I don't even play SMT and I find it kind of insulting that they wouldn't even redo the cutscenes for a supposedly "fully remastered" game. It's like the shit Capcom pulled on Resident evil 4
@@areallyrealisticguyd4333 There's the possibility of the source files being lost. IIRC, JP companies that aren't Nintendo usually don't archive stuff after developing games. Doesn't excuse the music though, especially if those have official uncompressed versions released.
if they remastered it in Unity, then that means that they rewrote the entire logic in Unity, that means someone had to implement the random skill inheritance, and not do anything about it
Pain :'( Although I hear its in a wrapper in unity, not exactly remade. Regardless they are still editing parts of the game (i.e. translating Raidou version)
I read in some interviews that they were absolutely obsessed with posterity and parity with the original version. They were actively avoiding changes from the original, hiring QA staff to make sure the game was as similar to the original as possible. I think we can tell with this attitude, that adding QoL changes and modern conveniences was something they were actively avoiding

Think they are misunderstanding what people wanted. Unfortunate. Atlus is pretty spectacular at some things, one of the best at a few, but also extremely poor at others and fairly egregious with DLC at an EA-lite level.
@@PathBeyondTheDark I guess they thought too many more changes and they'd get hate for it. I get that, but they could have put out a questionaire for fans
6:43 So this remasters level of quality is more so on the same level as the Devil may cry hd collection. Atlus, just because Dante is in the game, that doesn't mean you need to put in the same level of effort as Capcom.
It's really disheartening to know that the HD Remaster has severe frame rate drops and compressed music EVEN THOUGH Altus released the uncompressed beautifully sounding OST like 10 years ago. What happened to this game?
Fortunately, the frame rate issues only harbor on the Switch version. From what I’ve heard and seen, the PS4 version is quite smooth as far as frame rates go.
I'm not buying into Atlus being somehow inept at translating. We live in an age where anime episodes are simulcast/subbed the day of release, vtubers can have 6 hour streams translated and subbed within the same day, and fucking Final Fantasy 7 Remake having a worldwide simultaneous release in multiple languages with multiple voice dubbing tracks. Let's not pretend Atlus is broke - they make BANK rereleasing every Persona game twice. This isn't a translating issue - its an Atlus issue expecting the thirsty fanbase to eat up whatever bullshit they put out.
They're adding english voice acting, add that with the pandemic, and I can see why it would be a problem. China and Korea don't have to wait because their versions just have the japanese voices. Now, to nitpick the simulcast thing, they don't actually translate the episodes of anime in 1 hour. Translators get ahold of the literal script for the episode at least a week in advance. While you can get translations kinda fast, high quality professional-grade translations take time.
A lot of people have pity parties for Atlus and I don't know why. Nocturne doesn't even have long cutscenes or that many instances of voice acting assuming generic npcs aren't voiced. Atlus doesn't need to overcharge us for DLC either. At least when NIS does it they were on the verge of bankruptcy, but Atlus just does it because they know that fans will let them get away with scummy practices.
Simulcast translation quality can be really spotty. Unless it's Funimation or something where they can get the script ahead of time. And that's really it, it's about coordinating with international teams. I feel Japanese developers don't really hand anything off until they have the game mastered and ready for production.
Frame rate issues, still compressed soundtrack, no quality of life features such as choosing skills during fusion. What a shame. Should’ve just remade the whole game from the ground up.
So disappointed... Rerolling skills during fusion takes so much time and it's nerve-wrecking when you can't get the skill you want. Lucky for games such as P4G and P5/R.
@@pepperpickles I'd be surprised if it didn't. I'm not sure if I want to buy it for any other platform now. I was planning on getting the switch version because I liked the idea of having it on a portable system, but now that it's apparent that the Switch performance is awful, Steam is the most "portable platform" for me, as I can just log in to a PC if I'm visiting someone and download the game there and get the save files from Steam Cloud. Or play it on a laptop.
If you have been following the news or leaks if you want to call it that, there have been someone on twitter who found a code in the SMT 3 Nocturne that lists STEAM alongside PS4 ans Switch, so I'd say at most the game "might" get released on STEAM alongside or after the west release EDIT : Nevermind, it's been mentioned hahaha
@@kittykat5090 When it comes to slowdown we don't have that issue nowadays, pretty much all TVs over here in the PAL region and releases here don't suffer from the old 50hz/60hz issue anymore, its still something to keep in mind for retro gamers but most of us over here try to play and use consoles in the NTSC format so we can have the full speed and no slowdown with older titles. When it comes to never getting releases, especially with certain companies like Atlus, its still rough but at least they're making more and more progress.
If P3, P4 and P5 are any indication, we should expect some high quality VA for the most part. It's difficult finding many other JP games with Persona levels of voicework quality + quantity though... (maybe FF7:R).
Given we didn't even get HALF of the games Atlus brought out, let alone games from the likes of Square Enix, Nintendo, Sega, Konami and such back in the day to name afew, us in PAL territories have suffered far, far, FAR worse. Its sad that while region locking is becoming less and less of an issue, the fact we still have to even question if we're getting something now is just depressing.
Started playing the English Version on my roommate's PS5. The English Voice Acting, in my opinion, is pretty damn good from what I've heard (I'm at the Diet Building and I just got Raidou in the 5th Kalpa.) The fact that they didn't even hesitate to just outright cut Raidou out of the Chinese version of the game should say it all; they don't really care about SMT, just Persona.
@@UltLuigi1 yes, it is an old game, but also is one of their best known games, al least within the rpg genre it is known by virtually everyone. @@RandallHidalgoS21allas96 "within the RPG genre it is known by everyone" That's the flaw in your logic. Atlus doesn't make games for RPG fans anymore. They make games for Persona fans and sometimes SMT fans, with the odd port from a decade ago
Technically, Atlus are right. It's only an HD remaster. They weren't obliged to change the gameplay, performance or music. But it would have been very, very nice.
