  • If you've never seen a de Haviland Fox Moth then you'll probably find this video interesting.
    Two DH Moths dropped in this week on their way to a fly-in down south. I managed to get some video of them landing, parked up and taking off.
    Very nice old aircraft that have been exceptionally well restored and are a credit to their owners and pilots.
    And how about that overhead footage eh? :-)

    The Fox moth is probably one if the most elegant biplanes ever designed. Therte is one here in Perth painted in gloss black (which I think really brings out the beauty of the plane) that just takes you back to the elegance and splendour of the roaring 20's everything you look at it
    (of course the owners dress in flapper type outfits whenever they bring it to an airshow which helps)

    • @RobB_VK6ES

      Surely flapping is not required. That's what the motor is for :)
      Agree the pilot of the Fox Moth is a charm school dropout.

      Rob B www.aviationwa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/RAC_5662.jpg that's the pic of it. funny haha, flapper OUTFITS, like roaring 20s style! She's a beautiful thing! pity no one really manufactures an RC version.

    And a thank you to these vintage aviators who dropped in with these lovely de Havilland machines so Bruce could record them for us toenjoy too,I take my hat off to you for restoring these beauties,this is real aviating and the setting looked ideal.
    There are some very rude comments below and there is no need for them,these people have spent hours restoring these beauties to flying condition so show some respect please.

    Beautiful aircraft , I only just discovered them yesterday , unfortunatley nowadays there isnt as much attention towards these wonderfull aircraft as there could be. The passenger space is a wonderfull set up making it a very utilitarian & practicle vehicle. Great video & TY for posting.

      You know, that may be the case, but I always wonder if Bruce asks for permission before pointing a camera at someones face. Don´t get me wrong, I´m long time subscriber of this chanel and like the content, even donated in the past, but some people are just shy around cameras and Bruce should respect that. Thumps ups for the video anyway

      They are in a public place so there is no expectation of privacy. Who do they think they are Alec Baldwin? Also, they are flying a very rare vintage aircraft to not expect attention would be silly of them. You don't see that kind of plane everyday/month/year/decade/century. No if they want to avoid cameras they should fly commercial or a Cessna or something. Flying commercial will have the government eyeballing them though, post 9/11. The NSA have their number too! =D

    • @juliocoliveira
      @juliocoliveira 10 років тому +2

      Hesperus Yes, but it´s one think to record/take photos of the planes, another to record and make "funny" comments of the guy who was taking pictures, And based on the amount of video os planes, it seems to me they were actually kind enough to let Bruce around the planes as much as he wanted.

    • @juliocoliveira
      @juliocoliveira 10 років тому

      Tim Norrie Yes, I know this all to well. It´s just that I enjoy this channel very much and during the past 2 years it looks to me that Bruce has lost the simpathy of everyone in the airfield, and that is sad because it´s was a lot of fun when they all flew together.

    • @xjet

      Quite the contrary.
      Just recently we had a good number of the former SWMAC fliers at the field and spend a lovely day sitting around chatting about "the good old days". There were almost a dozen of us all enjoying each other's company and lamenting the fact that the local club is now just a tiny handful of vitrolic individuals who have effectively driven everyone else away.
      There are about a dozen or so people around (some former SWMAC members, some new would-be fliers) around here who'd love to be flying RC models at the field but their attempt to start a club was vetoed by the two or three SWIM members who still fly (and even then, only for a couple of hours on a weekend).
      Club memberships are due for renewal next month and I think SWIM will find itself with even fewer members than it has this year (which was down to 17 from the SWMAC's 38 or so from a couple of years before).
      The vast majority of fliers in this area would rather return to the "good old days". Indeed, there was a fair bit of "good old days" spirit on the weekend, as you'll see in a video I'll be posting today.

    My Dad used to fly Fox Moths up near Yellowknife back in the late 40s. Wheels and skis, I don't remember any float stories, but their likely were some. I do remember one pilot that worked at the same place - his name was Max Ward. But back then they were all just regular guys struggling to survive as bush pilots. Hunters, mining geologists, sight seeers, lodge operators were their customers. Great video, fabulous aircraft - looks quite a bit nicer than the ones Dad flew :)

    • @planegaper
      @planegaper 4 роки тому

      wonder if there is a book on Max Ward, even flew Ward Air once in the 90's when Transat screwed up a flight.. lemme tell ya, far better than Transat , think it was a An A 300, or a Dc10, from Gatwick to Toronto, possible Mirabel stop on the way.. either way, service, leg room, comfort killed Transat , though to be fair it wasn't a full flight..
      The L1011 however, Mtow, sardines, Transat air hosts were having a soap opera, though the thing would never get off the runway, used up almost all of 33R ..
      We found out the pilot landed hard enough to damage the gear in London, plane was out of service for our return flight..

