I wondered abt that. Goldie Hawn went on The Tonight Show (I think) back in the day to promo this movie - which was one of the first she produced or got into.production or something like that, & she was personally invested in it. She had developed the property after going out w/her friends for an evening & that was when she heard what was basically this story from one of her buddies. She said she coukdn't believe it when the girl told her bc she was the LAST person she woukd've ever thought would end up in the Army; so this was basically a real life story that they embellished on. And I was wondering abt the "Thornbirds" thing bc all I could think of was "Wgat, is this supposed to be The Airborne?? SHE was in The Airborne??"
I suspect what Hollywood was reaching for here were "The Green Berets"...
