Best moment we ever had in this game:
My wife (the Sheriff) "So what is actually keeping me from opening this bag?"
Friend-with-no-hesitation: "Fear"
Best and greatest bluff ever
In my opinion, the expansion and the app fixes all the flaws he mentioned. Scoring is easier and the modules in the expansion add a very nice later of depth and replayability
Does the app still have that satisfying pop on the bag?
Best fun I had with this game was when I actually started to treat it as 'Customs: The Game'
Peoples reactions when
1. You offer anyone who honestly declares contraband a fair price (~3 gold each) when they're still picking up cards.
2. Someone is stupid enough to actually believe you.
3. When you actually honour your word.
4. When you make the same offer next round.
5. (optional, I didn't do this) When you open everyone's bag after they've put 5 contraband in it.
All are hilarious for different reasons.
you probably dont give a shit but does anybody know a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Gunner Logan Instablaster =)
@Josiah Jon thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Josiah Jon It worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Gunner Logan Happy to help =)
Aaand 4 games in, the button rips....
same here :c
Yup, production quality on the bags is shit. I had the first button rip in my very first game. It's a real shame too, the game just isn't the same without that satisfying "snap!" when the sheriff opens a bag.
Yep. I got mine second-hand in a trade, but it looked like it had been barely been played. I've gotten maybe a half-dozen plays in and nearly all of my buttons are ripped. That said, these look like different snaps than in my set. They may be more durable. It is a shame. Matt's right. The game hinges on that snap. So my copy is essentially unplayable now.
that's why my friend who owns the game doesn't let us close them lol
I contacted the publisher after a bag ripped, they sent me 2 full sets of replacement bags.
This is my favourite game ever! Best with 4 or 5 people.
The Expansion pushes lying and trying to get through contraband.
In the original game you can often win by only using the legal goods every time.
And i highly recommend some LIGHT roleplaying.
I think that all bluffing games depends of the social interaction between players. In my group, Sheriff of Nottingham runs amazinhgly well because people love making roleplays. But, in some groups, people just play it without interaction and it looses too much fun. That same problem happen with Modern Art too. Even with this social interaction dependency, I still love this game. It is really fun, and if you recognize its limitations and put on the table with the right group, probably will be a very pleasure moment.
About the point system, I don't think it is complex.
I fricking hate playing with people like that, trying sheriff with thoze ruined the experience for me
For real though get your mums recipe, it's so easy to follow a good cake recipe. And then you have cake.
We played this a number of times in a pub. The poppers on the pouches were broken, and you are absoltely right it did detract from the game. Maybe it was just the people who we played against, but I found that I could win comfortalby by simply being honest and stockpiling lots of legal goods, which I think was a bit of a loophole.
The expansion helps alot by adding in the merry men card. These are essentially contraband with special rules, which incentivises people to take more risks
it only took my game group 3 games before the first bag broke. Now about 7 plays through almost every single bag is broken. I dont know if anyone else has this problem but its just not the same without that *snap* when you open the bag
Rodger McCallister I had one bag break during the first game.
Same. And the cut is all off, just bad quality on one of the most important parts of the game!
In my experience most games of Sheriff of Nottingham are won by players who always tell the truth.
One thing that I noticed that helps deter this is if at least two players 100% commit to "smuggling" all 5 cards while the other player acts as the Sheriff.
If negotiations start like this from the very beginning of the game, it often forces other truthful players to begin to lie because the gap will often become to wide to catch-up. . . . But, I agree with others that the fun is often in the gameplay and not necessarily whether one wins or not.
Sheriff of Nottingham's one of those games where I really enjoy the moment to moment gameplay then start feeling weird when we're scoring? because I realize I had no strategy and no sense of how well I or anyone else was doing, so I never really knew when I should've been pushing it with a risky play. the few games I've played the winner didn't bluff once.
and that's fine, really, cause it's still just fun to play and who cares about winning, but as an exercise in design I feel like it could be improved.
Finally! A review of a game I've actually played.
when you take the cookies from the hotel Tea and Coffee room facilities
*CONTRABAND!*
What is your opinion of this game 6 years later? I've been eyeing it up, but just can't decide if it's fun or boring...also, it doesn't seem like the companion app is available anymore? I found a mint copy of the original game because I saw reviews of the 2nd edition not being nearly as nice...just can't make up my mind...I would def get the expansion...
You can get more card variety if you pick up the expansion to the game or any of the promo cards. That can add some nice variety to the game.
I may have missed anyone mentioning this but there is a nice app that we use when we play. It acts as a timer and a way to calculate scores.
My poppers died on the first game on my red bag
In the dim and distant past (1950 according to boardgamegeek), there was a card game published called "Contraband". One player is the Customs Officer.
During the game, the player to your right has a hand of 4 cards, and declares any sutiable items therein to the customs officer, who, after accepting payment for them, can choose to inspect the cards. If they do, they either pay compensation for a clean hand being searched, or collect fines for all undeclared items, and you'll draw a fresh hand of 4 cards to attempt to get through customs. If the hand reaches you unmolested, you have a choice - either you turn in your untrustworthy colleague - in which case you're liable for the compensation if they were honest, but get a flat bonus if they get caught out (fines go to the customs officer as usual). If you accept the cards instead, you look through them, choose one to discard, and draw a replacement. Either way, you then have a hand of 4 cards which you have to pass on, declaring any taxable items and paying the relevant duties before potentially being challenged.
