As a child, I absolutely loved this movie, this soundtrack and especially the first scene with the Wild Horde. Some 20 years have passed and when I watched it a few days ago, nothing has changed.

I was raised watching these spaghetti westerns!
They don't make them like this any more...
The stories, the scenery, the actors...
I am glad I am as old as I am and was there for the 60s and 70s and true pity today's youth...

This what you call epic. The scene seems to last forever, putting the emphasis on how impenetrable and invincible the horde is. Besides, the passage including the Ride of the Valkyries stresses the majesty and quasi divine nature of this mass, moving like a one man army. The way the scene is filmed, a progression in wide angle then focusing on the frontmen and narrowing the frame, giving the impression that there is an almost infinite number of them. A true masterpiece.
The story takes place in 1899, very important, because it is nearly the end of the age of outlaws. The American government has started to get a firm grip on the continent, having its own State Army (the Civil War has ended 30 years earlier) and the US government is already expending to the shores of Japan to start its commercial expension, Lewis and Clarke have already mapped the whole continent through a massive expedition. It is the end of the century, massive industrialisation and the rise of the administration, bureaucracy. The character played by Henry Fonda is one last of his kind, he is the last of the samurai, the last of the Mohican, like Terence Hill says "the good old days", and Terence Hill wants to offer him a good death, with the Wild Horde. The Wild Horde here symbolises the remains of the wilderness on the American continent as well as in the American mythology.
Terence Hill wants to offer to his old hero to die with his dignity along with the wilderness itself, to die with panache and leave a trace in history, to pass the torch to the next generation (hence the duo old hero/young novice). He was doomed since the very first seconds of the film, as you can hear a clock ticking, foreshadowing the end: there's no time left, all his friends are getting killed one after the others, the old legends have died (scene in the graveyard) either of old age, or losing duels.
This scene always moves me a lot.

I am really admiring Spagetti Westerns. I'm even searching for the lesser known ones from the 1960s too. Ennio Morricone really excelled with his musical scores with the westerns. My Name Is Nobody and The Good The Bad And The Ugly are amongst my favourites with the musical direction.

There are only 120 to 150 horse riders in the scene. But Ennio's music creates an illusion of tens of thousands horse riders in our mind. It is the power of Ennio's music.

I love this song and listen to it along with other Morricone tunes and it is *almost* my selection, that tune is the closing credit to "For a Few Dollars More."
as much as i love the song's opening with the guitar and whistling along with the overall tempo and energy of the piece, only one thing keeps me from saying absolute top tier Morricone.
    Those.
    *GODDAMNED*.
    Horns.
everything else slides into place smooth as butter. the piece is near pitch perfect, but the horns come in and they sound like kazoos. it mocks wagner by being playful and unserious and morricone is just to damned good to let them be a part of the music without having meaning.
i don't know if that was at request of director and producers or morricone really wanted the horns in the song. maybe because at the heart of "my name is nobody" it is a comedy and someone thought that having selection that too serious wouldn't work with the overall aesthetic of the film.
    who knows?
