What a fantastic drummer, and the recording is stunning. Drumeo always has the best sounding videos. Thank you for sharing such beautiful sounding lessons.
Pétur Östlund, the Icelandic/American he talks about, has written a book called Circles Within Circles. That, along with Gary Chaffee's entire repertoire, is one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of opening. Great performance, and the information is super-useful!
My old teacher :) The best teacher I´ve ever had. Gulli is one of the greatest drummer but he is even better as a drum teacher and a great person as well.
Never knew Gulli Briem before this lesson but I have so many positive things to say after watching. First off, BEAUTIFUL kit! His calmness and confidence together are truly admirable. I liked the topic of meditation and keeping your cool behind the kit to feel in control. He has great technique and melodic phrasing. I love the Paiste cymbals
Finally Mr. Gulli from Mezzoforte. Great band. been listening to their tracks for 3 years. i've been wondering when will you be on drumeo. I'm so excited. Great to see you not only in your drumming but also giving lessons. the way you emphasize musicality in this lesson is also what i can sense and hear in your live in Reykjavik.(see that live:) )btw thank you.
Practice this!! I love that Breim is actually talking about it. It seems so obvious to try and align your movement with the flow of the music, and it reaaally worked wonders for me (along with finally learning how to count). Just knowing about the concept already brought the first improvements along!
A drummer whom I greatly admire! So much gentle, comfort, depth and dynamic in his playing. Check out his work at MezzoForte! A enduring masterclass in fusion-drumming!
Gee how Gulli is a good teacher. And he talked and told us so many aspects of doing it right, all the way from Breathing (staying relaxed) and all the way until I didn't quite understand. But that's just a bonus, so I can practice what he was showing. Also I noted when he was talking about focusing on each side of the kit, and how he showed it in the last song he did. I was relaxed, focused on what he was doing and enjoyed it :) And then about his gear in this Drumeo video are the best in my option, and I really don't regret buying me these Paste Hi-Hats yesterday
This lesson may seem like an abstraction (or something only for complete beginners) on first viewing but try it for an hour and, well, for me, this 'full stroke syncronisation' concept is the single most important thing I've learned since I started to play. ...I'm only puzzled as to why this took me so long to stumble across (it was actually the Daniel Glass lesson that I got it from) when it seems so integral to holding solid time - once you get settled into this way of playing you completely side-step all that cerebral work of trying to hit the beat precisely... You lift your limbs together and they fall in time like clockwork... And suddenly playing feels so solid and comfortable - timekeeping moves out of the head and into the body. It'll come as a revelation if, like me, you've been struggling to hold time without a click.
Thanks man, I find that when we are able to break down & concentrate on the movement and strokes (flow) its going to improve our playing and musicality, plus timing. Good luck with your playing and practising.
This guy is one of very few drummers that realizes that cymbals need to be played softly to blend in with the full drum sound. Cymbals are played way out of dynamic with the rest of the kit way too often IMO.
You're spot on with his cymbal touch, but his dynamics in general are stellar! His grooves and fills flow with the rest of the song so seamlessly, and his overall relaxed style adds to how great everything sounds.
Thanks for the nice comments. its all important, playing, movement, touch, tuning, sound, mics, preamps and mixing, but generally speaking, drums and cymbals sound better when played at moderate intensity and or soft + i find it more musical in many cases. The thing is too i found that our playing improves in general when we play a little bit looser or less intense. Fun to experiment with and try out,,,,record yourself etch...
Thanks,,,Yes :) Inspired by Gadd, Manu Katche, Chaffee.... its a melodic approach with the concept being like arranged parts inside the music, as well as timekeeping and flow,,,, but NOT just time keeping, although thats cool too:)
I've never liked SO MUCH a drummer's playing like I do with his playing. And the sound of those Yamaha and Paiste (are those the Formula 602?) sets are out of this planet.
Geat lesson! Hey Drumeo crew, do you think you can do a lesson on how to get the most out of an SPD-S? Or maybe electronic drum sets and how can we expand our acoustic sets with electronics. I have an SPD-S i bought on 2005 and I have just used it once live. I play more jazz now, but maybe I can incorporate some trumpets on tunes like Neil Peart or a flute, but I have minimum knwledge on programing my device. What do think? :)
Holy Crap!! It looks like David Bowie can play the drums!! HAHA!! In all seriousness though, man this guy can play! It all looks and sound so smooth and fluid!!!
get Gary Chaffee on drumeo to break down his phrasing and motion concept...his system is a lifetime study...Steve Smith and Vinnie Coliuta are disciples of Gary
The wife of one of my friends is best friends with Chaffee's daughter. My friend wasn't aware of Chaffee's legendary status in the drum world, and when I told him, he said, "I could help get you a lesson with him." Then my jaw hit the floor.
drumeo plz answer this question, recently i bought a set of Evans drum skins, when i got them both the head and bottom head had the same white coating even on the snare, does that make a difference? or should the bottom head be uncoated?
This depends on the sound you want. Generally you want a thinner head for your resonate unless you are experimenting with new Sounds. A thicker/coated resonate head will produce a deader sound. I personally love the Clear G1 as resonate and coated G2 for batter. That is a safe choice for multiple music genres. Hope this helps! :)
Sentite che classe . Delicato ,mai brutale ,eppure preciso ed efficace . Perfetto. E mai noioso. Mai. Io dico che sulla scena del panorama mondiale è il più interessante. 🤟🏻🤟🏻...mia opinione personale.
Drumeo, the kit sounds fantastic (of course, the drummer is also superb). Do you have any material on how you record the kit (mic placement, mic brand, etc)?
I've gotta say, I think there were too many camera angles in that opening song. It was a bit disorienting having quick switches between 6 different angles, I just don't think it's necessary. Two or three angles is enough so we can see what is going on without it being all over the place.
With all the respect I almost fell asleep! What laid back bloke a beautiful drummer bloody amazing cheers mate. Are you related to My Man Mr David Bowie at all? 🧐
Moltissimi drummer potrebbero solo lavargli i piatti a Gulli. Suono perfetto e gusto. Per me, il migliore. 🏅🌟🤟🪐💯Gli altri? Bravi,ma? 🥱🥱
What a fantastic drummer, and the recording is stunning. Drumeo always has the best sounding videos. Thank you for sharing such beautiful sounding lessons.

