- Science is the endeavor that allows us to describe our natural world and how it works. Science gives us the power and knowledge to understand our environment, recognize problems, and quantify threats. But science doesn’t tell us how to use that knowledge. Our planet’s most pressing environmental problems won’t be solved by science. Preserving water resources, facing the immediate and measurable threats from global climate change, reducing waste generation, and solving the myriad environmental challenges facing humans can only be achieved by cultural change. A society represents a collection of individual behaviors…every one of us is responsible for behavioral change. But do we have the personal and political wherewithal to make those changes before we must manage crises? Paul K. Doss is Professor of Geology at the University of Southern Indiana, where he teaches courses on environmental geology, environmental science, geology of national parks, and water resources. Doss directs student research on environmental problems, such as impacts of humans on water resources, natural resources management and geological hazards. He has previously held positions with Yellowstone National Park, Indiana Dunes and Everglades National Park. The most developed countries have the main responsibility because they have enjoyed the natural resources more than others, and have the education and economic resources to make the change we all need. Save the planet is our responsibility but some have more options than others.
Ok so what do i do as an individual? I recycle, I do t buy bottled water, what else do i do?
@@marisabeltran3084 Great question! It sounds like you are already doing a great job! If time permits, you may be able to join beach clean-ups or other pro-environmental activities in your area?
@@marisabeltran3084 just avoid products to reach landfills.... Think about how you can repurpose them
I find interesting that scientists already have the answer but it requires a cultural change for it to be viable.

it's worth noting that this current culture of overconsumption and earth damaging waste wasn't possible before the industrial revolution and the rise of "capitalism", but the culture of greed and selfishness, which began with the agricultural revolution, laid the mental groundwork for it.
conquering earth for profit became more important than living in harmony with nature.
it's very sad to see how much humanity has truly regressed behaviorally.....
especially when you listen to them talk about how technologically advanced they are...

You are absolutely on point here, the natural balance we COULD be enjoying and appreciating, is nearing a tipping point, and, we, as a culture and society, are rushing towards this precipice, with no regard for anything but the CAPITAL gains, we stand to LOSE IT ALL! Every natural beauty and resource and imperative, is at stake. WHERE RE ALL THE ENVIRONMENTAL WARRIORS? who cares? About the economic structures we've been destroying ourselves with? How about financing our (REAL AND SUSTAINABLE) futures with NATURE?!!

The metaphor that water is the societal lifeblood is interesting and ironic as water(or any environment categories) is not treated as such.
Over consuming and irresponsible disposing waste into the water stemmed from giving too much importance to productivity without caring any consequences on the environment.
Consumers living the imperial mode of living adds on the already severe environmental condition from big companies. Consumers take for granted on their everyday purchases without knowing how it was transported, who manufactured it or any whatsoever details of the product aside from the cheap price.

Ditch plastic! Use tumblers and other sustainable materials instead then encourage other people to do the same. The individual effort combined can change society. :)

While I am skeptical about ozone depletion, I can certainly see how plastics are a serious environmental issue. The only question I have is how are plastics going to be safely disposed of. There are various proposals, do the research.

Why dont they have water tanks in homes and deliver water to the tanks? It would put end to plastic bottles. Or if we had glass grinders a d could pulverize glass water bottles to powder to be recycled thats another idea. Have call in IDEAS ONLY talk radio station.
You know how many different products in shops come in plastic bottles? Plastic is cheaper, there is no way anyone is going to listen and actually change a thing about it.

What nobody actually realizes, is that after the ice age, that our carbon emissions are currently in the process of bringing about, there will still be massive amounts of monoxide, (and other greenhouse gasses) still in the air, and if were lucky, well end up with a waterworld, if were NOT, lucky, all those greenhouse gasses will evaporate all the water and well (or our future generations) will, be on a desert world, in either event, there will be a period of unlivable (and untenable) barometric pressure, meaning that the atmosphere will be too humid, for our species to exist here, I really hope Elon musk (and any other in the interest of humakind) has this in mind with his neuralink project...
The desert planet only works if the oceans dry out. So unless the water leaves the planed the worst that will happen is that the water will just circulate more.
