  • Hey gang, well, this review has been nearly 4 months in the making and it's been a real ton of fun and it's ended up being the longest review I've ever put together... but this game deserved it. This episode, I'm looking at the legendary game HEROQUEST from Milton Bradley and Games Workshop from 1989!
This review is different from my previous reviews in that it's been done from first receiving the game, first seeing the contents, playing it... and also painting it! Yes, Heroquest introduced me to the fun of painting minis and I've loved making this game look as good as I can make it.
I've been bowled over by how innovative and fun the game is, I've played little but Heroquest in the past few months...it's truly a fantastic game.
    Hope you enjoy the video!
    Keep gaming,
    Luke

I remember setting up my game...back in 1990. My friends and I used to play it all the time and had some great laughs. My wife used to groan, "Oh no. It's HeroQuest night." A few years later I went traveling and through a divorce, and multiple moves all around Canada and BC I lost track of the game. A few months ago a friend popped by that I hadn't seen since the beginning of COVID. He was one of the original players back in the day. He pulls out HeroQuest and says, "I think this is yours. Found it in my closet with my kids games." I just about fell over. Thankfully the box had been taped shut and the kids never opened it. Everything was there and in mint condition, sitting in a closet for almost 30 years. Now I'm painting mine as well. Great game.

My mum literally just pulled this from our attic, I was born in 76 so I had this game in 1990 when I was 14. Loved it. In 1990 it cost £15. It even had all my old writing in it, as you could create your own adventures. My brother and I had a real nostalgic trip going over all this one wknd. Brilliant

Back in the 90's, I bought this game from Toys R Us for 20 dollars on sale. Now I wish I had bought an extra one. Back then I used to record loony toons cartoons on VCR tape for future watching. Going back and watching them I found Hero Quest commercials here and there. I always loved this game, I painted my dudes back then, and still have the game.

In 1989 I was 27 with a love of sword and Sorcery fiction, going back to my childhood and a lapsed interest in miniature wargaming. I didn't get to know Heroquest until about 20 years later, when I was given an old copy, that was partially painted and in good condition. This was the first miniatures game that I painted and has led to me painting on a regular basis and playing mostly dungeon crawl type games. I sold my copy of Heroquest and three expansions, just before the new version was announced and so didn't back this. I now have lots of dungeon crawlers and hundreds of minis but I may purchase the new version. Great review and I hope it encourages more people to give painting a go?

I got lucky with the price on it, was a matter of being patient and waiting for a copy to come up, and I was the only bidder, just happens like that sometimes.
And I have been eyeing the dark world minis for heroquest use…certainly would get more play than being used for Dark World 🤣

I love Heroquest, have painted a set not so long ago, and all the childhood memories came back as soon as I started playing it with friends who have 0 interest in playing more complex things such as D&D. There was even an unreleased NES version that was leaked online a few years ago.

Oh Hey Larry, love your videos, been watching them for years, never thought I'd get you commenting on one of mine! Yeah there were versions out for the C64 and amiga I think? Hadn't heard about the NES version! The app that's come out with the reprint of the board game from Hasbro can act as the DM so it's like a weird hybrid board game/video game. It's brilliant that there's the option now for a solo player version of the board game out there

Thanks :) Like I said, it took a good few months to get everything painted and be happy with it. Best advice I can give is take your time. I started with painting the tables first, very few colours to them, can practice doing washes to add texture and getting those right will definitely boost your confidence with it :) start simple and build to the more complex figures and furniture pieces, last pieces I did were the enchanters bench and the gargoyle, I knew they had a lot of detail and doing the other figures gave me plenty of practice in getting techniques right :)

The Advanced heroquest rule book has rules to play the original Heroquest game solo or cooperatively, by way of generating the dungeon, encounters ect, procedurally using an innovative list of tables for outcomes, It's a great way to play classic Heroquest and the tables are very customizable.

@@downfromtheattic Advanced heroquest is awesome, just as good as basic Heroquest, AHQ, uses a procedurally generated dungeon tile system, but unfortunately the game doesn't come with enough dungeon tiles in the box in my opinion, So I would recommend getting two or more box sets if you can to increase the dungeon tile amount. Or just play with the basic Heroquest game board using the solo or cooperative rules found in the AHQ rule book.

If anyone could complain at all, they might say that you should've got a set of small snips meant for electronics for a few quid and clipped ALL the minis and bits off their sprues, used a craft knife to extract the chipboard elements cleanly, etc. Of course, if their copies have clean cuts everywhere today, it's almost certainly because they cleaned them up years later to hide the modeling crimes of their youths. So I think they haven't really got reason to complain.
It's a fun game, it's not rare whatever eBay claims, and being a game it was meant to be played. I'm glad you've got your copy! If it strikes your fancy, YeOldeInn is out there and welcomes new players. 🙂

    • @downfromtheattic
      @downfromtheattic  3 роки тому

Hey Joseph, thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I clipped the minis off the spines using electrical pliers, when I got my first citadel paint kit (think it was the current Warhammer 40000 one, had the nicest spread of colours) it came with pincers and the mould line removing tool, really went to town on cleaning the pieces up before painting.
Copies seem to be plentiful on eBay which really makes me wonder why the price of admission is so high, perhaps its a result of its own success. And I'm on yeoldinn and have mentioned it in the video, if it helps new people find the community, can't be a bad thing :)

I was 12 when this game came out. I still have my copy today. Love this game! I have fixed up the box and started painting my mini figs. I remember the day the commercial came out. Told my dad and we got a copy right way. how do you find the links for the 3d printer figs and also what's a good 3d printer for mini figs.
this game will stay in my Family forever. I just wish I can find more ppl to play with. that's my problem. I can't find ppl.

Hey Jonathan, with me starting out with doing this sort of thing too I picked up a Warhammer 40000 marine starting kit, came with something like 14 paints, a flash mold line remover and a brush. Seemed like it had the best spread of colours that I needed. I've bought better brushes since and have expanded the amount of paints I have, I have around 60 or so now which is still nothing compared to the more serious painters. Paints are a mix of citadel and war games paints, I'm not brand loyal, I just get the colours I need. Oh! And a good wet pallet helps a lot!

Great review! Would love to see Space Crusade next too! I'm surprised you managed to get a new on sprue copy - must have horrendously expensive! Against the Ogre Horde is a great expansion but as you note, it is super tricky to find it complete in box and for a reasonable price. You might look into something like Descent 1st or 2nd Edition or Imperial Assault if you enjoyed Heroquest. They are arguably direct descendants of Heroquest's overlord vs heroes dungeon crawl setup, just with much more modern design.

You know, I've been eyeballing Descent for quite a while now, it does look fun, the board is more modular isn't it? I'm right in thinking that the game has a companion app too?
