I'm writing this for anyone who thinks helmets are not necessary as I can't tell if your comment it a joke... When I hike, I will at most have a 5-6ft fall from my head to the ground. The speed of my fall can easily be handled by my arms and it's unlikely to actually damage my head. Imagine falling from vertical into a plank position, you can prevent yourself from slamming into the ground. You're much more likely to twist an ankle or pull a muscle when hiking. Head injuries are more rare. On a road bike, a fall at almost any speed can be fatal or life changing. While I average around 20-25 kmph, it's common to exceed 50 or 60 kmph at times and a head on collision at this speed without a helmet is almost impossible to survive. Imagine a brick being thrown at your head at 60 kmph...or imagine falling from a 2/3 storey building and trying to stop your fall with your arms....it's horrying to crash at speed on a bike and I apologise for creating this image. I have unfortunately been in a horrible cycling crash once in my life (no fault of my own) and my helmet likely saved my life, or at least my quality of life. The helmet shattered, cracked and crushed to absorb a huge amount of energy that otherwise would have gone directly into my skull and brain. I had a serious concussion but thankfully walked away. The helmet also absorbs rotational forces as well as direct impacts, which also helps protect the brain. Bike helmets are awesome, I care about you and hope you use one!
I've been using these for about 5 years and I love them. The bass isn't as pronounced but it's a nice trade off for being able to have a conversation while listening to a podcast or being able to just hear traffic around you while jamming, etc. you can also pop in some ear plugs and the bass will get better.
The occlusive effect of putting in earbuds with these really do enhance the bass. I only tried it once (when cutting the grass) and it was such an interesting experience. Thanks for sharing your experience too!
Fun thing to do with these: if you firmly press them on your elbow and press your hand on your ear, it feels like there's a party in your body like the one in Adventure Time!
Honestly I use them for these kinds of fun experiments only, since I've never been quite a fan of the sound quality. I tried lots of combinations like ankle to knee or teeth or whatever material I find around that conducts the sound. Everything turns into cool different filters/amplifiers. same, ever since owning my Aftershokz (started with Titanium now I have the OpenRun) I never leave the house without them. Had them for about 4-5 years and cant imagine living without a soundtrack 24/7 now. I also carry earplugs with me in case I do want to block out the world and get lost in the music.
They're too quiet. I had some, I had to push them deep into my temples HARD in order to hear much, and any nearby traffic or a strong wind produced too much noise to hear anything at all. So quiet!!! So the ones you have must be magic!!
Nice to see a sound engineer making a review of these. I’ve been curious of the sound quality and if they would work when you record vocals in the studio. (To minimise bleed thru from monitors or ordinary headphones.)
@inthemix Happy to see you're better Michael. My main takeaway from this video is how important fitness and health is in music production. Probably the best way to listen to music whilst riding is what Dom Whiting on UA-cam is doing, playing Drum & Bass on his bike. Have you seen his videos?

When I work out, if I use ear buds the sweat irritates my ear canals and I sometimes get ear zits which as you can imagine are, just as awful and terrible to deal with. I found a pair of these and was very impressed, only drawback is it doesn't block your ear so if you DONT want to hear your surroundings you do. 😅 Really cool that you made this video, I'm glad this information is going to get to a large audience who have maybe never heard of them that might be in a situation where they are tired of or don't like using using ear buds.
I am so glad you found a pair that worked out for you! Those ear canal spots/irritations are unfortunately very common when ears are plugged up. I previously thought my ear fatigue was due to the sound pressure but it was actually more likely the heat and sweat!
Thanks for this video. I have a decent pair of over-ear Bluetooth "ear buds" but haven't been using them because they interfered with hearing ambient sounds. I have three dogs who like to go in different directions when we walk. I live in the centre-ville of a resort town. Lots of people and cars that I need to be aware of to keep my puppers safe. I went back and forth, but finally decided on the Sonic model. I just ordered them from Amazon France for 139 € (discounted price for the Lime color; the Black model was 155 €). Delivery scheduled for tomorrow. I am SO looking forward to listening to music again for the 2 hours per day we spend on walks. Thanks again.
I'm currently missing the 3 bones in my left middle ear so my hearing on that side is severely compromised at the moment. Thanks for doing a video about this and bringing it back to my attention. I had heard of this some years back when my hearing was better, but didn't consider it much at the time - I'll definitely be looking into this again and hope to try a set out somehow. Would be great to have some stereo back in my life cause right now everything is kind of mono and panned to my right!
I hope they work for you but given your unique situation I would definitely check with your doctor first. Hopefully these are safe for you to use and enjoy!
Thorough as usual. When you go to an audiologist (to get earplug impressions made) you can also have this bone conduction test and a bunch more done. Anyone serious about a life with music should do this at least once to baseline their hearing, and learn about hearing protection that works for your lifestyle. Good luck all.
I bought a pair of Trekz Titanium bone conduction headphones some years ago in a running shop, and they're still working well and holding their charge. I use them all the time, even around the house when doing chores etc. so I can listen to podcasts and audiobooks. You're right about the bass cut, although I was intrigued to see the bass port idea and I wonder how much difference that would make. The guy who sold me mine was hearing impaired, and actually had bone conduction implants. His hearing aid consisted of a pickup device that plugged into a socket on his skull. He showed me, and it was amazing, like he was a kind of cyborg :) He said it had really changed his life to be able to hear so clearly. I guess he must have had a middle ear issue of some kind but his inner ear worked perfectly so it was a good solution for him.
I also use bone-conductive headphones. I likes to use them also when working in the office. It is great, that coworkers can approach me and I can hear them.
@@inthemix I don't understand how you could possibly hear anything when the ones I had were drowned out by the subtle rumbles of traffic, literally any external noise and I couldn't hear anything at max volume.
"The auricle (pinna) is the visible portion of the outer ear. It collects sound waves and channels them into the ear canal (external auditory meatus), where the sound is amplified."
That frequency adjustment demonstration was exactly what people need in a review about such devices. It would be interesting to see your opinion if Shokz are any better, and the pros/cons of air conduction with similar auditory sample comparison.

