    THANK YOU! I needed this right now as I started to question how to lengthen a pattern with a lengthen/shorten line. Your short and concise explanation helped me to save time and blundering along 😂😊

    Hi there! What do you do if the pattern is cut on the bias and the grainline is diagonal to the length of the pattern piece? Thanks! Love the Seamwork patterns!

    thank you so much for this video.
    i am trying first time to shorten and lengthen. i am trying with a shirt pattern.
    i dont know if i am doing it right.
    i am shortening the front by one inch at the chest through the armhole.
    and the back i am not sure if i should lengthen at the back chest by 1 inch through the armhole by cutting like said.
    but i am going to test it.
    i am a self-taught
    i need some advice.

      As Haley mentions in the video, find the lengthen/shorten here lines on the pattern, and make your adjustments in that area. In general I would avoid lengthening/shortening through the armhole. If you need additional help you can reach out directly to contact@seamwork.com. Good luck!

    What kind of tape can you use on these pattern pieces so that if you use them again when you iron them out it will not shrink up the pattern?

      We'd recommend pressing from the backside on a low temp and always using a press cloth.

    Hi there. I have a pattern with no lengthen/shorten lines at all and I would like to lengthen the pattern. Its a harem pants pattern. Where would I draw the lengthen line please. Still new to sewing.

      Are you wanting to shorten the legs? The rise? You can add or reduce length anywhere, just draw a line perpendicular to the grainline and make sure it doesn't intersect with any vital markings like darts or notches. If you need to add or reduce by a lot, you can make multiple lines along pattern pieces too.

    can you use this method on a jeans pattern?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 років тому

      Definitely! For pants, you want to lengthen or shorten in the area that you need it, so pay attention to the shape of the pants and where it falls on your knee, etc.

  • @homewithsanya

    Do you shorten the other pieces at the same area as you did the first pattern piece?

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 років тому +1

      It depends on the pieces and where you need the length the most, but for front and back pieces, yes, that's usually a good idea. You can really shorten anywhere on a pattern that doesn't interrupt any major design features, like darts, as long as you make sure to blend your side seams and that all the pieces you altered line up before you sew.

      Seamwork thank you so much for responding. I adjusted the back pattern for the back to waist which is too long for me. But the front to waist is the perfect length. I was hoping to shorten another area on the front to remove the inches I took from the back on the front pattern to ensure it all lines up. Hence my question, can it be shorten elsewhere on the front pattern.

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 років тому

      @@homewithsanya Definitely. Sometimes you might need more length in a different area on the front vs. the back. We're all shaped differently and this is one of the best parts about sewing! If you already made a muslin, you can pinch out the areas on the front and back where you need to shorten, which will help you determine where to shorten on your pattern pieces.

    But what do you do if your skirt pattern isn’t on a fold and flares out as it goes down? The top pattern piece, with a 2inch lengthen space between, sticks out further than the bottom half. So how do I get the sides to line up? A simple blend isn’t going to work as the top half is approximately 1/2 further out each side. Help?! 🤞

      It's hard to give you a detailed answer without seeing pictures. If you are a Seamwork member post in the community with pictures. Which pattern are you making?

    I would suggest that you use paper scissors when cutting the pattern pieces NOT your fabric scissors. Cutting paper with your fabric scissors will dull them.

    • @SeamworkVideo

      Don't worry, Haley is using paper scissors in this video!

    Great video but...It seems to me that this is not so easy. Bodice. A person of 168cm and a person of 178 cm do not have the same proportions, armhole, neckline ...

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  5 років тому +2

      This is just one of many common adjustments you can use when starting a new project, but maybe we can do some videos on those other adjustments you mentioned!

    The problem is, all the examples for shortening are straight NO FLAIR at the bottom

    • @SeamworkVideo
      @SeamworkVideo  Рік тому

      HI Judi, for a flared pant, you'll follow the same method, but just make sure to make the adjustment above the flare.
