Rivulet's coat would be more dense to retain heat and allows them to slip and slide as gracefully as an otter, and Saint obviously has a full coat of fluff.

The real issue with the pipe-cleaners is that you CAN'T be the pipe-cleaning slug because that's a species that existed in what is literally "ancient times" comparatively to the time period you play in. Anywhere from hundreds to thousands to millions of years ago is when the ancients, and their pipe-slugs, were alive. I do believe the pearl could be related to slugcats, but if so, then that still doesn't mean slugcats *are* the pipe-cleaners. They would be far-off descendants of the pipe-cleaners or another ancient species after countless generations of evolution have completely reshaped them as a species. This is one of the best videos I have ever seen, only half way through, but the effort put in this “joke” video (how dare you this is one of the most important lore questions in the game) is amazing , the little animations will be the dead of me.
I always thought it was smooth, but somewhat squishy since they almost look transparent in the promo art, but have enough muscle to lodge a spear into a metal wall.

I feel like Slugcats would feel like sea lions with some extra slime and maybe a little less fur. Maybe when it's drier (which is pretty rare) their fur would be more noticeable but normally it just seems like they're smooth slimey guys.
13:55 That's a misreading of the pearl. Pebbles specifically comments on the simplicity of the blueprint compared to what would be expected of newer organisms. A modern specialized creature made to live underground would be purposed without eyes, but this one is old and so does have eyes, even though there's no need for them. That's why it's closer to a domesticated animal.
Yeah I misunderstood him there, rip to my grapple worm theory haha. Someone else suggested it may be an ancestor of something in shoreline due to the pearls location which is an interesting idea!
Many names that creatures call the slug cats are “Some sort of rodent” -echo, “a little beast!” -echo “little creature” -moon and in down pour “the irony is not lost on me, mouse!” - echo from downpour and last but not least “goodbye, wet mouse” -moon and the name slug cat originates from a comment on a rainworld video that was posted by the devs, and the name just kept running. Also slug cats are NOT pipe cleaners since in the bright magenta pearl (shoreline) moon reads “It is the genome for a purposed organism. A small slug to clean the insides of pipes.” And “When I came into this world there was very little primal fauna left. So it's highly likely that you are the descendant of a purposed organism yourself!” Now in this remember that the name slugcat is NOT cannon and that the slug to clean the inside of pipes is not moon referring to us nor who our descendants might be, and it is import to see that she said “it’s highly likely that you are the descendant of A purposed organism yourself!” Notice how she says “a purposed organism” and not the purposed organism, this further shows that slug cats are Not pipe cleaners nor descendants from pipe cleaners. Anyways thank ls for reading my rant :3 please go look at uraniumeater s video “ common misconceptions in rain world lore” in that they talk about what the origin of the slugcat is and explain it much better than me. Also I think that they are moist, with short hair that is slicked back and might be a bit ruff due to what they go through I also kinda agree with the dehydrated slug feeling. Anyways this is the end of my rant :3
I love how many scugs you featured in your animation, your style just works so well for them!! also mario the idea vs mario the man reference at 10:40 was golden 😂
This was a very insightful video, I will give some of my takes though! For turnarounds (the sound), I personally think thats probably just the rubble and stuff sliding under the sslugcat on the ground, as it sounds like rocks to me. Some of the sounds do sound rather sticky though! I personally think they have a somewhat damp latex-like skin, and it is supported that they are some kind of rodent due to some dialogue in game. Arti may be more dry, Rivulet is more damp, and Saint is the only fluffy one! I do also agree with the dolphin point that the Piperat Pioneer suggested! Oh also, naked mole rats are mostly hairless rodents
