It's crazy how far they'll let you push Lae'Zel. Convince her to use Illithid Powers. Convince her to use the Astral Tadpole. All of that convincing is for the good of her people...and then you can convince her to throw it all away??? Yeah, I'm sorry, but if you're going to kill Orpheus, that needs to be a hard line that Lae'zel won't cross. You need to lose her at that point I think.
yes, 100% agree. She's a great character and comes off with such a strong personality, and some convincing I can see...but the systems are far to lenient for her.
I disagree. She is capable of being able to consider saving the world over having her people ruled by a fake Queen. We all are capable of thinking of the masses.
@@CookiesfromHell still... charisma isn't mind control. It's being able to talk and justify things to someone else. Her whole world is destroyed at the end of act 2 due to the incidents at the creche. At her heart, Lae'Zel is a soldier who needs a cause. Saving her people becomes her new cause. Unless you're romancing and can make yourself "her cause" I think killing Orpheus should be the point you have to fight her.
@@TuckBolt And if you succeed a check she says that she understands that only with your help you can stop an elder brain, but after that we're done. So, you can't convince her to let it go, but you can convince her to concede that it's the best option for now.
Don't forget the sex% speedruns. You can also bed her in less than 2 mins XD
I love how shadowheart is just there like: I got my own problems y’all do whatever you want
Yeah, I was disappointed by this scene. There should be more texts for this part of the story.
@@chrisblack6258 There are many scenes (most in act 3) where companions should comment on something important. Most hilarious is when you find Ketheric's book about elder brain and its grand design and not even player's character react to reading it. @@mammozdzierzwdupie Yeah you are right. I've noticed that as well. Although it did not bother me that much since the rest of act 2 is pretty cool
Everyone:debate
Shadowheart:😮
If you are romancing her and you turn into a mindflyer, she then at the end game wants to break up with you. You can convince her to reconsider, but she won't be pleased
Funny how in lore, Gheik...I mean Ilithid's most primal fear is a fellow Ilithid that carried its host's memories and traits.
Also soul.
They destroy the tadpoles soul instead of it consuming theirs.
@@trollzynisaacjohan1793makes sense, balduran was a power house before he got turned I'm guessing his soul was too strong and overpowered the tadpole

The Karlach that becomes Illithid AFTER freeing Orpehus and siding against the Empror retains her personality and soul. It's amazing the nuance that's in this game.
Guessing she needs high Approval for that?
In reality this is wrong. After the cutscene you have to speak to Karlach, it is the same
i spoke to karlach after she assimilated orpheus, she's basically the same but she speaks more calmly
the issue is, over time karlach's soul fades. who she was doesn't exist anymore. the telling we live is erased.
Strictly speaking, Karlach is dead when the mind flayer assimilated her. The mind flayer has her memories and, since her personality was strong, thinks it is still her (or at least pretends that it's still her), but it's basically like if someone cut out your brain, copied its memories into another brain, put that second brain into your body, and changed your body entirely. Or if that's too hard, imagine if your PC had its CPU and other internal processors and memory storage removed, had that copied into another set of processors and storage with their own data already present, and put into a heavily-modified casing.
Or to put it another way, Karlach wouldn't have instinctively known how to suck a person's brains out. That's the Mind Flayer.
"If this is the end for me...let ME be the motherfucker who saved the world." That is such a badass-yet-heartbreaking line, by god XD
Nah its pretty cringe.
Reminder that mindflater transformations are 100% fatal and aren’t transformations at all, the parasite is the mindflayer and the host is a temporary meat suit which it consumes. Karlach died here lmao.
@@jamesquinn6662 Hey, why don't *you* go out there and write a smash hit adventure series?
Dealing with Githyanki lich-queen-goddess with Illythid in the party can be a nice idea for an expansion.
If they do that for the expansion, they should bring in the Githzerai. Dak'kon should definitely be a companion since he should have the Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon.
They won't do it. They can't make an expansion because of level cap and overpowering characters.

@@anastaciasheepconsidering in the pen and paper version of dnd you need a party of somewhere between lvl 17-20 characters to take her down it will be bloody difficult
i need an epilogue cutscene showing us after the events of the game, i loved everything but i felt like we should've gotten more conclusion for the ending
Ironically as she keeps her mind this might be the best ending for her. If she stays in Faerun Engine go poof and she dies. If she goes back she is back in the hell she never wanted to set foot in again ever. This way she is at least alive and free.
