Murs is one of the most amazing individuals/artists in life. Been a fan since day one and met him at SDCC in 2010 when he came through our booth. Really enjoyed how he described growing up in L.A. (Mid-City) and how the influences of Crips, skateboards, his mom, and natural curiosity shaped who he is. Not a lot of those.convos take.place in other artists music.
I was beaten by my parents as a child and I don't plan to hit my children if/when I become a parent. Nothing good comes out of it. It's abuse, domestic violence, psychologically damaging.. something I only came to face to face with at age 30, but now that I'm facing it, I'm finally overcoming it. It's nothing against my parents, I understand it's a complicated history and world. I think you should bring up this topic with every guest, it's an important discussion.
The fact that Talib was out here in the Bay and LA. And that Mykah was living in NY. I've been following Murs since 97. I still have all my 3MG, Penguin and ComMURShal tapes. So I already knew his story...
"legalize gangbanging" was my favourite part of the discussion. The focus on animosity and violence between the groups is exactly how the world ruler's want it to be, if you could make the focus building up your own business and community you will all come out stronger, which the world ruler's do not want.
UPROXX Video It’s probably because I’m the same age and grew up in a very similar neighborhood situation as MURS, but in SF, they touched on points that are conversations I have with people in my community all the time. The points about living in a system of white supremacy and how it affects us in every way is something I’m mad passionate about talking with people about. I’ve already made people watch parts of it.
The problem with conscious artist is that they want the non conscious artist fans. Be happy with the fans you have because we are the most loyal. The other bs is here today gone tomorrow.
I do not relate to that statement, can you name examples of such artists? If a 'conscious' artist will compromise on their integrity to appeal to a wider audience, I wonder how conscious that artist really is.
@@NordicWildSoul hey hey chill out. Bills have to be paid and unless you can show receipts that you bought tons of albums and merch, you have no say what an artist does to feed their family. On the other hand it depends on how far you go. Lupe does superstar and its not that bad. Jayz does sunshine video and it doesn't work.
It's a business of course, but you're observation is too surface, respectfully. IMO a "conscious" rapper seeks that audience in order to further spread their message(energy). Especially a blk artist going against the industry grain. I'd rather have an artist of that caliber "crossover" than the low frequency trash that's widely accepted.
Skate culture in the 90’s was waaaaay different than today. Skaters were outcasts, nerds, weirdos, misfits, rebels and was not considered cool by anybody who didn’t skate.
Very true the 90s skate culture was sooooo different then what it is today, all skate shit is all mainstream now its not just for the skaters like it use too be

El- P started Def Jux. Mike Posner interned there (fun fact) . I wanted to be on Def Jux. I toured with Yak Ballz and it was like my main goal. Back at the time every rapper who is still around is not like anyone else. 1995-2005 is sort of a time when if you sounded like everyone else, you were whack. If you kept rapping....you are actually some of the few you keep going till this day. Shit is amazing to think about. C Rayz Walz, Aesop Rock, Mr Lif, Cannibal Ox...EL- p is like the Rza of a untold generation. Not many know the stories.
Straight up. In a way it's dope that Def Jux never really popped cause once something becomes too popular it can get corny. We all saw it happen with Strange Music. Shout out to you for knowing the real.
Bigg Jus underrated as hell. I feel he made company flow ...company flow. I also tend to think that El-P is kind of a narcissist. Also Yak Ballz - my claim is such a dope ass track man.
I first saw MURS at a frat house up at CAL where the Journeymen were performing in this small ass room at a party. Tommy sat on a table and it broke. He fell into the lamp, the whole room went dark, and the kept on ROCKING. The whole room went wild. Nothing but pure energy. One of my favorite hip hop memories. Anybody else there that night?