Ah I hadn’t considered that yeah could be rocks! As for the rodents people use the rodent connection as a reason for them having fur. Same way there are hairless cats and dogs they are an exception rather than the rule when people think of them :]
Yeah, sounded a bit to crunchy for me to think it's wet. It sounded to me like moving on a gravel path with a bit of dirt mixed in thats still damp after rainfall. Wich makes sense in the area it was recorded in, as there was dripping water.
My thought is that their texture is kinda like those slimes that feel wet but don't leave any residue or.. well, slime on you when you touch them. Smooth and damp to the touch but not sticky, soggy or slimy. Also very squimshy but not so squirmshy that you can sink your hand into their skin. They've got some consistency to them. AND NO FUR... They display no fur in cutscenes and if people only think they have fur because of the name, has no one considered that they kinda look cat-like and move like cats as well? They don't move super slow like slugs either, they just resemble a slug and a cat crossed together.
I think most slug cats are hairless, like a sphinx cat, and that without their hair they’re smooth. Like human skin. Or actually frog skin is a better comparison. Frog skin but warm. But then sometimes they can have fur (like saint) and then they are fuzzy.
I remember an old conversation and multiple mentions before DP came out that saint's "fur" is actually insulating gel, that he is a slimy little guy but then downpour isnt technically canon... so saint cant really confirm that it is true for all slugs
@@Bentrix18 But the whole story of Downpour takes place interspersed with the three main slugcat's campaigns! it's integrated in! none of the original slugcats have an ending that matters except hunter, and even then the only thing that matters is that Moon is revived. Why would you separate something that never mattered in the first place? On what basis?
Now i might be biased in saying this cause seals are my everything but i do think slugcats have like seal fur. Cause when you look at elephant seals you get the impression theyre all bald right, but they actually have short but thick fur that sticks to them when wet and i think that corresponds to the texture slugcats have in like cutscenes and stuff (they look smooth there) so i think slugcats have that niche of having thick skin and thick fat to protect them. Also slugcats are 100% equivalent to polecats, ill die on this hill any day
I think most people are treating the fact that saint has different texture as the exception rather than the rule. In my opinion, it is very likely the slugcats from different campaign would have different textures, to serve different purposes. Rivulet would be very slime and amphibian-like by necessity, while something like saint would be furry.
I love this video. It’s so good and has a shocking amount of effort and research put into it. Also Five Pebbles would totally post someone’s IP address (and then post more images of themself in the cat costume)
I believe the purple Pearl is referring to the void spawn (purely cuz I think it’s cool and it fits). Also Pebble implies that the creature DOES have eyes, as he says the technology wasn’t as advanced at the time, and the creature still resembled more of a domesticated animal. He says a creature made for living in the dark has no need for eyes implying the creature DID have eyes and it having eyes was a result of technology not being advanced enough to remove them. It wasn’t intentional for it to have eyes.
@@Notlutherr I like the idea that the void spawn are ancestors to slugcats, and that’s why the slugcat ghosts in the ascension endings look similar. Also if it’s relevant, I recently looked at the broadcast dialogues and one iterator describes slugcats as “creatures that go in pipes” if that’s anything (context was, they were talking about NSH training slugcats as messengers. Also I just looked at the void spawn wiki page and apparently coalescipedes and monster kelp can eat them, and lantern mice can absorb them to become gold, which is weird imo, I thought they were ghosts :/
lol great video, I remember participating in the tumblr polls for this! I was initially team otter fur, but you have opened my eyes to new possibilities of smooth beasts in this rained world

