All of them, adapting to the terrain and my fatigue, I even ride with the motor off to get a good workout every now and then. Ebikes are awesome!, great video as always, happy trails:)
On my Turbo Levo, eco for city streets getting to the trails, eco on the trail for flat bits and moderate climbs, and trail for the steeper and longer climbs. I haven't needed turbo for any trail in Pleasanton ridge regional park. I decreased the assist in both eco and trail a little bit so that they match my needs on the trails I ride.
I constantly shift trough modes from off to eco to trail to boost and back depending on the situation. It´s almost like a second shifter to me. I use quite a lot of off-mode, especially in the beginning of a ride when I´m energetic.
My LBS lent me an ebike for the afternoon and I took it up the hills and along the cliffs here, and this is exactly what I used it for, helping me get up hills rather than blasting along on the flat or downhill. Going to buy an ebike on the back of that ride as while I love my normal bike, getting up on the hills with it from my home is brutal and not fun.
I ride a Yamaha motor and I love the 5 levels. I use Eco 80% of the time. I pop it into higher modes as needed but go back to eco immediately. I use the motor as a front derailleur and I'm very active on the gears ' I'm a rider, eco lets me have 40 yr old legs as a 60* rider.
Mode is a very individual thing and relates to rider health/fitness and the kind of terrain you want to ride at a reasonable speed. My point is young bucks like Steve and Chris can have fun in lower modes but older folks like me with a lung disease (although I’m quite fit considering) means I’m nearly always on anaerobic threshold, so I invariably ride Turbo or Sport on trail, trying to use sport but using turbo to switch from aerobic exercise to anaerobic. The consequence of course is much reduced range and the standard 500Wh battery on my Bosch gives me from 15 to 30 miles max range depending on the season and the usual variables. Were I to attempt lower levels I simply would have no fun. I can just manage out of interest Tour mode on flat tarmac, Eco I may as well buy an antique bike!
6:23 "I think more people need to fall back in love with Eco Mode". Well said as many of us First Generation e mtn bikers are thrilled to stretch our horizons. After few months I'm able to pedal with high speed without any assist at all and than I'm working out like he'll with 10 kg on top 😁 but if I only have 1 h or something and want to have fun in the forests i use turbo and enjoy the endorphins 😎 all those haters have never used ebike claiming that its for lazy people. I pretty much ride trial mode(set to HIGH in e-tube) 100% of the time on my Shimano e8000 equipped e160 900E. Boost is just to much(not more power, but kicks in to early) - I never use it. But when I go for the occasional ride with a non e-rider, I use eco. And after some time you get used to it and I agree that in some ways it can be better than trail - but I always come back to trail mode :-)
My ebike, battery gauge is not linear, so 10% battery remaining, is more like 10 minutes and then tugboat bike time. I suspect most bikes have this potential problem, I've been ebiking for over 2 years, so my observation is not shallow minded.
Today I did 93km route with 920m of climbing and was left with 2 of 5 bars (3rd bar went off literally at the end)! And that on 500wh battery with Shimano E8000 motor combo. And 50% of the route was on macadam. Needless to say I did big part of the route with motor off and I used only Eco mode (I almost never use Trail mode, Boost literally never). I knew I was saving the battery little bit more than needed for this route but I like and need to spend energy and put in the effort so I rode all the flat sections with motor off. First bar went off after first 15km, which was mostly rough macadam ascent, I also did part of it without motor. But then second bar lasted till 65th kilometer, so I did 50 kilometers on second bar! I could not believe it! :) And the third bar lasted for the last 30km. When I get the second battery that will be amazing, I will be doing crazy epic rides. And then I remember how I did many mtb routes with 2000+ meters of climbing in a day on my regular mtb, some of which were on rough macadam roads. But it is no longer fun, I enjoy ebike much more now, riding is so much more dynamic and fun
Aleksandar Gospić what’s the point in having a e-bike if your only riding in eco and some times off??? What’s the point just buy a normal mountain bike at the same price better spec lighter weight and better for descending???
Have been a fan of the channel right from the start despite only took delivery of my first Ebike yesterday (a Specialized Turbo Levo). Looking forward to getting out and seeing what it can do.
I use Eco by default so that I get a good workout along with some support from the motor. Its amazing how much battery I have left when others are running low on charge
I have a levo and use it in eco all the time. And only use it at 40/40. And its been wet out so it drains the battery with pedaling through the sludge. I,only use turbo to get up,super steep climbs or over rock garrdens to keep up momentum. And use either trail or turbo at the end of the day to get back,to my truck!
I set up my e8000 to high on eco, Medium in trail, and low on boost. Still only rarely need boost, and I have more medical excuses for riding an e bike than the dwp.
@@tshepp999 Thats a different system - Giant have tuned the yamaha system to their own spec for their bikes and called it syncdrive. I dont have a PW-X so cant comment.
Please remember that a lot of older bikers , need turbo to save the knees on the hills . rest of the ride on normal . eco is not an option for everybody .
I think in terms of speed going uphill even the best components with a normal rider wont beat a normal rider on a mid range e-bike. The better suspension should pay off going downhill tho.
