- The Burning Platform is joined by Helen Zille this week. She undergoes some grilling by Kanthan Pillay about the DA’s primary focus on South Africa’s political stage. Helen talks about her upcoming vote for Federal Council Chair, and the party’s vision going forward.

I was very excited to hear Helen’s position on why people should vote for the DA. That I had to be exposed to Kanthan’s unhinged, fact-free rant on Russia, BRICS, and China in the process was highly unfortunate

I agree with you Helen, that the DA is upheld to a higher standard than other political parties. One could be flattered by that. The DA is like Novak Djokovich, no matter their achievements, there's still a dislike to them. The DA needs to realize that you can not apply western democracy principles to a largely uneducated citizenry. They need to change the way they communicate to the masses.

Kanthan is very controversial BUT he has sound knowledge about the subject matter when engaging ! Not just butting in , smirking ! She just drives her own agenda and not on facts

Been voting since pre-1994. Have only voted for DP/DA because of their principles. The main one being, as Helen said, that everyone must have the opportunity to be the best that they can be.
The DA is imo the only party that has ever tried to achieve this in SA history. It won't be easy and mistakes will be made. But at least they are trying.

I found that man so very rude. You can get your point across to people without insulting them and just being dam rube about it. People who do that are just bullies. Hellen kept calm and without being rude answered the questions. Also he had such little knowledge of what he was talking about to Hellen and the us dollar. Not impressed with him at all
I agree, he needs to calm his farm. You don’t speak to a lady like that. Although, he can be respected for his foresight in politics.

Kanthan has posed the question the citizens pose. Helen and the DA would be wise to listen to that. From Helens answers I am concerned that she is not in par with BRICS
Kanthan, Ramaphosa and his government is not Modi and his government, nor do they have the influence on the world stage that India has. The US and the West need India more than they need SA. Finally your comment that the DP should recall Ramaphosa after the next elections is a serious concern... Out of the frying pan and into the fire is your proposal.

Phumi, we should not compare to the global picture, we compare to our peers. We are a third world country and it would be foolish to compare our food price inflation to the US/UK etc.

Helen is right in that 'might makes right' is not a valid policy on Ukraine. Kanthan is right in that the DA seems to be shilling for the US which is demonstrated by their selective outrage. Kanthan is also right in that Helen (as much as I admire her) is wrong to muddy the waters with these divisive tweets, which harm the DAs image and are unlikely to attract new voters. I think that, like all people, Helen's ego has run away with her on this one. That said, I'll still vote DA any day of the week because they have a proven track record.
@Helenzille the people dónt know what the DA is about. Why would they otherwise bring it up? It's not only Kanthan. It's very many of us.

kanthan pronounced the word as i know it. unfortunately he used a swear word though - which was best avoided IMHO.

Kanthan is right with what he says. The Ukranian was started 14 years ago. It's not a new thing. America is an invader and trouble maker. He is also right about our politics in SA.

i don’t think what helen said fulfils the definition of a Vision.
it is the articulation of How, when a Vision/Purpose is a What.
the kind of society helen describes is only inspiring if we know what that will deliver.
peace and prosperity, or ‘Freedom, Equality, and Dignity’ as the higher order Constitutional version, is not an ultimate goal.
It is a precursor, a How, of a compelling Vision/Purpose.
Religions are good examples of Vision/Purpose.
For some, the Vision/Purpose after which all else follows, is fundamental transcendence from earthly pain and suffering, which sounds pretty good.
For others, it’s eternal life after physical death, which deals with a fairly common fear of dying, because you don’t.
At the most secular level, it’s things like fulfil your fullest potential, as helen said, but no one knows what that is so it’s too abstract to be compelling.
At the most ideological, it’s capitalist democracy will deliver personal happiness, as promised by the US declaration of independence,
or communal equality as promised by it’s arch enemy.
For a moment, for us, a pre-ANC-failure-social-media-pre-‘post-truth’😂-Nelson Mandela was able to articulate a Vision/Purpose that was deeply compelling.
as i understood it then as i do now, the Vision/Purpose was the we, SA, were going to become the absolute and definitive global leader as the ‘Ultimate Country’.
since deeply inspiring Visions are sustainable in the long term because they are never fully achieved [eg currently run under 2hr marathon or eternal life is unproven therefore remains inspiring], this felt like worth doing, because we were going to become part of something magnificent.
so we got lined up, facing one direction, ready to do that, to fulfil that Vision/Purpose.
we were going to mirror nelson mandela’s own fundamental transformation.
it was clear to see what that was, so we had a ‘reason to believe’.
i’d still go for that Purpose/Vision.
any other version is not worth it.
and when it’s not worth it, we have what we have now:
everyone for themselves, everyone screaming in the market to get your attention, no standout category-of-one contender,
self or ‘tribal’ interests rule.
that’s not going to be overcome with nuance or abstraction.

Don't forget, Russia and China have agreed to trade in Yuan, bypassing the dollar. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Japan, Iran and several more countries are have agreed. (Helen has obviously no clue about geopolitics. She doesn't seem to be know about the Minsk Agreement and how the US/NATO's deliberate violation of it. Merkel has come out recently saying that Germany and France never had any intention of honouring the Agreement. Ukraine has said the same. Russia asked the US over and over again to stop encroaching on its borders.) The war in Ukraine actually began in 2014.

@helenzille, Kanthan is clearly more educated about the US/NATO's attack on Russia, and the growth of the Global South than you are. This is not being conducted by force, as you've intimated. It's come about as a direct response to the US politicising the dollar against Russia. Other countries are sitting up realising that the same tactic can be used against them by the US.
