Did you tie the first double over hand directly to the top and bottom or the sides of the peep?

Is the finishing knot just the last half hitch and then burning the tag end?

That is correct. That burnt tag end holds the last half hitch. 👍

Instructions can be better. Should have used 2 different color strings so we can see what you're doing.