It is still quite sad that these are all the choices for one of the nicest Companions we have.
when sommeone becoems mindflyer, he destroys his own soul, so no this is the worst
@@nana93106 Not in this case. usually the Tadpole wins and the soul is destroyed but both the Emperor and her are what the Illithids considering the highest heresy, Illithids who keep their self. Because that means the tadpole lost and it's mind was destroyed instead.
Though it seems there is another, kinda better ending anyway.
Spoiler
If you keep Wyll alive, and save his father he will be doomed to Avernus. If She is not in a Relationship with you he will ask Karlach to accompany him which she accepts. This is the only ending where she willingly goes back because she is not alone and will probably kick all sorts of asses together with Wyll.
Karlach is the tragic hero. Larian did a great job writing her to be so likeable that we want to give her the best possible ending but there is none. So we must choose the "least bad" ending for her. And I think everyone will debate Karlach's story arc for a long while on what they feel is best. Great writing by Larian.
@@Shear666 Mind flayers don't have souls. They might have a personality and a 'self' but that's not what a soul is in the setting. This is addressed explicitly in the post credits scene.
Good ol “my mind is free” argument. Becoming a mind flayer is just not good enough. Maybe someone like Omeluum can find a new recipe for their species before she give up to her hunger but maybe Karlach can find a way to remove her engine in the Nine Hells, who knows?
I love how the OP went as far as turning himself half-illithid but then made Karlach take the bullet.
I did the same lol
I see Larian played Fallout 3 at one point and learned from the Fawkes debacle. Fawkes was immune to radiation, yet would not offer himself to save the day saying "this is your destiny, not mine" which fans hated. Here Karlach is dead anyway, so whats the difference between dying in her Tiefling body or as an Illithid? The goal is to save the day and she is willing to step into danger, accept the sacrifice and be the hero even at a loss to herself.
Great writing. This is how a real person in Karlach's situation would instinctively act. The way Karlach expresses her thought process decisively, staying true to her core values shows how well written her character is. She idolized heroes as a kid and now she gets to live out her childhood dream of dying a hero. Just another example of how Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be Game of the Year.
This part in this particular scenario is good. The ending itself is hella bad
It won't be "Game of the Year" because it makes AAA studios look bad. But we all know nothing's topping it in 2023.
@Broskisnowski But she'd be hunted the rest of her life until she's a slave again. That's why she was almost entirely against it.
You could send Fawkes in that room, either before or after the dlc was added. Because I very distinctly remeber sending Fawkes in that room since he was immune, and when the ending cutscene happened, the narrator ripped me a new one saying how I sent a more noble, true hero in the room. So naturally I just reloaded the last save I did and sacrificed myself.
@@js1031Hard to win "game of the year" when the only thing that's interesting is the cutscenes.
Larian gave us a third way, but didn't use it. One which does NOT involve turning anyone into a mindflayer and does NOT involve Gale blowing himself up. Runepowder. They were clearly and obviously setting it up as the way NOT to have to make a sadistic choice, even having the gnomes say it could blow up a city. But at some point in the development process, that was nixed, cut, or not given the go-ahead. It would have fit nicely, too. Getting the runepowder requires that the party go out of its way to do the brave, difficult, and moral thing over and over. To save the gnomes from the cult of the Absolute and Duergar in Grymforge, to rescue the gnomes from Moonrise towers, and to NOT use up the Runepowder in the Steel Watch Foundry, opting to take a more difficult path to blow the foundry up by saving the Gondians and getting one of them to the control center.
In-game, the runepowder barrel is useful, but hardly enough to blow up the Elder Brain, but in a cutscene, it would have done the trick, seeing what it can do to the foundry. Maybe it wouldn't vaporize the brain like Gale's Karsite Weave bomb, but blowing it into chunks or blasting it in half would still kill it.
It can be good dlc
Unfortunately, it would be a lot like the Act 2 ending where Gale blows him up, where yes, the masterminds and the elder brain are dead, but everyone outside the immediate blast radius that is tadpoled immediately becomes mind flayers and cause untold chaos across the sword coast. The runepowder bomb would have the same effect because you aren't using the brain to command all tadpoles and illithids to die before killing itself. Still, could be an interesting option, but not sure how it would play out with the whole Orpheus/Emperor drama. Doesn't seem like a plan either would agree to, and if Orpheus's power isn't lent to you, it's just a game over state.
