How To SELL Like An Artist
Вставка

- I NEVER believed in marketing. For as long as I’ve been making films on UA-cam, I’ve done my best to avoid the world of paid ads, trends, and Tik Toks.
What I didn’t realize was that I’d completely missed the point of what it means to market your work. Promoting your products, servies, or art does not always mean following trends or making UA-cam shorts. In fact, it can be as creative as the artwork itself.
This is the story about how a couple of UA-cam videos changed my entire perspective on marketing my films.

"You have to be a fan of your own stuff" best takeaway quote from this video!
reminds me of a german rapper who was asked in a interview who his favorite rapper was and he was like "me, every artist should give that answer..." and thats kinda the same vibe, even though it might sound arrogant, it should just be true...
Ou yeah
gotta leave a comment for that
I remember Burnie from Rooster Teeth saying something like that on the Drunk Tank (now Rooster Teeth Podcast)!! 🐓
best!
I love this perspective. I love that idea of building a world around our art. I realized for myself I stopped sharing so much and developed a fear of looking like I had a huge ego and would be drawing too much attention to myself - but it’s actually not about us - it’s the creative work we pour into, the beauty we share, the joy we spread, the connection we make to others. What I was truly afraid of was what other people thought! This gives me so much to think about.
Same! I had the same feeling when I was trying to promote this series. I was constantly worried that I was being annoying or arrogant because I was posting so much about it, but it turns out that people were only more supportive.
I keep trying to remind myself that big cooperations have no shame when they spam you with newsletters or ads. So why would people get annoyed if you're actually putting in the effort to make your marketing engaging and colorful.
@@RyanNgFilms to some ppl u probably are annoying but that is just their perception
I agree
In that same interview, there was a line that really stuck with me.
Tyler talked about how artists should post and promote their art. He mentioned discovering Rex Orange County after seeing one of his music videos and thinking it was amazing. Next thing you know, he flew Rex to Los Angeles to record a song together.
The quote was: "You never know who is watching."
I resonate with this so hard. "Selling myself" or creating promo after a project doesn't come easy to me. Sometimes I worry about it coming across as cringe, desperate, or even corny. So I end up just posting a few stories on ig and calling it a day. But after pouring our hearts and souls into a project, I think we owe it to ourselves to be our biggest support. Cause if WE don't care, then who will? We're doing a service to ourselves and to others by contributing our art.
Thanks for sharing this Ryan! Really needed this perspective!
THANK YOU for such a thoughtful comment Annie 🫶
a line from an Isaiah Rashad song comes to mind with your comment: “who’s gonna sing your song if you don’t play it”
it starts with us❕keep on
Love this! A few weeks ago, I heard someone say "Let the art be the art, and the marketing be the marketing" and in that moment, my hubris, my ego dissolved. Promoting my work doesn't have to diminish it; it just helps more people find it.
Idk what they were thinking, but if ur selling art, that doesn't apply
I can't lie this is the coolest shit ive watched in a minute.
That moment you had watching tyler that day? I just had it watching you.
Thank you bro, Thank You!!
Thank you so much man. This comment means more than you know! ❤
Literally came here to comment the same thing bro.
The struggle is real, but when you start making art for other people (meaning you have a message and you think it’s valuable to others) it makes marketing easier and easier. Happy to see you back man!
Yes, exactly!
I'm blessed today Ryan posted
Yeah 😭
be a fan of your own self
Loved the fact that Tyler's song "Can I get a kiss" sound track was playing in the background.... That was genius
Haha thank you man!
"you have to be a fan of your own art" - this is such a great reminder for why I do what I do... because I fkn love it and I believe so deeply in the impact the stories I tell could have on other people. So I need to make sure more people hear them 🔥
I really appreciate your perspective on this. "Marketing is as much for the artist as it is for the audience"
amazing perspective. something i've done the last few years- and to hear you talk about it really validates my approach. be authentic, and the rest is easy.
Truly Inspiring. Love the concept of "Be proud of what you made, and be authentic"
This resonated with me way more than I expected. I was also, until recently, firmly in the "marketing is always inauthentic" camp but now realising that's not the case. Loved your take on it.
A big breakthrough for me was realising that if you tell anyone about your work (either IRL or by posting online), then you already are doing marketing! The YT algorithm is marketing, your titles and thumbnails are all part of your marketing, whether you like it or not.
Why not just do it in a way that feels intentional, in a way that's actually effective, and in a way that allows you to convey the emotions youre trying to convey through your art.
Great work man.
best perspective on this subject I have seen, I for one hate the word “content” when referring to my art but changing that word to message made me feel better about promoting it because ultimately anything attached to our art is our message, that includes the marketing aspect of it
Yes exactly! Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment Brianca!
this seriously changed something in me man, thank you so much and bless you.
Such an incredible video as always.
I highly relate to this one, as a creator I often feel like my posts MUST perform well and that social media is a shelf to show that I can get that high performance.
This has completely changed my prospective, I think it’s time to take a little more pride in every post, after all a bigger number is far less gratifying than the euphoria you get when what you work hard on is well received.
Thanks for this!