Are you starting with the same amount of total battery? Please give more info. 100% of 400 is half as much as 100% of 800. 9% use and 19% use of your batteries might be identical use, depending on your battery capacities.
I have just had a software update done on my Trek Powerfly, gives you lots of information especially about how long I have spent in each mode...Eco 44%, Tour 6%, EMTB 48% and Turbo 2%
Ive got a Merida e160 900 , i try to stay in eco as much as possible touching trail in some ups, id rather use less battery over a 2-3hr 28km loop as not drawing the battery to flat will extend its life. Ive been getting 22-28kms 900mtr acceding and descending on one bar of battery.
I am using Turbo when I commuting to not get to warm. When I'm riding technical tracks eco is the best, because the other modes is to fast and jerky. I think the new lighter motors with smaller battery is more practical because to days e-bikes are way to heavy.
It would have good to have added rider weights and factored in the power levels that both run on. With Mission app you could have matched the power and torque loads of the haibike on the Kenevo and gained a more accurate comparison. I rode a 500 whr Levo on the South Downs this week did 30 miles, 95% off road and 3600 feet of climbing on a single charge. I weigh 74kgs.
Here's a question about recharging. Is it better to run the battery down before recharging? What if you ride 2 days in a row and day 1 you use 30%. Should you recharge for day 2? I guess what I'm asking....is at what percentage do you recharge or not recharge? Also, I'm assuming short or small percentage charges are counted in the charge cycle life of the battery. Tks
Dave Nawahine battery’s last longer in cycles if you dont draw them to flat .. less you take out and recharge the better, you will get more life and better punch from the battery keeping it topped up.
If starting at 100 percent I would use for 2 days. But i only top up to 80 percent so in my case i would charge each day but only back from 50 to 80. One full charge cycle is actually 3.5 of these types of charges like i do and your battery lasts 2x longer compared to charging or draining fully. Battery university web site confirms this.
No need to run down before recharge - there is no memory effect. For long term storage it is better to keep the battery at 40-60% charge. Don't store the battery for a long time at 0 or 100%. Lots of info: batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/do_and_dont_battery_table
Hello Steve and Chris! Most mtb brands have at least one ebike model to offer, but do you have any idea why would two of the most desirable mtb brands out there like Yeti and Santa Cruz resist to produce a proper emountain bike?? It seems like they are falling behind in this growing mtb segment. Cheers!
Hi chaps. Just got the wife a Cube Access Race 500 but she’s only tiny (4’11) and I want to fit a dropped. But most won’t go far into the frame as it has a kink. Any ideas what dropper has the shortest insert length???
'Levo Kenevo' 🤔 sounds familiar. Wasn't that the guy who unsuccessfully tried to jump the Grand Canyon ?And was into jumping over buses on a motorbike?
I have a 2019 Giant trance sx E1 pro..the Canadian version. I ride predominantly in eco....which apparently is already at 100% assistance...in my opinion too much to be regarded as eco...should be half that...it's just too much of a boost. Maybe someone can enlighten me on a way to dial it back somehow. The other levels of assistance....while fun..are kind of overkill unless you live in a mountainous area.
Giant ride control app allows tuning of eco down to 75 or 50%.........app can be a little finicky but have found if i have bluetooth and location on it works fine.
Im_ChuckY_Bitxh The Kenevo has a more powerful set up than the Haibike in general, meaning that each mode is going to be different between the two no matter which one you choose. I have a Levo & love it, however I have experimented with changing from the standard power modes as I felt I didn’t need as much assistance in each. I highly recommend having a play with this yourself as you can set it up exactly as you like. Happy riding, the Kenevo is a beast...enjoy it
"I will buy expensive ebike to ride in eco mode" said noone ever. The main reason why people buy ebikes is to help you to get to the top easy, if you want to pedal, buy cheaper and lighter normal bike.
Does anyone know the long term lifespan of an ebike battery? Are they anything like phone batteries that barely last through the day after 6 months of use?
Mine is 3 years old and only a little less storage than at the beginning. I rarely do long rides and have done about 1800 miles. I use it for town rides as well so don't pay for petrol then or get caught in jams.
Worth reading the technical details about battery charge percentage which shows how battery cycle life is affected by percentage charge. www.bike-eu.com/home/artikel/2019/08/starting-up-e-bike-battery-production-in-vietnam-10136264
It is measured in charge cycle count. If you ride and charge every day (like the phone), then yes, you will reach 500 cycles in 1.5 years. See batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
Ive got a quality 17.5ah...samsung cells..recharged it over 150 times in 2 years. Still does Llandegla black twice in full turbo mode. (Its not called turbo..just assist 9)
ECO? Only with a tail wind...but then I live in the Cairngorm Mountains not the South Downs or Norfolk....It's Tour (Bosch) minimum otherwise what's the point? 2 batteries (and just 2.7kg extra) for double distance/altitude....I killed 1 bar of my Bosch 500wh battery in 3km yesterday....That was an 882m mountain from 250m and back down in a total of 1 hr and 8 mins over 19km.... most of you will never truly "Mountain bike"...it's my back yard
Disappointing to hear yet another undeserved comment by Chris at the 3.24 point of the clip in respect of mountain bikes. Afraid that this one gets a thumbs down. Skip the childish comments when making the clips, you just loose credibility. I also recall that you got very stroppy when a viewer referred to their mtb as being authentic, so why add fuel to the name calling fire. It's pretty simple, as there are only two references that need be made... MTB and eMTB.
