    When I worked as a consultant at 55 Water Street my desk was next to a window overlooking the heliport. It was fun watching them landing and taking off. My favorite was when President Clinton would fly in and his motorcade would line up on the FDR drive. I still have a picture I took in 1998 showing his helicopter and the motorcade.

    • @iTzDritte
      @iTzDritte 2 місяці тому +6

      I always found the helicopters to be annoying and bothersome. It’s cool on the rare occasion when the president arrives to address the UN, but 99.9999% of the time it’s just tourists.

    • @doubledrats235
      @doubledrats235 2 місяці тому +7

      @@iTzDritte I couldn’t hear the helicopters from my office. I just saw them if I looked out the window at Brooklyn. I could have closed the blinds or looked elsewhere if it bothered me. Or did some work I was getting paid for.
      In the early 1980s I used to visit a warehouse sometimes that was next to Island Helicopters in Garden City, NY. That was annoyingly loud. We joked about having a kite flying contest in the parking lot which was right next to the heliport. They shut down years ago and they built a hotel (now Hampton Inn Garden City, NY) where they took off from.

    • @sinfulldoubt
      @sinfulldoubt  2 місяці тому +6

      That would be cool. I did see Biden leaving Wall Street one night but usually when the president was flying I had to take the heli elsewhere so I didn't get to see anything

      That must have been awesome! I worked at EWR as an airfield electrician when President Clinton was in office. He was in town one day for a UN meeting. We were tasked with setting up portable lights around the C-141 which flew in his motorcade (about 5 or 6 vehicles packed into that bird). Air Force One was parked on the other side of the airport. After setting up the lights around the C-141, just before dusk, my co-worker and I met the flight crew and started talking. I was telling them how much I loved aviation and always wanted to become a pilot. They invited us to the flight deck and I asked the Captain if it was ok for me to snap some pictures of the cockpit (I'd already took pictures outside). He said sure. Then he told me to sit in his seat as he reached for my camera to take a picture of me. Then they said....ok now from the co-pilot's seat! Man I was in heaven as a young 20 yr old kid...LOL.
      A little over a decade later (at 32) I started flight lessons at Teterboro Airport and got my PPL just prior to my 33rd birthday. 😊
      Met a lot of great military and civilian pilots and saw a ton of awesome aircraft at EWR and LGA back then! Also saw President Reagan at EWR when I was around 17yrs old.

    Interesting seeing how things are done back there. Out here in L.A. it's all about the freeways. The recommended routes are pretty much 90% following the those. Still don't see too many Bell, but it's been slowly increasing. LAFD just got one. Aspen company uses 407s to do target collection for the Navy near me out on the ocean range.

    Im old enough to remember when the Pam Am Building on Park Ave in NYC had their heliport ontop of their roof. They would shuttle, via their own fleet of Pan Am helicopters their passengers from NYC to JFK PanAm terminals. Silver cutlery and fine china plates.

      All the dozens of flights I've been on as a wildland firefighter and calling in around 100 bucket drops has brought me into researching ultralight helis. Under 254lbs with floats and a 5 gallon gas tank with an engine that doesn't go above 55 knots (63mph). Evidently that doesn't require a pilots license. Same with paramotors. I'll do some training first before I ever actually purchase some form of flight machine that doesn't require a license 🦺🙏

      Oh it's been an awesome adventure that's taken me all over the world. If you're open to just moving wherever and doing whatever to get hours it's pretty easy to find a job. That being said, it was still a bumpy road to getting these hours. Covid really halted things. I started doing cherry drying, worked an AG company for a bit but that wasn't my cup of tea. So I went to the tuna boats for a while. Then came to NYC for a while. Left for a company doing power line work but got laid off last year. So I came back to NYC for a few months until I was able to come back to the power line gig last month

    Wow nice to see the Caldwell airport, this is where i Got my certificate on a Robinson 22 in 1992. Instructor was Jeff Morrow. Examiner was Chavez. I liked going on Sunday morning, no traffic. Went around the Statue and took some pictures of the Intrepid. There was no GPS or iPads. Paper map's only! Thank you Blade. God bless.

    Flying over even short distances of water like that is foolish without over-water gear on and installed floats. Maybe that helicopter had the expandable floats on, but I couldn’t tell, nor could I see the actuator switch on the cyclic.

    I rarely leave a comment BUT watching you do these NYC flights is just fuckin' AMAZIN'!! I got to imagine the stress level has to be fairly HIGH doing these roots what 10 times a day?!? And it's amazing to watch how much you have to do to fly safely in probably one of the highest traffic levels in the world!! As far as I could tell there were only a minute here or there in the videos where you could relax and weren't constantly getting advisories and adjusting your route as well as being aware of all the instrumentation that's required. Again this has to be a fairly stressful job transporting passengers back and forth from the city to the airports. I doubt there is any pilot who has done this for more than a few years if even that!! I have no clue as to what they pay you but if you're not making $250k then you are not being recognized for your talent and skill!!
    I see from your number of videos that it has not been a consistent process for you here on UA-cam. The reason I am leaving these comments is because I found it absolutely fascinating and since this was the first time I've ever watched any helicopter videos my heart rate raised significantly because I know how much air traffic is in this area. I absolutely love to fly but I don't know if my sense of anxiety would allow me to be in a helicopter on your route.
    As others have commented have stated I think how you present the video is outstanding!! I appreciate as well the subtitles because it gives me a lot of information about what it is you're actually doing which allows me to appreciate and understand more of the process. The only criticism I have is the noise level from the engine and blades are a bit unnecessary but it's part of the job and I can always mute the sound and still know what's going on because of the subtitles.
