This song was a breathe of fresh air when it was released in ‘89. The mid ‘80’s weren’t kind to Paul. A lot of people thought Paul may have lost his touch. This song and the album Flowers in the Dirt showed that Paul still had his magic.

It's an awesome album...Elvis Costello gave it the impetus it needed. And I saw Paul and the band live in 1990. Best damn concert I ever saw, I will never forget that night. MAGICAL doesn't begin to describe it. BTW Paul is still looking for that Hofner bass!

Saw McCartney in Frankfurt, Germany 1989 (stationed in Darmstadt with the Army). It was right after he released this album and it was the greatest show I ever saw. This song means so much to me because it came out right after a nightmarish marriage that ended in divorce. She made me feel like I would never be happy again, and didn't deserve to be. This song helped me to realize that I had to be brave and continue to live my life.

That's a very good point. Dylan, Van Morrison, Springsteen, and Neil Young are all great, but they do have a ton of songs that are very similar. Well he looks great for his age no question, and he sure wouldn't if he kept smoking, boozing, or doping too much. Paul always seemed like such a regular guy too with his genius. Where as,Genius's Dylan and Lennon seemed to convey angst and surliness at times. Like if you met Paul he always seemed like he would be solid and pleasant, with the latter 2 it would depend on their mood.

He talked about it being a really Beatles kind of melody and style, especially that line "take me to that place", he said he could imagine him and John singing that line. And he used the Hofner bass. I think it's self aware about how Beatles of a song it is which is probably why the music video here has so much of the Beatles involved

    • @defaultc00kies63
      @defaultc00kies63 3 роки тому +12

I believe it's fully intentional. The song seems to be about John. The timing, the Beatle sound, the references in the video and those lines about being "alone again" and not finding his brave face fit perfectly. John and Paul had the habit of dropping those little hints when they were writing about/to each other. And Elvis Costello was the closest thing to a John personality among his solo collaborators. I think Paul wanted to tell us something without saying it in so many words.

And nobody ever called him James. When Paul was a boy, he asked his parents why everybody calls him Paul, and they said that if a letter came they would be able to tell whether it was for him or his father, who was also named James McCartney. However, he then realized that his brother, Peter Michael McCartney, was called Michael by his parents and everyone else even though there was no Peter in the family. He then decided that it was probably an Irish thing to go by one's second name. @@jennifersimmons8263

My brave, my brave, my brave face
    I've been living in style,
    Unaccustomed as I am
    To the luxury life,
    I've been hitting the town
    And it didn't hit back
    I've been doing the rounds
    Unaccustomed as I am
To the time on my hands,
Now I don't have to tell anybody
When I'm going to get back
    Ever since you went away
    I've had this sentimental inclination
Not to change a single thing
As I pull the sheet back on the bed,
I want to go bury my head
    In your pillow
    Now that I'm alone again
I can't stop breaking down again
The simplest things set me off again
And take me to that place
Where I can't find my brave face,
Where I can't find my brave face,
My brave, my brave, my brave face
    My brave face
    I've been living a lie
    Unaccustomed as I am
To the work of a housewife,
    I've been breaking up
Dirty dishes & throwing them away
Ever since you left I have been trying too
Compose a baby will you please come home note
    Meant for you
    As I clear away another
    Untouched TV dinner
From the table, I laid for 2
    Now that I'm alone again
I can't stop breaking down again
The simplest things set me off again
And take me too that place
Where I can't find my brace face,
Where I can't find my brave face,