This is one of the most profound and enjoyable interviews I have ever seen! I am a Murs superfan, IMO he is one of the greatest rappers of all time. To see him talk to another late 90s underground OG about so much nerdy backpack rap of the time made my day. And also how personal and profound Murs message is. Much love from London. Thank you for an amazing show.
why? because macklemore was a pop star for 5 years and had fans from ellen degeneres all the way to barack obama what the fuck is so hard to understand ? no hes not technically "better" than talib kweli, but he had millions of dollars to put on a tour and he brought talib with him you mfers are never happy i swear

Best one so far. I'm glad you went into Freestyle fellowship, PB and the Good life cafe. Some of us grew up on that more so than Brotha lynch or Mack 10
Blackalicious is my shit, favorite west coast group. Im a NYer, but been in LA for 5 years and its suprising how many heads never heard of them, or MURS
Thank you both for this conversation!! Shedding light on homophobia was a major important part of this amazing conversation and I appreciate all that you both have done for the culture of Hip-Hop!!
This is an exceptional interview. MURS has so many experiences and it gives him such an arsenal of things to discuss. I wanted this to go on for like 3 or 4 hours.
I was blessed to have both Talib and Murs on my album, two incredible legendary and important MCs. Can’t wait to listen to this all the way through today!!
Holy shit... When Talib started talking about getting older and recognizing others depression it anxiety almost had me crying. Literally went off on my family about this, and it was a main reason why a +10 year relationship ended. Thank you Talib, for recognizing that in your family.
Living Legends! Dope conversation, they brought up a lot of important people that deserve more attention and I hope people research after watching this.
Coming back to work through them and rewatching all these interviews again. Talib is so good at this. His voice was just made for it. Forgot just how good these discussions were ❤
An absolutely fantastic interview. I've been a Talib fan since the Rawkus days. Unfortunately i only started listening to Murs about 2 years ago as i was stupidly reluctant to give the new school MCs a chance apart from the odd few that i happen to come across. (I grew up listening to Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee, Run Dmc & then the golden era MCs). He is such a great artist & an intelligent role model. The guy is so underrated. I put him right up there with the Great Chuck D for dropping knowledge, whether it be on tracks or in interviews
True. Living legends were slept on. All there albums are fuckin classics. Go listen to them. They pretty much created the independent hip hop game after e-40 and too short.
This was awesome.. I remember being in my early 20's living in LA. Living Legends and Mystic Journeymen shows at the El Ray in Hollywood and The Grand downtown.. Sunspot was walkin around with a red wagon full of records and cd's for sale. Hehe. I ran into Grouch and Scarab once on Melrose on the same day. Cool dudes too. Just hangin out, talking about whatever.. I had the Murs Rules The World cd, and he left all the track titles on the back blank.. The cd came with a pen inside the case so u could write your own song names.. How dope is that. This was a special time for me. Now Im 41, and doing alot of life retrospect myself.. All that underground stuff comin out of LA became a big part of who I am. Runnin into the guys from Mission sellin their album on the streets of Hollywood.. They since were forced to change the group name. One of the dudes was named Max and he was hype because I knew who they were. Thats still a great ep.. I remember giving the dude from Anticon a bunch of graffiti stickers, he randomly had stickers too and gave me some. Hehe. Also alot of talented MF'ers performing with Living Legends cru. Elusive and Josh Koslow on the horn.. Myka 9. Self Jupiter.. The energy was dope back then. Some of the best years in my life. This week Ive randomly been going thru all those albums, so watching this interview came at a good time for me. Like I said earlier, Im doing alot of life retrospect at the moment.. I wasted alot of years being a knucklehead and pissin my time away with negative people.. Im now living in Denver which I dont enjoy or feel apart of.. These times and memories of LA 20 yrs ago are the one thing that made any sense to me looking back. Big up and tks for the interview Murs..✌🌴
THIS INTERVIEW WAS EVERYTHING I COULD HAVE IMAGINED AND THEN SOME. SO MUCH SO I HAD TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS. SALUTE TO THESE TWO BROTHERS THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE CONTRIBUTED TO REAL HIP HOP.
What an insightful interview from the beginning till the very end. If I had to pick, I loved the part on how it is to grow up around gangs, and how it is to part with that mindset. Also, how it is to try to appeal to a black audience or just be at peace with whatever audience as long as they respect you. When you have 3 intelligent empathetic people having a real conversation, while the host is really prepared, everything is important. I listened to all of it in one go.
