Backwards compatibility was literally the make or break for me getting a Switch 2. I hope the first party games get patches similar to PS4-PS5 or Smart Delivery on Xbox because games like the Xenoblade trilogy and Three Houses need the resolution boost and actual anti-aliasing so badly Also NSO carrying over is huge because it means no more waiting for legacy Nintendo games to be dripfed into the service the way Virtual Console had to restart from scratch every gen between Wii, Wii U and 3DS even when the latter both had an eShop
idk if a performance boost would do much for Three Houses, I love the game but the built-in graphics are rather poor. Part of me thinks it started development as a 3DS title that got moved over to Switch because Engage looks incredible compared to Three Houses

You guys act like this is a new thing, Nintendo had many backwards compatible systems, the GameBoy Advanced could play GameBoy games, DS could play GBA games, 3DS could play DS games, Wii could play GameCube games, Wii-U could play Wii games. Usually when a Nintendo system isn't backwards compatible there is a good reason or the next system uses a different physical game format like Wii-U to Switch, Switch of course cartridges because portable system and Wii-U DVD disc format and now with digital copies all of these companies want your digital library to carry over, they don't want to create new online shops, make you create new accounts, collect your personal data once again... I think it was very obvious if Nintendo does a Switch 2 that they would make it backwards compatible.
@Official_RetroMania yes, I know and I appreciate them for that. But many of those games are locked out unless you repurchase or get streaming services, which as matty alluded to as renting not owning" Those older system will not last forever then the game will be lost but what does.
@@deathechovii I agree on this one but I also understand how hard it is to bring these games on all modern systems, sadly games are unique for example with DVD movies you can put them on any DVD player and they will always work doesn't matter which model, year, company player you are using, sadly the same can't be said for video games, hence why I think PC is the closest one when it comes to preservation perfection even though some very, very old PC games from like 30 or 40 years ago do sometimes struggle or need workarounds to work on modern Windows 10+. I don't think there is a perfect solution to this issue, the best we can do is create pressure so that these companies Nintendo, Sony, Xbox... I have gotten my Nintendo Switch OLED a year after it came out and I've gotten around 30 games on physical cartridges. Now this announcement for backwards compatibility on the switch 2 makes me wanna buy more physical switch games before they go up in price.
My guess is that was Nintendos intention by releasing the backwards compatible info before the switch 2 announcement. Some of their recent 1st party games underperformed this year, and a big reason for that is not knowing if these games will work on the next system is my guess, people are saving their money for the near future hype rather than buying something they may have to trade in with their old switch if they choose to do that when the switch 2 comes out
The Wii and WiiU had backwards compatibility with GameCube and the GameCube could play GBA games with the attachment. Only the Switch wasn't backwards compatible so, saying that Nintendo hasn't done backwards compatability for most of their consoles is simply not true. They've had 3 consoles without backwards compatability (excluding NES cause it was their first) and now they're about to have a 4th console with backwards compatability plus every one of their handheld consoles have been backwards compatible since the GameBoy Color.
Well in that aspect you could also play GameBoy games on the SNES with the Super GameBoy adapter. You could play GB - GBC on the GBA. You could play GBA on the DS. You could play DS games on the 3DS. The Wii U however did not play Gamecube discs but it could play Wii games. Wii played gamecube discs (not the Wii mini though).
For consoles: Nintendo has released 7 systems between NES and Switch. Wii & Wii U are the only ones of those seven that have any form of BC. If we're excluding NES, that's still only 2/6, one-third. For handhelds: GBC, GBA, DS, and 3DS are all backwards compatible, but GBA and DS both have revisions that remove backwards compatibility. I wouldn't mention revisions normally - I didn't mention the Wii Mini - but for the DS specifically, the DSi removed backwards compatibility _while introducing new features,_ rather than it just being a cost-cutting measure, but since, as far as I know, there aren't any physical games that will run on a DSi but not a DS, that revision I _will_ include as not being backwards-compatible, for losing the GBA slot. That leaves out Virtual Boy(a
It just makes sense that you could bring your Switch collection to next gen considering how huge the Switch library actually is. It will definitely help selling more units until Nintendo drops the big Switch 2 exclusives and I also think we will have some cross platform games much more than what we have seen with the Wii-U and the Switch, of course games on Switch 2 will look and run better.