To be honest fur sounds like a disadvantage in their environment since they'd become too soggy and cold from the rain. it's a wet environment Although i'd like to think maybe it just depends on the slugcat, all are slimy, but some have fur. and others don't.
i'm kinda annoyed that you didn't go into the texture comparasion to different animals more. because the comparasion to seals is very much spot-on. they basically look almost exactly like the slugcats in the official art. especiallly when they're in an wet enviroment.
it is to be considered, that the name slug cat didn't come from the developers, they merely adapted it from what the community called it during early development. and if they were slimy like slugs, they could stick to vertical surfaces indefinitely. personally I'm imagining a dry, water repellent, but very slick, almost oily feeling surface like teflon or a sand snake, that only leaves invisible, slippery residue in the form of microscopic particles, it you pet a slonk for a while. (like cockpit spray or industrial dry lubricants feels on your hands) it just makes sense! you've never seen a slonk dripping wet, and a slowly replenishing epidermis made of a low friction, abrasion resistant bio polymer would be perfect for squeezing though tight spaces, and this would fit a purposed organism. ..also i think they'd feel firm, but pretty squishy at the same time, using subcutaneous blubber for insulation, rather than fur.
I'd like to mention one thing if it helps: One of the art things that were made to announce Downpour's launch had VERY thin fur-like things on the 5 downpour slugcats. Opinion: Maybe it's like that one person said, the fur adapts to the times the creatures are living in, which happens a lot of times in real life. But honestly, i think everyone can have their own headcannons, wether they are slimy, smooth, furry, or not any of that, it's all ok!
Riv is a slippery little guy, saint is floof critter, the rest of them are probably like otters? whatever it is, I imagine them being weirdly squishy. Not like a water balloon, but also not like they're just chubby (except gourmand obviously)- some weird, unnatural squishiness.
i think the slugcat would probably be atleast slightly wet if not naturally because of the ground being wet cause of the rain. oh yea and side note i think the pearl that is about slugcats may be actually about leeches or maybe compared to an iterator a leviathan cuz it doesn't make sense for a pearl about slugs to be in shoreline before moon's collapse if it fell from her city or something
My Headcanons: Survivor: Smooth Monk: Slightly fuzzy, Fuzz is soft Hunter: Smooth, But slightly rough Rivulet: Smooth, Thin layer of oily slime Artificer: Slightly fuzzy, Fuzz is rough and hard Gourmand: Smooth Spearmaster: Smooth Saint: Very floofy, Very soft. Enot: F**k off, I ain't touchin' that thing!
@@EggDeliverybutBasic Monk has a layer of very short fur, A little longer than velvet. Saint has long and fluffy fur, Like you'd expect on an arctic creature. Edit: Arti's fur is like crusty velvet.
very cool, but HOW did you not mention this part from the inv ending: (this is after saint claims to have gotten a haircut): Fur? Since when did members of your species have fur? You can't recall ever getting a "haircut" in your entire life. They're seeming more and more foreign to you. Could they really be an eligible mate? and i know you came to the conclusion they don't have fur, but its still surprising this wasnt brought up. and also, nice artstyle, looks very cool
Yeah! Also, we have furles cats already in the real world. I just assume a slugcat is like that, but slightly slimy so they can slip and slide when they need.
@@Notlutherr i mean yeah, its teeeechnically non-canon but it would be very strange if in this parallel non-canon universe all slugcats had a different texture for some reason lol
I still think there is slime. Every creature in our world with similar frequent abrasions to the skin has either fur or scales. The only other precedent for that level of protection is glycoprotein production (mucus) on the skin for aquatic creatures. The “rain world” would keep the skin moist due to humidity. If we assume that the slugcat’s skin is punctured frequently with sharp edges of pipes and frames. They would not survive without something like slime.
I don’t know how to resolve Joar saying they are not slimy. Maybe it could be a mucus that doesn’t easily break from the skin. This wouldn’t feel like slime
Yeah I think part of the smooth could be adapted scales or something, they could also just have very thick skin as they don’t really need to obey our rules. From a more realistic stand point I agree they’d need some protection:]
I always assumed it was like smooth fur where if you brush it the way it goes it remains unchanged and stays smooth but brushing against its direction makes it feel more bristley
I'm surprised nobody brought up the word "oily" in the midst of all this. Some got close with the seal or otter texture answers, though. I figured they would have something of a sealskin texture, their body producing oils that keeps them waterproof while also giving them the slip-'n'-slide skills they're known for. And oil absolutely picks up dirt and debris while keeping pipes lubricated, with a thin coat of hair adding further surface area to catch extra dirt and grime. And the thing about being chinchilla texture is, if your fur is too dense, you will be susceptible to mold growing directly on your skin because it can't dry out. You literally can't get a chinchilla wet, it will get sick. They bathe in dust instead to keep themselves clean and dry. But seals, otters and other such semi-aquatic or aquatic mammals are built to get wet often and not get skin problems for it, while also having adaptations to keep them from freezing to death. Because if you're constantly wet, you'll lose heat at an alarming rate, and the ways animals deal with this in the real world is by either being a fish, having blubber or having a high metabolism that makes them need to eat way, WAY more. Otters have a high metabolism and can't really hibernate, and rivulet is less of a fish and more of a salamander, so that leaves the blubber option seen in seals, which also tracks due to their chubby, squishy bodies. And as the environment changes, it's easy to see them getting more fluff and less waterproofing for saint, or a more oily body and less fat storage for rivulet (aka higher metabolism), or dryer/smoother skin and no hair for artificer so they don't set themselves on fire, maybe repurposing their oil for their explosives. The adaptations line up pretty well. So in conclusion, I believe slugcats are like seals as a baseline, with adaptations for more or less fat and oil or for more or less hair and other such things coming up as they adapt to their environment.
I always assumed they were slimy since a small coat of slime would protect them from small bumps and sharp angles deep inside the pipes. The slime could also be made to be like a cleaning substance to help keep pipes clean.
I saw someone else say this and I totally agree with them. I imagine slugcats have smooth skin, yet they have a thin fur coating that is slightly slippery (like a seal or otter)
I always saw them as sort of shorter haired squirrel like things, since they're so nimble, with the tail being mostly fat rather than fur kinda like some lizards.
I think they are kinda dry but a bit moist, but can produce slime rapidly to slide and traverse pipes and stuff like that. Thats why the feets sound dry
LUTH THIS IS AWESOME. I enjoyed watching EVERY SINGLE SECOND of this video. I just can imagine how much work there is behind this, and I can simply tell how wonderful and perfectly done this is. I like to believe that most slugcats, excluding Saint and Rivulet, are have a slight slime layer above regular, mouse-like skin. Rivulet is slimier and wetter, because they can pop bubble fruit and slide around fast, and Saint is obviously fluffier, so they can survive the harsh cold.

