  • My first console as a kid was the SNES, and even after diving deep into NES games as an adult I still somehow always passed this game up. So it's finally time to play The Legend of Zelda on NES!

Always a good time playing it. Got my girl to play and she really enjoyed it and beat it with no help. No cheats nothing, just good ole fashioned gaming. She'd never played it, I was impressed. She grew up with the SNES being her first console, she's a 90's baby.

It's always fun to watch someone play classic games for the first time. It's almost like exploring the game, and falling in love with it, all over again.

Watching walkthroughs and speed runs can be interesting, but witnessing someone be challenged by it as a real person is reassuring that I'm not too bad at games. Games were made for fun after all.

Oh yeah baby! My number 1 favorite Nintendo classic Zelda video game. I have this on my pre programmed Nintendo mini console I got earlier this year off eBay and I love it. My sister says she wants to try playing it herself sometime too. Thank you for finally uploading this video Erin. I’ve played this game so many times as a little kid but never won the first quest but once I watched lots of tutorial videos on UA-cam and found the over world map online I was able to beat the first quest. Now I just need to figure out more of the similar tutorials and such in order to beat the second quest. I know if I was there with you I would certainly be able to help you out with all the info and walkthroughs on how to play this classic Nintendo game and ultimately beat the first quest. You just have to know in each quest when and how to upgrade your sword plus your clothes and how to use bombs and especially the blue candle to grab more and more extra heart containers and tons of extra rubies in order to buy more items plus a note from the old man to buy red & blue medicines to refill your health in shops. Plus many of the additional items you get in the dungeons work to your advantage as well. Some shops you visit are also more cheaper than other shops in the over world. Plus of course you can’t ever play the final dungeon level 9 or death mountain until you’ve collected all 8 pieces of the tri-force of wisdom in all the other dungeons 1-8 and work your way thru it to face off against Gannon and save princess Zelda and win the game. Keep up the good video game work and write back to me soon Erin.

Yup you’re exactly right Erin and many thanks for your reply back today. My name is Jason (last name Winter by the way) from Saint Louis Missouri. Of course the NES legend of Zelda game itself really doesn’t end or finish until you manage to somehow beat the second quest although I discovered if you choose to name your character Zelda when you register your name then you won’t play the first quest at all, it’ll take you right to the second quest. There’s so much more to talk about here but I’m sure you’ll get to lots more of it in a part 2 video of the legend of Zelda sometime and I’ll be looking forward to watching it on your UA-cam channel here.

Lots of information on enemies in this video, Erin. Some of them I knew before, but had never seen the drawings so closely. That was a nice touch from you.
In various parts of the video I felt that this was not the first time you played The Legend of Zelda, or maybe you are very good at it☺️, because you could go so far, buy the expensive blue ring, find the second sword and most of all you were able to find so many secret stairs under the bushes that it took me months to find them😅🤣

I started collecting for the NES when I was in about 7th grade and there were a ton of nes games in the thrift stores for a couple bucks a piece. That’s when I found Zelda. Played through it with my best friend and drew our own map of the overworld. The internet wasn’t what it is now, so we discovered everything for ourselves. Every burnable bush, every bombable wall. So much fun. It’s still one of my favorite games today.

  • @fusionspace175

It's so fun watching you discover this game for the first time. When I got my NES, my mom and dad said that I could only get a new game once I had beaten the last game, so I just played Mario and Duck Hunt plus rentals until I beat them, and my first game I knew I wanted to get was Legend of Zelda, because I had seen it and played a bit at a friend's house. Beating Mario was made a lot easier once you learned the infinite 1-up trick of bouncing on a koopa shell on the stairs. As big a jump as Mario was from Atari games, Zelda was that big a jump from Mario, in terms of my idea of what a game could be. The size of the world and the variety of enemies and items was astounding at the time.
We didn't have guides unless Nintendo Power decided to feature a game, but other kids who played the game were essential sources of information. I'd go to school with a question and, like in an rpg, ask everyone about it until I got an answer. A huge part of my childhood was this NES underground, it was something we all had in common. Very few kids had any other system at that time, and other kids collections was where I found out about Contra and Castlevania, and tons of games I knew I didn't want as well. It really helped with selecting the few you'd get to own, because they were big purchases. 30 bucks doesn't sound like a lot until you realize action figures were usually only 4 or 5 bucks, for comparison. Zelda was one of the best value for money games, even before you find out there's a whole second quest. I think it holds up really well even now, because it was just that well designed.

Summer after sixth grade I poured myself into the Second Quest. I created my very own hyper detailed strategy guide with hand drawn maps of the overworld and every dungeon detailing every secret, every item, every hidden path ("bombable" and hidden walls) every burnable bush...EVERYTHING! It was seven pages long and would have to this day been displayed in my fancy china cabinet as a testament to my childhood and one of my greatest summers ever...if my mom had understood what it was and didn't throw it out!
Still working on forgiving her for that!

When I was a kid a friend of mine got this and it blew my mind. It's funny looking back on it now but since I was so used to Atari one screen games or not very long (in terms of the actual length of the levels) side scrollers to me as a kid felt like it was as huge and virtually endless as Zelda Breath of the Wild is today. I didn't know games could be this big with so much stuff to do in them until this was released.

If you don't count the pack-in Mario/Duck Hunt, this was my first NES game, and I was OBSESSED with it back in the day, though it hasn't aged all that well. Better than I'd remembered before my most recent replay, though; it doesn't get REALLY awkward, cryptic, and frustrating until the second quest. But hey, you conquered Level 5 with the White Sword; that might be the hardest dungeon in the entire first quest, though Levels 8 and 9 put up a decent fight.
Protip: I must've played this about a million times before I found out how the whistle works. It always takes you to a dungeon, but it isn't completely random; facing west will take you down a number, and facing right will take you up a number.

When Erin used the heart potion, at 37:50, it sounds like the level end time/coin counting sound effect from Super Mario Land on Gameboy.

It also reminds me of the sound from Hogan's Alley when a new set of targets in the shooting range game came up.

0:30 If you can only shoot the sword when your energy is full, it means the power to shoot it comes from Link, not from the sword itself. That’s why it doesn’t matter it being a simple sword made out of wood.

Also hahahahahaha remember trying to find all hearts containers, I cartographed A LOT of the game to have a graphical registry of what places and squares I bombed, burned, moved, etc. I don't remember if I found them all but found many.

One of my favorite games of all time! Definitely one of the best classics! It never gets old. I can pick up and play it right now! Lol
Like the Daria shirt.. somehow fits you (personality). I like your thoughts.. Leevers.. never thought of it that way cuz they do leave for a moment :) You're too funny.. yeah those grabby hands you can stand at the wall and freeze them all with the boomerang till no more appear then kill them all with your sword.. you'll have full life & alot of rupies by the end! I think those "It's a secret to everybody" guys are evenly matched on the ones that want money for their door repair when you start seeing those. Some bushes aren't so good to burn ;p Yeah it's good to know the game. I would've got the arrows for 80 is a good price then takes 1 rupie to shoot 1 arrow. 90 is the cheapest for shield I believe but have to burn a bush near game beginning.. near Level 1 except going left to a corner near the water instead of up to Level 1. Yes blue ring definitely good idea & only place to get it.. halves your damage & turns you white :)