2:00 ". . . reselling Gamecube games many of us *happily* bought over and over again!" Maybe it's because the first systems I've played were Genesis, NES, and Windows 95, with "backwards compatibility" not being much of a thing prior to PSX into PS2(key word is *"much:"* I'm fully aware backwards compatibility in video games existed as early as 1980 or so), but I still don't understand why this is a make-or--break situation - especially in the case of Nintendo, who has released *far* more systems that _aren't_ backwards-compatible than _are,_ and this has *never* affected their bottom line. After the early-mid 90s(depending on geographical location) - right before backwards compatibility started actually worming its way into being a more regular thing - far less people were selling old systems to buy new ones, and even when backwards compatibility became pretty standard, you still had far less people selling their older systems to contribute toward buying a new system. There are definitely _some_ people who still do, and _some_ people who won't buy a system without backwards compatibility, but even few people who say they won't buy a system without BC these days often do anyways. (At least anecdotally, but going off different message boards over almost 25 years, I can point out a couple hundred anecdotes.) Switch BC especially right now, because even though The Big N got the two most popular ways to play Switch games outside the Switch shut down, it's not like you're not 15 seconds away from finding replacements that are very quickly just as or _more_ functional than the predecessor. *(Add.*: MVG did a video on BC for a Switch 2 many months ago; IIRC, the way the Switch is set up, they'd likely not crank out better resolution or frame rate on games because you have to run the entire Switch OS to run the game _and_ there'd need to be code manually changed for every game that intended to use the improved hardware; this is money & labor on the dev side and is not likely to happen to the massive amount of Switch games. I'd check the vid myself.) I've also never seen the point of paying for a subscription service to play 20-to-35+-year-old games that I can play as intended on the original hardware and a CRT, or that I can play with the exact same controller and TV on a thumb drive that costs less than a year of NSO(the normal one, not with the expansion) and will let you play pretty much any game you've bought on the Wii VC, Wii U eShop, or that is on NSO. Both of these options are also FAR better for games preservation, something that several companies - *especially* Nintendo, with being religiously litigious - are not a fan of at all. My copy of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, something that was in my family before I was even born, still works perfectly fine on an NES(as long as the pins are clean). The NSO version of Ocarina of Time is less accurate to my cartridge than playing it on my computer in 2005. Why would I *"happily"* buy these games "_over and over again"_ from a company that's trying to sell me a product I've already bought that's redundant at best, a step down(or multiple steps down; see the Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3/X360) at worst? If they continuously disrespect my wallet, why would I "just go with it" and fill their coffers? I'm not beholden to them *in the slightest.* The problem is not backwards-compatibility. The problem isn't even re-selling old games, remastered or just ported. The problem is that people will pay for this stuff with little to no question, and continue to do so. This is even MORE ridiculous when we're currently at a state that you could live the rest of your natural life, never re-play a game, and still never run out of new games before you're gone. *The customer has, and has ALWAYS had the power in this situation; all the customer has to do to come out on top is exercise a modicum of restraint and turn a blind eye to the FOMO - especially when what you're missing out is something you've probably already bought multiple times.*
I think backwards compatibility is going to be a lot better than it needs to be, and it'll end up being a big "feature" in and of itself. Since it's using the same architecture as the original Switch, they will be able to improve frame rates and stuttering just like emulators can (or so I've heard). According to their recent briefing, over 100 million people turned their Switch on in the past year, that's a massive active install base that Nintendo would be smart to please.
you're insane if you think the switch 2 could give you any form of performance update. have you seen the amount of work hackers put in to jump 30 to 60 fps? most of these games are set to not do it on their own and most of the companies arent gonna go back to their stuff to put out updates to change hardcoded graphics settings for you. not when they can sell you the remaster for 70$
I think nintendo fans might be putting the cart before the horse a bit here, mean they haven't specified whether this means they're including a way to play Switch carts. The Switch 2 may be digital only or they might switch carts and not include a way to play physical Switch titles for all we know at this point, heck it could be a per title situation like on Xbox where theres only a specific list of backwards compatible titles, and expectations should be set accordingly. The digital library or even limited titles being back compat would still be a huge boon, but until Nintendo gives specifics lets not get too excited. Personally I just can't wait for it's release when tons of kids trade theirs in so I can finally pick up an OLED version of the Nvidia Shield with attached screen and controller at something at least close to what I consider a reasonable price.