    Nice Moth's, I was almost expecting Jean Batten to get out of the DH. According to my mother, one of her relations went for a flight in a Tiger Moth during the barnstorming days when they toured the country giving people rides. He got a bit queasy and leaned over the side thinking he was going to be sick and his false teeth fell out. He never did find them after much searching.

    in 1951 I flew from the South island mainland to Center island as an infant on my mothers lap in a Tiger Moth. Well I'm amazed by the comments below. Arrogant, Grumpy, Miserable, Rich, Rude Pricks, etc. Do any of you actually KNOW the people concerned? Were any of you present on the day? No you weren't and that is somewhat obvious. Stan was a little preoccupied by a problem he was experiencing when Bruce asked him the questions on camera. If the same questions had been asked 15 minutes later you would have seen a very different response. As far as the rest of us are concerned we had huge grins and were very grateful for the assistance offered by Bruce and Bob transporting us into town for lunch and fuel. We answered all of the questions asked with enthusiasm and offered any assistance we could. I look forward to next time we pop into Tokoroa and look forward to seeing Bruce and Bob again...perhaps if time permits we will give Bruce the opportunity to take his camera in the front cockpit of the Tiger! And by the way...Damn nice video Bruce!

      ***** Bruce, you shot it and edited it. @ 7:22 the main recipient of the abuse is seen happily explaining the history of the Fox. I guess with the size of your audience, a few idiot comments are likely to pop up, but unless it was your intention that the unwitting visitors to "Your" airfield would attract the nonsense from the likes of "photobart" and others, you might wish to state your case a little stronger, instead of apologetic appeasement to the trolls.

    Nice plane but why we're they so rude. Usually pilots in these kind of planes always give a friendly wave when visiting a field. The whole bunch of them were not friendly. They all had a stick stuck up you know where. They were jerks.

    Holly Shit! What an attitude with the guy of the Fox Moth ZK-APT! I fly a 72 year old Cessna 120 aircraft and RC airplanes. A lot of people come and ask questions about my plane and I never give them an attitude as this guy did! It looked like he had a broom stick stuck up his ass!! Anybody is welcome to come to Utah, US to look at my airplane and I will be thrilled to answer any questions!

    By the way Bruce - i subscribe to both of your channels with bell as vell as other channels, but i do not get notified when you have issued a new video - there is a couple of other channels also - don't get notified. Some channels is at my e-mail right away.... UA-cam consider other channels better for commercials?

    If it was a car show and someone was kinda rude I would suggest that the rude guy screw off because he brought his car to the show and People ask questions because what you are showing off is cool to them . Here they stopped in for fuel?or whatever and Bruce was that interested guy and maybe a little quick with the interview for the mentioned grumpy Guy . Still not called for I guess .

    Grumpy old sods. I would like to suggest anyone interested in the Fox Moth should watch Dave Hadfield flying one built for Edward VIII. far superior to this....I felt sorry for the guy trying to ask questions about these vintage aeroplanes..

    Beautiful planes. Too bad the pilots are a bunch of anti social, grumpy old farts. If you have a plane like that and someone wants info on it, etc. share the info and be courteous. By doing so you are promoting the sport and educating others.

    Aua82a, first off I do not like your troll comment. The fact you use offensive language in this forum shows how immature you are. I said I would not comment but it seems you want to drag this on. Learn to be respectful to others both in print and in person and learn to be kind to others.

    • @aue82a
      @aue82a 10 років тому

      learn to be kind to others? I believe you said this "You should have poured the oil on their seats while they were gone." If you want to throw rocks, don't be surprised if one comes back in your direction.

      dphotos the comments from yourself are still visible after a period exceeding one year. I would still ask the question as to how a person such as yourself requires respect whilst suggesting "You should have poured the oil on their seats while they were gone." I am always ready to accept an apology.

    Interesting machines. Shame the joy and mystique of aviation has failed to bring a smile to this old farts faces. Maybe he is still gripped from the final bill for the build and CofA. Most pilots in NZ are very friendly and only too welcome to engage with any fellow aviation types. Come to think of it perhaps these guys were from CAA? That's the only place I've seen this kind of pompous austism before!

      I sleep well at night. I made a comparison to the typical behavior of a rich conservative man in the US who could give a rats you know what about the middle class. I am guessing these men are very rich. Looks like they had team members and a mechanic following their plane flight. These planes are very expensive to own. Maybe I was harsh but I do not like that kind of behavior.

      photobart1 2 aircraft, 6 seats. 4 pilots who shared flying duties. Both aircraft restored by owners. (no cheque book aviators here) and no mechanic following.
      To what behaviour do you refer?

    • @aue82a
      @aue82a 10 років тому

      Dear photobart. I note an absence of response to my response to your comment. Snobs? no. Rich? far from it. I will say, however, that my pecuniary disadvantaged position due operating an old aircraft, has never prompted me to make blanket, uninformed derogatory comments such as yours.