They didn't want to make any significant changes, but apparently still had few qualms about charging $50+ for what is basically just a reskin... Then again, that's pretty much modern Atlus in a nutshell..!
I played the original nocturne and I was so excited for this one... I guess I’ll just wait and see if it gets a steam release and mod the shit out of it if it does :/
If it comes out on Steam, there's gonna be a lot of improvements within the modding scene Edit: For example, some of the flaws that Nyarly talked about like the compressed music, text only ui, and random skill inheritance could get fixed with mods
Improvements already exist with Hardtype romhack, it "is" harder but it feels overall more balanced in a way, and you can at least choose between Maniax with Raidou or vanilla or Hardtype with Dante based on your preference and whether you've played the game before or not.
Wasn't compressed audio part of the atmosphere? And maybe Atlus didn't put all their resources into a full remaster. They could have pulled a Xenoblade Definitve Edition and had to pick and choose what to fix because of a deadline.
The skill inheritance it's a deal breaker from me. I loved playing this game, but I can't bear to waste hours mashing X and O, X and O, X and O again... What a shame
And here I am pissed more about sacrifice fusion leveling the fused Demon, especially in high level Demon cases (METATRON), forcing me to level well above their normal level (METATRON) to fuse.
Right? I have about 80 or so hours in Devil Survivor Overclocked and I cannot imagine that game without that function. I didn’t even know that wasn’t always a thing until I saw this video. That alone just made me lose almost all my interest in the game. Only thing slightly keeping it afloat is the fact that I’ve never played Nocturne before
@@newdivide9882 Then play the English-patched Chronicles version on emulator, because HD ain't worth however much it costs (I'm just going to assume $60) with an added $10 for Dante (who admittedly got buffed, but still can't be used alongside his replacement from Chronicles). Or wait for it to come out on Steam, as I heard there's some code or something that was datamined hinting at a possible Steam release. At least then you can mod in the Uncompressed music if nothing else.
Merciful difficulty sounds like the 'Enjoy the story' difficulty. In a game where, while the story is good, is mostly atmosphere with some cutscenes. 'Enjoy the story' is something that works more for games like the newer Persona games, where there's so much story and characters to focus on.
exactly, I can see why they would have this feature in like Nier: Automata for example, but in games like Smt or Persona, the difficulty is a part of the fun. Having to build a team and form strategies to win is what makes the games good
etrian odyssey does the same thing with pinic mode. it's basically a joke difficulty that's impossible to ever lose in and you can autobattle everything. eo at least has a story mode to look to but nocturne only offers like 5 minute blips every few hours, so besides grinding for the last magatamas i can't see a use for this, both casually and as a hardcore fan of the game
I kinda feel that way with Fire Emblem and the casual mode option Being able to keep a character that died in combat in a game that was intended to make you feel the emotional weight for losing a comrade in the battlefield is just... weird to say the least So yeah I don't like this kind of option either
@@RonaldoVODS Smt varies in difficulty, the thing with building characters in 4 and persona is that you have to play on the highest difficulties cause if you don't any form of strategizing or building completely ruins the difficulty. What makes me upset, is that when 3HD fails outside of japan; (which it will because not only is it a full price port with no new content, but it's also releasing close to SMTV which more newcomers will prefer to wait for) Atlus will most likely decide not to re-release any other older megatens and that sucks. I like Nocturne, and the idea of playing it on something stronger than my shitty 12 yr old laptop is nice, but man......who knows maybe they'll have paid dlc for new content......
Its probably not going to be fully priced. Japanese versions of the games are always overpriced. Catherine Full Body on the switch is $75 on the Japanese eShop but $50 in the west. Persona 5 Royal is $90 on the Japanese PSN Store, but $60 in the west. This'll probably end up somewhere between $30-$40.
As long as it does well in Japan it will be fine (to Atlus), and it will have at least a few months before they get SMTV there. I am also concerned that this game won't do well outside of Japan, but maybe the nintendo direct push and general goodwill toward Nocturne will help it sell decently...
Debut sales for physical in Japan was 100k. That's pretty decent sales for Japan and Atlus' priority when it comes to a successful title is always Japan. So Nocturne remaster having good sales alone in Japan is enough for to consider bringing older SMT games and whatnot.
I would have honestly tolerated any of the other issues if they added manual fusion inheritance. Without that I have zero desire to ever get this remaster, especially since I still have a functional PS2.
@@jazzhands8525 If you've never played Nocturne before and getting a legal PS2 copy is unfeasible, I'd say wait and get the remaster used. @@jazzhands8525 I'll say yes, get it. The game is an amazing experience by itself and having access to it on modern day consoles is great. The game may lack in some areas but it doesn't change the fact that Nocturne is a good SMT game. However, I won't deny the fact that this could have been much more if Atlus had put more effort and maybe waited a little more before releasing it.
That reminds me I heard somewhere that because overclocked was fully voiced the devs were worried that the 3DS wouldn’t be able to handle it because the game was extremely dialogue heavy
Two years in development and no one said "Ya think we should let the player choose what skills they want for their Demons when fusing is good idea." "It's embarrassing how incomplete Atlus is when translating" Nyarly, please, meet Falcom. Great games, great translations but awfully long WW release times.
This is completely different though, Falcom doesn't translate their own games, other companies do it for them. You would never play a Ys or LoH in english if they were taking care of the translation (also LoH scripts are infinitely bigger than any SMT game, so eh)
So basically ATLUS is like any other nigh-independent Japanese company: slow (or outright refusal) to embrace new innovations.Yeah.... I have a bunch of old Final Fantasy games on Steam, plus _rEmAsTeReD_ Dark Souls to quickly get what's really going on. Try doing business with a Japanese company somewhere and you'd understand; they're slow at everything in general. It's not just a ATLUS problem, it's a culturally Japanese problem.

