About The Game: Star Fox Zero is a 3D scrolling shooter video game developed by Nintendo and PlatinumGames for the Wii U. The sixth installment in the Star Fox series, Star Fox Zero was stated by lead producer and supervising director Shigeru Miyamoto as being neither a prequel, sequel, or remake of Star Fox 64. After a delay from November 2015, the game was released worldwide in April 2016, to mixed critical reception. A standalone tower defense game, titled Star Fox Guard, was bundled with the game

I thought I was the only person that likes this game!!! The controls had a steep learning curve, but I felt it was worth it. Once you get it down after a few levels you have a lot of fun with it. Yeah, it's not a game for casuals or whiners in my opinion, and that's fine. I was content with only me liking it, but it's still fun to see someone else be excited about it.
It was made by Platinum Games. Their games always have steep learning curves, some of them downright punishing for those who can't master their games' gameplay
Now you guys know how I felt when my friends and I absolutely loved Star Fox Assault... and absolutely no one else seemed to.
Avery Westmark I sold like 3-5 wii U games just to buy this game and I'm a casual and I LOVE this game
I would say I enjoy it, though I do see its issues and I understand why some people (and by that, I mean, a LOT of people) didn't like it.
Avery Westmark omg me too
What Nintendo should have done is make a star fox prequel with James mc cloud and the old starfox team. I bet all the fans would love to know how the events leading up to starfox 64 happened.
Yes!
+Philly S Nah.
Make it like a DLC campaign or something, but not a full game. Fox is the one with the fandom behind him.
+MasterKeiya Mate u serious? People would buy the shit out of it.
If it's better then the Star Wars prequels count me in
+Philly S What I'd like to see too is playing as the Star Wolf Team with Andross talking to you instead of Pepper and get their side of view
CAN I GET AN AMEN FOR THAT AMAZING SPEECH TWORDS THE END!

I do too
+Andrew Peska I did when I first played it, but I remember going back to it at one point and realizing just how bad the story and acting were. And honestly, the game play wasn't that fun. Wasn't bad either, but something about it feels a little basic.
Yup still better than this garbage
I loved star fox assault too :D
Nah, Star Fox Assault is garbage compared to this masterpiece that is "Star Fox Zero". Definitely the best in the series.
Finally we have a new Star Fox game! If you could build your own squadron, who would be in it?

Shame this game has gone down as mostly forgotten and overlooked due to the Wii U's failures.
I wish the Wii U was a bigger success so more people not only experienced the game but more people appreciated it. As it is it's just one of those games people dismiss as bad without even playing it.
Hm. I've had the game waiting for a while now. Would love to see your full thoughs on your great channel though :)
I firmly believe a Switch port would give this game the well deserved attention it never quite got. As long as they fixed the controls, though.
I’m sad that the Wii U failed but I’m happy that this game is still a Wii U exclusive as I feel that there are just way too much Wii U ports on Switch that prevents us from getting sequels. If Star Fox has a game on Switch, I hope it would be a new original game instead of a lazy Wii U port with a “funky mode” added.
The controls are what divide people on this title. They aren't that bad IMO, would have been with a more traditional layout especially given that it wasn't a launch title like initially planned. Nintendo should really port this over, so more people can get a change to play it, it really is one of the first Stat Fox games in a while to actually feel like a star Fox game.
22:05 "Time to show off what I've learned."
*Accidentally shoots Falco*
This game sort of sounds like the skyward sword of the star fox series in regards to how people view the controls.
Elijah Hill I gotta completely disagree I find skyward sword the best looking 3D Zelda until breath of the wild came out. Zelda’s always been linear as every 3D Zelda except for ocarina forces you to go in dungeon order. Even then you could only do at most 3 out of order. I really enjoy the story and it is leagues better than breath of the wild’s story. I don’t care if you don’t agree with me because I love Zelda for how different people have a different favorite and least favorite.
The controls sucks.
If only nintendo stayed with normal controls, it would be good.
@@elijahhillproductions I agree skyward sword is doo doo, but I also disagree in the fact that the story is probably one of the best in the series. And hands down has the best Zelda. And linearity has always been a factor in Zelda games, save a handful of them. I don’t know why people try to use that as a negative criticism. Linear doesn’t equal bad
@@Raylightsen No, they're great and deep
@@Link-pr9id eh, skyward sword's linearity and fractured world definitely works against it. i had a great time with the hd remaster and I thought the dungeon design was pretty stellar but i was disappointed by the bizarre, fairly tiny overworld design, even if i appreciated the changes when you revisit areas in the late game and thought those were a fun change of pace. i'm sure botw spoiled me in terms of content and open world gameplay, but i replayed ocarina shortly afterward and found the world quite a bit more engrossing. skyward is a flawed gem, one of the series' weaker points in my opinion but still a strong game regardless. the sky just plain sucks but it looks like they're going to tackle that concept again in the botw sequel and i'm psyched for that
That's it! No, that's fucking it holy crap, that opening sequence has got to be the best this show has ever gotten. Great job Starbeards, can we make that a t-shirt?
Yeah, it's been a long time we got this kind of humour that actually hits the spot instead of being all serious or forced humour. It's both really good and clever cox' they know their material..
HAHAHAHAH Cocks
AHHH!!! IT'S TOO HOT!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!