That's nice, I can't really stand earbuds, and can't use the big headphone outside, so this seems like a perfect alternative. For the bass, maybe you can pair it with a subpac (not the best though)
Neat video. Just bought them and wanted them to work but I do not understand that product. I am not audiophile at all but they sound like a very old tape. Very flat, unpleasant tinny, like through a funnel. I do not like the sensation or that vibration shortcut through the bone either. Sad to return them after 5 minutes. Like the looks of it though and the fit.
Clip on headphones(I like panasonic rphz47) are a cheap alternative that are more ergonomic/less sound fatigue for like $15 if you dont have $100+ for music
With the sonic version, the one with the speaker, will others be able to hear what you're listening to? I would like these for work, but I don't want my colleagues to hear what im listening to.
Hey Michael, Thanks for the review. One thing I've been curious about is how much 'noise leak' would you say these have? For example, if someone were to wear these out in public, be it at the local gym, or wearing it in a subway or train or on a plane, is there noticeable noise leak that you could hear music playing on someone who is next to you, 5 feet away, etc.? I've been interested in these types of headphones, but also feel like I don't want to become part of the noise pollution problem in public of subjecting others to my music out loud. Any thoughts on how much noise others would pick up around you if you wear these in more public areas? Like would this be acceptable for cycling but rude to be sitting next to someone on public transportation with? Thanks in advance.
Great question! I wish I had addressed this in the video. At normal listening volumes there will be some noise bleed. I think 5ft away in a gym would be okay but you would hear it when sat next to someone. I noticed that better fit resulted in less noise leak.
You should test some kinda haptic system like a SubPac, I've wanted to get one of those bass kickers for awhile just because they're alot cheaper (those aren't portable though). I think there's alot of potential for haptic technology in sound. Like haptics in phones for instance (because they lack low end)
I think you failed to emphasize one very important point for these considering what your channel is about. Can you recommend these solely for listening to music? You answered the most important question; how does the music sound. But what it actually means in practice? What I mean is that when your ears are open to everything, how does that "everything" interact with the music? Does one drown out the other? Does it depend on the volume of either the headphones or outside sounds? How the volume affect these, especially the frequency response and how loud these even go? I hope to get a bit more in-depth analysis from these on that front! I think you'd be the first qualified sound engineer to ever having done that, if you will.
To answer that question as simply as possible, it is like any other frequency masking situation. If you were to have a lot of midrange in your envious around you, the songs midrange will be less easy to hear clearly. Other than that, the outside world doesn’t interact with the sound at all from what I can hear!
How do you think they would work on stage? So, instead of using in-ear monitors use these bone conducting ones. Do you think that is a viable application
Ah yes... of course... if it was using traditional transmitters and frequencies do you think it would work? IEM's just really disconnect people even with Ambient microphones... so I wonder if this is a direction that monitoring could go so that you'd always have your actual ears and then could hear on top of that
These bone conduction headphones seem to be a bit of a con. They are described as having a transducer which sends vibrations to the cochlea via the jaw bone. This implies they are silent unless they are in contact with your bones. Actually though there is no transducer, but a loudspeaker in a sealed waterproof coating. Sound waves are thus transmitted in two ways, through bone and through air. In other words, they can be heard by nearby people. Also, the frequency response is very limited, they sound very thin. I bought two expensive pairs and sent them both back. Michael, why are you supporting this con?
I have checked, you are right it does not appear to be working. I have contacted Suunto and will await a fix. I am sure they will honour the discount if you reach to them but I appreciate your patience!
Hello sir, I saw Your videos and that was Very Nice.. Could You Please teach a Advance Vocal Processing Technic with FL Studio Stock Plugins...If You Show Me How To Do Advance Vocal Processing That Will be very nice for me.. Thank You Sir.
It's been a while since they're out though, right? I've seen them couple years ago for sure. They're quite muddy. But IF you need to be aware of surrounding, or care about your hearing, you'll be happy with these!
I've been curious about these for years but never tried them out...how do you think they would hold up using them under a motorbike helmet for calls and navigation?
I have a feeling that a motorbike helmet might press into them or the head band at the back of the neck. I have never worn a motorcycle helmet but I imagine they have to be pretty snug to be protective?
Your helmet may cover the mic..Shokz open com with the boom mic may even cancel enough wind noize. .I've heard the Air conduction sunglasses (Bose..) sound good and fit well under a bike helmet.
EQ helps but unfortunately the lower frequency vibrations can never have enough energy to create the same fullness as regular headphones without excessive vibration against the face (in my experience). I did think that EQ improved them though. I think everyone should eq any headphones or speakers to suit them!
I never buy any product were i can't see the price first and what's the bass like because its false advertising on there site when they say enhanced bass