The e-bike fits in our time. The children are brought to school by car, go shopping by car and move as little as possible on their own. On the other hand, 70% of the people in America are too fat, they suffer from many diseases unlike our ancestors, who moved more. I myself am 70 years old and still drive 10000 km by road bike every year, because as a scientist I do not move much at work to stay fit. E-bikes are only for very sick and disabled people. Normal people should buy a bike without an engine to stay fit.
What do you mean by “normal people”? As a scientist you may have a formula that determines “normal people”. Age, ability, health, location, wealth, enjoyment, variety, and technique seem like some of the factors that you could consider for a formula. Perhaps some are blessed with a dominate gene that helps us make choices...on our own. When I’m 90, and you’re 100, fitness may not be as much of a factor as fun. Viva la difference, eh!
I am 70 years old and still drive 10000 km of racing bike every year. E-bikes are only for very old and sick or disabled people. E-bikes are okay for these people. But if someone is healthy, he should drive a bike without an engine. Unless he is too lazy and wants to make himself comfortable.
LOL, spandex Nazi thinking he is a big man riding his expensive road bike. Thinks he is actually fit relative to other riders on common mountain bikes. Does not even know his expensive racing road bike gives him 100W+ advantage over other guys on common bikes. Thinks he is the man and "fit". I've seen fat spandex guys with a gut going fast on these expensive road bikes probably like you thinking they are the shit. I would love for one of you guys to stop me and tell this to my face. I really would. The debate would be funny as hell.
@@feedallday2556 Why do you call me Nazi? Because I'm a german, healthy and slim and fit? This is envy, but it is well known that envy is another form of recognition. Your language needs getting used to. I feel sorry for you.
Karl Decathlon for me when others tell others what to do, to ride or what sport to do etc... they are not mentally stable and not much happy also... so maybe u think u are superman but your biking is causing you already some kind of anxiety... just get an ebike and save yourself those cloudy days in your mind, you will see, you will come back home more happy and relaxed then when u overdo on normal bike and then you have to sit at internet and pretend how normal biking doesnt affect your body in negative way especially at your age ;)
@@videosuchen It is because you tell others what to do and how to feel. I can do 40 pull ups full up and down in my prime (this is 99.999% of people) and run 10 miles+ in sandals like the running tribe of Mexico. I don't tell bicyclist to get off the common paths and trails and run instead. I didn't know you were German never meant to imply that. Just let people do what they want to do. Cyclist on road bikes have no idea the advantage they have over other bicyclist in terms of watt efficiency; there is no doubt that it takes fitness to be a good cyclist but don't even think two people at same fitness level, one on road bike and one of common mountain bike/ebike in low power/manual, has even the same speed potential as a road bike. I bet you never even knew that; think you are "fit". Okay, man.
@@tristazmista Man needs movement, as the evolutionary history of man shows. Why are so many Americans too fat, mentally ill, like the president? Partly because they move too little and eat too much and hunt too much for the money. I am mentally and physically healthy, slim and fit because I ride a bicycle. Everyone can do what he or she wants in a free country. See America as a role model. I do not tell anyone what to do. Main thing he is happy. If you're happy with your e-bike you'll let me know that I'm happy with my bike without an engine and certainly I am not mentally unstable.

@chris: Which missioncontrol settings did you use in eco mode ?
He said the default which I think is 35/35
Do you turn the motor off coming down
I never take mine off turbo....but then again I only use my EMB on road
Why do you never testing giant ebikes?
Finally I got it black on white Kenevo eats battery like crazy... I regret buying a Kenevo 2018 :(
Im_ChuckY_Bitxh The Kenevo has a more powerful set up than the Haibike in general, meaning that each mode is going to be different between the two no matter which one you choose. I have a Levo & love it, however I have experimented with changing from the standard power modes as I felt I didn’t need as much assistance in each. I highly recommend having a play with this yourself as you can set it up exactly as you like. Happy riding, the Kenevo is a beast...enjoy it
@@Marf83 man idk i set it up but i never getting over 35-40km with eco... But I will try changing more.
"I will buy expensive ebike to ride in eco mode" said noone ever. The main reason why people buy ebikes is to help you to get to the top easy, if you want to pedal, buy cheaper and lighter normal bike.
Yeah, I guess they should buy your expensive ebike instead. LUL
Well I said that and my brother said that, too. Higher modes are used for hard climbs.
👍👍👍 TRILHAS GERAIS
I ride eco all the time i get 86km range at 16.7kmph
I always use a combination between 0 to 100% motor support based on terrain , etc.
Did Steve cut his jersey by himself?
Eco only
just wondering if ive ever seen chris not manualing rollers lol
Charge it..smash it.
I'm that full face, spare battery looney from one of your vids.
Why do they use miles if they are British? I thought only Americans are still into it..
