of them will complain about going back into the too warm house. Context is important, also dogs are good at huddling for warmth. They don't worry about being "no homo bro".
I also have 2 G.P. and I live in Alaska. The dogs have an enclosed porch they can get on when ever they want yet they are nearly always outside. In the winter it snows a lot except when it's too cold to snow. Even in the coldest weather they will be curled up in the snow happily sleeping away. In the summer it rains a lot and seldom gets up to 70 degrees. They will go out and sleep in the rain. Even worse they seem to prefer sleeping in the mud. They will sleep in the muddy trail with a nice grassy spot 2 feet away. Then they jump on each other and wipe the mud off their feet onto their buddy. Keeping them clean is pretty much impossible. I will occasionally lock them on the porch in hopes they will dry out enough to brush but that doesn't seem to happen often. I can get them cleaned up pretty well in the winter when the mud is covered in snow. They like to come in to be with us and maybe take a nap but then they are ready to get back outside again.
Love your music. It reminds me of the old Saturday morning cartoons that introduced so many of us “boomers” to classical music. Gold Shaw Farms continues to be my favorite UA-cam channel.
I just ordered 2 copies of the Toby book as gifts for my son's fiancé who is a social worker at a Detroit elementary school, and her sister, who is a kindergarten teacher in Grand Rapids.
We used to keep all dogs outside when I was a kid and that's when winters used to be really bad. We had a block structure with a concrete foundation and a 2x4 and plywood roof with a slope and an open doorway. Inside was two wooden doghouses with a roof as well and staggered slit carpets over the door openings. A couple of times, bieng a kid, I crawled in there with the dogs and it was suprisingly warm. No rain or wind could get in due to the outer structure and the inner structures couuld withstand outside weather by themselves. It was a treat to have the dogs in the house and over the years we started keeping the dogs in the house. They never acted like it was a big deal and these were short haired dogs. I really like having a dog inside, but I have had inside dogs that were fine with outside to the point where they would sleep on the snow and even get covered by it. They had the choice to go into a weatherproof shelter and skipped it and stayed outside.
I liked the video you posted last year about Toby in “flouf mode” and “beast mode”. Working dogs like having a job to do and love being outside. I think if they had their way, they would love for their humans to live outside with them! Hahaha
Thxs for this vlog…I luv to see how the dogs work. I used to have a Great Pyrenees, but he got into a fight with a cougar & lost. Was gone for 2 days and came back home with his chest ripped open. So sad🥲. So I really luv to see how ur dogs r so happy to protect ur farm👍
It's simple for people who don't know. Certain dog breeds were bred to live in certain climates. These dogs would rather be outside. And at this point the freedom to move around and the job to protect the farms is what makes them happy
People don't understand that a working LGD WANTS to be outside at night. That is when danger is highest. They also may not understand that a Maremma, like a Great Pyrenees, is double coated. They can lay covered in the snow and be very warm at the skin.
lol because they are built for it :) same way there are handbag dogs and house dogs and sheep dogs there are... wait for it.... outside dogs that live amoung the animals as SECURITY and the animals love them for it and the dogs love it too.
I live in the Islands and animals don’t live inside of the house. I raised dogs and they all lived outside their entire life. They are in the house as puppies, but once they are weened, outside they go. The dogs protected our property. We cooked a week worths of food once a week for them. They were happy to roam our property .
I've been binging your videos on my tv.. I just saw where Abby was getting out.. which I said bet she's pushing under the fence cause that's how my big make rottie was escaping so we ran the cattle wire charged on the bottom and it worked great

At least 96% of their job is peeing - as soon as we had our LGD we stopped seeing new coyote tracks. They can tell by LGD' excrement that they are huge and eat meat. All species have territory in the wild. These are loving, mellow breeds that maintain their ancestors' wild love of the outdoors. LGD are the gentlest method of protecting livestock and even pets, for that matter. My Anatolian also protected my cats and smaller dog. There are a lot of people losing cats and dogs to coyotes

Isn’t it ironic since we’re also so heavily centered on individualism? 😂
THANK YOU for this post❤❤!! Everything you said is so very true and comical, and the ignorance/naive thinking amonst most!!
I've been watching this morning videos on farming in China. They manage to produce so much using simple but clever tools. It was great to see people working with their hands and producing so much .
And dogs have lived outside, well, forever!
Many people disbelieve facts that are outside their own life experiences. As such, they aren’t open to new learning.
Thank you for letting these dogs live the life the are supposed to.
Solomon is fine, he is here to guard our feathered foul farm.We have 2 Great Danes in the house.@@ChloeMMorgan
Great idea though. lol.
I'd say your pups are pretty dang happy.
I have the impression that Toby has come to appreciate Abby more since she has been in quarantine
Love when you share nite time with dogs!! I was a nocturnal nurse myself. So amazing at nite!!
I absolutely enjoy your choice of music with your videos--as well as your videos..a plus for my days--Thank You and Allison
Those are some glorious, healthy and very happy working dogs. What a team.
This man is living in a dream, a complete wonderland of all good and pure
I wonder if it’s going to be a cold winter?
Toby has the heaviest coat I’ve ever seen on him.
They both look very happy with their life.
there seems to be a warm area forming in the arctic, which will likely push the colder air south, so possibly cold winter ahead
Toby is such a thoughtful eater…
The farm functions like a single giant organism. It functions well, exactly how it's meant to. Only people who feel the need to project their own ideals onto the world would think otherwise.