As much as I love starfox, and I do hope to pick up a copy of SF0 sometime soon, my gripe is not with the controls. My gripe is mainly the story. Nintendo chose to reboot the reboot after giving SF64 an enhanced remake on the 3DS. I don't want this game's storyline to be stuck on an infinite loop when it deserves more of an expanded universe with spin off titles, something that Starfox Command practically ruined years prior.
+HadoukenDude Maybe if people tried it out for themselves and bought it, they would have made a sequel to SFZ's story with improved controls. But, you know. People demand stuff to Nintendo but also they hack their Nintendo consoles in order to play it but not buy it.
The last level in particular actually gave me some hope that the story would continue from where this game left off and become it's own thing. It would be very interesting to see, story wise, where this particular story goes. Somewhat of a Spoiler Alert: Andross does his darnedest to get inside Fox's head at the end, and I think it would be interesting to see the morality become more grey. I really want to see a story sequel to this.
I agree, but at the same time they did this before and the fans hated it and clamored for something like 64, so Nintendo was just trying to please them, but ofc as soon as they got what they wanted, "Oh it's too much like SF64!"
All because Command had multiple endings with not one of them even announced canon?
Hopefully with Zero, We get a more established Storyline after that.
Also hoping Krystal isn't reintroduced into the series with the new storyline. (If there is one.)
She was so bland and generic from Adventures to Command. Nintendo didn't know what the fuck to do with her after Rare went to Microsoft.
Then suddenly joins Starwolf for almost no reason at all.
I know that it's not canon. But my god that was so unbelievably stupid.
"BARREL ROLL!!!" "BARREL ROLL!!!" "BARREL ROLL!!!" "BARREL ROLL!!!"
...
Glorious, Nintendo, just glorious...
#MEMEOVERLOAD
I love Star Fox Zero and I really think it’s an underrated Wii U gem that got criticized mainly because people did not want to give a chance. I have a “special” history with Star Fox Zero. I rented this game for a week when it was a recent game and I really loved it. I remember the game being incredibly hard and punishing but in less than a week I finished it and it was amazing. I gave the game back to the store after the week of usage I had. Then, years after I originally played it, I heard people saying the game was trash and I was surprised and I saw that it was actually the popular opinion. So I recently bought the game (with Star Fox Guard) for 45$ CAD and began playing a second time and I still love it. In fact, I might love it even more now that I can appreciate it’s difficulty as I am more skilled as a gamer. I love this game because it is hard and punishing which is a thing I really love with it because Nintendo tend to just make games that are way too easy even for the standard of their series such as Kirby Star Allies and Super Mario Odyssey but it’s not the case for this game and I’m grateful for this. I actually need to learn and understand the game mechanics to win. I am also a huge fan of the gameplay variety of this game there is a lot of vehicles to use and I love them all especially the Walker/Arwing as it just feels so good to switch between the two at will. The amiibo support is amazing! The controls are weird at first but when I got used to them they were great and use well the GamePad.
Am I the only one who never had trouble with this game's control and motion controls in general? Once I got past the tutorial I was good to go. My only problems were my shit aim, slow reaction time and the gyrocopter. (That thing controls like ass.)
Same here, the only time I had problems with the controls was during the second phase on Corneria
So you were good with the controls except you couldn't hit anything? Can you tell where you get your nostalgia goggles, mine don't seem too be doing it for me.
Ryan Dooley
I never played Star Fox 64.
Zero nostalgia over here.
gr8 b8 m8
+Alexander Kuroyami It's not really the controls that bother me. I actually think the motion control aiming works fine. The part I absolutely can't stand is the dual screen mechanic.
DevilHunter1994
It takes some getting used to. You can press the minus button to switch the tv and game pad screens, if it can make it less confusing for you. I use third person to dodge and manuver and first person for better aiming.
I need that "BARREL ROLL!" as my text message notification sound

I'm going to be sad if we don't get another starfox game because people can't get used to the controls..
I'm going to be sad if we don't get another Starfox game because Nintendo decided to base the last one around a gimmick and then are surprised when people dont like it.
@@Ponaru
But the motion controls in SFZ actually work really well.
Just because you DSPs can't handle motion aiming (mostly out of bias against motion controls in general), even if it's vastly superior to shitty dual analogue aiming, doesn't mean that they're just a bad gimmick.
How about taking what little time it actually takes to learn and get used to a new control scheme instead of complaining? I and many people out there like Star Fox Zero. Hell, I even completed that game. On my first run through the game, I activated the Black Arwing by accident, because I wanted to see what my Falco Amiibo does, and I still got through the game without much trouble, even though the Black Arwing is a fucking glass cannon that goes down within just a few hits.
@@D-Nova Lmao Wow man you are soooooo amazing! Now get a fucking life.
@@Ponaru How bout you
@@D-Nova I LOVE the controls, when I see videos on SF64,It looks annoying shooting someone, then they turn around, and then you have to turn around, with SF0 controls,it feels smooth.

+Clayton Grange Yeah it reset the video to 00:00 and froze it for me.
Okay, I'm not the only one.
+Clayton Grange time links been fucking up for some reason and youtube needs to fix it
+Clayton Grange You need to use the Amiibo for that feature.
This game is really suffering from the Skyward Sword syndrome, where a control scheme that is very heavy on motion controls will either make or break the game for a lot of people. I personally didn't had that much trouble with this game's control scheme, hell if anything I prefer this game's use of motion controls over Skyward Sword's motion controls, but at the same time, I do understand the complaints that this game is getting lately. I really did enjoyed StarFox Zero overall, but I won't deny that the control scheme is definitely a hit/miss for a lot of people & is definitely not a game for everyone, specifically those who are no a fan of motion controls or don't have the patience to learn a radically different control scheme.