Max! I'm glad this was helpful in some way haha. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment
your editing is so amazing man, its something some people just skip pass it but damn even too the sound effects, love to see it.
absolutely spectacular video wow the editing the message everything, subbed!
This was incredible. Tyler's words were spot on but the points you were able to share from your own perspective are incredibly helpful
what a perfect way to look at marketing. So excited for this series!!!!!!!
Literally cannot believe the talent you have Ryan at story telling and filmmaking. You're absolutely goated
Marketing can be the TOUGHEST work to make in your life, because you not only have to learn how to sell yourself, but also learn how to be yourself
Ohhhkay, this makes so much sense!! I've always felt like "promoting" is inauthentic but it isn't when you do it with the right intention or do it your way. so marketing can be an art too! Damnnnn. Beautiful vid💗
Thank you brother!
Bro I remember chatting with you about this conversation and that exact tyler clip. The converse interviews are honestly gems everyone should watch! Love this so hyped for the rest of the series!
Love the webcam idea -> love how you put marketing in newspaper words and the smooth animation - love the shot selection on close ups with painting and also another version of you coming into frame
So dope
Ryan using Ryan bear post-it notes just makes so much sense
😂I actually just got a pushie of him. He will be in more videos
Brother I absolutely LOVED the format of this video. Artsy af but straight to the point (not ranty) and inspiring. Great job. Thank you for uploading this.
This video unlocks many things in my head.
Seeing the marketing as a new opportunity to create content around the primary content is an amazing way of seeing things !
Very cool video Ryan, I gave it my best genuine like for a long time!
I clicked on this video waiting for footage from my gopro to download, and it pulled me in so well I couldn't click off. The storytelling in this video is much more prominent than the message itself and that says a lot about what you're capable of. Whatever your film is, I want to watch it.
There is a ton of value and great advice for the viewer in this video! Well done!!
Bro this video is GOLD!!
The story, the editing, the wisdom!!
GOOOOLD!!!
I love the way you structure your films! Stunning shots AND such useful information. I am so excited about this series!
Thank you so much Jordan!!!
Bro your editing is top tier!!!!
Great Vid! We love your channel, keep doing what your doing 🔥👏🏾
I just watched all your videos. Glad I found you. So refreshing.
Much love Omar! Thank you for watching man, it means more than you think.
This was a great way to find your channel. Impeccable story telling brother ❤
bro this hit. love this video so much.
Tyler has been in my head for the last 3 years tellin me to push my craft so thank you for putting this video out.
Love that you had this breakthrough! Marketing can be just as creatively fulfilling as filmmaking. Great video as always!! 💛🙌
Thanks guys!!! Lots of love ❤❤❤
i know we talked about this a lot in person but so glad i have a video now to go back to and remind myself! love you man and so proud that you got this out AND marketed it ;)
Dude thank you so much man, this means a lot ❤❤❤So much love
so true. this editing is so cute to me btw-- keep doin yo thing dude
Great start to the series! I really like how you told the story of how you came to these realizations about marketing. It makes it feel like you are learning these lessons that you picked up from around you with the viewers, and you're sharing your experiences rather than telling others how they should carry themselves. Again, great editing, and I loved the detail of showing the poster you were painting at the start of the video, and then showing it up on the wall later on. Nice touch!
Thank you for always writing such thoughtful comments George!! It really means the world ❤
man crazy how it this video came right when i needed it!! cheers
This was a really good reminder to watch. I've been struggeling a lot with marketing myself, because just as you, I always feel like a sellout doing it. But I guess it's really important to just find a way that feels genuine to you. Thank you for this wonderful video 🙏
Absolutely! It felt so unnatural to me when I started. Even promoting this series felt a little wrong haha. It got to the point where I had to close my eyes when I uploaded my instagram stories, but it turns out that people are totally chill with it and even more supportive than if you hadn't promoted it (as long as it's authentic haha).
Sometimes people just need a reminder to watch your stuff. They might have missed it the first time around. A reminder is not annoying at all (think about all the cooperations that spam your inboxes haha).
That soundtrack, score, is epic
Needed to hear this!!! Thanks Ryan!
Love this Ryan! I remember seeing that and I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to understand what it meant to market too. The argument you're making here unlocks even more for me. Thanks for putting this video together!
So glad this helped in some way Andrew!
By the time this video finished it had felt like only a minute had passed. Really enjoyed this and genuinely learned something important
Thank you so much Pat!!!
Bro, u and Tyler saved my day and maybe my EP, thank you brow
Perfect, you showed the before, the after, the process, and the feeling. Incredible work. You kept it short and balanced saying everything you needed too without talking too much. I’m inspired by your video, thank you for sharing.
I just love this content. Nice to e-meet you, can't wait to see more of your art
this video was so seamless and concise. Great job ryan
I'm glad Ady, thank you so much for watching!!
This is coming at the right time as I've been working for almost a month after not uploading since the new year, need to create MORE stuff for it to be seen.
Love this video! Marketing itself is an artform, and good marketing is art, and it allows you to finance your art. It's a win/win when done right, too many low effort scammy marketers give it a bad rep, but just don't be like them!
