Dear Chris, I want to show my wife the Vedder River, from Vancouver which exit does one take just to park near the river and walk around?? Any help would be appreciated!!
Hi! Exit the highway at Vedder rd and continue through the town till you get to the crossing bridge. There is a parking lot there on the right, and a beautiful trail.
Just wondering on what do you look for in the water (in terms of reading the currents) of where to cast? Or can you actually spot the schools of fish in the water? Whats a salmon travel path like in rivers
Often you can see the fish and thats alot of fun, but in this case we couldn't see them so we work our way from casting close to shore going a little further out with every cast. Often the springs are swimming in the seam that separates the faster water from the slower water. If you rewatch this video you can see that when I hooked that spring my cast was further away than the previous cast, the fish was just waiting there.
I scouted it last week, there were only Sockeye. But I don't like taking chances upsetting the 1st nation's. May just fish from the other side this year.
@@bugpumper No. That's the problem. You have to access FN land for a lousy 500 ft or so to get across the footbridge...the map was in reference to showing that where you were fishing and caught the red spring...technically that's not FN...but there's no safe way to get there except via the FN road/bridge (river is uncrossable there from otherside)...I spoke to the chief brenda wallace and she's "uncooperative" for any permission or exemption..hell i'd even pay $100 a year for a pass lol
When fishing for red springs throughout July would u say most of the fish are still lower in the vedder or have they already moved up to the bigger pools
Hi LT, usually we start getting them mid July but last year we got our first around July 7th. And in the saltwater with no retention allowed I've been releasing some nice red springs, pure torture!
Hi Alex, I use 14lb myself with 12 lb leader for springs. If you have a really good rod with an even bend throughout the whole length like a Sage for instance you can use lighter line. There's nothing wrong with using 20lb though.
@@alexanderlindsey4066 If you are a new fisher and don't want to spend too much, get any 10'6 rod like a Shimano convergance if they still make those. If you live in Vancouver go to PACIFIC ANGLER on Broadway near Main st. Jason or Matt or any of the guys really know thier stuff and will sell you a great rod . Just tell them what you really want and they will treat you well.
@@bugpumper I'm new at chinook fishing, but I've caught other salmon species. I have a 20 - 40 lb centerpin rod which Im sure will do the job but seems comically heavy, and a 10-17lb baitcaster. Is that a little light? I just don't see how someone could reel in a big chinook in faster flows like a lot of the Cap or the vedder.
@@alexanderlindsey4066 I would stick with the reel but get a lighter rod. 15- 25 is fine. Just don't fish fast water, thats for flossers. Fish the walking speed water with roe and keep your weights off the bottom.
Not a good idea I think, thats what you see people do when they are new fishers. Too many people do that and then run back to shore to then notice that its a wild fish that they just dragged up on the rocks. You have a reel on your rod, use it!! Never, Never, walk back and drag the fish out.
Hey bud! I saw you on the vedder last month for sure! You're the one who teach me a lil bit of how to cast a centerpin ! Thanks a lot!
Great video
One of my favourite spots right there
where abouts? vedder xing?

For red spring do you tend to fish stationary or always moving like steelhead. Thanks
Hi! I definitely move around, looking for a spot where they usually show themselves rising and splashing.
@@bugpumper 👍. Are they constantly moving ?
10:13 that's my spot Chris lol. You think we'll be able to get there this year? you know why....soo -wah-lie

Love this video, just wondering would salmon roe bags work as well for this fishery?
they work really well, make them about loonie sized.
@@bugpumper Awesome, thanks for the reply. Subbed
@@stefanmarkovic8197 see you out there!
@@bugpumper Oh one more question, any tips or tricks when targeting sockeye? Appreciate it
@@stefanmarkovic8197 I find that the smaller roe bags get the sockeye, and also fish closer to the slower water.

hi! It changes every year but I usually start in the lower river if it's not too high.
Hi Chris ! Another great clip ! When do the red springs run ?

What stength mainline mono do you run on your centerpin for chinook in rivers? Is 20 lb mainline enough?

At what weight rods is ok to use? I'm just scared my gear isn't tough enough for a spring in faster water.

Is that a Kingpin Reel? How do you like it?
Tyson that is an excellent reel, fast pick up and smooth casting and drifting, plus its a work of art!!
Is it worth going for red spring the first week of July
yes if the water levels are fishable. Often it's too high for the first week or two. Good luck!
@@bugpumper thanks you too
What salmon are in the Vedder right now
Hi Cole, these Spring Salmon are finishing up now.
In another month we will get the fall Springs and Coho returning. Good luck out there!
Chris's Vancouver fishing journal. Thanks man keep posting these videos at the Vedder and keep me updated on how the fishing is.
what kind of bait were you using?
Hi CoreTurbo, we were using steelhead roe.
Also are they still running
Yes but only a few left. Wait a month for the fall springs and coho.
Are you fishing near the big bridge
@@funfishing6485 in this video yes, but most times almost anywhere.
Hey where is this on the vedder river
Without sending you to the exact spot..its mid river.
Thanks for making this video also is this near the bridge oh also are you flossing them or are you actually catching them
We never floss, always bait, fished above the bottom. No dragging weights either.
It bugs me you can just buy a license without knowing the rules and regulations . You know what I'm talking about .
no, what are you talking about? I know that alot of guys out there can't tell the species apart or if its a keeper or not if thats what you mean.
@@bugpumper A basic test should be required before handing out a license. Such as how to identify a hatchery vs a wild .
You know you could always back up when you hook up on a fish in a spot like that.. I'm surprised a lot of people don't do it? Easy way to land a fish.

Mske sure to handle sockeye more carefully