+Jonnathan Sosa True, but motion controls are tiring to some people now. Even if Nintendo made it top notch, I don't even know if people would had a different opinion for the positive, if they move it all over the place or stuff like that, and don't have the patience to. Some of them just jump into the game trying to pick it up on the fly. Even if it's training mode, they possibly would have a say before they even finished the training mode. Motion Controls just don't "feel ready", and they just wanted the usual control scheme like in SF64, but what they wanted more was a different SF game that continued off from previous games, even if it was Command which was the at least favorite game.
Tbh when I played SF SNES and SF64 a long time ago, I completely sucked at it at first. Pick up and play doesn't mean being instantaneously good. With NX on the way, people won't have to worry about motion controls ever again, hopefully.
Now we just need a new FZero.
+Phil Jackson "FZero 0"
GX was the pinnacle. I don’t think there’s much to add to the series.
@@Frilleon You don't need to add much new. Just add HD graphics, new missions and challenges, and an online racing mode and you've got a truly kick-ass sequal lined up
@@thepolarcool1 We all know how shit Nintendo is at Online modes.

POLYGON!!!!!!!!!
I'm just assuming the person who reviewed this on Polygon have half their brain missing, getting comfortable with the controls took me about 5-10 minutes.
The way he tried to justify himself on twitter also says a lot about him. He claimed that he likes hard games because he's played thousands of hours of Dota 2. Which doesn't really help his case seeing as Dota 2's controls are so simplistic that most of the game is played through pathfinding.
+TheDuckClock I'd have no issue if they just said it wasn't for them and left it at that, but when they go and make statements like "THIS IS EVERYTHING BAD ABOUT WII U GAME DESIGN" you can tell they just do it to get attention and cause controversy. Fatal Frame 5 had similar complaints when it comes to control, but it had nowhere near as much hype around it and a smaller audience, so no one kicked up a fuss looking to cause drama.
Condensed version: the story's the same again, the controls are bad but you love Star Fox so it's ok. There's new ships that break the momentum of the game where you gotta slow down to use a helicopter and a walkie bot along with a hacking timewaste. Wing damage is gone because it was too tough, I mean... innovation. Increased difficulty from forced gamepad views. Completion bonus renders amiibo integration useless.
When you have to say "do not let the controls get you down" there's still a problem there. I do respect your message at the end though. Keep doing what you do.
+Chezne "the controls are bad but you love Star Fox so it's ok" So you completely ignored the part where he said he _liked_ the controls, along with anti-frustration features to boot
"There's new ships that " Only one new ship. You also only use it for two missions only (one if you already cleared the story). Every other mission uses the Arwing and Landmaster
"Wing damage is gone because it was too tough, I mean... innovation." You lose your Hyper Laser if you are hit twice, regardless of how much damage was incurred
" Increased difficulty from forced gamepad views" Only increased if you didn't want to learn how to adjust to them. By the time you've reached at least near the end of the game, you should have gotten used to them already
"Completion bonus renders amiibo integration useless." 'Kay? Plenty other games have DLC that render completion goals useless. And maybe, just maybe people want the option to be able to use that stuff right away.
You are a disgrace to furries.
Chezne i dont know why everyone was hating. This is all accurate. I forced myself to play it for a week because star fox 64 was my childhood, but ZERO was such a let down. They shouldn't have made the gamepad so integral to the game. I just want a star fox game that is tough because of the game content, not the control scheme. And they ruined the flow of the game with the different modes and gimmicks. This game is fine for the new generation, but older gamers who grew up on the n64 star fox when they were little kids are gonna find this game a massive letdown.
The game controls are not bad. This was literally the first game I played on the Wii U and the controls worked fantastically. It took me maybe 10 minutes to get the controls down and this was my first Wii U game. What's your excuse?
Wow it saddens me that everywhere you look someone can't say their opinion or offer light criticism without being mutilated LOL, the person who originally commented wasn't being rude or mean or anything, but for the most part instead of a discussion nothing but hate. Sad
I still think Assault is better.
I agree with you. Star Fox Zero is getting so much hate, but it's awesome!
+Tanner Hankins
To be fair, most reviewers have a limited time to commit to games they review, and steps that impede this process, (like new controls) will impact there impressions.
Looking forward to trying the co op with my brother :)
Wow Someone actually played the game before reviewing it
You know, this whole thing reminds me of The Wonderful 101. An underappreciated Wii U title whose controls are awkward to get used to, but is amazing when it starts to click. I've been interested in trying out Star Fox for a little while now, and if I was able to make W101 work, I think I might enjoy this game.
I have more than 4 hours playing but hate the control still
plae moar.
Seriously, 4 hours are not enough.
+LS95 I played more still the control's ruin it. They really should of ignored the motion style things and just had the pad for a menu screen or something. No matter how long you play you can't really escape that feeling you are wrestling with the control's. Still a decent game but they need to patch in an option to deal with the issues.
+EvoliEX94 Although I get used to it in an instant I play the main game, I can symphatize you. This is Sin and Punishment 4, you know? Sin and Punishment games got hated since the 3rd game. *cough* Kid Icarus Uprising *cough*
If you don't like it after a play through or two just stop. You either like it out don't. I tried to force myself to like it but I couldn't. to me it is worse than adventures because at least adventures I could play. this I find unplayable.