Precisely Nintendo said backwards compatibility not that the old switch physical games can be played on the new system 🤔 Could be. Digital system could not be. We don’t know🃏 I’m content with the physical games I have currently on my oled switch, if I get a new system? It will be completely dependent on what games are available on the new system and IF theirs actually going to be physical games available to play 🤔
Nintendo has not specified that the successor will run PHYSICAL games... I have a feeling Nintendo is referring to Eshop games only... But lets wait and see
This is most likely. Modern Vintage Gamer did a video that explained why very little would change even with BC on a "Switch 2" months ago. I'd recommend watching it for myself, but the tldr is that, with the Switch's architecture, they basically need an instance of the Switch OS running within the Switch 2(similar to how you had an instance of the Wii OS on the Wii U) to even run the Switch games, and would then need to go through the code for each game individually to have it take advantage of whatever extra power is left over in new system, something that would take a lot of time and labor with how many Switch games there are. Explanation is really remedial, would again suggest checking MVG's video.
Out of all the Xenoblade games, I think Xenoblade Chronicles 2 would benefit the most with Switch 2 upgrade because it has the most trouble keeping a stable frame rate. Also in case people don't realize it, Japan considers software as both physical and digital games. Nintendo always put both physical and digital together when they talk about their software sales, so yes Switch 2 has physical BC. They would've been more specific about digital if it was digital only. You can also say that the software is in the physical cartridge. Many people seem to be overthinking this. Don't forget that more than half of their sales are physical, so they would be too much demerits if they say digital only especially with making the announcement right before holiday sales.
Jep, Xenoblade 2 could profit from it with stable framerate and resolution (that is not stable either and when resolution falls the anti aliasing is falling apart). A patch with some more graphical benefits would be great too, like better Lod and less pop ups (and longer viewdistance). Like grass to the horizon, not only like 50-100 metres and more details for titans and landmasses in the background.
I think any time someone says that the games are backwards compatible, it's insinuated physical. I think if it wasn't they'll say it outright or face a bunch of angry collectors. I could always be wrong though.
The big pokemon leak says scarlet and violet are getting next gen updates to them. Also sorry but i dont think the story is good at all lol its just a typical pokemon story broken into its 3 components (gyms, evil team, legendary pokemon)
So this kinda suggests that the leaks of the console could be more probable too?? I mean if the cartridges can be used in thinking that it’s not going to slot into a bulky home traditional console 🤷♂️
I was expecting it, especially from Nintendo as they have been good with BC (they often stuck to the same or similar architecture), but it's best to not take such things as a given.
@@dolurosu Well, I often do expect it because Nintendo has historically gone out of its way to provide it. And the only times they didn't do BC is when the media format switched from cartridges to optical discs to cartridges again.
It runs absolutely fine for everyone that actually has the game, only silly people who just watched UA-cam videos of the game have "complaints" And UA-camrs fishing for views
They did not say physical cartridges yet so while i think switch 2 will but i need 100% confirmation that physical media works too not just digital and NSO purchases
My switch is a dust collector at home, never got into TOTK even though I loved the 1st one (played it on PC emulated from a WiiU) I just bought the Ezio collection and forcing myself to use it
Man having backwards compat for their switch succesor has the potential to become their biggest selling point depending on how many titles will it cover and its something that if perfected will be huge for consoles moving forward (it is one of the reasons im still a pc only type of person) Also Day 3 of asking matty to review the gothic games from pyranha bytes in every new video

Retrocompat at this point is mandatory. People have huge digital libraries and the possibility of having them transfered and used to the new system is a great feature to attach consumers. Like it or not, the PS5 is sucessful because of the PS4. Consumers transitioned from the 4 to the 5 because of the digital library. Microsoft lost the first real digital generation. Having retrocompat is something mandatory to keep consumers. The PS6 will be compat with 4 and 5, same as the new Xbox.
Unfortunately, even if the new system could improve older games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will not get improved frame rates. They are hard coded to their current frame rates. The sandwich buffs are tied to frame rate, not actual time. Things are hard coded to drop frames when they get a certain distance away or when they are behind the camera. Though frame drops in certain areas may be improved.
I just wonder if it will be digital back compat or if they are going to have a reader for compatability with Switch carts. I've held off on getting a Switch so looks like I'll have a decent selection of titles that hopefully will be able to take advantage of the better hardware.
