  • In this video I review Nikon D3500 dSLR camera and its 18-55 mm kit lens. I show the camera and talk about its pros and cons and if it’s a good option to consider for your next camera. I introduce the main functions of Nikon D3500 and give you my summary of the camera. You will also see sample photos and sample video of Nikon D3500. My conclusion is that Nikon D3500 is a very good option to consider if you are serious about photography but it may not be the best option for video these days. Overall Nikon D3500 is a smart camera to buy that offers great photo quality.
TECHNICAL: All shown Nikon D3500 sample videos were shot using the Vivid film simulation, no post-processing was done. Most sample photos were derived from raw files, the rest were shot with the Vivid film simulation and Active D-lighting (and white balance was often corrected).

I love this camera as a companion to my D6. Its photo quality is excellent and the versatility is incredible and honestly the 3d tracking is better than you would be led to believe by the paper specs. I love rangefinder style focusing gauge in manual mode. Truly a sleeper of a camera that can do everything you can imagine except extreme sports or harsh weather. Pair this with the 70-200 f4 and the balance is incredible.

Hi Oddie! Thank you for asking. Actually Nikon is discontinuing all of its dSLR cameras (as is Canon and most others). The D3500 was the last one for Nikon in this line. The future is all about hybrid cameras. This makes it a great time to buy a nice dSLR while you still can. You'll have many great lenses to choose from. Kind regards!

Hi Jan! Focus on this camera is what I especially like. It's actually one of the strong points of the D3500. Given the simple nature of this camera and the small number of focus points it's nicely fast and accurate when focusing. I see it work really well with several lenses, including my 50 mm f/1.8 prime. So, I'm not complaining. Cheers!

    • @tom_photo

Hi lorena! Thank you for asking. These cameras are both nice. The Canon has a fully articulated screen and its video goes to 4K. It also shoots faster bursts and has built in wireless. It has a webcam function and also a microphone port and digital video stabilization. So Canon doesn't look bad at all because Nikon is lacking all of those things. Prefer Canon if you want to use it as a video camera. But where does Nikon come in? Nikon is lighter, has a more powerful flash and about 5 TIMES BETTER battery life. Its sensor is a tiny bit larger (meaning larger pixel area and a bit cleaner pictures). But most importantly Nikon does not have anti-aliasing filter in front of the sensor meaning that it produces crisper and sharper photos. In summary, most people would take the Canon because of the video. I'd take the Nikon if I used it only for photography and not video. Hope that helps. Kind regards!

The D3500 goes for 350 USD or something second hand but for the same money you could get a D7100 or even a D7200. And if you want to go fullframe even the legenday D700 is an option. Yes I know older tech etc.. but a D700 is still used by pro's for weddings, portraits. And this machine has a pro build. I rather stay away from entry level camera's. Hi Audiman! Thank you for sharing your opinion. This is certainly one way think about it and a good way, too. On the other hand if the sensor in an entry level camera is the same as in a higher-up camera but the size is smaller and price is much less, entry level cameras are a good option. I've bought my D3500 for 200 EUR and D3400 for 150 EUR - both minimally used. For this price there is a lot of camera there. Kind regards!

@@tom_photothey’re asking who else checked out your video because of “SCP”(Google it to find out more, I have no idea how to explain it), apparently your video has some relation to that series.

@@tom_photoSCP-7122 is the NIKON D3500, SCP (Special Containment Procedure) is a fictional secret organization. It ranges from strange creatures to everyday objects, one of the SCP articles was even an old telephone found in a field wierdly hooked up to a telephone line etc. It is just fictional writings for fun.