It is Sept. 24 2021. I recently purchased SMT 3: Nocturne for the Nintendo switch. They fixed some issues that you mention in the video. Fusions/sacrifice fusions now allow you to select or randomize whatever skills your demons learn. Have yet to notice slow down, so far (messed up a choice early on with Pixie and had to restart, so I am only at the third kalpa now). This My first time playing SMT3 Nocturne on any system and I am having a blast. Heck I am eager to play the rest of the SMT/Persona series and hope it makes it to the switch as well. (Got what I could for PS3 And PsVita, but would love to have it all on a single system.)
I’m going to get this game soon and I also don’t really mind that they didn’t remaster much bc I am just excited to play nocturne for the first time :)
Sadness. At least we are not back in the era where Atlus cut content because they tried to localized the game *glares at persona* but that's a low bar to surpass tbf
No need for the "kind of". It's a dissapointment, yeah it's nice to be able to play the game in newer consoles, but even for a remaster it doesn't make a lot, and for what I read it has things that are even worse than the original. It's cool that we can play it and even better for new fans with better graphics, and the voice acting sounds nice, but it's not that big of a deal.
I'm hoping the price is at MOST 40$ because this is like a 20$ value for this remaster. If they keep the price low than the expectations for this will be much lower for the game. I still think that the compressed audio and cutscenes ripped straight from the ps2 version is still unexcusable though.
I can say that it is likely at least some of the Scramble delay is due to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity being way higher on their priority list. You pointed out that they've been working their asses off to get HW out in a timely manner, and I def don't expect them to do that plus Scramble during a global pandemic and I'm not surprised a Persona spinoff was pushed back in favor of a literal prequel to Breath of the Wild.
It's also simply the difference between Nintendo money and Atlus money; Nintendo's gonna push their shit out when they want it out, pandemic or no. They'll make absolutely certain they create a safe environment for their localization team and get it done ASAP. They have the money to do that. Atllus not only doesn't have that sort of money, they also consistently underestimate the impact of their games in the West. Nintendo is a worldwide sensation and household name, and while they've gained popularity in recent years, Atlus still develops relatively niche games designed predominantly for a Japanese market, whether they're owned by SEGA or not. Likely they and Koei Tecmo WANT to get Scramble out in the West, but there's too much else going on right now. Underestimating the effects that a pandemic has on a company that already takes forever to localize products is pretty foolish.
Gamers cant connect the dots and use common sense. They’d rather cry and shit themselves over having to wait a bit to play a game instead of playing the 100’s they still have untouched
@@PunishedPrince you replying to a different comment, my guy? regardless, a company should make their best attempts to release versions with alternate languages within a month or two at most of the original release. No change to the skill inheritance, no buy. It's that simple. I love, love, LOVE Nocturne, played it again just recently and had a pretty good time, but I just don't think I have the patience to go through random skill inheritance hell yet again. If there was one thing, ANY one thing they absolutely had to change to make this remaster worth it, it was that. Dang, what a bummer. :c