@@johnmichaelchase8530 I don't see the problem, apart from any problem inherent to the Gale bomb, minus actually losing him. Same effect as Gale without him dying.
@@NonamearistoThe brain needs to give the command to destroy the rest of the tadpoles before it’s destroyed; if Gale explodes it at the end of Act 2, then all he’s done is stop the current Absolute inhibition on all carriers, dooming them to become mind flayers en masse.
@@MellowMink They need to get the signal to change their hosts.
Feels weird why you can't convince Emperor to side with Orpheus. Make it a very hard skill check, 99 or something. But make him see reason and possibly give birth to an alliance never seen before? Orph would still become a mindflayer and it would show the Emperor the Prince's true means and honor.
Just roll a 20
Lmao what? Did u heard urself?
Even with expertise at lvl 20 (which this game does not reach) max natural stat, the extra fiend d10 for skills and d4 guidance rolls all at max, rolling a 19 will still only give them 50 and a nat 20 wins already. A 99 DC check is stupid
And it's not like leaving the DC ai 50 fixes things either. You're still giving a much higher chance for a crit success to happen than a straight success, which is just silly
Give it a DC 30. It's not high enough to be impossible for non-expertise character to reach it with some help and a character with expertise would have some issue but won't be straight up impossible.
Yeah all these endings feel real shit, no real options even when you do everything right
@@rafaelcastor2089 well, i know there's one check that is 99 in this game. So no, Larian doesnt think its stupid. Its just something you shouldnt be able to do unless literally Stars align for it.
But did they expect 30 speed potions on every character?
"Human ingests 50 dose of Faerun Skooma and goes absolutely nuts"
No amount of gigabrains can compare to the power of enough hardcore drugs!
Local Faerunian person under the influence of alchemically enhancing drugs becomes the next flash and out runs time and death themselves. More at 11.
Not even mind flayers can predict the movements of midevil interdimensional space tweakers
This scene is so weird compared to when karlach becomes a mindflayer with Orpheus freed, in this scene she's silent and kinda like a thrall to the emperor.
While when Orpheus is freed scene, Karlach seems to be like the Karlach we've been together since she joined us.
I think the Emperor is most likely a bad-guy here. Power hungry vibes haha
Yeah, I'd never side with Emperor myself. Its enough when game force weird scene with him being halfnaked.
Also new epilogue for Karlach storming Avernus is much cooler fate imho, as she retains her personality and soul. As mindflayer she'd lose herself over time.
The Emperor is definitively evil. If you doubt him to much in dialogue, he reveals that previously he mind controlled the Duke to show you how lucky you are that he decided to try to be your friend instead of making you a puppet.
The reality of Mind Flayers is the destruction of the soul. This is WAAY worse then dying. Victims are obliterated. No afterlife. Nothing. Oblivion; with a creature, a soulless creature, having your memories. The Emperor isn't (REDACTED), the Emperor is just a shell with a copy of (REDACTED)'s memories. (REDACTED) is worse than dead, his soul has been obliterated. I don't even think a Wish spell could bring them back to life, there is nothing to bring back.

Gale offers his orb again for final resort, Karlach volunteers to become illithid. Little surprised Lae'zel didn't volunteer like Karlach while she could be pursuaded to agree to killing Orpheus or let her prince become one.. I love Larian's games but the game always give you vast choices of big and small stories you come across the world, and so little in the end. It's pretty frustrating how Larian didn't let me try to convince the Emperor and Orpheus to work together, at least TT
Emperor explicitly said he will never let Orpheus free and he wants to control the brain
yea the build up really was great. as soon as i went into the monastery i got instantly immersed in the game when previously i wasnt. But after watching the limitations of the story, how constrained it actually is, and how little players are actually trying to play a game of thrones, is underwhelming. There should be more manipulators and players in the main arc of this "power play". As thats what it should be. This should be a bunch of people trying to manipulate and control the powers of the illithids, and the illithids want to escape into the mortal realm. it would be simple, effective, and rewarding.