Incredible interview I literally was listening to Murs the other day and just thought to myself that he has aura that surrounds him and that he's a Black Buddah Monk lol now I see this and it might be true. This is exactly what black American community needs. Thank you guys for taking responsibility for your culture
Funeral for a Killer by Murs is the only song I've ever heard of its type. It's just strange how he makes you feel sympathy and pain for a killer through the eyes of his family and friends. Never felt that way before. Bummer and banger of a song.
super insightful loved this interview with two of my favorite lyricists, I grew up on Kweli and Murs both have bangers and I always knew these dudes were smart and had great head on their shoulders big ups "this is Lennox Lewis, Heavy Weight Champion of the World, just like Kweli and Hi-Tek Sing Big Up!!"
MURS!!!! 24 hours w/a G! Your music introduced my white ass to the MJ's/Living Legends. Met you on the bus in Eureka via Aesop(Fresno kids). It was my 10th Legends show, 1st time you were there. Best show I've been to. Point is I buy your tickets regardless of who is there. I prefer your solo shows. Mad love.
So many topics they touch on, I have a real appreciation for this interview. This is why hip hop is so special, you took me on a journey Talib with Murs.
I love Murs, met him a few times he’s super nice. Dude even sent me a free copy of fight night 3 when he was promoting it and we boxed online. Such a chill person.
I appreciate y'all keeping the white emcee phenomenon in perspective. As a white rapper (not necessarily an emcee because my stuff is all written still), this is something I get pretty self-conscious about on the regular. It helps to know that the conscious side of the game has some sympathy for my internal battles. The more allies you have in a struggle like that, the easier it becomes to spit truth uncolored by egotism, which I think is really close to the root of all racism to start with. When you're out of your ego, you see people as people. That kind of perception doesn't really allow for dehumanization unless there is some real fucked up neurochemistry going on, which unfortunately there is a lot of times. So maybe it's not the root, but it definitely seems like a big contributor. I don't know shit, but I appreciate y'all.
I love Felt(2 us my favorite, Ants production is amazing and Slug and Murs bring some heat) but 3:16 is one of my favorite albums as well, he'll anything Murs and 9th put out is amazing. So either Felt 4 or another Murs and 9th album, I'm looking forward to it.
Fun Fact all my playlists have always Had either one of these Greats hahaha your connection extends further than what you guys thought. Loved this convo.
Oh shit!, Murs was at the Foundation?!?! I've spent more than a few nights there with some of the prodigious folks that went on to greatness. 2 of my favorite MC's sharing insights. Love it.
First he hip hop evolution ep... Then peoples party!!!! Great double dose.... Also I now feel bad for asking MURS a question after his panel at SDCC LOL
I Not sure how it happen but I found Murs about 4 weeks ago and DAMN yea I'm from the "Golden age" of rap era and he right up there with the ole school and I can really understand what he is saying lol and my favorite is "Unicorn Glitter". Murs is like the "Childish Gambino", "Speech", and "TuPac" rolled into one
Yo! We gotta revisit the whoopings bc I learned while raising my sons that for us it's not the move. That also gave us something special: I apologized to them. Tho I wish I'd never spanked them at all it was big that they saw authority figure be accountable to them.
💪🏾🖤✊🏾 RESPECT ⚔️ HONOR !!! These past two Murs & 9th wonder albums have been amazing... Big Up Jose 🙌🏾 Two amazing emcees talking STR8 Hip Hop 🙏🏾 Gratitude ✨
I love how this hip hop interview became a reflection on how we parent our kids. I truly feel a little better at navigating the discipline of my kid. + YangGang...haha
Great show! Mad props to Kweli and Murs. Been a longtime fan of both y'all! Murs' work with Slug etc.. is dope. BUT, I really dig his solo albums more! I hope to see Kweli work with my bro Ruste Juxx on a joint or two. That'd be crazy!! Ruste and I been building on some shit for years now.
Kweli I love you bro! Ever since I heard Some Kind of Wonderful I been following your career. Top 10 dead or alive, conscious rap changed my life and you were one of the leaders.

I love all of the People's Party shows but I think this might be my favorite. Great conversation.
Murs is such a fucking OG bro wow, he did so much for the West. that on the train/in the lowrider analogy was crazy.
I had zero expectations. Great interview. I'm supposed to have been asleep but I wouldn't have minded this going another hour or more.

Hell yeah man. Enjoy that discography.