I really hope im right about this but im gonna make a prediction. I think Nintendo might be stepping into the VR/augmented reality market. Its becoming more and more popular. Nintendo is known for always having some sort if gimmick. A comfortable pair of glasses that support AR/VR games would be awesome. Something like google glass perhaps? Glasses are an easy periferal addition While maintaining the switch's portability and docking abilities. I could see them doing a screen feature like on the 3DS as well. Tho i feel that wouldnt work as well as a pair of glasses and a regular screen. I could see a packaged deal for $4/5 and then a console only version for like $300/$350. Just a guess. Would be fun if im right. But whatever the case. Just glad my Switch games are gonna carry over.
The fact is this the one system that absolutely needed back compact. Almost every game released since totk and in the last couple years, even first party ones lately run terribly or with stutters. Even zelda echoes and I'm hearing Mario and Luigi brothership which threre is no excuse. Many of us are also waiting for the switch 2 to play games we already own and Nintendo knows that. The blowback they would get if it didn't would be next level. And we will never forget about scarlet violet. A good game that looked and performed quite poor.
the only time remaster's should ever come out is from 10+ years only sony keeps rereleasing a game remaster looking at last of us and horizon zero dawn alone every other year ps4 60$ version ps4 pro 70$ version ps5 80$ or 25$ upgrade ps4 version ps5 pro 120$ version people want to complain about nintendo doing that is insane they only made like 9 remasters so far and they are from 16- 20 years ago metroid prime was only 40$ thats bull the only one to avoid is donkey kong country returns and mario vs donkey kong being 60$
I do agree that Nintendo remastering the older games is better, and even Wii U games as it allows them to be compatible with Switch. But Sony remastering recent games doesn't affect anyone who doesn't want to buy them. I myself just want Bloodborne to be remastered and ported to PC, as well as some games stuck on PS3. But I couldn't give two shits that they're remastering their other games, hell it even serves as experience for the developers making them and makes money that can go to games you'd actually want so it's not like it's a waste. There are other reasons to complain about Sony, but those remasters/remakes are not one of them imo. At least they aren't locking all their retro games behind a subscription, unlike Nintendo (that said, how they're doing it is not perfect either).
After watching this whole thing, a fitting start to the video would been the "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" theme playing and the black screen/white text title of "Matty Sets Himself Up For Disappointment". Nintendo has shown they do the bare minimum when it comes to upgrades. We're gonna be lucky to get a "OG Xbox game running on Xbox 360" experience for Switch games on the Switch successor.
Not anything new yes and no N64 not backwards compatible GameCube not backwards compatible Wii backwards compatible WiiU backwards compatible Switch not backwards compatible

have you seen the amount of work hackers put in to jump 30 to 60 fps?
most of these games are set to not do it on their own and most of the companies arent gonna go back to their stuff to put out updates to change hardcoded graphics settings for you. not when they can sell you the remaster for 70$
I just hope we get a free fidelity/performance boost patches for games like TotK
Welcome back to retro rebound "Today we are talking about current gen stuff"
Precisely Nintendo said backwards compatibility not that the old switch physical games can be played on the new system 🤔
Could be. Digital system could not be. We don’t know🃏
I’m content with the physical games I have currently on my oled switch, if I get a new system? It will be completely dependent on what games are available on the new system and IF theirs actually going to be physical games available to play 🤔
If you love Platinum games, please do a review for “The Wonderful 101 Remaster” it’s been remastered on PS4 and it’s Platinum at their best.
Nintendo has not specified that the successor will run PHYSICAL games... I have a feeling Nintendo is referring to Eshop games only... But lets wait and see
I don’t see Nintendo doing anything of this. The games will play sure but nothing else. I hope I’m wrong
I have a bunch of switch games already now do I have the time to play them? No but hey 😅 that’s what the backlog is for
Dude improving load times alone would be huge for me..
Are you worried about Cartridges not being compatible? Or did they pretty much confirm we’re good for our physical copies?
You do good videos but some of the comments about the switch in this video are wild. Most games run absolutely fine, very harsh
Like grass to the horizon, not only like 50-100 metres and more details for titans and landmasses in the background.
they did not mention if both physical and digital games will be backwards compatible yet
Pretty sure will be both, it’ll be stupid if they only did digital
@@coolchannelize15 they won’t leave out physical most of Nintendo’s game sales are physical
@@ItsallFunandGames-xk7sy yes that’s why I said they’ll do both
@@coolchannelize15 yea I @ the wrong person my bad lol meant to @ the original comment
I think any time someone says that the games are backwards compatible, it's insinuated physical. I think if it wasn't they'll say it outright or face a bunch of angry collectors. I could always be wrong though.
