  • In this heavily battered video, watch me disassemble a Kenmore Direct Drive to allow you to clean the brush roller and partially disassemble it until I run out of tape on my ancient camera.
    This was originally supposed to be a more complete service video so I had to record new audio and all of that fun stuff, but what is there is still a good explanation of how to get into one of these.

    Thank you for the video. I had to get into power cord connection and you showed how to get to wiring. I was able to remove the cover without removing the handle, because I couldn't.

    I have this vacuum, and it works well. We just bought wool carpeting. I was told you can not use a vacuum with the bristles. Is there a setting that would raise the bristles, so it does not touch the carpet? Thank you!

    Couldn't tell but do you recall whether the 608 bearing is open? one seal? 2 seal? rubber seals or metal seals? I noticed searching the web that there are variants of said 608 bearing. wondering because I plan on taking apart Kenmore and cleaning the direct drive motor and testing 608 bearing for play, filth, etc.

    my direct drive model # 116.35923500 could be accessed from the bottom with a bit of a struggle. Removing the whole bottom may be best.

    I own 4 or 5 of these progressive vacuums. I do a lot of diy projects, and watch a ton of videos. Your's is up there with the best of them. I have a question, the brush roller on one of my vacs, (which is exactly like the one in your video), is running intermittently. If I bang it, it goes again. At first I figured it was probably a handle switch, but now I'm wondering if it could just be dirty? I didn't see a handle switch (that turns on the brush when you lower the handle) in your video, is there one? Also, would dirt or sand lock the brush motor up? I use that vacuum in a very dusty, sandy area in the desert. Fun fact, the guy that owned this house before me owned a vacuum cleaner sales and repair shop. He left hundreds of broken vacuum cleaners behind when he left, (he was a bit of a hoarder ;-). Again, fantastic video, thanks for posting!!

      Did you ever figure out why the brush roller is intermittently? Thanks

    I have an old Kenmore upright direct drive Intuition model 116.31810010. It recently had a plug in the hose right where it connects to the vacuum head assembly. I successfully cleaned it out with some needle nose pliers as demonstrated on another UA-cam video. Now I have a problem with the brush itself. The brush will easily turn by hand, and the vacuum works well on the bare wood floor setting, but the brush will not turn when the switch is on for carpet. I am at a loss about the reason since all videos with my problem are for belted vacuums. Is there a separate motor for the brush that could be shot? Do you have any suggestions for me?

      The Intuition is pretty much the same thing as this as far as the brush is concerned. The first thing to try would be to press the red reset button. If the clog blocked the brush, that could have tripped. The motor for these is actually inside of the brush roller, which is why the roller is wider than an average belted machine. Another thing could be the switch inside of the head, which is briefly shown where my hands are at 5:16. This makes it so that the roller will not run unless the handle is reclined. If this switch fails, it could run all the time or not at all. Finally, if everything traces to the motor (meaning there are no bad connections or anything like that, a multimeter helps) then the brush can be found on eBay and places like that as a whole assembly.

    I’ve been looking for this video for years ever since my vacuum started spewing dust everywhere. Since then, I noticed my brush roller had disintegrated and needs to be replaced, but I had no idea how to replace it. Not only that, I can’t seem to find that particular part. Any suggestions on where to find a brush roller for the bagged model bought in 2008?
    I suspect that people will find this video because Consumer Reports considered it a “Best Buy” back in the day. There must have been tons of them sold.

      eBay is probably your cheapest option to find a roller. Any of the rollers that fit in this style of base have the same roller (with 2 or 4 rows of bristles). There are older and newer variants, but especially the newer ones look quite different from these. It's wild how many of these are still in the wild today.

      @@ReviewingModsOfGames Thanks for the tip. It was discouraging going to Sears parts and finding absolutely nothing. I guess that would be typical for something so old.

    I just found your very helpful video. I would like to test the brush motor. I notice that it is direct current, can you tell me the DC voltage that is correct for the motor?

    • @ReviewingModsOfGames
      @ReviewingModsOfGames  Рік тому

      As far as testing it to see if it spins, they will run on a very low voltage. In the machine, I may not be remembering correctly, but I think it rectifies the 120 VAC line directly, so that would be about 170 VDC.

      The most simple check is to see if the overload breaker is tripped. You can reset it by pressing on the little red button on the head. If it is tripped, it can be caused by something stuck in the roller, or hair wrapped around the edges. If everything is clear and the brush doesn't spin smoothly/pretty easily, it is probably hair or something on the edges of the brush. My previous comment addressed possible faults if the brush does spin smoothly.
