I honestly think this/carol of the bells is one of the most beautiful songs humanity has ever created. So lovely to hear it in the original language.
The orginal wasn't even about Christmas. It was originally a Ukrainian folk song

Gorgeous! I never knew that my favorite Christmas carol was originally a Ukrainian song! And knowing is half the battle.
And it originally had nothing to do with Christmas, It was a traditional folk chant whose language was thought to have magical properties. So its actually technically a spell. :)
Jasmine Mueller yeah originally it was kind of useless
+Jasmine Mueller I loved the music
+Jasmine Mueller It was sung on Pagan holiday
Its origins is over a millennium in age

Carol of the Bells" (also known as the "Ukrainian Bell Carol") is a choral miniature work originally composed by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. Throughout the composition, Leontovych used a four note motif .as an ostinato which was taken from an ancient pagan Ukrainian New Year's chant known in Ukrainian as "Shchedryk" [the Generous One] KILLED in 1921by the KGB for being a Ukrainian Nationalist. when stranded in the US on tour at that time. He lives on in his music. It'a new years song wishing wellness and prosperity.

I literally had goosebumps watching this. I'm glad I took the time to look up the song's history.
a very interesting story about the path of this song to recognition in Europe and the USA. The composition was presented to the Western public by the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the direction of Oleksandr Koshyts, who toured on behalf of the Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in the countries of Western Europe and North and South America in order to promote the idea of Ukrainian independence (1919-1924). The performance of the Ukrainian choir in Paris, where the Paris Peace Conference was held, was important, at which the Ukrainian delegation wanted to show that Ukraine has the right to independence, that Ukrainians are different from russians. unfortunately, the idea of Ukrainian independence was rejected by the world community, and Ukraine was occupied by communist russia
And Ukraine paid a very heavy price that continues to this day.

Passionate..
Actually it’s original version of the song, its Ukrainian national song
Raccoon Head I think we know that
It's the original. The song was created in 1914 by a Ukrainian composer
"Shchedryk" (Ukrainian: Щедрик, from Щедрий вечiр, "Bountiful Evening") is a Ukrainian shchedrivka, or New Year's song, known in English as "The Little Swallow". It was arranged by composer and teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916, and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring. "Shchedryk" was originally sung on the night of January 13, New Year's Eve in the Julian Calendar (December 31 Old Style), which is Shchedry Vechir. Early performances of the piece were made by students at Kyiv University. "Shchedryk" was later adapted as an English Christmas carol, "Carol of the Bells", by Peter J. Wilhousky following a performance of the original song by Alexander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1921. Wilhousky copyrighted and published his new lyrics (which were not based on the Ukrainian lyrics) in 1936, and the song became popular in the United States and Canada, where it became strongly associated with Christmas. Conceptually, the Ukrainian lyrics of this song meet the definition of a shchedrivka, while the English content of "The Little Swallow" identifies it as a kolyadka or, in other words, a Christmas carol.

Even more so when you learn that the original folk song version tells of a bird flying into a farmhouse to tell the farmer that spring is here, that the harvest will be good and he and his beautiful wife will be prosperous. It is a song of hope, of renewal after the dark days of winter.

2020: If you are still alive and listening to this...Congratulations!!!!!!
I get the biggest goosebumps when I listen to this particular choir version of this song every year before Christmas.
This is a children's Christmas song - a carol, traditionally on Christmas Day children used to go from house to house and sing carols, for which they were supposed to be given candy or money, like in the USA on Halloween. That's why a children's choir to me sounds more aesthetic and better - [ Дитячий хор співає "Щедрик" ].
My class sang this, in both Ukrainian and English, last year for our school’s annual Christmas concert. It’s one of the best songs ever created.
I’m from Ukraine and I can say that it’s amazing. I am very glad that you sang this song. You are great fellows

From the United States, much gratitude for this rendition in all the glory of its original language. I have been coming back to this video every Christmas for years now. It is a great entrance into meditation on the season of Christmas.

This song is older than Christianity. The lyrics are about a swallow that flies into a house and sings a blessing upon the home for the new year.
Thank you, Lithuania

The redhead in the front row of sopranos is amazing. She is going off! Awesome.
This is really nice. The tone of the song makes more sense to me after learning it was originally a Ukrainian New Year song, though. The English version still sounds good but seems out of place when compared with how most other Christmas music sounds.
a that's not just a "new year song", it's a pagan ritual one, new year being met in spring.
@@user-dq7xw4ed3e Thanks for clarifying
@@elvismuesli2070
nothing for, as we say (sorta not at all). also if you look in to the original lirix, that would be obvious: the song is actually about how a swallow (a spring symbol) flyes in (comes back from warmer places) and calls the onwer of the flock of sheep to tell him and congratulate with the fact that lambs were just new born.
@@user-dq7xw4ed3e Yeah, that makes sense too. I didn't really think about it too much while reading the lyrics. Was still just focused on how great it sounds :D

RoxyDzey yea only thing I don't like about America is that there is no culture
I dont think we mind all that much, really. After all, they gave the world quite a bit as well. Not every culture is good at everything, but everyone is good at something, right? i dont really know how to describe it but this songs has a really dark/spooky flavor that i really like. Its almost as if some kids sang this song while playing in a forest at night.. As if there would still be some danger out there in the woods and they are playing peacefully without knowing. I would say you can feel the slavic background to it. I am polish/german and to me it always felt very cold and rough here so i guess this is what i'm feeling in this song
It’s about the beginning of the spring and the end of the winter. So nothing dark about it