I wonder if strangers would sound more like npcs with that running constantly in your head...

Can the battery be replaced by the user, 10 years from now if needed?
Clip on headphones(I like panasonic rphz47) are a cheap alternative that are more ergonomic/less sound fatigue for like $15 if you dont have $100+ for music
They don’t allow you to hear the world around you though. I have tried those and they fall right off my ears.
could there be a bone conduction headphone with studio reference sound?
With the sonic version, the one with the speaker, will others be able to hear what you're listening to? I would like these for work, but I don't want my colleagues to hear what im listening to.
All bone conduction headphones do leak some sound, they will not be 100% private. I think regular pass through ear buds would be better for working.
Hey Michael,
Thanks for the review.
Does the led continually stay on or blink while connected, if so can the led be disabled?
YOOO this is a gamechanger for playing VR
I haven't tried VR yet but I imagine this would be good if you were playing with many people in the same room...
You should test some kinda haptic system like a SubPac, I've wanted to get one of those bass kickers for awhile just because they're alot cheaper (those aren't portable though). I think there's alot of potential for haptic technology in sound. Like haptics in phones for instance (because they lack low end)
I have had quite a few suggestions for this, it might be time to try it!
There’s no for UK ?!
Every news comes from you Dad , thanks ever so much 🙏
i have both and i once put on my bc and earbuds at the same time, playing the same song and it was .....interesting
How do you think they would work on stage?
So, instead of using in-ear monitors use these bone conducting ones.
Do you think that is a viable application
I don’t think regular Bluetooth is going to have a stable enough latency to work for stage work.
Ah yes... of course... if it was using traditional transmitters and frequencies do you think it would work?
IEM's just really disconnect people even with Ambient microphones... so I wonder if this is a direction that monitoring could go so that you'd always have your actual ears and then could hear on top of that
In-ears are also used to block out a lot of sound. So you'd also have to wear headphones on top of them to avoid hearing damage.
Have you ever tried those vests with subwoofers in them? These kinda remind me of those
Promo codes don't work in the US as of now
Thank you for letting me know. I am getting it sorted and will update soon!
They are now working. They can be used on the US Amazon store.
Thank you!
very cool
I love your videos if just for the fact you don't yell "HI GUYS!!!"
The discount code for the sonic model isnt valid
I have checked, you are right it does not appear to be working. I have contacted Suunto and will await a fix. I am sure they will honour the discount if you reach to them but I appreciate your patience!

I love them for work meetings, but they typically have no bass. Very tinny.

Interesting! Is there any bleed using them?
Yes there is some bleed around you, it’s hard to notice it outside but indoors other people sitting next to you might hear your music quietly.
I think these ones have only been out for a few months. Some other models have been around for a few years.

@@inthemix That was my fear, that the conductors themselves might stick out too far and create pressure...back to the buds it is then...cheers mate
@@wreckronomic6663yeah I think that might be safer and more comfortable. Be safe out there mate.
Your helmet may cover the mic..Shokz open com with the boom mic may even cancel enough wind noize. .I've heard the Air conduction sunglasses (Bose..) sound good and fit well under a bike helmet.
This could be good inside motorcycle helmet.
But I wanna conduct the whole orchestra not just the 'bones
Can you EQ them to get the bass on par with other headphones?
EQ helps but unfortunately the lower frequency vibrations can never have enough energy to create the same fullness as regular headphones without excessive vibration against the face (in my experience). I did think that EQ improved them though. I think everyone should eq any headphones or speakers to suit them!
I never buy any product were i can't see the price first and what's the bass like because its false advertising on there site when they say enhanced bass
The price is open to see on any website that sells them and I mention the price in this video. The focus was more on the technology and how they improve my quality of life.

Can you send me the data or any studies on that? I looked quite extensively into it and couldn’t find any issues at normal listening levels. They even use this technology to allow partially deaf people to regain hearing.