+EvoliEX94 If a game takes more than 2-3 hours to get used to the controls it's not worth it and just bad game design.
"Git gud"
the completionist - 2016
it would be my word for gamers now, too many spoon feeding and hand holding nowadays
It is when the controls work fine and shitty "MLG pro" players refuse to adapt. Scrub.
So no secret brain fight?
Aww... :(
+Caw That's something that confuses me. There's a portal on Venom on the level select screen. For every other level, that means there's an alternate path you can take to beat it. On Venom (and one other level that has a portal) I haven't been able to find the secret path; I also can't find anything for these two stages online.
Dude, you gave me hope, there's gotta be a secret brain fight!!
And on the sound test their is a model viewer thing and one is a full Andross in what looks like wizard clothes or something. It's his full body to. Not just the head.
+Torn Most importantly, when you enter in that Andross' "barrier" he changes in a cyborg version. And that is strange for me.
Fantastic review! this guy gets it. I'm loving the hell out of this game and thank god i watched that u don't get anything for getting all the medals. I was really thinking about doing it and avoided watching this review so not to spoil the surprise rewards, i would have been extremely pissed to found out you get nothing lol. Now i'm just going to play this game for fun and not deal with that frustration. Easily, my FAVORITE STAR FOX GAME YET.
I know this is six years late, but you do get something for unlocking all 70 medals. It unlocks the retro and black arwings without the use of an amiibo.
I'm gonna let you in on a little something, although I enjoy your show thoroughly from the quirky humor and meticulous details provided for each and every game you complete, I also watch your show because, frankly, I value your personal opinion on what you play. I've actually bought, at least, a dozen of the games that you've completed using your show in place of a standard review, not just because you don't get paid to play ones like this, but you give a FULL review based off of completion, not just a brief trial. Plus, you think a lot like I do when it comes to gaming. I don't know if you'll ever read this or not, but if you do, thank you. I promise that all of your sometimes grueling efforts are not in vain, and are, in fact, incredibly appreciated. I wish I could help, to be honest. xD
Got this game as a Black Friday deal, and after playing it through to the final level I think I got my money's worth; I'll take the same tried and true arcade-style formula from the N64 era over the all-range shenaningans of Assault and whatever Command is supposed to be. The learning curve only reminded me of the first time I played Star Fox 64, cuz' I totally sucked at it, but every time I play it I keep getting better, scoring more hits and having a better time with it. Plus, it came packaged with Star Fox Guard and I am really having a blast with that one too... yeah I love playing tower defense games (Plant vs Zombies FTW!). I understand why many people may feel underwhelmed by Star Fox Zero's premise and delivery, but at the end of the day I think I did myself a favor by getting it. And I also firmly believe that if NIntendo want to try something different with their franchises in the future, they'd better think of the players first and make their games more accesible and attractive not just for the casual fans but also for their longtime hardcore fans (also avoid motion controls as much as possible, cuz' they have become a plague for many people.)
I bought it last week and only started playing it today - I've been really enjoying it so far, it's one thing watching vids of it on youtube and a whole different thing playing it - the game is intense and I love the learning curve. That boss battle on the desert level is nuts. It has that Nintendo feel that I can't explain.
I actually do enjoy it myself. It's fun. I also like their new designs too.
I bought the game on launch day. Looking back, I don't think the game warranted the full $60, but I had a great time with it regardless. Got all the medals on the first week after hours of gameplay, and I still go back every now and then to try and beat my previous scores.
While *I* believe that the controls are just fine and lend themselves to the way the game is designed, there is absolutely no denying that the setup is quite obtuse and inaccessible. The gyro aiming should've definitely been an option; very slight tweaks to bosses and enemies would make the game playable with the traditional aiming method.
I actually really loved the motion controls despite the steep learning curve.
+TheLastTrinityOmega I've grown to like them as well. The learning curve is there and it is very steep, but in the end, it'll make you, or anyone who puts the time and energy into it, a better player because they prove that they can adapt to given control schemes or other situations.
+General Snivy +TheLastTrinityOmega You two are right on it.The learning curve is a bit of a challenge. I gotta buy you two some beers. What do you say to being a star fox style crew? we need an extra dude.though
EvilLordDeimos Sounds like fun xD
The controls are bad even beyond the gyro gimmick.
Good for you.
Am I the only one that didn't have any trouble with the controls? I am not super good at games nor did I use motion controls in splatoon.

LakituLiL It's a joke where JonTron reviewed Starfox Adventures and in the title he put in Stairfax Temperatures for the video.
+Jair Benitez he did more then just put it in the title, he literally pronounced it like that all throughout the video XD I don't think he even said the real name till he was going through the history of the game.
Dont you mean Stairfax Temperatures?
HEY EINSTEIN! IM ON YOUR SIDE!
Jirad just called out all the people that need to "gt gud" at this game haha
+rjstanley89 ironic considering he still hasnt fixed the DS2 review
+Jerec 12 There's a difference between getting good and don't take damage ever in one of the shittiest sequels ever and a mediocre unfun game.
"a mediocre unfun game" you didn't play the same dark souls 2 as me...
Celio Hogane Perhaps you just like mediocre sequels?
Con Cahill Perhaps you are just only a hipster that can only enjoy games based on popularity?
