  • Liza Minnelli and Jack Paar trade Judy Garland stories. One odd moment is when Liza tries to compliment Paar on the show he had just done with June Levant and Paar decides to bring up Mrs Levant's husband Oscar's big love affair with Judy Garland. One can only hope June Levant wasn't watching.

The greatest experience of live theater in my life was seeing Judy in her Carnegie Hall show at the Bushnell Auditorium in Hartford, CT, on October 1, 5 days before my 14th birthday. I was an aspiring magician already doing paid shows. When I was 16, I wrote (but unfortunately didn't have the nerve to send) Jack Pear a letter telling him why he should have me on his show. It was his interviews with Judy that made me think he would want to talk to me. I always think of each of them in relation to each other. It's a stunning discussion between her daughter and Paar. Thank you, Buzz.

Interesting comment there, where Liza recalls the kitchen convo with Judy responding, “That’s my business. Sympathy is my business!” It could be interpreted as psychological, or as to how Judy was the smartest one with the last laugh on everyone, who secretly really knew the power of her image and fame. She really was an amazingly intelligent being and force of nature. ❤

Thank you for sharing Buzz. I'm still amazed these treasures keep coming, after a lifetime ago Judy passed.

In all the years since her passing, her children have never uttered a single negative word about her. That’s a legacy in itself growing up in Hollywood. Lucille Ball said that Judy was the funniest natural comedian that she’d ever met.

Liza comes off sincere in her effort to get you to take her view of her past, a past that never existed. I can’t participate. Liza did all she could while Judy was alive in Judy’s last 4 years to stay away from Judy and yet she says now that she was always there. It’s none of my business and it’s okay for Liza not to discuss her mother.

Liza dint tell the bathroom story quite right: Judy wore a boa that she had been given, and the drunk lady waited for Judy to come out of her stall to continue reminding her about the rainbow…and Judy’s exit line was spoken as she tossed the long boa over her shoulder. :)

Paar was never funny. He talks too much and has to let all know he's smarter than you and I.
