  • ✽ “Shchedryk” (the original “Carol of the Bells”) with lyrics I’ve translated from Ukrainian into English, as well as with original lyrics in Ukrainian.
“Shchedryk” was arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych at the beginning of the 20th century. The song is based on the traditional Ukrainian folk chant welcoming the New Year (“shchedrivka”). In 1921, the Ukrainian National Chorus sung the song in the United States to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall. Later, Peter J. Wilhousky rearranged the melody for orchestra and wrote the new lyrics in English thus creating “Carol of the Bells”. The original “Shchedryk” by Leontovych was intended to be sung a cappella by mixed four-voice choir.

    ♫ Lyrics in English:
    Shchedryk, shchedryk, shchedrivochka
Here flew the swallow from afar
Started to sing lively and loud
Asking the master to come out
Come here, oh come, master - it’s time
In the sheepfold wonders to find
Your lovely sheep have given birth
To little lambs of great worth
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
    You have a wife
    Fair as a dove
If not the coin, then the chaff
You have a wife fair as a dove

Unfortunately, I don't think they (Ukrainians) are getting the credit and recognition truly deserved here. Their own composers and artisans of all kinds are less well-known than they should be, this musical arrangement a prime example. Everyone thinks this a "christmas song" when it has nothing to do with that Middle-eastern religion whatsoever.

Being British, I love all things dark, gothic and slightly morbid, and this song puts a gothic, dark and mysterious mood to Christmas. That's probably why it's so popular here. I love it very much. Most mystical about it, I find, is that it is a pagan song dating from before Christianity in Ukraine, later adapted to become the Bell Carol. I love this fact because it proves how even before the religion, these people were seeing the beauty of the universe and honoring it in what was their New Year celebration, which for Slavic pagans began in the spring, when the shchedryk emerged. ua-cam.com/video/Zujdol3FNcY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=VictorAlexiev this video explains it and just look at these visuals!

A little story about this song: 1918-1919 was a short period in our history when was firstly announced independent Ukraine (UNR: Ukrainian Folk Republic), and Germany was the first country who admit it. In that period our country was divided between some political forces, and one of them - anticommunistic - was headed by Symon Petliura, who sent our choir, consisted mostly of members of Kyiv university choir "Dnipro", to Europe in 1919 to tell other peoples that we are separate nation with our own traditions and culture. But earlier in 1916 that choir firstly performed that song with Leontovych´ music version written in the beginning of XX century (lyric was folk and very ancient). The composer was later killed by russian chekist, but it is another story. In the USA Shchedryk was firstly performed in 1922 with the same choir who emigrated there and never returned to Ukraine because it finished her existence for long decades because of Soviet Union. This song became popular in 17 countries and only in 1936 was covered as "Carol of the bells" by P. Wilhousky, who was an american with Ukrainian roots. Some years ago it was found the vinyl disk with earliest English version of this song, it called "Bluebirds" and close by meaning to the original. It was presented in Kamyanets-Podilsky, where Petliura had his government and where he sent the choir with mission to Europe from. And it was sung again with modern "Dnipro" choir, you can look for the records in UA-cam.

Ukrainian nationalists at that time were Volodymyr Vynnychenko, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi and Simon Petliura, who fought for independence against the Bolsheviks. Poland did not influence Ukrainian culture at that time. Polonization took place after the release of this song. Polonization also took place in the territories of the ZUNR. Therefore, regarding Shchedryk. The RUSSIANS are to blame. They have been destroying Ukrainian culture and Ukrainians since time immemorial, Mykola Leontovych is a vivid example. The problem is that it's not Christmas song originally. We sing this song on the 13th of January when there was pegan New Year before Christianity. Our Ukrainian composer was performing as a conductor in Carnegie Hall in 1921. After that performance our Ukrainian song was interpreted into English. Just discovered the origin of “Carol of the Bells” in a random article, and immediately sought out the source; thrilled to be able to hear the original Ukrainian lyrics mixed so seamlessly with their English translation. Thank you! I’ve only ever known it as a Christmas carol, and while it’s one of my favorites, it always gave me a completely different feeling about the holiday than the other carols. It somehow seemed to emphasize the surreal and mystical elements surrounding the lore of the season, even though the lyrics in both versions make no allusions to them. It’s a fantastic song with a great name. -Edit: Just realized this is you singing (lots of channels post content they find elsewhere) and by golly you’re fantastic! Beautiful voice and stellar arrangement. Cheers!

