    Not saying there's no benefit to this but the discussion seems pretty unscientific. Calisthenics, the same as every other kind of exercise, will only build muscle if the movements are sufficiently challenging, so if you're already decently strong it will be much harder to build muscle with only your body weight. Getting super jacked isn't everyone's goal so that's fine, but also no type or quantity of exercise will make you lean if you're not also eating the proper amount.

    • @Strengthside
      @Strengthside  2 місяці тому +33

      You must have not listened to the video clearly. Maybe you just read the title? I didn't say Calisthenics makes you lean. It gives you a reason to be lean because of relative strength.
      And if you're "already strong" there's always a weight vest.

    • @aperson9847
      @aperson9847 2 місяці тому +4

      @@Strengthside I did watch it. Your conclusion was that calisthenics and animal movements help you build muscle and stay lean, and that's not inherently wrong. Doing any kind of movement will have some effect on this depending on how challenging it is, but I have beef with any/all promises of weight loss that don't also mention diet, which is the most important part. You can't expect to lose weight by crawling around on the ground (or doing any other kind of movement) if you're also eating seven Big Macs for dinner every day. And if I'm being honest I've got no idea what you mean by "it gives you a reason to be lean".
      And sure, as you build muscle you will increase your weight (if you're eating enough) and add challenge to the movement, but it'll take a comparatively massive amount of time to add five pounds of body weight to your pushup than it would to add five pounds in plates to your bench press. So like I said, it'll be much harder and slower to gain muscle only using body weight.
      Again I'm not saying that there's nothing useful here, I definitely see the overall health benefit of functional movement that you likely wouldn't get from lifting. Rear delt cable flys or whatever don't have huge practical application in real life lol. But in terms of weight loss and muscle gain specifically there's nothing magical about bodyweight exercise. It's the same exact biological mechanism as weightlifting, just less effective because it's less challenging.

    • @Strengthside
      @Strengthside  2 місяці тому +25

      @@aperson9847 your making correct points for sure but you may be missing my point.
      I'm not saying there's any inherent "weight loss" built into calisthenics movements.
      What I mean by "gives you a reason to be lean" is that if you want to increase your pullups by 5 reps... or develop a muscle up, it gets way more challenging if you pack on 10 lbs.
      But if you want to increase your rear delt cable flies or bench press by 10 lbs... it gets much easier if you pack on 10 lbs of bodyweight. no reason to stay lean.
      I'm not saying one is better than the other, and to your point... building muscle may be easier by adding weight. But if you like to stay lean... calisthenics give you a better reason to.
      It's more of a philosophical point than a "how to lose weight"
      Rest assured that if I make a video on losing weight or fat loss... diet will be mentioned.

      The best approach is consistency and intensity. Also understanding the balance between variation and mastery. Mastering something like calisthenics or bodybuilding is very important, but not skipping movements is also very important. The pushups u do at the start are such a great example. I thought i trained everything considering i train my godamn tibialis starting out not moving and only playing video games. But forgetting my serratus got me costocondritis and unable to fix shoulder pain without knowing the cause (trained my upper back so much). Then i tried training my serratus consistently and voilah everything is so amazing now.

    I’m truly grateful for others to share this knowledge of how to be *fully embodied* a physical freedom, *by being connected to the body* in movement and *fun!*.

    It's no wonder that the word callisthenics combines the words "beauty" (kállos) and "strength" (sthenos). The physiques that Greek statues have are all from callisthenics and lifting odd objects.

    Functional athleticism! Do we lift/exercise to simply build size? If so, there are ways to optimize this. AS I have aged, the key for me is can I do the activities I want to do more easily- ski, swim, surf, hike in mountains, bicycle, tennis, walk the dogs on the beach (in sand), etc. This is what is most important to me now- so I focus on “training” that will best accomplish this. Body weight, calisthenics, heart rate, yoga- these work best for me. LOVE THIS CHANNEL and the wisdom (common sense) you provide. 🙏🏽

    I think Animal/Primal Flow and some functional movements like walking, jumping, rolling,climbing and hanging is really all you need to feel and look amazing. I started AF last year, for me it is difficult because I lack pretty much everything like condition, balance and muscles, am a little overweight and also have poor posture atm so I start with a very short light dance/walking workout 3-5 min, then do my daily 5 min back-training/recovery app and only after that I play around with animal flow and stop if a joint is hurting badly. it is the entire “life Style”

    what not even to think
    The PAIN-Reward Pattern in the Auto Pilot
    that drives us for Over Rewarding
    and Fear Panick
    when the Reward is not instantly here
    takes intense Endurance training to reset that Balance
    and train GRATITUDE to be here
    without any reward at all

    For 7 years I did bodybuilding and one day I realized it's an embarrassment to just look good and suck ass at functionality and athleticism. Your vids have really helped me

    There’s no such thing as building “lean muscle”. You’re just gaining muscle. You’re in a state of three possibilities when talking about muscle growth: gaining muscle, maintaining muscle or losing muscle.
    You gain muscle the fastest with progressive overload.
    Exercise based on your body weight has its limits. You’ll only gain to the point where your body has adapted to your current weight. That’s all your muscle will grow to! In order to get bigger you’ll need to add weight to progress.
    To be lean you’ll need to do cardio or limit calorie intake.

      you're technically right, but what josh is selling is a combination of strength exercises and movement that when done with a decent diet allow a person to get strong for their bodyweight and not look bulky like a bodybuilder or powerlifter.

    being lean has nothing to do with your workout routine. love your channel but I'm so sick of ppl saying cali makes you lean, any form of hypertrophy/resistance training will build lean muscle and appearing lean is in your diet. am i straight up wrong about this? too late im already mad ):

    • @Strengthside
      @Strengthside  2 місяці тому +1

      Your missing the point. It's not that calisthenics exercises "make you lean". If you listen to what I say in the video it's that calisthenics movements are based on your "relative strength" In order to become stronger, say increase your pullups from 8-12 or develop your muscle up... you need to stay at a low enough bodyweight to do so. It gives you a reason to stay lean. And that's why most advanced calisthenics athletes are well built with low bodyfat percentage

    Center of mass, not gravity. Not quite as pedantic, as you might think. Otherwise, great vid.