Pipe rats were the result of an experiment that took place shortly after the first couple of iterators were commissioned. They are a combination of the DNA of weasels and slug-like quadrupeds. They would be trained to clean pipes in reward for food, but after the ancients died out, they slowly evolved into today's slugcats.
A friend told me they had the texture of mochi, and that made a lot of sense to me. Soft and squishy but firm enough to land with a plop. Not to mention most mochi isn’t sticky when you touch it cause it’s covered in starch c3 . So their just smooth lil squishy things
After seeing a video of a Ringed Seal getting it's fur ruffled I am now convinced that the average Slugcat has the fur of a Ringed Seal (those things look so smooth unless you mess with the fur direction)
8:50 to me, this sounds like you'd drop a big sack of something semi-solid on the floor, I cant think of what it reminds me of rn but something like jello? the grindy noise you hear isnt what I'd call wet, its dust/small bits of dirt being ground into the floor. like dragging your feet

11:06 THE MARIO MAN VS MARIO IDEA REFERENCE
Thank you!! Yeah I love Orpy's part lol
I've always thought scavs were like ants, not monkeys. Something gives exoskeleton and their complex social structure makes me think of ants.
@@Notlutherr that is true, there are very few rodents that have little fur
The effort you put into the lip syncing, animatedness when speaking, and captions will NOT go unnoticed
I’m glad I love animating lipsync :>
@@Notlutherr I wish I could relate 😭
babe wake up, 27 minute long luther video just dropped
i can't believe microwauce didn't make it in
3:27 wha- WHY DO YOU HAVE THAT.
I think most slug cats are hairless, like a sphinx cat, and that without their hair they’re smooth. Like human skin. Or actually frog skin is a better comparison. Frog skin but warm. But then sometimes they can have fur (like saint) and then they are fuzzy.
I remember an old conversation and multiple mentions before DP came out that saint's "fur" is actually insulating gel, that he is a slimy little guy
but then downpour isnt technically canon... so saint cant really confirm that it is true for all slugs
Interesting!
Wait what do you mean Downpour isn’t canon?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DOWNPOUR ISN’T CANON?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!??!?
WHAT
@@fluffy7358 Downpour is an alternate universe, the main canon timeline is the story of the 3 main slugcats
So the survivor and monk alternate endings are part of the alternate canon timeline the other slugcats are in
@@Bentrix18 But the whole story of Downpour takes place interspersed with the three main slugcat's campaigns! it's integrated in! none of the original slugcats have an ending that matters except hunter, and even then the only thing that matters is that Moon is revived. Why would you separate something that never mattered in the first place? On what basis?
WHAAAAAT THIS IS TOP TIER CONTENT YOU LITERALLY ANIMATED AND COLORED LIKE MORE THAN A HALF OF THE VIDEO?!?!?!?!?!?
THANK YOU!!!!!
GRAAAAAH GOD I LOVE YOUR ARTSTYLE!!!!! 💓💓💓
Aw thanks so much!!
Also slugcats are 100% equivalent to polecats, ill die on this hill any day
I just came across this wonderful channel not even two days ago and I'm given a NEW video? Hell yeah. Love your stuff
Ayyy thank you glad you enjoy my stuff!!
I think most people are treating the fact that saint has different texture as the exception rather than the rule. In my opinion, it is very likely the slugcats from different campaign would have different textures, to serve different purposes. Rivulet would be very slime and amphibian-like by necessity, while something like saint would be furry.
Glad to see this silly deep dive!
Also glad to see garb being the cameraman in this one !!
[I have to interviene, but WHY DID YOU KILL GARB ;-;]
It wasn’t me!
I really want to know what void spawn are interesting to think about! and yeah I completely misunderstood what he was saying there.