I'm so glad Jirard got it. Finally , somebody gets the game. It's fantastic
StarFox Zero doesnt "Answer what StarFox is", because it wasnt a question that needed to be answered. Assault brought the 64 formula to the modern age of the time, and command pushed forward with that. For one reason or another they put StarFox to the side and thought "Oh shit, the fans only want 64 again, so let's keep making 64", and so now, the series will continue to be trapped in this stale formula, much like OTHER franchises Nintendo has been slowly killing that are "basically the same each time", as you said.
+ShadowThePika Awesome. Someone else gets it.
uhm... the story you mean? because everything else is a step up to the series.
"Can't even tell it's developed by Platinum"
You say that like it's a good thing
Thank you so much for this review Jirard. I too, was discouraged by the reviews I read online, but have ended up having an immense amount of fun with this game. I'd place it in the top 3 best Wii U games out right now. The controls really are incredible once you get use to them. Now if you excuse me, I gotta get the last 16 medals ;)
BARREL ROLL!
Am I the only one who wants to have a Star Fox game with the original crew. That's right: James McCloud! Have the final level be where he is betrayed, and take on as many enemies until shot down. @w@
That sounds pretty awesome!! But maybe it would fit more as dlc to this game or a new one
Sounds like the ending of red dead redemption.
Daicarrus Oh yeah, they did that...still, it would be touching to see James say goodbye to Peppy one last time and tell him to take care of his son @m@ the feels would be reals!!
I will say two words that i hope everyone gets. Crisis Core
Agree with Compeltionist, LOVE this game as much as 64!!! Learning the controls is SO worth it! :D
hes right. i listened to the reviews of others...and some family members. but if u play with it....and get the controls down. its fun as crap!
Yep, the h8ers just need to git gud that's all
h8ers gonna h8
How is crap fun XD?
But, if you don't or simply can't enjoy the controls, its one of the most frustrating games to play. So much so, that I returned it for a copy of Star Fox 64 3D for the 3DS. A much better game overall, to me at least.
Am i the only one that was dissapointed that you can't loose your wings when you get the laser upgrade? The threat of loosing your wings in the original starfox game encouraged you to stop being stupid and pilot your arwing flawlessly.
+Claudio Teixeira Not the only one. It was a pretty unique mechanic that you don't see often. It's not like it was permanent through the level either, as you could pick up wing repair power-ups.
Just following the trend of dumbing down games, as usual.
+BoltFraction considering the controls being it's own huge barrier, I think it'd be worse
No, you're not the only one disappointed. I loved that about the NES and 64 games. That mechanic was something that drove me to play better. I think if Nintendo had kept the wing damage, they'd have wound up having to simplify the controls.
Also! can't be a transformer if one of your wing-legs is broken. lol
Props to you Jirard for judging this game on its own terms and its own merits. It's probably the only honest review out there where the reviewer doesn't just rage-quit after not getting the controls down pat after 15 minutes.
For posterity's sake, the "brand new splash logo" at the title screen when you get all the medals etc. is actually a homage to the box art (and instruction manual art) of the original SNES game.
Though it's not a review per se, gillythekid did a really goo video about it.
You should check it out.
Gamexplain did a review that was fair and understood the controls. They didn't love it as much as Jirard did, but it was a good review nonetheles
he's not judging it by its merits he's completely bias because he's a nintendo fanboy
Not liking a game you like or even being terrible at a game you don't struggle as much with doesn't qualify as "dishonesty."
jing jang So everyone who doesn't agree with you is a nintendo fanboy?
This is the most positive review I've ever seen of this game. Sure the motion controls are confusing at first, but they're not bad. So far Nintendo has put all the effort they could into this game, and it's a shame how underrated this game is. Star Fox fans give this game all the effort you can, and it will pay off.
Gommo64
I'm putting it on my Christmas list
Plus it wasn't a "half a game, then the other half is dlc" like a lot of games these days.
NRsilver23 it's a big reason why I prefer Nintendo over anyone else.
I got it a couple days ago.
And I really love it after I got used to the the motion controls.
As the Completionist said.
It plays a lot like Splatoon in terms of Aiming and shooting.
***** To me kickstarting and presentation aside, it's an overall average game.
Honestly I got used to the controls pretty quickly.
Motion controls are neat, but I hate the idea of having to use it for a game like this. They should've at least given a decision to use normal controls or use motion controls.
+Andesine_ ^^^^ This
You are exactly right about the controls. At first I was really frustrated but as I got better at the game I realized it's one of the most immersive and rewarding games. It requires an amount of concentration that makes you feel almost like you are in the game. Best start fox ever IMO.
Bottom line: fuck Polygon.
Like, literally, they can go to hell, with Arthur Gies leading the march into said hell. "UWAAAAA DA GAME IS TOOO HARD EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T TAKE DAMG"
GROW THE HELL UP, MAN!
Am I being too harsh? Probably, but think not. I am tired of Polygon bullshit.
On that note, Jirard, I thank you for the review, as I wanted to see from it whether I should buy the game or not. Now? Probably will, but I just started DS3 so maybe later.
So people are saying that the controls for Star Fox Zero are a little wonky. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will patch the game in the future that will allow you to customize the control scheme that will work best for you. Just a thought. :)
+Brian Naas they wont though that's not how Nintendo rolls
deadwolf1227 Hey, it was just a thought.
