Back in 2012, a family found the holy grail of football cards while cleaning out an old farmhouse. The card is the 1894 Mayo Cut Plug Anonymous (John Dunlop) card. Here are the details!

Thanks Mike, I own the mayo cut plug Anonymous card. Mine is the recolored with a crease. Less than 10 exist, my first video was about that card, the first football set produced.
Amazing! And somehow I’m not surprised.
What a soothing voice.
"Be careful when you say 'cut plug'." 🤣🤣🤣
That comment had me laughing. Had to pause it for a minute or two to compose myself.
Another great upload, and a quality find.
Best of luck with your show on to-day, Mike. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, John 😆
Great story, enjoy you digging in for that extra morsel of information. Cool set of cards.
Thanks Doug!
I opened a box of the 2008 Topps Mayo football set. I got a Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers) concert used guitar strap relic. I loved that card and that whole set!
Cool!
Another awesome video
Thank you!
The Dunlop/Anonymous card fascinates me. While Wagner-esque from the rarity standpoint, I don't believe it's a "grail" card, because it's not even close to as popular or well known. I'd be willing to best that less than 10% of people that call themselves football card collectors could tell you anything about it. The Bronko Nagusrski is probably the one I'd call the football "grail."
Absolutely love that you covered this find. There's already so much out there about vintage and prewar baseball. It's awesome to hear something different. Well done!
Thank you! You’re the second person to mention the Nagurski card and I’d heard of it so I should’ve mentioned it but forgot.
Hi Mike, another interesting AFF. I am planning on going to the show tomorrow, not sure if I will be there at 3pm when your talking with Chris. Hopefully catch your interview on the computer when I get home.
Sounds great!
I like vintage cards like these even if I have no idea who the subjects are. Having something that old is exhilarating!
Agreed!
I have an old Mayo Cut Plug tobacco tin!
Very cool!
I'm going to try to tune into that show with you and Chris. I hadn't ever heard of the John Dunlop card so this is awesome. If there were only 10 of these cards known as of 2012, what are the changes that Jefferson Burdick and friends actually knew about this card? In his day, where were less than 7 examples f the Wagner known. 5 I believe in 1940 and 15 in 1975. According to Burdick and Lionel Carter, Jefferson knew he hadn't seen every card out there and he han never seen a complete set of 1933 George C. Miller in his lifetime. Did a quick check and Dunlop was a Halfback for Harvard in 1894 until he graduated in 1897. In October of that year he became coach of BC. This really interesting stuff and I'm wondering if the date is correct on the set? Dunlop is all over the press in 1894 and throughout his time at Harvard, so he wasn't exactly an unknown player. In 1898 The Mayo Tobacco Co. was sold to the Continental Tobacco Co which as the export arm of the American Tobacco Co (same company that had the American Litho Co. issue the T206) and P.H. Mayo retired in 1898. At this time the Mayo branch had a contract with the US Navy and issued their Navy Cut Plug, which if my memory is correct, was a pressed block of tobacco which was run through a cutter into flakes. George Adee was responsible for reviving the game of Tennis prior to WWI and revamping the courts. I'm a huge fan of the sport and a longtime collector of vintage Tennis. It looks like he and David M. Goodrich (of Goodrich tires) served in two wars together, first as a part of Roosevelts Rough Riders, and then in France in WWI. Both received commissions as Major in Plattsburg, New York along with Charles Whittlesey, Eddie Grant and Moose McCormick, both former Baseball players looking for the Lost Battalion.
Amazing history! Yeah I played tennis for years in my youth so I’m a fan and have some tennis cards and autographs. Nothing extensive. Hope to see you in the chat tomorrow!
Michigan and northern Ohio was the place to be back in the day. Lots of backer chewin and smokin hillbillies came to work in the factories is my guess as to why there are lots of tobacco cards up there.
Cool to learn there’s a football version of Honda Wagner. Good luck on your show!
Thanks!
Hi Mike,
Good luck on your sho😮on Saturday I believe!
Thanks for the football 🏈 feature today. I appreciate it.
Respect,
Peter
Thanks Peter!
Like you not into football cards, but that's pretty dam cool. Any vintage story is a good story. Lol I'm about to give up on whatnot. Everything I bid on others think they are worth way more then I do. There was a Ryan fleer sticker the other day that went for 15, I have one saved in my watch list for 6. Still have my 15 credit from sign up.
Yeah some things go for too much but there are a lot that go for a little.
Yeah and I always go why the neck didn't I did on that lol.
Hello. Cool video. So recolor I guess is alright with these cards? No company marked them as altered? If so, that is interesting to me. Thanks.
Definitely marked as authentic recolored
I always thought Bronco Nagerski’s cards were the Holy Grail of Football!
Google it! This card is the top result.
Great thumbnail- informative video!Personally, I know it’s football but I think these cards are undervalued thus a good investment. You said some cards were recolored- what does that mean? Thanks
Thanks Robert! Recolored means someone added color to touch up the worn edges.
@@JunkWaxHero ok, didn’t know that was a thing- thanks!
Had you heard of this card? What would a PSA 3 go for today?