Awhhhhgggghhhh (thank you :>)
To be honest fur sounds like a disadvantage in their environment since they'd become too soggy and cold from the rain. it's a wet environment
Although i'd like to think maybe it just depends on the slugcat, all are slimy, but some have fur. and others don't.
i'm kinda annoyed that you didn't go into the texture comparasion to different animals more.
because the comparasion to seals is very much spot-on.
they basically look almost exactly like the slugcats in the official art. especiallly when they're in an wet enviroment.
it is to be considered, that the name slug cat didn't come from the developers, they merely adapted it from what the community called it during early development. and if they were slimy like slugs, they could stick to vertical surfaces indefinitely.
personally I'm imagining a dry, water repellent, but very slick, almost oily feeling surface like teflon or a sand snake, that only leaves invisible, slippery residue in the form of microscopic particles, it you pet a slonk for a while. (like cockpit spray or industrial dry lubricants feels on your hands)
it just makes sense! you've never seen a slonk dripping wet, and a slowly replenishing epidermis made of a low friction, abrasion resistant bio polymer would be perfect for squeezing though tight spaces, and this would fit a purposed organism. ..also i think they'd feel firm, but pretty squishy at the same time, using subcutaneous blubber for insulation, rather than fur.
The Duck Detective in real in frfr
no way ducktective
I'd like to mention one thing if it helps:
One of the art things that were made to announce Downpour's launch had VERY thin fur-like things on the 5 downpour slugcats.
Opinion:
Maybe it's like that one person said, the fur adapts to the times the creatures are living in, which happens a lot of times in real life. But honestly, i think everyone can have their own headcannons, wether they are slimy, smooth, furry, or not any of that, it's all ok!
0:06 Xbox wheel
That’s a good point I hadn’t considered the location! Also I misunderstood what pebbles was saying so the organism had eyes!
@@Notlutherr oh yea i forgot to mention i think slugcats were created to be like a blank slate for experimentation or making messengers
@@somemicrowave145I could see that!
Leeches seem more like natural lifeform than purposed organism
My Headcanons:

Artificer: Slightly fuzzy, Fuzz is rough and hard

@@EggDeliverybutBasic Fixed. My B.
very cool, but HOW did you not mention this part from the inv ending:
(this is after saint claims to have gotten a haircut):
Fur? Since when did members of your species have fur?
You can't recall ever getting a "haircut" in your entire life.
They're seeming more and more foreign to you. Could they really be an eligible mate?
and i know you came to the conclusion they don't have fur, but its still surprising this wasnt brought up.
and also, nice artstyle, looks very cool
Yeah! Also, we have furles cats already in the real world. I just assume a slugcat is like that, but slightly slimy so they can slip and slide when they need.
I haven’t played that Inv campaign but I assumed it was all non cannon that being said still something to consider! And thanks!!!
@@Notlutherr i mean yeah, its teeeechnically non-canon but it would be very strange if in this parallel non-canon universe all slugcats had a different texture for some reason lol
thank you for clearing this up! I've always subscribed to the otter theory but it was good to hear the other sides of the story
I always assumed it was like smooth fur where if you brush it the way it goes it remains unchanged and stays smooth but brushing against its direction makes it feel more bristley
gluh
Wa wa
wawa!
I always assumed they were slimy since a small coat of slime would protect them from small bumps and sharp angles deep inside the pipes. The slime could also be made to be like a cleaning substance to help keep pipes clean.
wa wa
wawa!

Thanks for covering the pipe-cleaner pearl. It's bothered me forever how much it's referenced despite how unlikely it is that it refers to scugs.
I love the detective Luther. Was getting worried that you didn't published videos or anything

i think the scug is not furry because on a couple scugs like artifficer and hunter there are visible scars that would normally be covered by fur
Very good point!
