It may help to remember that often trees are grafted to a hardier root stock that is not the tree you purchased. So if you have suckers coming up from the roots, they may actually be a different tree...usually less desirable than the one you're trying to grow. So it pays to keep them under control.
Those are some real suckers for ya, yeah LOL. I have a hard time not wanting to cut them off in others yards when I see them. I just don't get Why they don't! Beautiful tree!! ❤️
Great information! We have a Linden tree and also 1 of our Birch trees that produce suckers right at the base of the trunk each year. Why do some trees do this while others don't?
I have the same tree but mine doesn’t sprout suckers like that or water sprouts. Suckers/water sprouts are a sign of stress or trauma to the tree. My prairifire is a one stem though.

Thank you for this! We bought a house that has a seriously neglected crabapple and I feel much more confident about caring for it this weekend!
Just be sure your cutting tools are disinfected. 70% isopropyl alcohol is best but bleach wipes work too.

I have the same urge! We should walk around with our pruners at all times, then again maybe not 😂

That’s just their tendency, I guess, and another thing we can count on from year to year. Like the weeds! 😂
@@heatherhereshegrows maybe they want to grow wild! 🤪
Because most crabapple trees are grafted root stock and it wants to survive its its way of surviving
Roses do the same thing on grafted root stock I’m gonna try propagating some on its own root stock i know roses do well on their own root stock
@@BLEACH500I always check if a rose is grown on its own roots or grafted for this reason. I still have some of each but it’s good to know.

Yes, that's true. But some crabs are more prone to suckering and water sprouts when not under stress. Prairiefires, unfortunately, are prone to both.
How old is your tree? I purchased a bare root one last year. Its now in a pot. Waiting for fall
It's about 10 years old and looked more like a tiny shrub when I planted it.
CAnt you just keep cutting the suckers down? Mine are too thick now, but if I keep cutting down maybe not too much resources will go to the sucker.
