Even in Canada, we've been blessed with seeing The Young Ones. After this show ended its groundbreaking run, Rik and Ade went on to star in the equally insane show, Bottom. There's footage on UA-cam of them performing Bottom to a live audience, watching them go completely off script and even funnier. Rik Mayall is definitely missed. Love your shirt! Vancouver has been home for over 50 years ♥
The band was "Madness" most known for their 80s hit "Our House (in the middle of our street)". This was filmed before they got famous. They are in another episode later
Madness were hugely famous for years (in Britain) before this, since 1979. Our House was their 12th UK Top 10 single, and they were easily one of the biggest bands in the country. Their compliation album "Complete Madness" was the No.1 album earlier in the year.
@@rodentnolastname6612 Not a problem. I'm sure there must be bands known for one song here, who are/were big over there too. How many of them appeared in the middle of top comedy shows is a different matter.
I've been a massive fan of The Young Ones for ever, especially Rick Mayal RIP. But watching you watch them is hysterical, thank you so much doing this series.
Being 50 I saw these while at school, our drama teacher hated it cos all we ever wanted to do was reenact that weeks episode of this or the A Team! We'd spend half the lesson arguing over who got to play Vivian or Mr. T cos they were the cool tough guys! The 80s were a great time to grow up & with stuff like this I'm not sure most of us did? 😜
The Young Ones came out of a comedy group called The Comic Strip that also featured French & Saunders in. They did a series of TV films on channel four under “The Comic Strip Presents”, highly recommend all of them but the first one “Five Go Mad In Dorset” is a good place to start
This is one of the easiest episodes to spot secret flatmate #5. In the last episode, she was sitting in a dark corner of the room while the guys watched the white spot on the television. Here, she's in plain sight in the first shot, sitting by the stairs as the bearded dude tiptoes past her. She's still sitting there on the other side of the stairs when they start watching "Bastard Squad" on TV.
The Young Ones, which was originally the title of a Cliff Richard song of course, actually recorded a music video *with* Cliff Richard at the time, of his song LIVING DOLL. Definitely worth a watch, even if you don't put it on the channel. The B-side (All The Little Flowers Are Happy) was even better, I could recite that thing word for word back then, it's hilarious. (they're both here on YT) Quote from the B-side: "Like sometimes I wake up in the morning and think like, what's that inside my trousers and then like half an hour later I remember it's me, Neil."
@@jen6879 Mike: Neil, where's your guitar? Neil: Oh wow pop quiz hang on hang on I know this, it's on the tip of my tongue.. Vyvian: Oh! What a stupid place to keep your guitar! 🤣🤣🤣
Rick and Ade make this a very special show. As a kid, I would fall into a ball of hysterics. I still laugh like a kid watching it now. I do love Nigel and Christopher though...but how could they possibly compete?
I think the difference is that Rick and Ade were full-out comedians, while Nigel and Christopher were actors. Rick and Ade also had a lot of experience as a double act, performing as the Dangerous Brothers, and continuing after Young Ones in stuff like Catflap and Bottom. One of my favorite moments in the Black Adder series was from World War I when Ade's Red Baron confronts Rick's Flasheart.
Best episode I can remember (very long time ago) was called 'Bambi' which is a parody of University Challenge. Memorable because - 1. It features Motorhead performing 'Ace of Spades' and 2. features a very young Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and (I think) Hugh Laurie. Can't remember which number episode it was though. 😁
It's season/series 2 episode 1. 1: Demolition, Oil, Boring, Bomb, Interesting, Flood. 2: Bambi, Cash, Nasty, Time, Sick, Summer Holiday. "Bambi" also has Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones (the title role!)...alas?
Alexei Sayle (the fat one) had a top 20 hit in the 80's with a song called Ullo John Gotta new motor. The hippy Neil had a no.2 hit with a song called Hole in my shoe. Both appeared on top of the pops.
A series that is totaly insane, makes no bloody sense and is fantastic for those reasons. Dawn Marie loving the "Vancouver Canada" shirt! I lived there for 5 years 30 years ago when it was affordable and it was a great city back then.