"Why do people use emulators???" This. This is why. Why would I buy half-assed "remaster" of a game when I can just emulate a 4k upscaled version of it that will almost no doubt look better? If companies are gonna push remasters, they should at least make an honest effort to improve the quality, not some lame retexturing and no game/menu changes. Idk mang, people are out of touch i guess
Maybe atlus only have much time for making smt v and persona 5 strikers? Since the localisation of p5s takes so long because of the Covid-19 & release of PC
The emulated version does not even remotely -- not even the realm of pretend -- look "better" than any remaster. Upscaled assets and textures will never look better. The ONLY people who say emulators make old games look better than remasters, are people like you who actively DON'T buy remasters, so obviously you'd have no idea what they actually look like. Kinda funny how that works out eh?
Remember when Atlus basically made like half a game with Persona 3 Portable's female protagonist? P3P was like a game and a half, given how much stuff FeMC has that Makoto doesn't. Most games that let you choose your gender barely change anything between the two. Usually it's just stuff like: who you can date/marry, different characters exclusive to that gender, etc. P3P did that and so much more.
> "makoto" Cringe. There are no canon names. The games wouldn't have so many options to adopt your own name, personality and choices if there was ever an intent to have a "canon" / "correct" version of events. Say P3 protagonist.
Man, I remember buying my copy of it 10 years ago to date... I couldn't find an NA version anywhere, so I got my PS2 modded and bought the EU version (Lucifer's Call). I know a lot of people are disappointed (only thing I'm really sad about is lack of skill selection during inheritance) but this is still my favourite game so I'll probably buy it on all platforms nevertheless :/
It's really upsetting to see legacy content treated like this. I only hope new fans will be able to fall in love with this game like I did the original Nocturne.