Faster loading times would be awesome!
The big pokemon leak says scarlet and violet are getting next gen updates to them. Also sorry but i dont think the story is good at all lol its just a typical pokemon story broken into its 3 components (gyms, evil team, legendary pokemon)
I would for sure replay bayonetta 3 with better framerate.
Good so that way I can keep playing my switch backlog and not leave them behind 😭
I’m so excited for Legends Z-A
4:47 ohhhh you just reminded me that road rash redemption plays like trash on the switch, maybe it will be great on the Switch 2
I would have been surprised if the Switch 2 was not backward compatible.
As for visual upgrades, Im expecting similar differences from PS1 to PS2.
So this kinda suggests that the leaks of the console could be more probable too?? I mean if the cartridges can be used in thinking that it’s not going to slot into a bulky home traditional console 🤷♂️
It’s going to be just a more powerful switch, it always has been
Im saving astral chain for the next switch
I thought it was a given that it would be backwards compatible. Most Nintendo systems are.
I also liked 3 hopes better than 3 houses🤷♂
Bayonetta 3 ran absolutely fine in handheld on my OLED 😁👍🏽
Didn’t on mine, looks like dog shit most of the time.
@nintendive I must be lucky 😁
It runs absolutely fine for everyone that actually has the game, only silly people who just watched UA-cam videos of the game have "complaints"
And UA-camrs fishing for views

They did not say physical cartridges yet so while i think switch 2 will but i need 100% confirmation that physical media works too not just digital and NSO purchases
To be fair, you don't own digital purchases either, especially with the VC Nintendo offered.
I see pokemon Violet… im worried
Nintendo don’t care about you or me but ima still get me a switch 2😂
But will the Switch 2 have physical games..?
I hope it plays sfc carts
My switch is a dust collector at home, never got into TOTK even though I loved the 1st one (played it on PC emulated from a WiiU) I just bought the Ezio collection and forcing myself to use it
Nintendo will probably sell the games again with small uppgrades.
just put the pokemon GBA games on some already
Switch 2 well sell 200M
Man having backwards compat for their switch succesor has the potential to become their biggest selling point depending on how many titles will it cover and its something that if perfected will be huge for consoles moving forward (it is one of the reasons im still a pc only type of person)
Also Day 3 of asking matty to review the gothic games from pyranha bytes in every new video
Im hyped
I can't get over the motorbike Pokémon lol.
Did they actually confirm carts are back compat or just the software?
🎉🎉
We're gonna be lucky to get a "OG Xbox game running on Xbox 360" experience for Switch games on the Switch successor.
got a secondhand switch sometime ago sold it again and i am back for gaming on my pc laptop best decision ever.
If it is not backwards compatible I will not be buying it lol sorry
Fax
Until they bring back the E-Shop, they can kick rocks. I'm not getting another god damn subscription service to play the old games i want.
Is Switch 2 going to be physically backwards compatible, digitally or both?
Backwards compatibility isnt anything new for nintendo. How did this change anything?
The current switch isn’t
Not anything new yes and no
N64 not backwards compatible GameCube not backwards compatible
Wii backwards compatible
WiiU backwards compatible
Switch not backwards compatible
@@MrRoundthetwist i mean its physically impossible to make gamecube compatible with n64 cuz n64 used cartridges same with the switch
It's simply good to have confirmation. Nintendo has been good with backwards compatibility, and I always expected the next console to be BC with the Switch, but it's never a given.
for me i need the switch 2 to have 60 fps, my motion sickness cant play otherwise
Makes me feel great knowing I skipped the first Switch! Lots of games to catch up on.
Trophy/Achievement system PLEASE.
I highly doubt it.

They do not do well with anything on youtube with Nintendo products. Lite one of the worst with copyright infringement. Nintendo is not good
Nintendo is trying to make up some face after their crap lawsuits and attacks on the emulation community. I hope the Switch 2 flops hard and brings them back to reality. They forgot their Wii U days, and they're awful to the gaming comunity.