Brian Naas I know and i hope they do, if they do i would buy it
+deadwolf1227 Actually, they patched Pikmin 3 to have proper GamePad controls. It's not impossible.
looking back, your optimism is appreciated. It was totally wrong, they never did, but it's appreciated :)
This game is basically the first Sonic Riders
high as FUCK learning curve, but once you get there, you're having fun
Can't wait to get this
yeah but Sonic Riders' mechanics made sense and were intuitive. This game's controls are forced, unintuitive and worse than just controlling it normally.
What you said about Star Fox was literally what everyone tells me Sonic Riders was -.-
idk why star fox snes is always overshadowed... I played snes starfox *WAY* more then the n64 starfox...
+Jason Allcreator Depends on which one you grew up with. I grew up with 64, and I hadn't played the SNES version until 10 years after I got 64.
+Jason Allcreator Perhaps it was because I played the SNES one first, but I also found it to be a better game than the N64 one.
Maybe because it ran like shit, lagging frequently with massive frame drops. Lacked a decent presentation with annoying sounds instead of actual voice acting. It has no multiplayer. It's multi-route system is extremely basic compared to 64. It has vastly inferior graphics. It has less unlockable content. It has worse controls.
Perhaps that will give you an idea.
Jason Allcreator the SNES Star Fox never appealed to me but Star Fox 64 is one of the greatest video games of all time.
Star Fox 1? Eh. Star Fox 2? Heck yea dude
And this is why I abandoned IGN and other game review sites and trust youtube videos instead. I have been upset and disgusted by Nintendo fans (who were in the quit due to controls or haven't even played it), who have shot the game down!
im not even a star fox fan but that message at the end was really awesome and my respect for u has grown 😊!
Somehow ,seeing that intro reminded me if Greg's absence
what heppen to him ?
Just a disagreement, he left the show over a year ago unfortunately.
Jirard has adapted and the show is great in it's own, new rite, but I think everyone that is Completionist fan is always going to miss him.
+dannone gamer
He and Jirard fell out for undisclosed reasons.
+dannone gamer JIrad fired him
They even made a Mentos joke without him
I respect your opinion but I feel like this video was just you saying that people will get used to the controls over and over. If the controls are bad, they are bad. Just because you got used to them doesn't mean it's okay. But that's just my opinion, keep on doing what you do Jirard. Still enjoyed the video regardless even if I disagree with you.
+Trepie Controls are only bad if they don't work they way they're supposed to; if all it takes is to simply get used to them over time, then they're not bad.
I got used to the controls in the first quarter of the first mission. Don't know what everyone else is on about.
It really is a shame Star Fox Zero has been getting torn into. I honestly believe it's the best game since 64, and even more exciting for me than it once I actually got good. It'd be an absolute travesty if the series died after this title, it was the one I was waiting for.
+Kevin Travis The series wouldn't die, what would happen is that they wouldn't use the same control scheme. I only wish they gave the option like in Splatoon.
sadly, rather than being the saviour of the franchise (An instalment in which we can all agree that the potential has paid off). Star Fox Zero, is another polarising bag in the franchise, worse it may be the death of the franchise. Star Fox may become another dump bag thrown into the world of lost franchises along with Metroid and F-Zero.
2016 might as well be one the worst year for Star Fox and Metroid.
VGF80 damn Metroid was really getting thrown in there as dead with FZero back in 2016 huh?
With these reviews and this constant trying to get us to accept the controls, it's hard to believe that you dont have some bias towards nintendo stuff just because of your partnership.
+xscaralienx He literally said at the beginning that this wasn't a sponsored video.
+Michael Layman And HE literally said BIAS. Not sponsored.
+Connor Mulder HE said partnership, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in order for Jerard to be in a partnership with Nintendo, wouldn't his videos need to be sponsored and paid by them.
And I did notice he said BIAS, but it's quite clear that Jerard isn't letting any type of bias interfere with his thoughts.
So...same story, shitty motion controls, SUPER mediocre unlocks...mediocre reviews from everybody but Beardy here...think I'll stay away. Shame they made, yet another, shitty Star Fox game.
but they didn't, the game rocks
Except it's a good story, the motion controls are alright, and largely optional, and it's an on rails shooter. It doesn't need unlocks.
It's all about the gameplay, which is fantastic, 9 times out of 10.
+KhaosElement GameXplain gave it a good review. Motion controls aren't for everyone I guess but It's a shame people don't give them a chance at all. I don't even think they're that bad if they're used correctly. Which I would say that they are here. As for the unlocks, yeah I guess you don't get many rewards but there are plenty "good" games that have mediocre unlocks, it hardly has to do with the quality of the game.
Says the guy with a shitty show as his profile pic.
love the intro! also im eating noodle soup
+Skyler B (TheBakedGamer) noice
BeaverBruh so tasty xD
I'm not gonna lie, I got a little teary eyed with that tribute in the credits.
Me too man, my body wasn't ready
Do Pikmin 1,2 and 3
yes
+Theamazinggamer Agreed.
yas
of course (Pikmin 2=masterpiece)
Definitely pikmin 2. It's worth it to complete that one.
I don't know what the mainstream reviewers were talking about, this game is absolutely awesome! Star Fox 64 was probably the second game I ever played, and Zero feels like a true sequel to that game in a way the others just didn't. Having an appreciation for the franchise certainly helps, but any way I look at it this game is absolutely amazing.
PREACH IT
+HildaTilde I did not like 64. As a game I felt it didn't suit me.
I love Zero, its my favorite WiiU game.
So this game is like if Star Fox 2 and Star Fox 64 had a baby
+Daniel Robles but it came out mentally retarded and can't control worth a damn.