@@JackJackKcajify it's a game, you're always going to be limited in what you can actually do. What really matters is how you go about doing it. In reality Baldur's Gate 3 gives you multiple options to essentially do the same thing which is much better than most games having binary bullshit choices

The reason why having Orpheus and The Emperor work together is a terrible idea is that The Emperor would have to be the one to use the stones if he's the only mindflayer and the Weave Bomb isn't being used. The Emperor wants to take control of the Elder Brain and the party, Orpheus wants to destroy the brain. The Emperor- who can READ MINDS- must know that Orpheus won't actually attack the party, but he knows that Orpheus would never tolerate anyone using the Elder Brain, although this doesn't stop the player from pulling a very last-second betrayal.
The Emperor destroys the brain if you side with him when he could have dominated it. He was telling the truth about wanting freedom, it's just he's very paternalistic and manipulative.
Uhh not really
It took me a fairly hefty persuasion check to make him controll the brain instead of destroying it. In that playthrough I did not want to grow tentacles so the Emp was doing the heavy lifting of dominating the brain
So it's plausible, esp given that Orph can see past his hatred to Ghaik and collaborate with you

@@Zeras97When someone becomes Illithid, the parasite in their brain essentially absorbs their thoughts and personality and then consumes their body to transform into said Illithid. The person that it was is dead, and the Illithid that remains is a mutable copy whose stolen personality will disappear over time.
@@Zeras97doesn't matter because her soul is gone and her personality will fade over time just like the Emporer/Baldur. You can specifically ask withers/Jergal if mindflayers have souls. He says no. His answer is infallible. He is correct. This is a horrendous ending for Karlach.
@@nunya_bizniz I mean, she was transformed into a mind flayer via a very special tadpole that nobody has information on, and it was altered to allow Karlach to maintain her sense of self rather than become part of a hivemind. You get a romance ending with her after she becomes a mind flayer.
Being alive without a soul > Being dead with a soul that is bound for avernus
Keep in mind, Karlach was sold to Zariel. Meaning in death her soul would be Zariel's to take, freely and without inconvenience I might add. We've seen what happens to souls owned by devils in Avernus. I'd say living near-eternally as a more logical methodical version of Karlach without a soul and an odd hunger that can easily be sated by killing and eating criminals or monsters, is way better an end than suffering an excrutiatingly painful death of burning alive with the full heat of Avernus, and then have your soul be eternally bound to Zariel as a slave.
Maybe it's because I'm not religious but I'd definitely take living without a soul but still being myself over living as a slave in hell for eternity.
this is so sad
Which mod you are using for the damn dice rolls to succeed?
I downloaded something called Wemod. It was very early after release so it was pretty much the only option though, probably better options now.
fucking shit what a game
Bruh how do you have 246 HP
Feast of heroes, upcast Aid, 23 con necklace on a barbarian. Take the tough feat. End up with 222 hp at level 12. Might have some buff im not thinking of.
Is there a way for Karlach to not turn into a mindflayer.
You can choose to do it yourself but karlach will die without the transformation
@@PerfectParadoxso I shouldn’t build her into my party as my tank then?
@@zerobloodedge6632 it happens at the end of the game either way so you won't lose anything with her as your tank since you can still use her even as a mind flayer
@@PerfectParadox She survives if you send her back to Avernus at least and with not problem at all if you play as her for some reason.
Eh, i let wyll kill her when i met her 😂
At what point in game is this an option?
The end
@@PerfectParadox Thanks!
Illithid Karlach is surprisingly adorable
This is not a cool heroic sacrifice, imo. Karlach's soul gets destroyed too, so she died forever, never to experience the afterlife :(
Best ending for her
4:08 When you ignored the exclamation mark over Laezel's head there it physically hurt me
Is there an option where we all die with our original form, not by turning into a Mindflayer, and the MF's wins?
I don't care about the world if it burns, I just don't want to be a mindflayer or any of my companions. So we all die together. That leaves the adventure all for nothing but atleast we enjoyed the ride.
The emperor was already offering to do it himself? Its you/karlach that bring up they should do it
Orpheus can become mind flayer
you can blow up gale in the 2nd act and end the game there...
This is really fucked up
This is like the worst possible Universe lmao. It baffles me that you made those choices
so annoying the game doesnt start up for me anymore
Man I loathe Lae'zel's hypocrisy. "Are none of you capable of thinking beyond yourselves? My people's future hangs in the balance". Yeah- and? EVERYONE'S people's futures hang in the balance- NOT just yours you arrogant, self-important racist. I can't stand the entire Githyanki culture because of it.
disgusting game
the mfer line felt so out of place lol
