  • Framing a hip tray ceiling is very easy and a good introduction to basic roof framing geometry. All we need to know is the slope of the ceiling and the length of the rafters.
Using a Construction Master calculator, here are the steps.
    Enter PITCH then
    Enter Rafter length then
    click RUN
Just think of the layout as a hip roof and we need to know where the king commons go. To get the hip length, just click HIP/VAL and that is the sharp to sharp measurement.

Oh and another takeaway, if you use a drone for commercial work, you need to be part107 certified. Commercial work includes social media like UA-cam if you plan to make an income off of that. I watched a video about this last May and then purchased the Part 107 Course sso.teachable.... I studied and learned for 1 month and then took my test. I scored a 95%, which is a testament to how good Greg and the crew over there teach. That link will save you $100 off the course and support this channel.

Awesome fellas! I appreciate the love for building, passion for the industry, as well as the Haun style efficiency! Good in my book.

I’ve recently found your show and been stuck at UA-cam a couple evenings here. You are an awesome person and watching this one really stood out about you, in a good way. Don’t pay attention to critics or downers, people like us who are positive and passionate about our work or life are often singled out in a very negative world. Take care and be safe!

Even easier hip roof... don't do them ;-). Are any buyers actually asking for this detail? You mentioned you've been building them since 2001, which is probably about when the fad started to lose traction. I still love the tutorial and working through those compound angles that pop up here and there in a full build. Also, thanks for the videos!

Awesome to watch. Appreciate the craftsmanship even though I hate the architecture of tray ceilings.

planning on doing this for my entire house ceiling (house is 24'x26' fully hipped pyramidal roof, 12/12 pitch). basically framing the entire ceiling just under the roof rafters using all 2x6's. any suggestions or words of caution? (hips are 21', commons 17' - 24" OC to match the rafters then 1x strapping at 16" OC for drywall) considering gusseting to the rafters every 4' also

A 4/12 is 18.43 is that the degrees you ripped your hips at?

I'm fairly certain the answer is NO. The rip angle on those hip rafters is another whole different thing. @@dfarb8753
