3:03 "we call them samurai" well not really, not yet at least. Bushi translated means warrior (bushido -> way of the warrior). The term samurai became a thing once the whole shogunate thing became the norm and samurai actually became a social class (think knights)
9:55 indeed, the samurai loved the firearms. When people screech about "ohh it's not honorable to kill someone at a distance like that" I always say 2 things:
    1. Most samurai were mounted archers first.
    2. "honor" in the context of samurai means to "serve your lord untill death". So if shooting someone means it would be the easiest way to serve your lord, a samurai would do it.
(lil sidenote on the honor thing, people always call shinobi no mono (the ninja) dishonorable because they stab people in the back and such. Now with the new meaning of honor that I just told you about, it shouldn't come as a suprise that some samurai were also shinobi. Samurai was a class, shinobi a job.
15:36 fun fact about harakiri/sepukku is that the reason they went for the stomach is because in japanese culture it was believed that the spirit resided in the stomach and so they cut it open to free the spirit.
16:16 they always had an army of mixed classes. the well known ashigaru who are basically your standart medieval japanese foot soldier are an example of that. The samurai was the warrior class, yes, but just like in europe they had normal peasant and what not conscripts to fight along side their elite warrior class.
Whoo I typed a lot, but that's why we're here; to learn

To add to your "shinobi a job" comment, not only was it a job, it was a contracted job. A lord looking for shinobi to do a job for him would write, or have someone else, out a contract specifying exactly what was expected and the shinobi in question would sign.

@@HistorysRaven yes but also he could have one of his samurai that served directly under him, who was a shinobi by profession, do it aswell.
depends on the lord and his influence I guess.

quite late but to add to samurai using firearms. There is a rather famous battle in japan where firearms begin to see widespread use (not sure if this is the beginning, but it is one of the more famous one). The battle of Nagashino where Oda Nobunaga was said to use a 3 line formation (a formation where gunners form into 3 lines taking turns firing & reloading) and palisades to mow down the famed Takeda cavalry.

Something that is missed, or maybe I missed in this video, is that many of the Meiji military advisors came directly from the samurai class. They gave up their position, but they did it because they thought it was what was best for the country. And the Imperial Guard was made up of mostly former samurai.
Talking about the movie, where American were military advisors to the Imperial Army in the movie, it was actually Prussians who advised the army in reality.

16:43 In 2018 Sabaton came back to Japan to play similar size shows in April and March. But the big deal for them was also to to open for Babymetal in October. I believe that was their biggest crowd for Sabaton in Japan. Although Sabaton also performed at the Loud Park festivals in 2015 and 2017. So not 100% certain.
Sabaton opened for BABYMETAL on October 30th and 31st, 2018 at WORLD Kinen Hall, Kobe, Japan. For the EXTRA SHOW 'DARK NIGHT CARNIVAL' on October 28th at Saitama Super Arena. Sabaton was grateful and Joakim agreed to be featured on a Babymetal song: Oh, Majinai ! That came out on the album in 2019: Metal Galaxy. Lead singer Su-metal's said it's her favorite song on the album. And in 2019 the said her metal album of the year was Sabaton's The Great War: "I tend to listen to this album in the mornings, because Joakim's [Brodén, Sabaton singer] powerful vocals encourage me to push forward and achieve something great every day. But listening to it on the train is dangerous because I get into the groove too much and then I tend to miss the stops I'm supposed to get off at!"

You are correct. Mutsuhito's reign is called Meiji, his son Yoshihito's reign (1912-1926) was called Taisho, and his son was Hirohito, with his reign being Showa. The Previous emperor Akihito was Hirohito's son, and his reign is called Heisei. The current emperor is Naruhito with his reign being called Reiwa

Regarding the different names of Emperors, they go by their given names until they ascend to the throne, then they assume a regnal name, like Meiji or Showa. Historically, events are recorded in "X year of the reign of the Emperor Y."