"The Young Ones" got me through a very dark period in my life as a teen when I was paralyzed, thankfully temporarily. But that show was hilarious!! I was always laughing at them! Like you Dawn, I love a good fart joke!! Have a great one!
Not sure when, but I think it was a 1986 or 87 they started playing The Young Ones on MTV here in America..late night of course.. it was an instant favorite for me and my friends.
So great seeing you reaction to the show my friends and I used to watch in college. Favorite episodes are Party and Bambi( lots of familiar faces in that one), Nasty is really good too. Neil was my favorite character because I had a lot of hippie friends.
It is so great to see someone reacting to this series. I have loved it since I was a child. Maybe that's why my brain is warped. My favorite episodes are Interesting, Bambi and cash.
Bambi is probably the best episode (with Motorhead!), but Nasty is also very good (with the Damned!). The latter is especially interesting for fans of horror films as the episode is based on the whole 'video nasty' period of film history in the early 80s, when many very low budget horror films - most of which in retrospect are dire - were produced, and which occurred at the outset of the widespread ownership of video recorders. Video tape rental shops popped up everywhere but at first the tapes were uncertified, resulting in groups of kids renting and merrily sitting through such 'gems' as I Spit on Your Grave, Cannibal Holocaust, etc. A very interesting point in time, which got the press very excitable in its condemnation.
Makes my day everytime you laugh, so please keep laughing. My 3 favorites 1. Bambi 2. Cash 3. Interesting, this one has Vyvyans real life wife, Jennifer Sanders, she wears a red hat I think. Neil, Rik, and Vyvyan were a Spinal Tap type band called Bad News. Most interesting is Rik is the only Young One who wrote the show. Him and 2 friends he and Adrian (Vyvyan) met in college.
My favourite episode is Bambi. At some point you might want to check out the video The Young Ones did i think for Comic Relief with Cliff Richard on the song, Livin Doll.
And Bambi probably has the greatest collection of cameos. Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Ben Elton, Tony Robinson, Emma Thomson, Mel Smith, and Griff Rhys-Jones!!!
"Why is (Vyv's mum) dressed like Where's Wally?" You know what Dawn, somehow in all the times I've watched this show I've never actually noticed that before..!
Fave episodes are the ones where they're totally skint and Neil has to join the police. Also, the one where they're having a party in this first series. Since you like the random madness, I think this episode has the most concentrated scenes of random madness. (Edited to remove a spoiler I just noticed I'd accidentally typed in. Sorry).
Well I gave the season and episode number but left out anything about the plot but good on ya for being good about keeping it pretty vague and deleting any major spoilers 👍.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the premise of this show is four university students living together. Each is an exaggerated stereotype of a student type in England at the time. Even the name"Young Ones" was a dig at the banal Cliff Richard, who these guys were the polar opposite of. You should check out the charity song they recorded with him, it's worth a look. Rik was the romantic, (I'm guessing art student) who thinks he is deep and a revolutionary, Vyvyan a violent punk, Neil, a paranoid Hippie type- (It should be noted Hippies were absolutely reviled in the UK, because they would gather in large groups and make a nuisance of themselves, often invading private property which took weeks or months to have them legally removed.) Mike, the "cool person" who for some reason people defer to, but no-one really knows why... College students would rent a shitty property and share the rent to save money...but they ALWAYS had money for the pub! The Carrot was dancing with a chip, or french fry as the American's would say, and it was a potato in Alexis Sayle's stomach with the goldfish, as indicated by it's Irish accent. All the weird things were actually happening, not in Neil's head, kind of an ironic counter to them complaining how boring it was. I thought all were good episodes, often some brilliant scenes in each one but "Sick" probably springs to mind, but so does the final episode.
1st episode of the second series is best for me, although you need to know who Bamber Gascoigne is (an old presenter of University Challenge) to get a couple of the jokes - although it's hardly crucial.
Don’t have a favorite episode, they all are *absolute brilliant* in Rick’s words 😂 Finish this series, then watch *Bottom* promise you won’t be disappointed Rick and Vivian made that one as well, Rick name are still Rick but Vivian are *Eddie Hitler* there absolutely brilliant 😂

The little demon is David Rappaport who played Randall in Time Bandits. And the band playing? It's Madness playing House of Fun