Thank you so much! Unfortunately Can't find anything about it on google..
That snare and kit and cymbal selection was spot on
Of all the lessons I've watched thus far, this one has benefited me the most. Such a great lesson.
My old teacher :) The best teacher I´ve ever had. Gulli is one of the greatest drummer but he is even better as a drum teacher and a great person as well.
Got to level be and appreciate Dave's reactions and facial expressions! There is a man who really loves drums. We love ya Dave.
How he uses the ride and crash is so different to other's I've listened to! fantastic drummer!
This drummer is really have great fill in sound and techinque while playing
Thanks Titus :)
oh man! a big round of applause to the music engineers! it always sounds great!
Never knew Gulli Briem before this lesson but I have so many positive things to say after watching. First off, BEAUTIFUL kit! His calmness and confidence together are truly admirable. Love the sound of the drums in this video!

Awesome lesson! I love being surprised in a very positive way by a drummer I haven't known yet! Really loved his tracks and his drumming.
I'm seriously hypnotized by their song Cobra from Mezzoforte. It's super cool and fresh though it has its years by now.
Amazing drummer.
Holy crap why have I never heard this guy?! Uggg I suck, amazing lesson!
Thanks Danny, we are all in this together :)
Amazing drummer is Guilli. Respect!
Thank you guys for the lesson.

In full agreement. Great player!
Yeap! I've yet to see such accurate hand/stick movement. It's quite amazing to just watch this guy play.

One of the best tips handed to me was play the cymbals softer than the drums. Works really well in the studio.
Awesome M. Briem, thank you.
Thanks buddy
The sheet music on here has just opened my mind like crazy
Absolutely amazing! What a cool and creative intro.
wow, this man has a nice touch and is totally in control.... and there is some 50 ways remembering too..
Thanks,,,Yes :) Inspired by Gadd, Manu Katche, Chaffee.... its a melodic approach with the concept being like arranged parts inside the music, as well as timekeeping and flow,,,, but NOT just time keeping, although thats cool too:)
Actually , you are evolving! What I really used to dislike is that the camcorders don't make the videos proper . This one issue some .
Sweet doubles on the hands!
These Yamaha Drums.... Oh My God!
Those seven thumb downs need a serious head slap! Awesome drumming! I'll be looking for that groove click AP.
Did you find the app? I can't find it here in US
That aluminium snare sounds so fantastic with better heads, gels. But so expensive.
This guy is pure inspiration
Ugh, that Yamaha Recording Custom is pure butter...
hahaha :D
Good lesson, thanks Drumeo!!!!😆
Thanks Gulli.... saludos from Guatemala City
The ocean is an amazing tune!
Thanks :)
nice drum kit
I've never liked SO MUCH a drummer's playing like I do with his playing. And the sound of those Yamaha and Paiste (are those the Formula 602?) sets are out of this planet.
Thanks Jorge,,,the drums and cymbals are amazing for sure :) The team at Drumeo is also very professional in their work all the way.
For sure! I hope I get to see one of your shows someday. That'd be great.
Greetings from Argentina!
The beginning of the lesson, thinking about the mechanics of movement, reminds me of Daniel Glass' lesson.
Geat lesson! Hey Drumeo crew, do you think you can do a lesson on how to get the most out of an SPD-S? Or maybe electronic drum sets and how can we expand our acoustic sets with electronics. 602 Modern Essentials?
Very cool. Important fundamentals here. The Ocean groove reminds me of 50 ways. Good stuff once again. Thanks Drumeo and Gulli for this;)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
That is an outstandingly wonderful musician!
Holy Crap!! It looks like David Bowie can play the drums!! HAHA!! In all seriousness though, man this guy can play! It all looks and sound so smooth and fluid!!!
Superb!
Mr. Briem is a kicking machine!!!
This first song is very cool !
get Gary Chaffee on drumeo to break down his phrasing and motion concept...his system is a lifetime study...Steve Smith and Vinnie Coliuta are disciples of Gary
We would love to. Please be patient and we will work on it.
The wife of one of my friends is best friends with Chaffee's daughter. My friend wasn't aware of Chaffee's legendary status in the drum world, and when I told him, he said, "I could help get you a lesson with him." Then my jaw hit the floor.
All about who ya know eh? Not a lot more important in life than making friends.

You had it!
drumeo plz answer this question, recently i bought a set of Evans drum skins, when i got them both the head and bottom head had the same white coating even on the snare, does that make a difference? or should the bottom head be uncoated?

Great musician , and compositor. I would like to sing with you one day.
Thanks, That could be fun :)

Great camera work! It was very helpful and matched what was going on. If anything, more angles would be appreciated.
I don't understand... Do you like the camera angles or not? Haha
That's a different Patrick it appears
Whats the name of the guy Gulli was inspired of, when he was playing motion stoff?