Beware. Some other UA-camrs who reacted to the song Hearts of Iron their video was taken down due to hate speech i think. Will admit no idea how it works could be from a different country. No idea if the sabaton history video also get taken down. Also wouldn't be surprised if the following songs got similar treatment, Wehrmacht, Rise of evil, and We Burn. But i due recommend listening if not reacting to Hearts of Iron. It takes the perspective of the German 12th Army at the end of the war.
As always keep it up and appreciate your insight.

At the start of a new Emperor's reign, Japan officially enters into a new era and the calender is reset. Right now it's year 3 of the Reiwa Era. When the current Emperor Naruhito dies he will be posthumously renamed to Emperor Reiwa.

I know the Samurai were 2 million strong across the country, but the Emperor could've taken the highest ranking Samurai throughout and made them Generals of entire armies, or had a 2 million strong Samurai Army. I mean, so many missed opportunities.

I would say that the problem with holding on to the chast system was that, under the chast system, Samurai were basically above the law unless they angered someone above them.
The whole point of the Meiji restoration was to adopt western ideals such as the rule of law, where each person is equal under the law. Holding onto the chast system would be like trying to hold onto serfdom in the west.

Fun fact about Bushido, our modern ideas of it today are kind of ahistorical, it doesn’t really become a solidified thing until the samurai are on the decline so to speak (the term existed but prior to this but it was pretty vague, the strict defined code of honour was actually something kind of invented to appeal to westerners, the work that created the modern idea of bushido was largely seen as a joke in Japan initially until it was adopted and repurposed later by the Meiji government to create a continuity with the old and create patriotism for the new gov which had been initially deeply unpopular in its early years)

Looking at it from the emperor's perspective the writing was on the wall for the samurai class. What need is there for spending resources training someone from birth to be an elite warrior when they can be killed by a peasant armed with a rifle and minimal training? If the samurai lose there value as warriors are they still deserving of special status?
When the times change we have to change too.
Anyway that's my take on it. Thanks I've been having lots of fun watching your reaction videos and learning more history.

Hello! I'm just a fly-by comment bringing you a very quick briefing about the names of the Emperors of Japan. I will skip over all the religious and political stuff as I am not an expert, but basically Emperors have two names: their given name and their reign name. They will chose what name they will be referred to as Emperor as soon as their reign starts. Hence Emperor Meiji and Showa (Hirohito) was referred to as such during their reigns, as well as after.
This tradition of naming eras and Emperors is alive and well, and we have just entered the new Reiwa (good luck saying that out loud in English lol) Era in April of 2019, with the resignation of the Heisei Emperor Akihito (son of Hirohito). You can watch a recording of the official announcement of the new era name here: ua-cam.com/video/GFU9-8jQ2Nk/v-deo.html
Anyway, I've been browsing through some of your videos and have been enjoying them. Great stuff! I always enjoy commentary on other historical videos and hear what others think about them.

The point that the West had arrived in the East and Japan needed to keep up or fall behind is especially meaningful if you consider what was happening in "behind" regions at that time. If Japan hadn't westernized the nation would have become a colony.
9:20 Part of the problem is the traditions he was trying to keep alive involved maintaining a form of nobility. Samurai represented political and physical power that had stomped on the authority of the emperor for centuries. If the system were permitted to continue and build up it would have been a rival to the central government.
Also I'd like to point out that my Irish roots are happy to see someone sitting on the Union Jack.

In Japan, the emperors are only referred to by 2 different names: Their official title during their reign i.e. "His Majesty the Emperor" (or 天皇陛下, 'Tennō heika' in Japanese), and their posthumous title e.g. Emperor Meiji (明治天皇, Meiji-tennō) or Emperor Showa (昭和天皇, Shōwa-tennō), etc. Their personal name is never used except by themselves (or before their ascend the throne). So I'm not exactly sure why it is mentioned in Sabaton's video as it's an irrelevant side note, really.
