Thank you so much for clarifying "Roll your shoulders blades DOWN and away from your ears." I always thought that cue meant to draw both scapulas down your spine causing depression. Now I know!
Thank you for a VERY good explanation and demonstration. The fact that you go through the names of the bones and rotation directions gave me confidence that you know what you are teaching. First time I could really be sure what inward rotation is because you explained all the directions. Thanks 🙏
Oh, my god, Cathy, THANK YOU. This has been THE MOST helpful explanation for shoulder positioning in downward dog. After five years of practicing yoga, I finally understand exactly what needs to be done. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I do have a request though--would it be possible to make a video where you can explain how people with hyperextension should be tackling arm rotation in downward dog? I have hyperextension and my elbows sometimes end up taking a lot of heat during downward dog. When I flex my arms, my elbows are automatically turned out and upper arm rotation is hard to understand. Adriene also did a video where she explained that we should have a microbend in the elbows but once again, I don't understand how that would work. I can't seem to find a clear and precise conceptual and visual explanation for this. You have explained this so well, I feel you'd also be able to provide some much needed clarity on hyperextension. Namaste.
So helpful. I've been trying to figure out the whole shoulder position. Now I get it. I tried the '"don't s" and and then the correct way, and I can feel the difference! Thank you 🙏
Thank you! I would love more of these please, I often wonder which muscles I am supposed to be engaging specifically or which way to rotate them etc.! Very helpful!
Thank you for explaining the shoulder movement during this most practiced pose. I've been looking for a clear explanation for months. Your visual examples of right and wrong was extremely helpful.
Thank you for explaining that I've been trying to be more aware of the role of the different joints and muscles of the shoulder and this video helps me visualize and understand better
Thank you for the insightful video on shoulder rotation in Downward Dog. I largely agree with the actions described. However, my biomechanics instructor has a different perspective. He asserts that in Downward Dog, internal shoulder rotation is crucial. He believes it helps with pushing through the hands and prevents excessive weight on the wrists while also enhancing spinal extension. According to him, a neutral pelvis might lead to spinal flexion rather than extension, so he recommends anterior pelvic rotation with the sitting bones pointing upward. I’d appreciate your thoughts on this alternative approach. Thanks!
!amazingly distinguished I have upper back pain and in yoga class Tutors have yet explained downward facing dog in a way I could totally understand Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching and your feedback! Yes it's so true, part of my approach is if I hear something without the why I go research it or pull from my experience teaching yoga and share what I find!
Thanks so much. You're very clear in explaining the movements and their names. I've been researching this quite a lot and never had such an a good example to see and really understand. After incorrect position I hurt my back, and I can see now how I did it. Thanks so much, I can go back to yoga :)
I’m an experienced teacher and today I heard a teacher in class say “turn the inside of your elbows back, press into the L shape of your hands”. It felt ok, but is the opposite of what I teach (external rotation as you keep that strong engagement when you float forward). So here I am researching online!
You are truly a gift for Yoga practitioners. Thank you for your excellent explanations! 🙏 I just found your channel, subscribed and shared! Thumbs up 👍
Thank you! No wonder I had so much trouble with this pose. I tried the details you gave here, and I could feel my heart resting. It was amazing! I did a few rounds of sun salutations, and there was a quality of flow and ease that I'd never felt before. I'm looking forward to watching your How to Step Forward video. :-)
Hii Cathy, thanks for such a detailed explanation. I wish to know that after getting into the pose whether we do the normal breathing in and out of the abdomen or chest?
Very clear and precise explanations! Thank you very much! Perhaps you have already explained it previously in another video. If so, I apologize. If not, could you please explain or develop, for this same exercise, the position of the hips, the angle that the torso and legs should form, as well as whether or not the soles of the feet should fully touch the floor? Once again, thank you so much for this and other carefully made videos!
Wish I’d seen this a month ago. Got real nerve pain on my right shoulder blade, from always pinching down and in, thinking it was flattening my back. 🤕 Hoping some rest will sort it out 🙏
I have a serious permanent shoulder injury and have been looking for an alternative as I can’t have pressure on the shoulder and have between 30 and 45 degree mobility but like the stretch this pose gives my ankles and legs, can you help?
I just started yoga and have had persistent pain all up and down my shoulder blades. Feels super deep in the muscles, very tight "hot" knots, I can trace them along my shoulder blades. All I've done is restorative and yin yoga, so what the heck! Maybe I'm holding downward dog incorrectly, I'll try out these tips. Are there other Yin poses that could cause so much muscle strain for several days after class??
Dear person reading this let's love one another in this world to beyond a gazillion times and beyond that and beyond that and beyond that and beyond that and beyond that!😀

Yeah it's so tough when people out there are saying the exact opposite, but that is how we learn from that dialectic, right? Thank you for sharing!!
Wow, so helpful. Thanks !

Hi, could you do a video in correcting rib flaring in down dog. Thanks 🙏🏽
Thanks for the request! I'll add it in to my list!

So I guess that's the basis for handstands
Yes! Shoulders in elevation and humerus bone in external rotation!
This was great, moralise this please!