According to interviews, they spent two years working on this Remaster... somehow. Feels like a lot of time to spend on something when they don't care about the thing and just want something out "quick".

If I understand the japanese patch notes correctly, the latest patch for the remaster added the option to choose skills during fusion! (or at least to directly reroll on the results page? It's phrased sort of weird) Can anyone confirm this? If this is true - fuck yeah! Now they only need to re-render the cutscenes so they're no longer crunchy as hell, add uncompressed audio and maybe a harder difficulty and the remaster is perfect... that's never gonna happen. The thing outright frys itself being charged in a non 1st party dock; they coded it that way so consumers have to buy an overpriced dock. Do you not remember how bad the Switch's launch was? They're as bad as apple now, entirely anti consumer. Those 3 points you mentioned are huge, especially the marketing practices; they constantly sell lackluster ports for MORE than their competitors. Look at the recent case with the one user on reddit who sent his Switch out for repairs and they sent him back a BANNED console; which took a massive twitter/front page campaign to even get corrected. They ignored him for months. All this being said, I enjoy my Switch, but the past 3 years has really opened my eyes to just how awful game publishers can be.
I don't mind the lack of changes that much, being able to play Nocturne with better visuals on my PS4 and switch (frame rate issues are still had but its better than nothing) is a really great thing I'm excited to get
have you considered the delay wasn't a localization issue but rather a marketing decision? for instance perhaps seeing how it sells in japan first or even data collection to see what needs to be fixed (cause it really seems very few game companies even bother to play test thier games before shipping out broken products anymore)
Barebones is a word I think describes this HD port the best. Just something made with the least possible effort just to give the illusion that they are caring about mainline while it is left in Persona's shadow. And one thing I felt you forgot to mention on top of the framerate issues are the much longer load times on top of that and the poor visuals and animation glitches. Becomes especially noticeable when you are trying to fuse something and have to redo it over and over. That stuff adds up.
This could’ve been a really good remaster, especially for how awesome V sounds like it’s going to be. They didn’t have to go totally all out, but ATLUS Could’ve added a HD soundtrack, and reworked the frame rate, and they could’ve added a explanation of the skills when you view the stats screen. And localize the limited edition. For a company that has over 500 Billion¥ it sounds like a simple task.
While I'm not a fan of long delays between Japanese release dates either, there's a few points to keep in mind that might further justify it (not including Covid). 1. Atlus West doesn't just localise SMT stuff anymore, they also do all of SEGA's other stuff which is a lot (Yakuza, Phantasy Star, Sakura Wars etc) 2. I imagine it's a less stressful work flow for devs to just focus on the japanese release and hand it off to translators after it's done. Though this seems to be improving. 3. Since 2017 Altus has finally (FINALLLLLLLY) opened a European branch, which means they now also localise for several other countries, so that'll be something to adapt to. (Seriously, when I hear people from North American talk about the increase in delays, I just want to shout about what it's been like to be an Atlus fan in Europe for all these years XD)
Man, considering what they did with Persona 4 Golden and 5 Royal, this is pretty underwhelming, i would still like to get this, specially if it actually ends up on PC, but still, very disappointing.
SMT nocturne Remastered released on Steam *SMT modders :* I'm gonna fix this game Add 4k resolution cut scenes Add icon on battle menu Add reshade to apply ray tracing Add impossible difficulty Add persona cast onto Dante DLC Add BGM to fixed audio issues etc.
Maybe that's their endgame going forward with steam releases. "fix it yourself." It's unfortunate and I hope not true but this is Capitalism so long as consumers continue to throw money at corporations.
It seems like the delay in the English release is the best thing that ever happened to this game - since a few things, like demon fusions, have been fixed.
Literally every atlus 3ds re-release had so much love and care put into them, and now on the big mainline console game they put out this, i don't get it.