That gamepad/tv screen split gameplay sounds disgusting. I probably won't go out of my way to play this game.
not the proper use of the word disguising
Did you even watch the video,
+Silas the Paladin Ugh I meant for a question mark
+Silas the Paladin I watched it. I wasn't convinced that it would be a fun enough experience to get the game. It was annoying enough trying gyro controls in Splatoon, this sounds like a whole new level of ridiculousness.
This game is catching some crazy flack, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Thanks to you, Jirard.
+Arturo Garza Lol
+Arturo Garza DON'T BUY IT. You will regret the decision as I had done based off of this review. Game Over'd in only the third level due to the controls disorienting me.
+Billy Raymond lol
+Billy Raymond You suck.
+Billy Raymond Get good
"Platinum Games is the main producer on this game..."
That's it. That's all I need to hear. I'm buying this, and I'm going to love it!
I've played Revengeance. Nuf said.
BDeerhead well platinum had good games but have flopped more than once
Ehhhhhh... Platinum has had their share of subpar releases. It's just that when they do a game good, they do it really, really good.
I've seen from personal experience that they know how to program a camera a Hell of a lot better than Fromsoft ever has. So that's already a huge plus in my book!
That's kinda apples and oranges, really. From Software's games tend to be a completely different kind of action game than Platinum's. It's hard to compare a slower, meticulous game to Platinum's brand of fast, frantic combo-based action.
As far as basic game mechanics go, Revengeance and Darks souls aren't that different. I kinda lump their most basic mechanics in with other similar 3D games like Kingdom Hearts, God of War, maybe Mario 64 and the like, and so on.
13:40 That is wrong, you do lose the laser power up opon taking too many hits. You do keep your wings however. Also I fail to see how this is "innovative", it's just a balance change.
+Warbot He's gotta say as many positive words as he can about the game, seeing as Nintendo has him wrapped around their finger.
I think not losing the wings anymore is not an improvement. They could just added difficulty options and leave the indestructible for the sissis.
I remember unlocking the hardest mode for Star Fox 64 in which you would lose your wing with 1 single hit to a wall.
It seemed like you did quite a bit of bashing of Starfox Assault which go figure is actually my favorite of all of the Starfox games. I would like to see you do a competition review of Assault if you ever get around to it, but I get that could be a handful especially if you're not fond of the game.
As I first started watching this video, I was thinking, "Man, Jirard is blinded by nostalgia. They rehashed everything minus the ship damage..." And I was really thinking if the rest of his episodes are going to be this fanboy-esque, begging us to like a game we are predisposed to not enjoying, I wouldn't watch it anymore.
However that last segment about why he did a review like this added a lot of context. Its an antithesis to those other reviews. A hard counter point against a tide. Which, even if I don't agree with Jirard's opinion, I can respect it.
that's my thought too, I'm always a bit iffy ever y time he does a nintendo game ( especially ones he gets for free, and gets to let Miamoto for) but this was very level headed even with all those added bonuses.
Hey Jirard, it's been over five years since you made this video. Before I watched this review, I was completely unsure of whether I wanted to buy Star Fox Zero. I'l admit, a lot of the negative reviews were getting to me, and I was unwittingly being influenced by them. But your video, this video, was what ultimately made me get the game. This video, helped me realize that I need to form my own opinions on games and the like, instead of being led on by others. And getting Star Fox Zero was undoubtedly the right move in the end. Because just like you said, it was tough, real tough to get used to the controls at first. But eventually I did, and I even 100% the main campaign. And I have never regretted buying and playing Star Fox Zero. So thank you, Jirard. This game marked a turning point for me as a person, and it's because of you. You showed me to look deeper than just what was on the surface, and just what the bandwagon said. If I ever get the chance, I'd be honored to fly as one of your wingmen.
Not losing your wings anymore is a good thing? That thing in particular really makes me question this review, I really liked that if you screwed up hard enough you paid for it.
+Connor Wilson Especially seeing that SF0 has an invincibility mode, similar to the white raccoon suit in the Super Mario series. Why couldn't this just be a feature in THAT!?
Red Axl I think Jirard is just too biased towards Nintendo for his reviews of nintendo games to be trustworthy. Everyone else I've heard has bashed the motion controls and said it isn't that great of a game, while Jirard is praising this game to the high heavens.
He's a true Nintendo fanboy--completely blinded by nostalgia!
Antiform actually the three main opinions whom I base my argument on all made their statements on the game after completing it themselves. One said it was a shameless cashgrab, one said it just wasn't what they wanted, and the other said it just brought about too many unwelcome changes for them to like it.
but yeah no the opinions are just parroting the same thing and giving up on the game immediately after beating it
Connor Wilson Well I'm glad at least some of them did bother to complete the game, that's definitely a minority among the reviews though
MUST..... GET...THIS GAME.... NEED... TOO.. SHOOT.THINGS...WITH...LASERS!!!!!
+UltraOmniLinkMega You're profile picture suits the comment perfectly.
+Dan Shen hehe, it kinda dose doesn't it
Same man
Wow.... Those last words buddy amazing... I gotta admit I love Star Fox, everything about those games, what the Snes represented in gaming technology to what the n64 did and the lost of star fox 2... I cancelled my preorder, after being in the shopping cart for over a month because reviews hated this game, hated everything about it, even someone out there was not able to finish the game neither review it...(doing so wouldn't affect metacritic scores, but still a lack of professionalism for the reviewer and website)...after a week of the game being release I told myself it's time to get this...I wasted $60 on less important stuff.... That was one of the best gaming decision I've ever had.... What an outstanding game, from the music to levels design...this is what gaming is...having a blast and fun.... I got used to the controls like you said and when I went back to star fox 64 I was moving the control to aim...smh.... Great video review and amazing job....