Once the deck runs out, you change customs officer and shuffle the deck. At the end of the game, whoever has most money wins.
It also came in a MUCH smaller box 😂
My family is originally from Nottingham.
As someone said I find that it is way to easy to win without bluffing. I also found that counting the points was really long first 2 times I played but it is really fast when you use the free app.
I think in concept this would be fun but when I played with my friends people just refused to negotiate. It was infuriating and by then the optimal solution was to simply not lie period. Ruined the fun entirely.
dashelgr123 exactly the same first game I played too
Here I am 8 years later to wonder what are the Matt's variants to improve this already good game! :D
I Googled chicken apple bread and found Tangy Apple Chicken Loaf Recipe. I can not even.
Wait is that Gav from Prepare to Try @1:20?
Yeah
Nice, love both your channels!
On an unrelated note... Please review Dinosaur Island!
Taken elements from the card game "Cheat". Fantastic.
Hi SU and SD! We love your reviews and humour!
If you are ever interested in seeing some of us boardgamers here in Argentina let us know!
We upload videos on our channel, in spanish, if you ever want to check them out!
SON is a poorly upgraded version of Milton Bradley's smuggle (1981) which just overcomplicates a really fun game.
I highly agree with everything he said. My biggest mark against the game (I played it at a bachelor party) is that it depends on the social situation. There is sometimes that one guy that won't take the time to negotiate with players. He'll open up the bag for each player, each time. It's infuriating. I like it, it creates good situations, but it has to be with people that are extroverted. And many board-game geeks are not.
Link to the cake recipe, please??
I enjoy being a tyrant sheriff whenever we've played this however....people catch on and you have to be wheeler and dealer or you'll never win....fun game dependent on group.
Have to say. Matt is an excellent reviewer!!
Probably best SH&SD review so far
does any1 have the name of the song in the beginning?
My best guess is this one ua-cam.com/video/FkaxczyyavE/v-deo.html
but I am not quite sure
Better bags and then finally metal coins and this game is perfect
"Carrying the cheese" is now a euphemism.
Bigger than cheeses.
nice review.. would be good to see a review on the expansion at some point.
Gotta ask. What was the opener and how did it relate to SUSD?
A video series we did (mainly Matt) about quick and easy games you could play with non-gamer friends to get them into the hobby. You can find them all here: www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos-page/
Thanks! :)
Hey hey hey. Who said Maths isn't fun.
Any chance of the cake recipe?
Can't find the game anywhere :/
Great review. Good insight.
u know what they say... big hands... big cheese
GAV, is that you!?! #gavedit
Ayy! RKG!
The scoring app is a life saver.
Nice wee secret episode of regular features.
Slug detected at 1:19! More like 'Prepare to Lie' with this game eh Gav?
I sold my copy. It`s quite possible to win without lying/bluffing, which is a bit pointless considering the game is supposed to be all about lying/bluffing.
You hit the nail on the proverbial head there: Everyone needs to buy into the sneaky side of the game. It only takes one player not to enter into the spirit of it and the fun is seriously diluted. I prefer Cockroach Poker, where there`s no escaping the sneakiness.
I think this is largely based on your group just being too trusting or not bluffing/lying effectively. We have a friend who has played the last 10 games of Sheriff without lying a single time, and he notably also has not won a single one of those games.
If your group is fairly trusting and everyone is playing fairly honestly, try to secretly amass contraband into your hand either by top decking or drawing through limited contraband in the discard piles, and then smuggle in 3 to 4 pieces of contraband on a single turn, and then don't lie/bluff for the rest of the game. If you succeed, not only does that get you a ton more points, but it'll also make other sheriffs more likely to open your bag on future turns, forcing them to pay you
It's also important to note that lying/bluffing is two-fold. While it's valuable to get smuggled goods into your shop without paying a bribe, it's just as valuable to entice the sheriff into opening your bag when you have legal goods in it. Offering an insultingly low bribe amount can sometimes be a good way to get the sheriff to open your bag, if done sparingly.
At the end of the day, it's a game about playing other players and their expectations. If someone in your group is very trusting, use their turn as sheriff to smuggle goods in and gain a definitive edge. If someone is likely to open bags, only smuggle legal goods will be a good way to get some money out of them. The important thing, though, is to change it up a bit and not be too predictable in your patterns, while trying to identify the patterns of your opponents. Plus, if you play with the same group often, take advantage of the meta that forms, and the assumptions that are made.
TL;DR: You can bluff effectively even while being honest.
I usually lie and smuggle. But this one game I was bringing in legal goods the entire time. I had fun acting suspicious as possible tho. I ended up getting my bag opened 80% of the time. It was really fun seeing how pissed they are lol.
I miss the recipe... :(
first
Also great review of a great game
to enjoy it really, we didn't use those poppers, they were too had to pop on and out
"you've just been jewed" REALLY??
Duped. Really.
This video could have been 5 minutes shorter and on point....
Matt, are you not a bit embarrassed to mark a game down because you need to add up your points at the end with "maths"? On the other hand, I guess it says a lot about the game if you had to sink that low for a gripe. But still, are we not past this yet?
i like you. BUT your direction & production needs work. youll get there, tho.
This video is from over three years ago. They got there in the meantime.