I love the concept of world- building, I feel like one of the things I'm most passionate about is developing a style that feels like me and it just so happens that that's good marketing. Phenomenal vid Ryan!❤
This video is so well done. And thanks for the great reminder to have fun with marketing.
BEAUTIFUL RYAN I’m so excited for the rest of this series
THANK YOU JEFFERY! ❤❤❤
Thank you for making this video. Thank you for sharing your perspective. Be proud on your own art!
Awesome video. I was captivated throughout. Can’t wait for what’s next!
I never thought a video about marketing would make me shed a tear lmao! Such an inspiring video, so beautifully crafted and presented. Thank you for sharing this gem ✨
Man, I’m so happy i stumbled upon this video today. Got a new subscriber. it’s exactly what i needed. thx ❤
I really love this. I can see your authenticity in this video, the stuff that makes you unique and i really think that people will make it in life with whatever they are doing by being themselves 100%. Thank you for this 🙏
Love your aesthetic and editing!
Thank you man!
Thanks for the perspective Ryan, i never looked at it like that
Ryan, you are a true artist. Love your videos!
Very well done. I ate two bowls of cereal while watching and it was a very enjoyable experience. Great message, cool visuals, thank you.
Marketing is the hardest part about being an artist. But doing it your way, is the best way. I got inspired by Max kolo with his graphic design schemes in nyc. Marketing then became making little art pieces in doodle and sticker form and spreading them around my town. Just get yourself out there in your own way and people will see you. Great video as always Ryan!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment man! Just checked out Max's stuff, so beautiful.
Dope video. Thank you for sharing. Creating soul-sell-y content on social media feels so terrible and inauthentic but nowadays it feels like everyone online is telling you it's the only way to grow-- Your perspective really affirms my love for worldbuilding without necessitating viral-trend-chasing. Ur a beast
I love you so much Ryan. I feel SO inspired and hungry after watching your videos. Every single time!!!
Perfect format, short concise helpful and well edited keep going chief!
this is the smoothest promo that i ever watched
Please I beg you keep giving us magical knowledge that you have that comes from every working hard hours you put, thank you so much ❤
Ryan you are a quality storyteller & we need up to 30 Minutes long videos from you . 💙
Even 1 Hour if possible 😂.
I love everything about your videos from Editing to Presentation.
Thanks for sharing that eureka moment, I think a lot of people also turn on their light bulb like I did thanks to you, thanks again.
1 minute in I love your style bro. Subscribed
always love going back to that tyler interview, shout out felicia the goat
I swear this video just turned on my light bulb thank u so freaking much man ❤❤all love to u
Loved this Ryan!!
really needed to hear this! thank you
When he walked into his own memory… lol amazing. I met tyler once and life was all his dream and you were living in it
Man I needed this video, that Tyler clip also resonated with me a while back, but I've always hated the idea of following trends or appeasing the algorithm. Thanks to this video marketing doesn't feel as soul sucking, keep it up man
Amazing vid, as a fellow filmmaker in the making I really enjoyed seeing the way you made a story out of this vid and were honest about your struggles.
I swear this has to be one
Of the most important videos I’ve watched in a very long time✨✨
Timing is such a funny thing the other day I was thinking about you and how mushed I missed the videos so happy your back to uploading
You did a really good job on this video, aesthetics, edit, audio mix, transitions, shot composition, animations. They were executed so well that everything felt smooth and well connected. Enjoying the double Ryans as well as action + narrative are more engaging than narrative alone. Skill and respect.
Thank you so much man! Haha yea I'm playing around with a new camera and wanted to try some new editing work. Thank you for pointing that stuff out!
@@RyanNgFilms Anytime man keep this going, it's incredible. Side note, the texture on paint looks incredible on camera O_O.
Thanks man. I was about to give up. your video encouraged me to keep going.
Truly amazing video, your message and perspective was so helpful. I think artists like us are kind of obsessed with being authentic, we dont wanna copy or just do whatever is trending we want a challenge and to be original, but your right we dont have to sacrifice our souls to do that! we just gotta be proud and showcase what deserves to be shared with the world !
not gonna lie.... you just blew my mind! i really needed this video bro. thank you
Glad you learned that less is more, and consistency is key
Love the video. Really helped me. And bro you got some nice legos haha
Wow this was actually a great perspective about marketing. I have some video content I spent months on to only just posted a story of it. But now I'm thinking of revisiting some to edit again.
Much love Jacky, so glad this helped!
great video, showed up exactly when I needed to hear it
Hey Ryan! Thank you for making this video 🙏✨
Dude, I needed this! Thank you so much for sharing
this gave me chills. hope this blows up.
Man you are switching my brain too, it's like a domino... Thanks man, I am proud to click and watch the intire video
Such a good video! I’m a filmmaker myself and can get so frustrated being pulled between honing my craft while also creating a world/marketing those projects all by myself but I think you/Tyler are totally right in seeing it as an extension of the work. It’s so essential and if you do it right, just as fun and exciting as the rest of the process.
Thank you for the kind words Samuel!! I'm so glad you were able to get something out of this ❤
I needed this, thank you for making this video!!