Do an aileron roll!
Airleron Roll
no
Yes.
Aileron Roll
Airlion Rorl
Throwing some serious shade at Polygon haha
+Don Jido Polygon is seriously cancer, though.
STAR FOX ZERO DLC: JAMES McCLOUD STORY/PROLOGUE CAMPAIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+SuperVGMaster
Hell yes. That or a Starfox anime
+MrTardman81 ANIME!!!!!!! YAAAASSSS!!!!!
I don't watch anime, SO SORRY!!!! I don't have anything against it, I just don't know where to go, or where to start. Crunchy roll???? Sorry for screaming so much.
I dunno about you guys, but I'd play Starbeard 64
Am I the only one who had absolutely no problem with the controls?
Nope, you're not alone.
It's really mixed
+Kyle Ruggieri Nope. I personally love the new controls.
*****
There is a multitasking element to it. Once I realized I could still technically play on the gamepad's screen during most cutscenes and sneak in a few extra skills, I started to warm up to them. Now I love the depth they add to the game.
They clicked with me after the ocean bit on Stage 1. Grasping the controls is as simple as waving the gamepad around and going like "oh, that's how aiming works"
That message of yours at the end is one of the main reasons for why your my favorite reviewers JIrard. You are the only one I know that actually completes game, good or bad, and look deep into it. And in the end you give your voice and your voice alone for your reviews. I will continue to support and watch each and evry one of your videos Jirard.
And as for the question at the end, I feel like I would be either Peppy or Slippy. Mostly because I;m annoying to people and because I love shouting the same thing over and over again
So it seems like this game suffers from Kid Icarus Uprising syndrome, although that's not terrible.
For anyone not familiar with Uprising, it had the same problems to a lesser extent. The controls, when you first boot up the game, are wonky at best. When you get used to them, the game really gets amazing.
Honestly I was wondering whether the controllers were unforgivably bad or just difficult to get used to. I'm happy to see it's the former. Now all I have to do is find time to play it between Dark Souls 3, Enter the Gungeon, and Hyrule Warriors Legends. By the way, DO NOT COMPLETE HYRULE WARRIORS LEGENDS HOLY SHIT. 9 new main campaign missions in addition to all the unlocks scattered across 6 different adventure mode maps is a daunting task that would probably kill Jirard.
To be honest I think Uprising wouldn't work with a different control scheme.
imma be that odd man out here after finishing the game completely medals and all...I still find assault better in terms of visuals as it fits the tone of the plot also I find the music just slightly better but that's just my opinion, not saying zero is bad it's just "ok" for me. =( I just feel nintendo could have done better.
+♫HyperGamerz53♫ I'm actually kinda with you there. I like almost all Star Fox games (except for Command) but when it comes to Zero and Assault, I perfer Assault. Not to mention the Arwings control a bit better (Zero's controls are okay though imo) and I don't care what anyone says, I think Fox on the ground in Assault controls a lot better than the Chicken Walker in Zero.
Starfox Adventures is still my favorite Starfox game. :p
Stairfax temperatures?
+Hahn95 Stairfax Temperatures is still the worst game by far. It's not a Star Fox game.
+gamephreak5 Yeah I agree. It should have just been released as it was originally planned instead of having star fox plastered onto it. Then maybe it would be seen as Rare's last hidden gem, rather than the black sheep of a franchise, because its not a horrible game. Its just... not Star Fox.
+gamephreak5 *worst Starfox game. As a game it's actually really good.
+gamephreak5 not a chance, Command is byfar the worst, my ratings currently for the series:
SNES: 7/10
SF2: 9/10
SF64: 8.5/10
Adventures: 7/10
Assault: 8.6/10
Command: 3/10
643D: 5/10 (Failed remake)
Zero: 8.7/10, best in awhile I guess, but I was still expecting a hell of a lot more.
Now THIS is a gamer. THIS is a reviewer. This is why I look at your videos and 1 thing I need to say: Online in a game doesn't make a game a disappointing game.
It's a very subjective review though.
+omensoffate Just likeevery review on any review site.
A channel worth subscribing to! Thanks for finally recommending @youtube
Do an aileron roll !!!!
I actually love the gyro controls
+Dual Screen Gaming They're alright...not the best though...
***** they actually are the best
The game is built around the motion controls very well, so it's very satisfying once you master it
+Sto Bron And I actually love sticking my dick in a cheese grater..
That is Falco exactly
So it's basically StarFox 4: Episode 1
No, it's Starfox 4 episode Zero
I enjoy the game, looks absolutely stunning. Just makes me sad to have waited all this time for a new starfox and they couldn't even give an option to use different controls. Bummer to the maximum.
This Star Wars game looks awesome.
...I've beaten this game GamePad only.
You can adjust the control settings to MOSTLY play like SF64.
Limit motion controls. Just switch view points and reset aiming cursor when needed. Not 100% fixed, but like 90% perfect.
Considering Zero's pretty easy, it's okay. Good game. 👍
I loved that bit with the moving logo. Nice reference with the Star Fox 64 easter egg :D