I first heard of this song as "The Ukrainian Bell Choir", as a child when I didn't even know what "Ukrainian" meant. (At the time Ukraine was a provence of the Soviet Union, and I probably would have found that to be off-putting if I had known it at the time). But I liked the melody, and later recognized it when I heard it introduced as "Carol of the Bells".
More recently, my church's handbell choir had played it to start our annual Christmas concert for a few years, until the concert schedule was disrupted by the pandemic. In 2021, we had a scaled back concert, and didn't play "Carol of the Bells". Two months later, when Russia attacked Ukraine, I suggested that we should now play "Carol of the Bells", even though it was out of season, to show solidarity with Ukraine.

@@rubberduckyconvoy2723 I too cry. Every day. I never had children. But I do have feelings. These tragedies happen every day in Ukraine, and it's unpredictable where. Russia can't win over Ukraine on the battlefield, so instead they fight the civilians, with weapons meant to destroy large military targets. It is pure terror.
Russia want to reconquer everything they once "had" (back then it was also stolen by force), they are potetially at war with almost everything around them. Russia chose their war to be fought in Ukraine now. Ukraine is only defending itself, and is fighting for survival. Survival of all of us. If Russia wins Putin will continue. Ukraine must (and will) win. For the safety of all. But most of all for the Ukrainians, who never deserved such terror being thrown at them.
Putin's regime today is pure evil. Until it falls it will be a threat to everything near Russia. Putin's regime must fall, and it can only happen on the battlefield in Ukraine. Ukraine must win the war so thoroughly that Russia collapses, or completely changes to an all different kind of government.
Here in Scandinavia we've always tried to be very tolerant, towards the Soviets and Russia too. There's no tolerance left towards Russia now, you can't be tolerant to a murderous mafia boss who let people kill or suffer to achieve and keep power.
No matter how much we believe in peace and tolerance, at this point we need our military mind to achieve it. That means supporting Ukraine, as much, as soon and in every way they need it. And there are as many good reasons to support Ukraine as there are decent, civilised people on the planet.
Now I hope we all send the victory load of weapons Ukraine needs to finish the war as soon and thoroughly as possible, to end the terror and suffering. To let children again grow up in a nice warm world of good relations between people. To grow up to become decent, civilised, friendly human beings themselves. The children must be our biggest concern, they are our future.
I, we all, firmly trust that Ukraine will push the Russians all the way back, win the war, liberate all their territories, put an end to all the terror. And begin a new future, with many wounds to heal, but with freedom, security, peace, prosperity - and many new friends.
Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava! Stay safe!

When I stopped celebrating Christmas about 8 years ago, I missed a handful of beautiful songs that are always associated with that holiday. I'm so happy to find out that this song was originally Pagan and had nothing to do with the Western Christmas holiday 💙💛💙💛 Love from Alaska 💙💛💙💛

I think one one of the reasons it sounds almost hauntingly beautiful is the droning harmonies. That isn't something I've seen too often.

As a Malaysian, let me tell you this song is God sent ! A heavenly Ukrainian hymn, simple but so meaningful that the world did not know much of because of communist Josef Stalin and the USSR's oppression of Ukraine culture and music for all those years. Amazing voice from Nina. Slava Ukrainya (Glory to Ukraine) !

Да ещё есть манкурты из украинцев, которые уже и украинцами себя то толком не считают, которые верят украинофоской, кремлёвскоц пропаганде.
Пропаганде что гололомор, геноцид украинцев это просто так, любов Сталина.

@@scythianking7315 Christmas and New Year celebration are different things, despite what religious organizations want to brainwash people into. So something being about New Year does not automatically make it Christmas. New Year celebration this song was originally about did not even happen in winter - it was celebrated in spring. It celebrates new year that comes once winter ends and birds start coming back for spring.