I played Nocturne for the first time a year ago and Normal was already way too easy so I'd say newcomers should stick to that. A custom difficulty akin to P4 Golden would be better since I would like hard combat but less grinding.
@@HoboKa_AlexShtokalko Nocturne was my first non Persona SMT game and I found it fairly easy during combat. I don't play any JRPG's aside from SMT too. I have heard Strange Journey and DDS 2 are the hardest in the series but I couldn't say personally.
"I don't like playing games in a language I don't understand" fair enough, I'd say, but you can count your blessing for being a native English Speaker. Most of the world couldn't play great games like... well, this whole saga (including Persona) for that same reason XD. Including me. Thank God, it looks like they're caching up to the fact that "hey, maybe not all gaijin speak English" and "also, guys, wouldn't be a bother to play a game with a script matching that of a 5 season series in a foreign language. Wouldn't that kill any interest you might have". Also, Dude, Age of Calamity must have a word count like 90% smaller than SMT... come on, let's be fair here. You also have to take into account that Atlus outsources the translations, while Nintendo has permanent translators already in, so they probably translate as the game is being developed. What I mean is that is a bit unfair that you state you don't like playing games you don't get and then complain about the translations slowing things down. I get it, they already have an English translation. But understand that it is reasonable that they don't want to have us Europeans waiting while they release the game in English only. Oh, and one more thing: the English VO takes time, of course, it's not just a matter of getting the actors together, dubbing it and that's it. Quality control and stuff plays a part after. Anyway, great video; very useful.
I am currently playing through the JP version (as a Japanese speaker) and I don't have nearly the complaints you do. Yeah I would have liked some quality of life changes but I didn't expect any either from a remaster; I pretty much got what I was expecting to get. I also haven't experienced the same performance issues you have on the Switch. For me, it has been very smooth outside of one instance in the Mantra base. Also, not sure where you got it that made you pay 6500 Yen but you got ripped off, lol; it retails for just under 5,400 Yen. Oh, and with regards to the voice acting, it's top quality just like with most Japanese games nowadays. On to a different topic though, specifically what you brought up about localization quality from Atlus West at the beginning. As someone who has worked in translation/localization professionally it does get a little irritating when people who don't know how that industry works complain about things taking a long time; it's not always a case of just translating the game and calling it good. Now with regards to Nocturne in particular, it is odd since the game has already been localized. Also, I do agree with you that Atlus West's quality has dropped, but not for the same reasons; the bigger issue is that the actual quality of their translations has dropped significantly. P5R, for example, was filled with mistranslations, poor translations, and just completely incorrect dialogue.

Atlus fans are truly the simps of the gaming world
A lot of people have pity parties for Atlus and I don't know why.
Lol Final Fantasy VII Remake wouldn't be my first choice as evidence for your argument..

Debut sales for physical in Japan was 100k. That's pretty decent sales for Japan and Atlus' priority when it comes to a successful title is always Japan. So Nocturne remaster having good sales alone in Japan is enough for to consider bringing older SMT games and whatnot.

Remember when Atlus basically made like half a game with Persona 3 Portable's female protagonist? P3P was like a game and a half, given how much stuff FeMC has that Makoto doesn't. Most games that let you choose your gender barely change anything between the two. Since I play Persona since the first part I can say P3P is my favorite Persona game. I enjoy a female perspective

They're as bad as apple now, entirely anti consumer. Those 3 points you mentioned are huge, especially the marketing practices; they constantly sell lackluster ports for MORE than their competitors. Barebones is a word I think describes this HD port the best. Just something made with the least possible effort just to give the illusion that they are caring about mainline while it is left in Persona's shadow.

1. Atlus West doesn't just localise SMT stuff anymore, they also do all of SEGA's other stuff which is a lot (Yakuza, Phantasy Star, Sakura Wars etc)

@@zombiethieves3736 smt games are generally only hard if you don't adapt to boss fights. They require you to engage with the mechanics
I'm thinking about how the Gakuran in Persona 1,2, and 4 are fine but Raidou's gakuran is "too imperialistic" was it the hat and cape?
I don’t understand why people expect every remaster to change things when it isn’t advertised to do that