I think they're not worth being concerned over Morgan.
I'm quite sure that if there had been any issues over the last few years, then the vets would have pointed them out, and you would have fixed them long ago.
"There's nowt as strange as folk," is the traditional Yorkshire saying. It's as true today as it ever was. 😊😊❤❤❤❤😊😊
Everybody needs to contribute and feel needed. Good life for those 2....nice contribution to the farm...much respect
The birds have really nibbled down the plants that you were nurturing in the hoop coop this summer. Awesome!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
6:55 I love the shot of them dozing in their sunbeams. ❤
Me too, they looked so adorable!
Yep they generally sleep and lay around during the day and usually sleep out with the goats grazing 😊
They look happy, healthy and loved to me🤷🏽♂️
Genuine, hard working breed. Truly man's best friend and protector
You have two very sweet, working farm dogs. Looks like Abby has finally settled down a little bit. And Toby is a very sweet boy.
They have furr that can handle the cold which is amazing toby and abby did good protecting your farm
Thought it was worth mentioning, since you frequently give your dogs eggs -- and you obviously love your dogs, as do we❣
These dogs couldn’t be happier their doing what they love to do. And providing security for this farm.
if you lived on or grew up on or around a farm, you understand the concepts of farm dog & barn cat. Your animals are very well cared for. Just for the haters, I'm canning venison while watching this video
Wow, Morgan! It's amazing to HEAR how your area comes alive with sound and activity at night! (It's noisier there than my place in a city!)
It warms my heart to see the love you have for your beloved animals! Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Gold!
The pretty instrumental music is a nice touch
Crazy to think people actually can't grasp the idea of having an farm dog like as if dogs are meant to be stuck in your living room not living its life. and immediately accusing you of being a bad owner lol.
Morgan, your dogs are better looked after most people I know. Fed, watered, loved, cared for and cherished.
Toby looks like a majestic white lion in the winter, such an amazing dog
Toby is such a wonderful dog, he's so chilled but obviously adores you.
Toby and Abby are such happy dogs ❤ Your channel is of my favourite list on UA-cam. I am a huge fan from Portugal
Apennine LGD's warning nocturnal predators is relatable to the flower duet from Lakmé. Thank you for sharing
Talk to any person who has ever owned a cold weather dog. They love the cold and hate the heat. In winter, the nice warm house is too hot. I had a lab and a golden, a dog door and snow. They hung out outside if given the choice.
I love this guy!!! I talk to my dogs like this also!!
Your dogs are so beautiful and smart, I love watching them work!
I really enjoy checking in to see how Toby and Abbey are getting on with their guardianship duties.
For a professional guardian dog, Toby sure got his coat dirty 😄❤️
i has been watching you for so many years , since you buy the property
I love dogs. They’re amazing creatures, and I reckon they’re way smarter than we give them credit for.
My grandma calls me once a week to remind me to keep my dog inside the house because I live in a mountain region and it gets pretty cold here. My dog is a husky 😂
A lot of people are having this feeling because they are trying to empathize with the dog using their own sensibility as a reference point, which is, actually, insane 😅Arctic and high altitude dogs have special double coats, that completely prevents frost on their hair and provide perfect insulation for temperatures that go up to -50 Celsius.
I love your videos about your gorgeous doggles, they're my favourite! Nice to see some afternoon action too, so often we see morning chores. ❤
Keep it up!
Need more Toby dogs
I love how your are SO personable with your dogs. All your animals!
Haven't seen your videos in a while and I am so happy to see Abby protecting the farm by Toby's side.
It looks like you are in good hands with those amazing dogs😊
They are two very special dogs.
We have 6 livestock guardian dogs Great Pyrenees. They also stay outside too. We live in Montana
Your dogs are working 24-7
I quite like the background music! And love how expressive your doggos are.
Every winter, Morgan feels the need to explain WHY the dogs LIVE outside during the cold winter season of Vermont!! Love you Morgan!!
I liked the video you posted last year about Toby in “flouf mode” and “beast mode”. Working dogs like having a job to do and love being outside. I think if they had their way, they would love for their humans to live outside with them! Hahaha
The dogs sleeping should be the new moment of zen.❤
Thank you for sharing your life with us!!! I love Toby and Abby.
I just got your Toby dog book!! I’m so excited to read it and I’m glad to be able to support you, your wife and all your lovely animals.
I have a female Pyranee and she’s the smartest dog I have ever had. She’s 13 now and she is really my best friend I have ever had !
Very sad to read that. My sympathies. 😔
Great choice of background music. I loved the high falutin restaurant music during duck and geese feeding chaos.
It's simple for people who don't know. Certain dog breeds were bred to live in certain climates. These dogs would rather be outside. And at this point the freedom to move around and the job to protect the farms is what makes them happy
I remember the haunting howl of coyotes when I had the house in Lyndeborough NH. Creeped me out! Love you playing Mozart too!
I live in Sicily and we have so many of these dogs in shelters.
I freaking love Toby Dog, hes so sweet and gentle but at the same time put hes switch on, and he could be a Beast
Love it
❤❤❤
You doin a great job👍😘
My 6 year old and I love your videos! ❤
I love seeing videos like this. Informative, educational and real
I've been binging your videos on my tv.. I just saw where Abby was getting out.. which I said bet she's pushing under the fence cause that's how my big make rottie was escaping so we ran the cattle wire charged on the bottom and it worked great
